Whatever. Real outrage requires a fine balance: the earnestness of the author’s belief in his message must at least equal his eagerness to shock and offend. If it doesn’t, if the production’s heavy handed or too nakedly cynical an attempt to cause anger, then it’s hard to take seriously. And if you can’t take it seriously, how upset can you really get?

So here it is, followed by two other videos. One is an old skit from Mr. Show satirizing peformance artists that illustrates my point perfectly. Content warning on that one. Below that is another lefty attempt at outrage, this one more successful than the “America’s Funniest Home Videos” clip. For one thing, it’s clear the turd who put it together (a) actually has a point to make, and (b) takes it very, very seriously. For another, he’s got it synced to “Karma Police.” Doleful dystopian misanthropy, tracked-up to a slideshow about root causes? Irresistible. Hipster pathos so thick you can cut it with a knife.

Look for a lot more of this stuff on YouTube over the next week. They’ve been itching for a new terror attack to blame on Bush, but no dice. With the fifth anniversary approaching, they might as well empty out the inventory.
