Breaking: Israel will lift blockade of Lebanon tomorrow

Just across on Fox. The only good spin I can put on this is that it’s Olmert’s way of strengthening the hand of Lebanese government, which threatened today to break the blockade if Israel didn’t lift it in 48 hours. “Surrendering” to Siniora in this way increases his prestige in Lebanon so that he can act as a counterweight to Nasrallah.

Of course, it also increases Kofi’s. Charles laughed yesterday, but neither he nor I are laughing now.

Update: The AP says peacekeepers will replace Israeli troops at command positions for Lebanon’s airports and seaports.

Unanswered questions:

Aren’t the Eurabians sending a small fleet to patrol the Lebanese/Syrian coast? Will Israel be handing patrol duty to them or to Lebanoballah (as Hizballah is a party in the coalition, and does roll off the tongue). Lastly, what party is assuming the air patrol from the Israelis?

If Jimmy Carter had ever fought a war, this is how he would have done it.

We have the vaunted “international community” to thank for this turn of events, for pressuring Israel while leaving Iran and Syria entirely in the clear. It looks like Olmert is putting Israel’s defense up to Kerry’s “international test.” I doubt it’ll work out well.
