Smug, Bush-hating, atheist HuffPo contributor: Liberals dangerously soft on terror

Somehow Mary K and I ended up in a debate about religion last night, and I told her that if you showed me “Loose Change” and “The Greatest Story Ever Told” and asked me which one was more likely to be true, I dare say I’d gots to go with the LC. She took that in good humor, secure in the knowledge that I’d soon be consumed with guilt for having compared, however obliquely, Christians to appalling morons like Dylan Avery. She was right.
In the spirit of reconciliation, I offer this morning’s op-ed in the LA Times by militant atheist Sam Harris. It’s sprinkled with the usual equivalence about religious lunatics over there versus religious “lunatics” over here, but stick with it. Pure gold:
[D]espite abundant evidence to the contrary, liberals continue to imagine that Muslim terrorism springs from economic despair, lack of education and American militarism…
[L]iberal denial has found expression in a growing subculture of conspiracy theorists who believe that the atrocities of 9/11 were orchestrated by our own government. A nationwide poll conducted by the Scripps Survey Research Center at Ohio University found that more than a third of Americans suspect that the federal government “assisted in the 9/11 terrorist attacks or took no action to stop them so the United States could go to war in the Middle East;” 16% believe that the twin towers collapsed not because fully-fueled passenger jets smashed into them but because agents of the Bush administration had secretly rigged them to explode.
Such an astonishing eruption of masochistic unreason could well mark the decline of liberalism, if not the decline of Western civilization. There are books, films and conferences organized around this phantasmagoria, and they offer an unusually clear view of the debilitating dogma that lurks at the heart of liberalism: Western power is utterly malevolent, while the powerless people of the Earth can be counted on to embrace reason and tolerance, if only given sufficient economic opportunities.
I don’t know how many more engineers and architects need to blow themselves up, fly planes into buildings or saw the heads off of journalists before this fantasy will dissipate. The truth is that there is every reason to believe that a terrifying number of the world’s Muslims now view all political and moral questions in terms of their affiliation with Islam. This leads them to rally to the cause of other Muslims no matter how sociopathic their behavior. This benighted religious solidarity may be the greatest problem facing civilization and yet it is regularly misconstrued, ignored or obfuscated by liberals.
Harris’s piece doesn’t mention the Pope. If you’re curious about his take on that, see here. It won’t surprise you. Neither will another hot new post, also at HuffPo, by RJ Eskow that’s charmingly entitled, “Spiritual Niggers: Islam and the West.”
Meanwhile, in Pakistan, fundamentalist Muslim women are out in the streets protesting against reforms to the country’s rape laws that would make it possible to convict rapists on the testimony of fewer than four witnesses. The left is mighty curious as to why conservatives would vote against their economic interests in Kansas, not so curious as to why Muslim women would embrace their own brutalization. Why the difference? Harris knows.

“Such an astonishing eruption of masochistic unreason could well mark the decline of liberalism,…”
Yep.

The left is a threat to the Republic and cannot be taken lightly. They should be met and challenged head-on wherever they exist.

Sam Harris is right because there is no current war (WOT) at this time, and we sure don’t want to piss them (Islamo-nazis) off anymore. I mean, we already started a needless war in Iraq, why stir the pot anymore…Pope?
On a serious note, I do agree with Sam as to his discussion on “liberal denial” quoted above. He did hit the nail on the head on that one. Too bad more liberals don’t see it that way. They continue to see things much like RJ Eskow does in his piece - if we just cater to these poor simple-minded fools, they will see the error of their ways. The U.S. just needs to stay out of the way - focus the fight here on the evil conservatives and keep them on their leashes.

They’re not soft on terrorism, they’re just a little soft on who the terrorists are….
Found this on DU this morning:
Yesterday, I Bought a Gun. It’s a nice .223 mod. What did I buy it for you ask? Protection, nope. Hunting, nope. Harm to Others, Nope. I bought it for the day in my life when a war comes to my backdoor. I plan to keep it safe and very secure from my family and never intend to use it until either the Republican Army or the christians come knocking on my door.
With that said, if they come with hostility, I’ll blow their kneecaps off.

The Liberal paragons of progressiveness are conspicuously missing on the terrorization of women in the world.
This befuddles me to no end - where is NOW & CO, Mrs. Clinton/Mr. Schumer & CO, Barbra Streisand & CO, Kirsten Powers & CO, Maureen Dowd & CO, Katie Couric & CO?

Being tolerant of other cultures.

Again we have a liberal waking up to the fact that liberalism doesn’t work in the real World via the Bush speech in which he tells the nation that interrogations will stop if McCain, and the 11 democrats on the security council get their way. Big deal!
The question that remains is will Sam Harris, and other liberals vote against democrats in this election, or feel prepared to risk more attacks on American soil. I believe they will chose the latter, and natural selection will then take place.

George Bush is the President…not a school principal….
Put lying McCain in his place.
Stop the pussyfooting
WE are the greatest nation on earth…our states are larger than most countries….

Well, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
Thus Harris’ enlightenment….his comments will either be vilified or ignored by his fellow travelers.

They’ll probably jump on him with both feet. Maybe I’m doing him a disservice, but I wonder how much of this has to do with his new book “Letter to a Christian Nation.” Ordinarily conservative Christians would ignore him. At the moment, he’s got their attention.

Sam is sort of a cross between Che’ Guevera and Carl Sagan. He wrote an article earlier this year titled “Religion Must Be Destroyed.” I don’t think he’s calling for any murders in that process, but one does get the sense that he is every bit as bent on world domination as OBL (for our own good of course).
