Video: Mark Steyn on C-SPAN (Video added)

posted at 11:28 pm on September 1, 2006 by Allahpundit

He was on this morning’s Washington Journal for a full hour chatting with Brian Lamb about politics, jihad, and what it’s like to sit in for Rush Limbaugh.

You’re going here, clicking the link for the 09/01/2006 program, and then fast-forwarding to 59:45. Enjoy.

Update: People are having trouble viewing the video at C-SPAN so I put together five minutes of highlights from the re-run this afternoon. Here he is addressing, in order, Plamegate, Eurabia, and “sensitivity” in wartime.

Thanks for featuring AP. It will take a while to see, as many are probably clamoring for the video…

I’m so happy Mr. Steyn writes/opines in our time. We are the fortunate ones. What brilliance!

Entelechy on September 1, 2006 at 12:28 PM

hmmm, still no video.

Brian on September 1, 2006 at 12:58 PM

I’m having no trouble.

Allahpundit on September 1, 2006 at 1:11 PM

MT on September 1, 2006 at 1:28 PM

My Firefox doesn’t like those vid links.

Hoodlumman on September 1, 2006 at 1:29 PM

…on all of their “recent programs” links actually.

MT on September 1, 2006 at 1:29 PM

Will repeat on C-Span at 4:17p.m. EDT (16:17) under “International Issues“, Washington Journal

Entelechy on September 1, 2006 at 1:37 PM

Well, good for you Allah! (jk)

I’m still getting the page cannot be displaied at this time. o, well.

Maybe IT is watching me today, bunch libs in there. ;-)

Brian on September 1, 2006 at 1:53 PM

that’s displayed – sorry

Brian on September 1, 2006 at 1:54 PM

Is it just me, or does he look like an older (but not balding) Heath Ledger?

Jim Treacher on September 1, 2006 at 1:55 PM

Yup, sure does.

Allahpundit on September 1, 2006 at 1:58 PM

He is haute, and not in the Heath Ledger scruffy, uncleansed way. Mark, I have your jee had right here, baby.

Stormy70 on September 1, 2006 at 2:02 PM

This guy is extremely sharp and in touch with reality. Why cant all Americans understand what he understands? I guess our lives are too easy and we think we can afford to be stupid. Either that, or many Americans really are stupid.

Either way, “stupid Americans” mean trouble for world wise Americans, and I know there are way too many liberal looneys in the U.S. for our own good. I guess we will find out just how stupid the electorate really is in November. I for one fear the worst. I hope I’m wrong.

Shmo on September 1, 2006 at 2:31 PM

I have faith in the American People to see thru this facade the MSM and the libicrats have been feeding them.

A bright and glaring spotlight should be shined on the cockroaches, exposing them for what they are and what they’re truely saying.

I sincerely hope that America, and the world at large, open their eyes and ears and are not persuaded by the lies, distortion, and deflections.

Ever notice what any lib that’s being interviewed on the MSM says the when asked what they’ll do about the War on Islamofascism? The first thing they do is try to insist that Iraq has nothing whatsoever to do with that global war, and that they would never have done what the President did. They’ll then say something about ‘re-deployment’ with no specifics.

They say we’re bogged down in Iraq, even though it’s Iraqis who are steadily standing up and handling the security for themselves. Sure they’ve got a ways to go. So what? They’re moving forward.

They also seem to think that if we can just capture or kill bin laden all terrorist threats will suddenly evaporate. It is a criminally naive and extraordinarily myopic belief.

And what they fail to realize is that we are in an excellent tactical position, as regards iran. Not only that, but Iraq was an excellent training theatre for our troops. We now have hundreds of thousands of troops who are battle tested and hardened in the techniques of the way wars will be waged in the forseeable future.

We’re not in nearly as bad a shape as many would have you believe. Sure, it’s not a cakewalk, but America has not even begun to fight. God help our enemies when we finally decided to take the gloves off. Because I sure won’t.

techno_barbarian on September 1, 2006 at 2:44 PM

Shmo, the American electorate is stupider than it should be but not as stupid and not as suicidal as the wishful MSM and the liberals assume that it is.

This ‘inevitability’ of a Pelosi for leader is crazy and has set into some conservative minds too.

Total nonsense at this time, unless one is weak enough to fall for it, which is precisely what they want.

I totally agree! I can’t understand why otherwise sensible Conservatives are swaying in this particular breeze.

The dems are exceedingly weak, no matter what their trumped up polls seem to show.

I notice that the number of Americans ‘against the war’ gets quoted incrementally higher each passing week. I heard one lib quote that now 63% of Americans believe that.

I think those numbers are completely misleading. I think a lot of Americans are outraged that we’re not fighting this war on islamofascism a hell of a lot more aggressively.

I’m hoping that the dems are in for an eye opening surprise in November and again in 2008.

techno_barbarian on September 1, 2006 at 3:06 PM

He’s on now on C-Span – what an all around great fellow he is – one of the most interesting people in the world today.

Entelechy on September 1, 2006 at 4:21 PM

“the CIA, which spent years subverting governments in Central- and South-America, has spent the last 5 years subverting the U.S. and the Left is going along with it”

“The CIA is a bunch of bureaucrats sitting at Langley, downloading e-mails, not at all James Bond”

“…leaking a name didn’t rise to any level…stupid Libby case, a complete waste of time…”

“…if you go to a dinner party with Hollywood people…committed to all kinds of diversities, except for the only diversity which matter, diversity of opinion…so fragile and delicate that you can’t challenge them without ‘oh, hate crime’…rather make some film where the Jihadist is some Bush-Cheney friend…it’s a closed world (Hollywood)…it’s a bubble”

Dear, dear Mr. Steyn. You want to jump through the tube to kiss him :)

Entelechy on September 1, 2006 at 5:19 PM

It was a great show with excellent and very relevant information. I was very glad to see it.

Steyn is amazing in his clarity and ability to express himself. He needs a much wider exposure and audience.

techno_barbarian on September 1, 2006 at 5:48 PM

Gah!

I can’t see the video, either. Same error as Brian.

You know, I understand the need for copyright protection measures such as streaming video as opposed to providing raw files. I’m not an open source absolutist screaming, “Free all information from their Digital Slavers!” But, if it’s not compatible with every machine then what’s the point?

*sigh* Anybody know of a transcript? Or know when it may repeat on the ‘SPAN?

Kadnine on September 1, 2006 at 6:31 PM

I taped the re-run. I’ll post five of the best minutes later, after I watch.

Allahpundit on September 1, 2006 at 6:33 PM

mines working fine. I’ve noticed that lately conservative commentators are getting more and more covrerage. hoorah for more ballanced coverage.

One Angry Christian on September 1, 2006 at 7:17 PM

FWIW, I can’t watch the video either on IE.

EFG on September 1, 2006 at 10:55 PM

TYVM for adding the video. It will be a chilly day in heck before I download RealMedia again.

Kevin M on September 1, 2006 at 11:51 PM

ps I love Mark Steyn, but did he just say ‘day nu moir’? That’s tantamount to being a person who surrenders alot, eats a bunch of cheese, and resembles chimpanzees.

Kevin M on September 1, 2006 at 11:58 PM

As someone on dial-up, I never get to see the good videos. It takes over an hour to d/l a Vent. I discovered Steyn about a year ago, and have been visiting his site ever since. Radioblogger has always been a great resource-he has transcribed Hugh Hewitt’s radio interviews, including the weekly Mark Steyn sessions. At least I can read what he has to say, which is always sharp and clear.

Doug on September 2, 2006 at 1:35 AM

Mark Steyn is such a great man — got great respect for his views and style.

MoonbatMedia on September 2, 2006 at 3:05 AM

He’s so much hotter than I had expected.

violet on September 2, 2006 at 5:53 AM

Mark Steyn totally pwned the whiner that called up with her pitiful new reason for taking MediaWhoreGate seriously. The rank-and-file on the left are so insipid and lame; watching him destroy that specimen was deeply satisfying.

Kralizec on September 2, 2006 at 7:02 AM

For all those who can’t see the video- get a Mac. Steyn is yet another genius who made himself with a high school education. I would love to know where he got his classical education- likely not an American high school. They re-aired Stossel’s Stupid in America on ABC last night. What timing.

Valiant on September 2, 2006 at 7:23 AM

He says he’s from Canada, and sounds like he’s from England. Either way, I say let’s not give him back :)

Kevin M on September 2, 2006 at 10:33 AM

The best conservative speaker around, bar none.

I’d rather listen to him for 10 seconds than to Ann “Eat a Donut for Heaven’s Sake” Coulter for a year.

Labamigo on September 2, 2006 at 10:35 AM

This guy is great. I have been reading his stuff for 4 years and I have been waiting for his new book for two.

RobCon on September 2, 2006 at 11:32 AM

Mr. Steyn was born in Toronto but grew up in England and other countries. As he explained yesterday he is primarily an autodidact, which means that it doesn’t matter where he has lived or will do so in the future.

I’m very happy that he thinks and writes the way he does and that he loves this country so much so as to live here. Here he is free to be any citizen he chooses to be.

Others, like Mr. Hitchens and Peter Jennings took eternities to become citizens, but in the end they did.

True, true, true!

Thanks for the MC AP!

This guy is extremely sharp and in touch with reality. Why cant all Americans understand what he understands?

What am I? Chop Liver? I’ve been saying the same things he has, and for a considerably longer period of time!

:/

VonHelton on September 2, 2006 at 9:04 PM

Mark Steyn has my vote.

The sooner everyone else sees the world – like Mark – in the black and white instead of shades of reality, the sooner we can come to grips with what must be done to save our civilization.

The call that I reported today (at Traction Control underscores what the future reality may be if we do nothing.

Thanks to Ace for the link.

USCitizen on September 2, 2006 at 10:07 PM

Good post AP. Mark brings up a good point when he mentioned the ‘red-light district’ in Amsterdam and the lifestyles there. I have often wanted to ask liberals exactly who they think will be the first to go if Islamo-fascists win and take over the world. They spend more time smearing the conservatives who are fighting for them to keep their way of life than they spend addressing their most dangerous enemies.

First Amsterdam, then the Royale with Cheese… as I’ve heard him say before (not in this interview): “if we’re not careful, we’re going to lose our world…”

The long link was well worth it. Don’t know if it’s been posted or not, but for anyone who missed Robert Spencer’s Q & A two wks. ago, it’s a must-see:

Mark Steyn nails it column by column, week after week.

This guy gets it as few others do.

What a treasure.

…looking at it in a macro-cynical sort of way…

That’s my new favorite word! But looking at it in a macro-cynical sort of way, how often will I get to use it in a sentence?

Kralizec on September 4, 2006 at 1:09 AM

For those having trouble seeing the video:
1. Javascript needs to be enabled on your browser (at least temporarily);
2. you need to enable something called “real-time streaming protocol” in RealPlayer. This instruction is for RealPlayer 10. You do this by launching RealPlayer 10, clicking on “Tools” (possibly “>>”) -> Preferences -> (select) Media Types -> (click on) Advanced -> scroll down to “Real Time Streaming Protocol” and check the box, then click “OK”.

I know, not exactly trivial.

Check out this link, “Solving Video Problems” at CSPAN for more information (different versions of software, etc) and possibly a better explanation that I provided above:
http://www.c-span.org/watch/help.asp

Thanks very much for the link, AP. Steyn’s great.
