Taliban, Mark II

The Soviets left Afghanistan and eventually a gaggle of Islamic students filled the vacuum of power. They were called talibani, which is a derivation of the Arab word “talib” and means “students.” These schoolboys formed the harsh, Islamist movement that came to be known as the Taliban. So much for effective student government.

The Taliban today is mostly a hidebound, cave-dwelling movement attempting to take Afghanistan back into the dark ages our invasion took it out of in 2001 and 2002. But in Somalia, a new Taliban is born.

Islamic militants who control of much of southern Somalia said Tuesday they will open training camps for Somali students to prepare them for a holy war against any foreign peacekeepers sent here.

Students=talib. It’s the same old problem–give Islamic rule a free hand and this is what you get: training camps for “students” to mount jihad.

It’s also a glimpse of what might become of Iraq if we leave too soon.

Update (Allahpundit): Taliban, mark I, says it’s got 500 suicide bombers ready to hit Kabul. Yuh huh.
