It's a myth that there is no private firearm ownership in Japan. It's very regulated, and most privately owned guns are rifles or shotguns. Very few handguns are in the hands of Japanese citizens, and usually those cannot be kept in the home of the owner. As of 1995, there were around thirty (yes, I said thirty) handguns in a population of over 120 million. (these are the legally owned/registered handguns, no doubt there are more that are illegally obtained) For more information look at:

I also don't believe that the low crime rate in Japan has anything to do with the difficulty in obtaining firearms. I think it has more to do with a sense of national pride as well as cultural "sameness" (for lack of a better word).

Japanese gun control and other losses...

Yet few Americans are aware of the horrible loss in personal freedoms the Japanese people have paid for their low crime rate. It is not just the right to own guns the Japanese people have surrendered to their government; they have also given up the right of self-determination, the right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures, and the right to privacy. In Japan these freedoms are routinely violated.

Yoroshiku Bryan-san,

Pop Quiz!

Which item(s) on your list of crimes that Aum got away with between 1989 and 1995, has AQ or it's non-aligned alignment (to include Venezuela) allies not gotten away with as well?

Bonus Question: Which of the crimes have they actually committed on U.S. soil?
