Harvard sits silent while Khatami defends executing gays

A few lines from Yeats come to mind, but they don’t really work. It’s not really “the best” who lack all conviction here, is it?
Khatami, widely considered a reformer in Iran, was often met with applause from the Kennedy School audience…
In response to another question, Khatami also justified his country’s use of capital punishment for acts of homosexuality, but said that the conditions for execution are so strict that they are “virtually impossible to meet.”
“Homosexuality is a crime in Islam and crimes are punishable,” Khatami said. “And the fact that a crime could be punished by execution is debatable.”
The audience responded with silence to his remark.
The subject of the lecture was “Ethics of Tolerance in the Age of Violence.”

In Somalia, the Islamists just closed down “un-Islamic” radio for playing love songs. In Pakistan, Musharraf’s given up on reforming the country’s rape laws to make convictions possible with fewer than four witnesses. And in the Kingdom, they’ve outlawed the sale of puppies and kittens. Because of “western influence.”
It’s going to be a long war.
Update: Shawn Macomber has an entertaining take on Khatami’s speech at AmSpec. “Mark the time. We got another good one.”

Gays apparently are no longer part of the left wing/terror alliance.
Valiant on September 13, 2006 at 2:08 PM
The Left will allow any atrocity by the animals of the world so long as they throw in “Bush Sucks” or “America is he Great Satan”, to the moonbats this absolves them of all other trangression.
bbz123 on September 13, 2006 at 2:17 PM
You’ve nailed it.
The “centre” is not holding and the more I look at things the more I wonder if there is not “some rough beast slouching towards Bethlehem to be born”.
Blaise on September 13, 2006 at 2:18 PM
What is this statement from? Walking a dog, a pet.
Talk about your backwards society.
shooter on September 13, 2006 at 2:21 PM
From your link:
“The prohibition on dogs may be less of a surprise, since conservative Muslims despise dogs as unclean. But the cat ban befuddled many, since Islamic tradition holds that the Prophet Muhammad loved cats — and even let a cat drink from his ablutions water before washing himself for prayers.”
Apparently, even Muhammed wasn’t conservative enough for the jihadis.

Hmmmm ….. the feminists were/are quiet with respect to the treatment of women in muslim land. Now statements of “criminal” homosexuality are met with an “approving” silence. I wonder how far the nutroots will go to stay away from touching this.
darwin on September 13, 2006 at 2:41 PM
I think the reason the Left is silent on the brutality of the Islamofascits is that in their hearts the mooonbats full embrace the multi-culti concept because it gives them a free pass to have their own little cultures and take no flack for it.If they were to come out and say that these actions by the Iranians is wrong and bad they fear that their protection against reality and morality will be sullied and they are loathe to going down that road,so they sit back and allow it to happen out of fear of losing their own little safe niche.

It sounds like the Grammaton Clerics have infiltrated the House of Saud. If they start torching people’s secret caches of kitschy knick-knacks, we’ll have all the proof we need!
Kralizec on September 13, 2006 at 2:57 PM
I’m gonna be charitable here, and assume that we’re talking about the stunned silence of a group of well-meaning folks where were just shocked to find out that what the right has been saying all along is true. They are even as we speak reavaluating long-held beliefs in a spirit of fairness and accuracy.
Hey, it could happen!
Bob's Kid on September 13, 2006 at 3:01 PM
Wow, amazing…
Eastern Europeans I also hear are very macho… Serbs and Croatians, Russians and all… they all apparently beat homosexuals in the streets when they march.
Homosexuals have it good here in the States. Well that might only be because of Compassionate Conservatives.
Did the Taliban Student give a speech at Yale… Did he bash women and say they are no good at the subject of Mathematics?

Wonder if Queers for Palestine were in the crowd
Defector01 on September 13, 2006 at 3:05 PM
Ahhh, an allusion to “Equilibrium”. . . most often used by the left to describe, what they consider, to be the eventual outcome of the “Bush theocracy”. When faced with exactly the sort of behavior they project on the right, their response is silence.
Damning.

If you’re talking about the gay rights movement left wingers you’re wrong. They’re more affraid of losing their ability to make out in public than they are being hanged apparently.
Kinda makes you wonder where their priorities are.
One Angry Christian on September 13, 2006 at 3:20 PM
Now, if they were to play some Red Hot Chili Peppers before the execution, I’m sure the outrage at Harvard would be deafening, rather than silent.

Haven’t you noticed that liberals only protest wishy washy Republicans who make “anti-Gay” statements? They were largely silent on Eddie Murphy, whose
early concerts included some hilarious parodies of homos. Only when they were successfully able to get enough gays working at Paramount were they able to effect his “bottom line” and he recanted. That and his penchant for guys wearing dresses on Santa Monica Blvd at 3am! MIKE TYSON used some of the most egregious, vile and hysterical language to disparage those he thought were gay at press conferences, “Come up here you nasty faggot, I’ll fuck you till you love me!” But like the pantywaists they are, liberals were afraid to take on either Don King (Tyson’s promoter) or Tyson himself because both of them would have told the silly fags to go circle jerk each other. Here they sit trembling in fear, urine staining their underwear, as they sit in front of someone who has actually KILLED SODOMITES! Yeah, I can see them rising in protest now, ROFLMAO.
Allow me to “revise and extend” a previous comment that is so brilliant, it needs to be said again.!
Soothsayer on September 13, 2006 at 3:54 PM
Given the grade inflation at HU, I’m not surprised the morons couldn’t comprehend what was being said. They were all wrapped up in the novelty of seeing one of those colorful third world natives in their own auditorium.

I think that about sums it up.

O.K. Where is Andrew Sullivan? Where is he hiding? What has he to day? Maybe, just maybe he might get a little light shine on the subject of: Islam=dead gays.
sharinlite on September 13, 2006 at 7:32 PM
Wasn’t it nice of the liberals to give Khatami a platform to use in defending the execution of gays? I personally think that there were too many in that crowd worried about losing their heads.

It’s not like he said women weren’t good at math. Now that would have been a firestorm.
Islam loves women that multiply well.

It is probably better for kittens and puppies not to be sold in the kingdom. If a muslim doing ritual cleansing before prayer is touched by dog saliva, he has to start over. A muslim vet complains about people bringing in their dogs before Ramadan for euthanesia to purify the home, including a dog brought in for euthanizing with its legs wrapped in plastic so it would not defile.

So, I guess Rosie is less concerned about Islamonutbags killing gays than conservative christians tut-tutting at them…kinda like abu-ghraib all over again. We put panties on their heads and we’re just as bad as Hussein who put them in paper shredders. That is a good question though..where is Andrew Sullivan? Ah, who cares.
austinnelly on September 13, 2006 at 11:47 PM
Soothsayer, I’ve enjoyed your posts in the last few days.
I’d like Messrs Hitchens and Sullivan to debate the visit and, thus, this topic would be inescapable. Now that would be fun!

Over coffee this morning I mentioned the Harvard ’silence’ to a liberal PHd’d colleague. She said “don’t you think they were polite and silent to grant him the freedom of speech?”
My reply “they already granted that to him by having him there; do you think they would have been polite and silent if Ann Coulter would have said that?” She didn’t answer and just stared at me…
Entelechy on September 14, 2006 at 1:35 PM
This is quite a conundrum for gay liberals. They support every anti-Christian group out there including the jihadists. NOW what are they going to do? They’re not welcome in the islamofascist tent. I guess they’ll have to settle on being verbally challenged by the American evangelicals instead of being butchered by the radical Muslims.
