Audio: Pakistani journalist Hamid Mir on AQ’s alleged nuclear plot

Live on the phone from Islamabad. What a coup for Glenn Beck; I haven’t seen this story covered anywhere in the mainstream media aside from the two recent posts at the Blotter about Adnan al-Shukrijumah. Excellent, excellent job by Beck and his staff.

If you haven’t followed the unfolding Al Qaeda WMD storyline, start with this post from May and these two from the past week. The audio picks up with Mir talking about his recent meeting in Afghanistan with AQ capo Abu Dawood. It ends with him alleging a closer relationship between Al Qaeda and Iran than most counterterror experts believe.

I could only get away with a six-minute clip. For a summary of the whole interview, read Vinnie’s post at My Pet Jawa.

Stay on it Allah,

I have not seen this in the mainstream media either but Hamid Mir did appear on a latenight radio show as a guest Monday, September 18th. He was interviewed by George Noory on Coast to Coast AM.

Too bad he was followed by a self-proclaimed psychic vampire. Kind of spoils the mood and taints the message.

Keep an eye on this one.

I have not seen this in the mainstream media either, but I did hear an interview with Hamid Mir on Coast to Coast AM. It aired Monday, September 18th.

Sadly it was followed by an interview with a self-proclaimed psychic vampire. Made it kind of hard to put it in context with real world events.

That’s funny, Beck had George Nouri on right after Mir.

Mir certainly seems to be plugged in. I only wonder how reliable Dawood is. While Mir is right that spin isn’t a big part of the jihadi media mindset, we have heard an awful lot of nasty promises that have not been fulfilled. More like wishful thinking, perhaps?

But this does seem entirely plausible, doesn’t it?

RE: Glenn Beck

Just because you’re an alarmist doesn’t mean they aren’t out to nuke us… I guess.

frankj on September 21, 2006 at 6:44 AM

FrankJ…I think they’re going to nuke the moon and take credit for the idea.

Bellicose Muse on September 21, 2006 at 7:04 AM

Listen to Glenn here. Streaming M-F 9-Noon eastern. Today’s show will be good!

When do you sleep AP!

MT on September 21, 2006 at 8:29 AM

I listened the radio yesterday, and I am not sure…about all this. I am not saying that Glenn is staging this, but it looked so phony. I won’t be surprised if G.B. was taken for a ride.

At one point Beck makes the guy wait so they can run the commercials, and it was…from “run-outta-NY and D.C.” to “buy whatever they were selling.” I tell my wife, “do you think this is serious?”…”Well”…she says,”they have to advertise to be on the air”. Yeah, but…if you have an interview of this caliber…I won’t stop and my sponsors would understand…I think.

And also, if you are AlQuaeda, do you want to announce an attack of any magnitude on the US? My take: all propaganda that was sold to Glenn, and he bought it.

Ropera on September 21, 2006 at 9:03 AM

Glenn is an alarmist, but I tend to believe him on this one. I just read an editorial in my local paper today about how the US isn’t at war with Islam, but that Islam is at war with the US. I don’t put ANYTHING past islamic terrorists. I think they will go to all extremes to try to destroy us. The idea of a nuke in our country scares the crapola out of me.

pullingmyhairout on September 21, 2006 at 9:36 AM

I listened to Glenn Beck when he was only aired locally, in Tampa. Funny guy. I actually called in once when he was talking about profiling (this was before 9/11, so it was for regular criminals). He was mildly against it, at the time, but I got him to reconsider. Now if you listen to him, he’s all for it. ;-)

equal rights means equal rights to nukes for genocidal religious zealots as well. You guys are way to discriminatory.

can i gag now?

Ramadan starts Sunday. Get your iodine pills.

Valiant on September 21, 2006 at 10:16 AM

I only caught a few minutes of the first hour this morning. When I turned it on Glenn was apologizing for “sloppy” reporting on his part, but I missed the lead-up to that comment. Sounded like they mistook something from a 2005 speech for the one from this week. Maybe unrelated to the above story though.

Again, live here if you can listen.

Valiant… WTF ever… have fun in your bunker…

Sacwannabe on September 21, 2006 at 10:26 AM

Sac, sorry the link did not come through. I was being cautiously sarcastic.

Valiant on September 21, 2006 at 10:37 AM

Islam vs Christianity. Armageddon. The Second Coming. Christ holding hands with Mohammed and calling for world conversion to Islam.

Verbal insanity coming from single-minded, faith driven lunatics who are promising to strike America. They intend to put their words into action.

I hope our intelligence community has it’s ears perked up and eyes well focused on terrorist movement and chatter leading up to December 25th. Scary thought, but I hope we’re on top of this possibility.

fogw on September 21, 2006 at 10:47 AM

Glenn is not an alarmist…sorry. I’ve listened to the guy for 4 years. He puts plausible situations out there and some he believe may happen. But that doesn’t make one an alarmist, implying that one overreacts with knees jerking to the latest tidbit of rumor or news. Glenn is funny. But he’s also got a lot of street smarts. Doesn’t mean he was or was not taken for a ride on this one. But the guy is NOT an alarmist.

BirdEye on September 21, 2006 at 10:47 AM

Guys like Mir have stories so heavy most programmers are afraid to touch them. The threat is so great I take them seriously until proven otherwise.

Canada Free Press has good information on Shrukrijumah

CFP also has the text of the Mir interview, and an audio of Michael Savage discussing the Mir story

One interesting point in the audio, 18% of FOX Newcorp is now owned by a Saudi prince. Oil money has to go somewhere

I hope Mir is wrong. Rumors of 911 were rife in the islamic world well before it happened. Wherther rumor or other reason, the veiled women have disappeared from the public square here, even at night when Ramadan normally brings them out.

Sheesh

entagor on September 21, 2006 at 11:28 AM

The MSM probably is not covering this story because they don’t want to encourage shutting off illegal immigration. They are all for open borders.

However, in post-9/11, I can’t imagine the CIA not taking every precaution to ensure that suitcase nukes could not enter the U.S. Even if they did, how would a terrorist blow up D.C.? There would be no way for him to get the bomb into Washington. From my understanding, there are radiation sensors on every possible route and road leading into Washington.

januarius on September 21, 2006 at 11:29 AM

well if the liberal democrats come into power, then the NSA program will be disbanded

Starblazer on September 21, 2006 at 12:17 PM

For what it’s worth,

“Then when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them captive, and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush.” (Surah 9-5)

Fighting during the holy months is forbidden in the Quran. Also, it is customary to invite the enemy to Islam prior to attacking. Al-Qaeda has been criticized by some Islamic clerics for failing to adhere to these “rules” of jihad, hence the recent invitations from Zawahiri and Adam Ghadan. If bin Laden is aspiring to be more Islamically correct, as the invitations would seem to indicate, then he probably will not attack during Ramadan.

RedWinged Blackbird on September 21, 2006 at 12:23 PM

I’ve always had the feeling that Bin Laden and company travelled to Iran after 9-11. However can the CIA prove this? Who knows?

If Bin Laden attacks with a nuke or Dirty bomb, Muslims around the world will have hell to pay. Not only from us but from Israel, Russia, Australia, Japan, the UK, countries that will then attack and persecute harshly.

Does he not see this?

Also, no worries in the big scheme of things, Bin Laden’s next attack will only kill some 200 thousand. Remember the USA has a population of 300 Million.

Like Japan, its Emperor Culture and it’s suicide bombers – we need to snuff the Radical Islam with a few big blows.

This campaign might not happen soon – but rather later… after some 1 million innocent individuals are killed. Or after our U.S. economy takes a 50% loss – 13 Trillion GDP cut in half…

Then and only then will Islam be in danger.

All I can say is thank you HotAir, Glenn Beck, and Michael Savage for providing us with the real news. And to all the loyal and inlightened followers, God Bless Us All. I find it so very sad that our Government has been quagmired into being pushed around and constantly threatened and intimidated by a handful of two bit bullies. You can waste your time trying to kiss up to the bully. But he’ll still pick on you. You can try to avoid the bully. But he will find you. You can try to get help from someone to stop the bully. But all your allies are scared too. All that can be left to do is this…Stop kissing his a$$, stop running and stand tall, and stop the bullie yourself, once and for all. Knock em on his a$$ and then pummle the hell out of him. And in a few years, sometimes the bully, turns out to be a pretty cool guy. For those who are not grasping this simple correlation, insert the word terrorist for bullie and wa la. Let’s Rock and Roll!

soulsirkus on September 21, 2006 at 1:17 PM

Just a note on “radiation sensors”:

Nukes emit neutrons. Neutrons do not have an electrical charge, and cannot be detected by a geiger counter.

Special sensors DO exist that can detect neutron emissions, but they cannot detect neutron emissions from long range. We have better sensors now than we did on 9/11, but we have a long ways to go before we can count on them to find a smuggled nuke.

EternalHope on September 21, 2006 at 2:48 PM

So it’s “irresponsible jihadi-nuke rumor-mongering” when I write about this exact topic (citing Hamid Mir and all) 4 months ago…but it’s “a coup”, and “excellent, excellent work” when Glenn Beck says it? Funny, that. :D

Should I be taking that personally, darlin’? Just kiddin’. :)

All of a sudden, I don’t feel like such a lonely alarmist anymore.

Redhead Infidel on September 21, 2006 at 2:52 PM

What is your take on the probability that al Qaeda (or any other Islamist group) could have acquired a nuke or enough fissile material to make one? Everything I’ve seen on the subject is inconclusive. One side of the argument is supported by people with books to sell, while the other side relies almost entirely on the word of the Russian government.

RedWinged Blackbird on September 21, 2006 at 3:10 PM

Oops! I meant to address that question to Redhead Infidel, but I’d certainly be interested in anyone’s opinion.

RedWinged Blackbird on September 21, 2006 at 3:17 PM

Well, since the breakup of the Soviet Union there are at least four former soviet republics that are largely Muslim. The former republics claim to have given up all of those weapons, but who really knows for sure? Fissile material isn’t impossible to get either, there have been large amounts stolen from nuclear facilities in the United States. (although many years ago) Also, as early as 1967 a government study warned about the realistic threat that terrorists could steal nuclear material and use it to build a nuclear bomb. Frankly I’m surprised that it’s we’ve not been hit yet and I believe that it’s only a matter of time. Make no mistake, we are in a war, a REAL war, and our enemies are plenty and deadly serious about destroying us. If Al Qaeda doesn’t have a nuke at this time, sooner or later it will.
