Highlights from today’s presser. How would we like it, asked Gregory, if North Korea treated captured American prisoners the way we treat Khaled Sheikh Mohammed?

If only.

Thanks for the help to Mary K, who watched this so I didn’t have to. Her liveblog’s at the link; transcript’s here.

I like when the President calls David Gregory, “Dave”.

I have a feeling that irritates him which is, I’m sure, why Bush does it.

Gregory is a pompous ass.

Rosetta on September 15, 2006 at 4:04 PM

Gregory needs to be yelled at.

The Prez showing some stones. I like it.

Corky on September 15, 2006 at 4:08 PM

Unbelievable to ask if the President would sit down with Amadinnerjacket.

Tool.

And David Gregory is an idiot.

CrimsonFisted on September 15, 2006 at 4:14 PM

Dave was bitch-slapped.

pullingmyhairout on September 15, 2006 at 4:21 PM

‘W’ says “I know YOU think its important”…while the rest of the group thinks … dave, shut up , you quack.

Dave Gregory- his narcissistic arrogance probably doesnt even allow for him to feel uncomfortable when the Prez dumps on him in front of the world. Like the walking to school naked nightmare...but he really is living in the middle of that nightmare. Wake up davie.

shooter on September 15, 2006 at 4:30 PM

Gregory is a idiot and he should have his ass kicked all the way to Richmond. Some of these punk journalists are absolutely disgusting. The bum should find a job he can handle but I don’t think Wendy’s is hiring.

rplat on September 15, 2006 at 4:35 PM

I love it when the President gets on Gregory. He’s such an ass. I can’t believe this sad, partisan excuse for a reporter is still on tv. He shows absolutely no respect for the President and really makes himself look like a fool on national television.

Catie96706 on September 15, 2006 at 4:41 PM

The NYTimes exchange was amusing. Gregory is a preening fool. I too loved the “I know YOU think it’s important”
You could hear his snort when asked about the Iranian midget before he even answered “No..I’m not gonna sit down with him”
That question was ridiculous too..in order to “show” he “respects” the Iranian people he is to meet the midget.

labwrs on September 15, 2006 at 4:48 PM

The POTUS is finally standing up and letting it be known exactly how he feels.

Bic on September 15, 2006 at 4:50 PM

It is extremely irresponsible for a “journalist” to pose those questions to our POTUS without having read the story linked above. Most journalists have become a branch of the enemy. The enemy’s mouthpiece.

Ethics, responsibility, and truth have disappeared from most journalism, as Dave so brilliantly demonstrates.

NTWR on September 15, 2006 at 5:03 PM

Awesome line about the NYT at the end. I love it when Bush is feisty. I wish he had been like this for the last five years.

Jiggity on September 15, 2006 at 5:03 PM

Gregory looks a bit like a chimp doesn’t he? If you really look close, I think we can all see “Cornelius” from “Planet of the Apes” peeking out, but I digress. One of my biggest problems with President Bush, is that he never confronts leftist ideology for being what it is, leftist ideology. When the press strays from being neutral (when are they ever?), they should be called on it each and every time. Like when Tony Snow was being heckled by Hiz Chimpness and he said, “Now that you’ve given us the Democrat point of view”, that was classic!
Clinton was very good at answering criticism while managing to point out the bias of his critics, this is something Bush would do well to adopt. A typical tactic of the yellow journalism practised by Gregory and his ilk, is selective coverage. They are able to do this because the Republicans are too dumb to give their members the same talking points. See, if every Republican who was asked about the recent 9/11 brohaha had said, “well, Clinton’s upset but I heard him say out of his own mouth that He could’ve brought Bin Laden to the U.S. but he didn’t have a “legal basis”, for doing so”, imagine the result. The press would either have to print what they said or have NO OTHER QUOTES ON ANYTHING from Republicans! But a typical day for the feckless Republicans starts like this. One Rep holds a press conference in one place supporting the presidents tax cuts, another in another location, points out the hypocrisy of the press as they argued for Saddams removal pursuant to Clinton’s directives in 1998, who do you think they’ll cover? ‘Nuff Said.

Sam will soon have little Davie to join him in the dustbin of history.

Mr. Gregory may want to review the USS Pueblo incident.

Once having arrived in Wanson Harbor, the Pueblo crew was quickly transferred by train to Pyongyoung … The Commanding Officer was isolated from the others, who were quartered three or four to a room. Crew members were threatened with death, interrogated, and some were severely beaten. “Confessions” as to “criminal aggressive acts” were obtained from all crew members as a result of these threats and ill-treatment.

Their treatment by the North Koreans varied; in general the living quarters, sanitation facilities and medical care were unsatisfactory by western standards. Food was deficient both quality and quantity. Physical maltreatment was concentrated in two specific periods — the first three weeks (i.e. until all had “confessed”) and a “purge” two weeks prior to release in an effort to obtain names of those crew members who had attempted to communicate their lack of sincerity to the western world. (Propaganda photographs often showed smiling faces in association with obscene gestures.) Physical abuse consisted of fist assaults or kicks in the head or groin. Several crew members who were forced to squat with an inch square stick behind their knees reported losing consciousness and, as a result of the beatings, one man had a fractured jaw. Through lectures, field trips, and written material, the North Koreans attempted to convince crew members of the injustices of their “imperialist” government.

Somebody in this often clueless White House needs to show President Bush this press conference again and tell him THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT!!! The American people love the guy that stands there and swats these MSM idiots away, reminding the world that he takes his job to protect the country seriously.

Sugar Land on September 15, 2006 at 5:22 PM

Please, please, please let him have said “It would have been a hell of an improvement”.

Blaise on September 15, 2006 at 5:33 PM

Would I what like to know is Does David Gregory actually think any Middle Eastern country or any other country in the world follows any standards in interrogation that the USA does?

The short answer is of course not.

They behead, torture, and abuse prisoners so why should the USA abide by non existent standards.

McCain and his cronies have gone off the deep end.

ScottyDog on September 15, 2006 at 5:43 PM

It would be great if, in his final days as President, Bush fielded some similarly moronic scenario (posed as a question) to Bush and Bush untied his tie, threw off his jacket and said, “Dave, I’m gonna’ kick your a$$!”

It would also be funny if he walked over to Helen Thomas and flicked her ears.

Bellicose Muse on September 15, 2006 at 5:46 PM

Gregory should be stripped of his press pass and made persona-non-grata at the White House, except for the public-access areas for tours.

He is insufferable as well as being an ass.

georgej on September 15, 2006 at 5:54 PM

I love Tony’s grin, in the picture, behind D. Gregory’s ego.

Bellicose Muse on September 15, 2006 at 5:46 PM

I think this would be good too – the Pres. let’s David ask his usually inane and never-ending quadrupled question, then contemplates during a lengthy pause, and says:

Sorry, I’ve got to get disentangled

Entelechy on September 15, 2006 at 5:58 PM

These reporters, especially TV reporters like Gregory, are constantly positioning themselves for a promotion.

Their company line is “we are just trying to ask the tough questions” but many reporters are only trying to create new milestones in their own careers.

Gregory is aware that he’s developing a “tough guy” persona, so now everytime he asks the President a question, he’s really just auditioning for a big anchor job, or his own show. Seriously.

realVerse on September 15, 2006 at 5:59 PM

Ditto to all who have mentioned it, I love the Feisty version of W.

Sacwannabe on September 15, 2006 at 6:35 PM

Ever notice that the increasing poll numbers aren’t being reporeted hourly like his low poll numbers? A few more of these and he may top 50%. I know he doesn’t care about polls, but ppl need to understand and he needs to be out there more like he was today. I love this guy!

lsutiger on September 15, 2006 at 7:50 PM

I think the President is getting sick of the anarchist media. I wish he’d gotten sick of them years ago.

By the way, am I the only one who thinks he shouldn’t call Gregory ‘Dave’? Personally, I think he should call him ‘Davey’, or ‘Davey Boy’, or my personal favorite: ‘Prick.’

Wolfman on September 15, 2006 at 7:50 PM

I wish the Prez would do more of these. He’s a tough talker and everytime he does this the poll numbers take off. That shows you where America stands really IMHO.

I liked how he told David he was a late starter and a late finisher. lol.

johnnyU on September 15, 2006 at 8:21 PM

I only with the President would perform like he did today every time he speaks. It was forceful and certainly gave the impression he is in charge, there are very difficult decisions to make, and he doesn’t give a rat’s ass if the MSM likes it or not.

Gregory got bitch-slapped by the Man and he’s now thinking……DAMN, first Tony Snow and now GWB!!

Seriously though, I thought he made it crystal clear we NEED to have the means to get answers. Now, in a brilliant political move, he’s thrown the choclate donut back to congress to precisly define how our “intellegence professionals” can break kneecaps to get the information they need.

Let’s see how McCain, Warner and the other RINOS precisely define Common Article III of the Geneva Convention which says that there will be no outrages upon human dignity.

BacaDog on September 15, 2006 at 8:35 PM

Gregory makes Bush look great. I hope he doesn’t get replaced due to that.

DannoJyd on September 15, 2006 at 8:51 PM

Gregory even looks unintelligent, so nothing he says should be shockingly dimwitted… But then he says crap like this…

DAVEY: But how would you like it if other countries were able to interpret Article 3 as they saw fit?

Yeah, there is nothing open to interpretation at all in “outrages against human dignity“, a phrase that serves as a model of specifity. Why would we want to give them something so vague and easily abused as a specific list of enumerated crimes?

Maybe Davey would prefer that we rewrite Article 4? It’s a little too specific about what consitutes a POW… maybe we should make that a bit more generic. That could be useful.

DaveS on September 15, 2006 at 9:40 PM

Davey, and the rest of the MSM were quick to talk about the republicans who jumped ship on this important piece of legislation, but they forgot neglected to state the names of All Eleven Democrats in the Senate Armed Services Committee who were so quick to give Geneva protections to Terrorists…

Carl Levin (Michigan)
Ranking Member
Edward M. Kennedy (Massachusetts)
Robert C. Byrd (West Virginia)
Joseph I. Lieberman (Connecticut)
Jack Reed (Rhode Island)
Daniel K. Akaka (Hawaii)
Bill Nelson (Florida)
E. Benjamin Nelson (Nebraska)
Mark Dayton (Minnesota)
Evan Bayh (Indiana)
Hillary Rodham Clinton (New York)

How is that for fair, and balanced?

DannoJyd on September 15, 2006 at 10:26 PM

I agree. Where was that guy in the Bush-Kerry debates? The American people will like and rally around that guy, and leave the Al Frankenstein types in the dust.

brazilnut on September 15, 2006 at 10:46 PM

Gregory looks a bit like a chimp doesn’t he?

Lol… Dude, you’re right. I don’t want to get in to the whole “chimp” thing though, because we’ve heard the left call Bush “Chimpy” so much over the years… but damn it, you are right about Gregory.

Anyway, thanks for posting this clip AP, that was great. I only caught the “friendly paper” part on TV earlier, but the Gregory moments are priceless. I just wish you’d had the clip (or maybe it was two clips) of Gregory vs. Snow earlier in the week. Classic stuff. This has been a great week for making the White House Press folks look like total asses. The only sad part is that most people will never know about it.

Also, I have to mention that I totally agree with everyone who said something to the effect of “This is the Bush we want to see”. Where the hell is this guy 99% of the time? He’s great in settings like this and in town hall Q&As, etc. It’s when he’s on a script that he comes off as an idiot, I think because he tries to paraphrase rather than stick to the script and comes up with sentences that are all mixed up and come out weird. I may be going to far, but I’d almost like to see him say to Gregory “Look Dean, why don’t you take off the effing David Gregory mask, we all know it’s you in there… YAAAAAARGH”

RightWinged on September 16, 2006 at 1:07 AM

I wonder why president Bush didn’t refer to Guatanamo Bay prison as the model standard on prisoners treatment when it comes to the Geneva convention. Wasn’t Fox news offered unprecendented access to the prison not too long ago? Where is that link?

Kokonut on September 16, 2006 at 11:02 AM

Ha!

CrimsonFisted,

That’s one of the best I’ve heard. I’m going to have to steal that for my own use.

The MSM is ignoring the drop in gas prices too. Funny, they reported every penny in increase as it was on the rise.

I think David Gregory is Dick Gregory’s illegitimate son. They both seem to read from the same anti-Bush playbook.

Porky Boy over in Korea, probably took a break from watching The Munsters, to give Davey a standing ovation.
