My Arabic is rusty, but I still remember my Arabic grammar rules. “Alsam Taslam” is phrased using the imperitive form which, in English, is second person voice with the “you” omitted as understood. Example: “Clean your room, young man!”

In Arabic the command form is an Aleph prefix, pronounced with a soft “i” sound, placed before the root form of the word, in this case, “selema” which means “he submitted.” (And from the same word we get Islam.)

Therefore, the literal translation of “Alsam Taslam” is “Submit to Islam, young man!”

Personally, I don’t have a problem with such fiery rhetoric. In fact, these linguistic patterns are fascinating study. It’s only when religious leaders assert the superiority of their beliefs using bombs as punctuation marks that I moves me to object.
