Not to be outdone by his pal Ahmadinejad last night, el presidente’s having a full-blown meltdown at the podium before the General Assembly as I write this, shrieking about Bush being “the devil” and hollering “Yankee imperialists go home.” I’ll have video, but maybe not for a while; there are a lot of highlights to find and cut here. In the meantime, use this as an open thread.
Update: Here you go. He praises Castro, recommends Chomsky’s book, and calls upon the world to grant him a seat on the UN Security Council so that he can help usher in the type of peace and prosperity for which the Arab and Latin American worlds are so well known and loved. It’s vaudeville, revolutionary style. Transcript here.
The “Bush is the devil” stuff is right at the beginning, which makes things easy on lefty visitors who have cruised over here to bust a nut.
Update: Three different people have e-mailed to say there’s a rumor that Chavez used the Arabic term “insh’allah” (God willing) at his press conference. I didn’t see it, but I’ll bet it’s true. After all, he’s used that phrase before.
Update: Yup, according to Fox, he said it. How pleased his new Muslim allies must be.

Holding a Chomsky book? Talk about reinforcing stereotypes.

What a joke.
“The devil came here yesterday,” Chavez said. “He came here talking as if he were the owner of the world.” Source: CNN

We live here. This is our home. Get off our soil.
If you mean Iraq and Afghanistan, we don’t want to be there, and we will leave when the time is right. If THEY put down there weapons for good, we are outtathere!

Keep an eye on this DU thread. It’s going to be…legendary.

Naturally (and despicably), over at Democratic Underground, the theme is “Viva Chavez!”
CP on September 20, 2006 at 11:54 AM
Did anyone in the audience blink during this speech?
Number 2 on September 20, 2006 at 11:54 AM
CP…good find.
My favorite comments?
WOW…. Chavez kicked Bush ass !
Chavez gave a fantastic straight to the point speech, that told it just like it is… The imperialism of the US is going to destroy the world, if not stopped.
No political side-stepping, no forked-tongue talking; Chavez spoke in the common mans language !
He brought up Noam Chomskys book and recommended everyone at the UN to read it.
Unbelievable speech !
VIVA CHAVEZ !!!!!!
VIVA CHAVEZ !!!!

I know it’ll never happen but..
..can you imagine Stewart and Colbert having this guy as a guest LOL!!
Slublog on September 20, 2006 at 11:57 AM
I wanna know of he took off his sandals and pounded the podium! No Mas!
Kini on September 20, 2006 at 11:58 AM
No, but they clapped like hell. Disgusting!!
RobertCSampson on September 20, 2006 at 12:01 PM
Let me get this straight: Liberals love Noam Chomsky. Noam Chomsky and Hugo Chavez love each other. Chavez loves the Iranians who love terrorists. Yet liberals, including those who post comments on hotair such as honora, cannot figure out how their political allegiance supports terrorists. Follow the chain.
I always see it as a good sign when leftists are having mental meltdowns on stage. President Bush must be doing something right.
januarius on September 20, 2006 at 12:01 PM
Is he promoting the book of the month club in Venezuela?
Please read this book. It has lot’s of pictures and no big words. It’s an easy read.
The smell of sulfur is cause he farted.

I think Chavez should speak at the UN more often. It was some of the best comedic entertainment on TV that I’ve seen in a long time.
I do agree with him on one thing, though. The UN needs to move elsewhere. Its taking up a lot of valuable real estate that could be generating tax revenue, not wasting it.
.
GT on September 20, 2006 at 12:07 PM
If we were the evil nation this guy thinks were are, he’d return home to “the smell of sulfer” and a pile of rubble which used to be Caracas.
Tony737 on September 20, 2006 at 12:07 PM
Januarius,
If Kevin Bacon is a liberal, then you can use the 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon theory of relativity to further justify your argument.
BirdEye on September 20, 2006 at 12:09 PM
These dictators come here, speak their mind in a land of free speech and then go home and imprison their people that speak out. These clowns are having a real party and figure that at least half of America agrees with them.
Really sad times.
Hening on September 20, 2006 at 12:12 PM
Does he know any pee-pee or poo-poo jokes? There must be a lot of 12 year old boys in the audience, if they thought he was funny.

Yep…. If Kevin Bacon is a liberal…
Kevin Bacon…
Moslems hate bacon….

you know what maybe we should pull all of our troops from every country (even Iraq & Afghan)& see what really happens & see how long it will take these same countries that hate us so much to ask the U.S. for help
Starblazer on September 20, 2006 at 12:19 PM
What the F*** is the UN still doing in this country subsidized by US??!!
Reality Check on September 20, 2006 at 12:19 PM
Birdeye,
The six degrees of separation is a bad analogy. It is not who you know or have met; it is who you support. Liberals support Noam Chomsky, Hugo Chavez, and the like, who in turn support the Iranians, who support terrorists.
Where do conservatives such as President Bush fit in this chain? The answer: They don’t. Liberals do.
januarius on September 20, 2006 at 12:21 PM
wouldn’t it be nice to see all the liberal democrats come out to defend Chavez’s comments.
Starblazer on September 20, 2006 at 12:21 PM
Wow, some speech. Thanks Slublog for posting the link to the DU. What a bunch of freaks! Well, just watching Fox now & KP just said she thought the President gave a good speech.

If Bush is the devil, what are these tools going to do after Jan ‘09?
Pablo on September 20, 2006 at 12:29 PM
Well … Charles Chaplin shot “The Great Dictator” in the early 1940s, mocking Hitler’s grotesque appearances and ludicrous policies. After the end of war Chaplin said that if he knew about the true extent of Nazism beforehand, and that Hitler’s riling against Jews actually led to the mass-murder of millions of them, he wouldn’t have laughed at Hitler, and certainly not made the movie.

I dunno, Chavez sort of sounds like Keith Olbermann with an accent, to me.
Mr. Bingley on September 20, 2006 at 12:35 PM
Chavez continues to be the toast of Washington liberal elites in the msm. He will be attending a DNC fundraiser tonight at Hillarys DC mansion.

How long was the stand-up routine of Comandante Chavez?
Talking about the diablo? Chavez is the one that usually wears red, like a true commie. His country is emptying, I mean, the people with some money, business owners, high management personnel, etc, are leaving Venezuela.
The only good thing about this guy, is that he shows his teeth right away. Hopefully the people in Venezuela will rise against this cabro…n.

Kos, on 8/30, made a post that used George Allen’s own quote to attack him. Allen said, “You can tell a lot about people by the folks they stand with.” Kos then agreed with that sentiment while using it to tie Allen to the Council of Conservative Citizens.
It never ceases to amaze me how it’s so easy for the left to connect the dots when they want to, but how anyone who expresses anti-Bush or anti-American sentiment receives a free pass from any scrutiny of their associations. Witness Chavez and the company he keeps.

I do agree with this asswipe on one thing… GET THE U.N. THE HELL OUT OF THE U.S.A. AND NOW! NOT TOMORROW, NOT NEXT WEEK…. NOW!!!! Evacuate the damn building, give them all their walking papers, an airline ticket back to their countries, and bulldoze the damn building!
Bring John Bolton on now and have him ream Chavez in the same damn way! #!%$J#!@!$%!@#$

The world was a safer place when our CIA would covertly move in under cover of darkness and make these imbecile madmen dictators disappear. Thank you Gerald Ford!
Shut down the UN now. Shut off all funding immediately to the home countries of these thugs who come and visit the land of the free and trash our president, and receive thunderous applause from the other wothless suckling members at the UN.
These pompous bastards like Chavez and Ahmadinejad should have been escorted out of the General Assembly by a few of our finest marines, kicking and screaming as they were set adrift in a rowboat in the NY harbor.

In any case, the UN should be drummed out of the US now.

honora on September 20, 2006 at 1:43 PM
Clue-in honora: 1. Democracy, the institution, is not the problem. People’s moral character is. 2. Chavez was recalled, but he ignored the results. Now he’s a DICK-tator.
Andy in Agoura Hills on September 20, 2006 at 2:02 PM
No democracy is the problem in that it permits all manner of people to be elected, regardless of their morals or their competence. That’s actually the point of democracy. It’s not a silver bullet, nor even appropriate to many nations.
honora on September 20, 2006 at 2:10 PM
Charles Lichenstein, American delegate to the UN, in 1983 (from the New York Times):
“If in the judicious determination of the members of the United Nations they feel they were not welcome and treated with the hostly consideration that is their due,” Mr. Lichenstein said, “the United States strongly encourages member states to seriously consider removing themselves and this organization from the soil of the United States.”
“We will put no impediment in your way,” Mr. Lichenstein said, “and we will be at dockside bidding you a farewell as you set off into the sunset.”

BTW, Chavez did have one good suggestion…moving the UN out of the United States. I’d go for that.

crackhora,
I think we’ve made some real progress toward understanding your underlying political philosophy today, but let’s delve a little further.
If Democracy is not “appropriate to many nations,” what would be an adequate replacement in those places? Royalty, totalitarian communism, benign dictatorship, military junta, theocracy?
Let’s explore this; I am hearing a clear endorsement of the rule of Saddam Hussein in pre-war Iraq.
Jaibones on September 20, 2006 at 3:06 PM

And never forget my child how the old bad history was replaced with our wonderful new history written by our beautiful bronze ancestors. Thy came in hordes from the south and were glorious in victory over the old bad America. Rejoice, rejoice our savior Hugo has wrought our deliverence into the new world. Never again will the Euros enslave us and write our history.

Honora,
Please, please tell me that you aren’t going to defend Chavez…he’s a nutjob and your pals over at DU just absolutely ADORE him. HOW ON GOD’S GREEN EARTH CAN YOU STILL BE LIBERAL AFTER READING WHAT IS SAID OVER AT DU? Please come over from the dark side.
Democracy has its kinks, but it’s a hell of a lot better than living in tyranny. Don’t you agree? If not democracy, THEN WHAT?? What IS appropriate for many nations? Are you suggesting that people in lesser developed countries are incapable of sowing the seeds of freedom and democracy? I REALLY hope that’s not what you are saying.

Hugo’s childhood nickname is “Tribilin”, or in english, Goofy, after the Dinsey cartoon character.
His most ardent supports are “Chavistas” or as I would translate, Goofytes. Heh.
F. Rottles on September 20, 2006 at 4:07 PM
pullingmyhairout: sorry for not copying your remarks but I seem to screw that up whenever there’s an imbedded quote.
1. Of course I don’t defend Chavez.
2. Are you responsible for everything said by conservatives? Like Hitchens recent defense of the McCain stance re the Geneva Convention? Or that nutcase who haunts military funerals with his “fag” signs? Or the people who bomb abortion clinics? These people self identify as conservatives, so you get the point.
3. What I am referencing is Bush’s mantra that democracy is the answer, regardless of the question. There are countries where democracy is not the answer, at least not yet. Iraq being the obvious example.
honora on September 20, 2006 at 4:10 PM
