Video: “Path to 9/11″ (attack edit)
posted at 12:30 pm on September 12, 2006 by Allahpundit
I caught the last 40 minutes and must say I was surprised at how well they handled it. Here’s an eight-minute edit of the attack scenes; the boss says it brought her to the brink of tears. Much of the dialogue, including Betty Ong’s, comes straight from reality, as does the hijackers’ ceremonial garb; this was recovered from the wreckage at Shanksville.
We get only a few impressionistic glimpses of the cabin of Flight 93, an artistic choice I found effective. I remember Shelby Foote in Ken Burns’s Civil War documentary describing Pickett’s charge and how vividly it exists as a proving ground for valor in southerners’ imaginations. Flight 93 fills a similar space now in the American imagination, a fact the film’s elliptical treatment implicitly acknowledges. There are good reasons to dramatize it but also good reasons not to; the technique here trades brutal realism for greater exaltation. Not always the right choice, but not a bad one under the circumstances.
Congrats to ABC on an excellent job and for not backing down in the face of the nutroots’ moronic, bad-faith demands to pull the series. At least one Congressional candidate is trying to have them charged with violating McCain-Feingold for having aired it. He might have a case; lord knows, there are plenty of prominent people violating that particular statute these days.
Update: Here’s how the Truthers commemorated the attacks yesterday at Ground Zero.

Well, Rush confirmed that about 1 minute worth was cut out of the original Path to 9/11 film.

I’m glad they aired it. I almost wish they would be charged with violating McCain-Feingold. They can afford the lawsuit, and it’s time someone with money tested the legality.
High Desert Wanderer on September 12, 2006 at 12:43 PM
Couldn’t mentioning the names McCain and Feingold repeatedly be considered a campaign violation according to their own law?
That would be nice.
Speaking of Rush, he just exposed Steffie Stephanopouloid as as a double-talking fraud. Can we get the clip from last
night and this morning?

My husband has to travel on business a lot. I was literally weeping while watching this clip. I can only hope that if he is ever faced with such a situation he will stand up for his fellow countrymen… God bless all the lost souls on United 93.

Is Clinton running? Berger? Albright? bin Ladin?
What a tool.

Charles W. Sanders definitely lives on another planet. Earth calling Pluto…Did he watch the 2nd half?
The best thing the conservatives can do it to not criticize any part which made them look bad – just let the chips fall where they land. I think the voters know what was depicted, and what reality is. They’re naive but the left thinks they’re down right stupid. Not so!
However, the conservative leadership should look into the threats made to ABC and pursue action/s.

I didnt see this last night. Wow. Thanks for uploading the vid.

I am glad that ABC didn’t cave in to the nuts.

Funny… the inmates at DUmmieland were all shouting and hollaring that the movie on Sunday was a failure because it only got a 8.3 rating against football which was like 13.5. They were calling the movie a miserable failure, yadda yadda…
And yet, Monday’s continuation was the highest rated show on the night and now they’re silent about it. Poor Dummies.

I watched it and apparentely Richard Clarke had final approval since he came off as the only person spanning 2 administrations who was screaming warnings about UBL while nobody else would listen. Who knew Richard Clarke was the only one who knew how serious Al Queda threat was all this time?
/extreme sarcasm
The other thing that I found missing was at no time was there any mention of the work of the Defense Intelligence Agency. It seems they contributed nothing and all the work was done by CIA and FBI.

…waits for our local ‘stict civil libertarian’ to loudly, forcefully, and unequivicolly condemn this proposal by a candidate for a federal government office to violate the free speech rights of ABC.

I saw some Clinton hack in the NY Post claiming he spent Sunday evening watching the Giants-Colts game.
They are so full of it, these people.
Still, I see he sticks it to the taxpayer every chance he gets. What a two-bit fraud.

I think the genius here is President Bush, or his master, Karl Rove, for scheduling his speech right in the middle of the second night, and then to get ABC to agree to break for it. If time was healing any wounds last night’s combo rubbed them raw again.

Watching the images of Father Mychal Judge praying to keep everyone safe, as if there wasn’t enough time to pray for all their souls, was heartbreaking. That’s when I lost it.

CRY! I can’t even bring myself watch the damn thing! But I’ll sure distribute it widely, with the appropriate VOTE DEMOCRATIC tagline.
Dread Pirate Roberts VI on September 12, 2006 at 2:52 PM
How completely narcissistic of the left to be more concerned with how they are protrayed in the movie than to be concerned with the terrorist threat to the U.S.!!!
I cannot imagine what a loser president Al Gore would have made if he were in the same situation. But Carter presidency comes close.

The only thing true about the “Truthers” is that they will go to any length to bring down this administration – its BDS in its advanced stages nearing complete mental breakdown.

that’s one of the most painful things I’ve ever watched.

Didn’t cry; but, went to lay down like a conscious and drugged rhino knowing what was about to happen. My muscles just would not work and my pulse increased watching flt.175 slam into WTC2 above the man’s head.
allie on September 12, 2006 at 4:07 PM
SarahK and I haven’t finished watching it (it’s on our DVR), but I don’t get why so many conservative bashed the concept of this miniseries. Short-attention span Americans like me need shows like this to help put all that history together… and we are smart enough to know that a movie isn’t a documentary.
frankj on September 12, 2006 at 4:42 PM
Tears galore here.
The “Truth”ers all look like as bunch of liberal arts majors, if they went to school at all. (No offense to those that are liberal arts majors or didn’t go to school…) but to make allegations that 9-11 was “engineered” they must have some new information about gravity, the melting(or bending) point of steel, and science in general. I’d LOVE to read their evidence and error-check their calculations, assumptions, coefficients, etc.
WHy the Dems were so outraged is beyond me. All the film really showed is that we’ve let lawyers dictate our wars. One of the terrorists said “if we kill enough Americans, eventually they’ll change their policies” probably referring to our support of Israel.
I agree, but I think it will mean eventually we’ll change our policies of giving the enemies of our country equal rights as civillians.
The outrage and Stalinist tactics of the Left speak VOLUMES about where their priorities lie.
NTWR on September 12, 2006 at 5:25 PM
I didn’t cry, I was too pissed off to shed tears!!
I think the libs are pissed because they know most Americans formulate they opinions based on what they see on TV and this time they saw quite literally the path to 9/11 instead of the nightly doses of liberal MSM bias against the Bush administration.
I hope ABC puts the entire thing on a CD for distribution.
But I do have one criticism, could they have found an older person to cast in the role of Dick Cheney? How old was that guy … 80?
;)
Texas Gal on September 12, 2006 at 5:57 PM
I was glad to see the TV movie expose the FISA court farce of not rejecting requests. What a laugh. I just can’t imagine why warrantless, secret, specific wiretaps would be such a good idea. Oh yeah, because I still HAVE an ass to bend over and kiss good bye if I need to.
Unlike some liberals that have kissed theirs out of fear so much, that they have HICKYS.
Speakup on September 13, 2006 at 1:27 AM
A caller on a talk radio program today made the comment that Al Gore should be glad he didn’t win. It’s obvious that 9/11 would have happened anyway and he would have gotten the blame. The Clinton people would still have needed to blame someone else and he would have been the one since there wouldn’t have been a Republican to blame.
Rose on September 13, 2006 at 1:39 AM
All that pain. Such horror.
Why and how do we have such blindness among us? How can so many not see what we fight???
As long as I live I will never understand it.
Rightwingsparkle on September 13, 2006 at 9:38 AM
Yes, I am happy I decided to watch it. I only decided to when the Clintonistas tried to have it yanked off.
(I thought it might be too painful to watch..still don’t think I’ll be watching “Flight 93″ for a few more years at least.)
After watching it, I also thought I’d love to sign up with the FBI or CIA if I were still single.
I want the DVD, and I want my son to watch it when he is old enough. We may be fighting this war for many years, and his generation unfortunately might have to inherit this war from us. I want him to know who the enemy is before some bedwetting appeasenik “educator” gets a hold of him.
I’ve been sort of in a daze since Monday. I cannot stop thinking of those poor people who lost their lives that day. I have been trying to read as much as I can about how it happened, and reading biographies of our fellow citizens (and foreign friends living here) who died that day.
I have never been the same since that day. And I refuse to let a few nutters shake my resolve. This enemy must be defeated.

docdave on September 13, 2006 at 3:23 PM
Powerful I hope they rerun it when I can see the first half.
The Ambassador to Yemen was so infuriating yet so real to me, an escapee from the bureaucracy. Thinking back to the time of the Cole bombing there was so little feedback. I think in that era Clinton wanted to downplay not only terror attacks, but the suffering of the victims because it woould put him on the spot to do something.
A friend did a contract job for the DEA during Clinton. He said people told him everyone who could retire or get out was doing it. They had made real headway on drugs and it was all being stalled under Clinton. Total demoralization.
