Asharq al-Awsat: Fox’s politics may be to blame for Centanni’s kidnapping

Actually, there are three or four theories as to who might have taken him, but this is the one they lead with:

Despite Wiig’s wife, Anita McNaught, appealing to the kidnappers to release her husband, because “the two men are friends of the Palestinian people”, many Palestinians see Fox News as an extremist rightwing channel that promotes the views of the current US administration, especially during the war in Iraq.

It seems, therefore, that the editorial policy followed by News Corporation-owned broadcaster, is to blame for the kidnapping.

The good news is, I don’t think they’re working off any inside info here. It’s sheer speculation. The bad news is, if they’re right, he’s probably dead.

The boss wants a blogburst but she’s already lapped the field by nailing San Diego Union-Tribune TV critic Bob Laurence on his noxious apologia for media silence on the kidnappings. It’s not a political thing, Laurence implies; it’s a reaction to Fox’s haughtiness, the immensity of which is such as to prevent solidarity with two poor bastards with knives at their throats.

I ran a search on Open Secrets out of curiosity. Surprise. And here’s a column/press release he wrote back in 2004 about “Outfoxed” objecting to Fox’s “us-against-them act, that whole pious, patriotic ‘We’re telling the truth you won’t hear on the liberal media’ routine.” I’d love to know what he thinks of Asharq’s theory; I bet his answer would be loaded with nuance.

Update: I can’t believe I didn’t think of it first.

Update: Amnesty International is calling for their release.

Update: Mike Hendrix ventures where I can only dream of going.

Update: E.M. Zanotti:

Perhaps Bob Laurence missed the memo that went around CNN touting itself as the top in media, or that MTV tagline: the only news you’ll ever use (probably true, if you’re between the ages of 18-30 and spend most of your waking hours stoned). Marketing is an essential part of operating a major media outlet: Roger Ailes saw a market that was becoming increasingly disenfranchised with the offered product, and lo and behold, he used his observation to make money by providing the product they so callously desired. Now, two reporters who’ve been kidnapped by, most likely, murderous thugs, should be made to pay for his capitalistic vision, and CNN’s dismal prime time lineup.

That would be, in the words of the great Spongebob Squarepants, “kind of twisted.”

“many Palestinians see Fox News as an extremist rightwing channel”. Well, well, look who’s calling someone an extremist. Among the blathering gaggle of journalists and other propagandists, FOX is a breath of fresh air and truth.

This very thought has been in the back of my mind since I heard about the kidnappings. We see “Fair and Balanced” (mostly) but people in other parts of the world see “Pro Great Satan”.
I am praying for them and just hope things get resolved. Perhaps that new envoy from NZ will have some affect.

Here is what happens when I try to post this on hannity.com

I’m just about done with my political commentary, because I am SO damn sick of the thin skin out there.

Mortis on August 22, 2006 at 4:14 PM

Mike Hendrix, sitting down or standing, you did a great job! Someone had to finally say it! Wish they could print this in all the papers and show it on all common TV shows.

Entelechy on August 22, 2006 at 4:44 PM

I’m not justifying these lowlifes who’re ignoring it for personal bias reasons, but Fox isn’t talking about it much either.

I haven’t seen it once on the front page of the website, and the last I heard, their instructions were “Do NOT do any other segments on it. Do not book guests on this topic. Do not comment officially and of course, not on the air, about it.” So maybe we’re all shutting the hell up for a reason?

Tanya on August 22, 2006 at 4:45 PM

Fox has aired the video of the family. Brit Hume talked about it too. And if there’s a total media blackout, the word didn’t reach the print folks.

Allahpundit on August 22, 2006 at 4:47 PM

I hate to say this, but he’s already dead. How fo I know? Because no one claimed responsibility, nor were any ransome demands made.

:/

It is not the fault of the terrorists, FOX is to blame!
It is not the fault of Hamas, Israel is to blame!
It is not the fault of the terrorists who hit us on 9/11, it is all Bush’s fault!

I am sick of everyone blaming the poor terrorists, Bin Laden and Islamo Fascists everywhere, it is all America’s fault!

Thank you MSM for your fair and balanced reporting of the news!

Umnumzana on August 22, 2006 at 4:52 PM

Entelechy — I took your contact info down. I don’t want this guy being harassed over this. We’ve had enough headaches with that.

Allahpundit on August 22, 2006 at 4:54 PM

This situation is why the MSM slants their coverage. If they fail to they have to leave the area or risk death. It takes real bravery to stay and report the truth. If only thye rest of our media would grow a pair.

theGimp on August 22, 2006 at 4:57 PM

Ok, I don’t watch tv news. It makes me break things. What would you say the ratio is, compared to, say Danny Pearl (pre-murder)? Or even Jill Caroll? As tv alone goes? And Fox vs Other?

Tanya on August 22, 2006 at 4:58 PM

I’ve seen maybe two mentions of this at Fox and one at CNN. Jill Carroll was mentioned a lot.

If I had to guess what the thinking is here, I’d guess it’s the fact that it was Palestinians who took him, not Iraqis. The Pali jihadis tend not to kill their journo hostages; the Iraqi jihadis do.

But if that’s the logic, after nine days, I’d say it’s just about expired.

Allahpundit on August 22, 2006 at 5:00 PM

BDS knows no bounds. Laurence is a joke.

Rick on August 22, 2006 at 5:14 PM

Well I guess as far as the MSM is concerned it’s probably not much of a big deal & those on the far left are probably rejoicing. I’m beginning to wonder if their fate will ever be known.

Catie96706 on August 22, 2006 at 5:29 PM

You have to be a real bottom-feeder to be outclassed by Amnesty International.

You can’t keep insulting people and then expect friendship when you need it

I thought Centanni was the victim, not Murdoch.

entagor on August 22, 2006 at 6:16 PM

Of course the terrorists recognize Fox employees as spokespeople for the Bush administration, because the democrats have told them so!! Let us all pray that the democrats do not once again have blood on their hands.

gary on August 22, 2006 at 6:52 PM

Many Palestinians see Fox News as an extremist rightwing channel that promotes the views of the current US administration, especially during the war in Iraq.

Gee! I wonder where they got that idea from. At least it shows how the terrorists seen no threat from American Liberal Media Outlets, aka. MSM.

DannoJyd on August 22, 2006 at 8:19 PM

Are the Palestinians EVER responsible for anything their terriorist asses ever do?

“She provoked me into raping her. She wore a tight bright red shirt and short blue skirt. She wore make up. She was dancing. She let me buy her a drink.”

hadsil on August 23, 2006 at 1:12 AM

Bob Laurence sounds like a real piece of work. I think the guy from cold fury said words to the effect that Bob was letting his partisan politics completely trump any feelings he should feel for a fellow American or fellow journalist. What ever it is, Bob seems vile.

The only thing to do is learn from Bob’s noxious example. And don’t do the same thing. When Jill Carol was kidnapped, there was a lot of real slimey comments made about her on our side. We can argue about whether our side had the same amount of crappy behaviour, or less than the left. We can argue that it was only our fringe that behaves this way, where-as the spokespeople from the left behave this way.

Whatever. That is missing the point, in my opinion. I think that we need to police our selves as much as possible so we don’t explode into noteriety like Bob. Unfortunately, this kiddnapping is going to happen again. Some journalist is going to end up kiddnapped by Islamic-fascists. And with the majority of journalists being liberal, it most likely will be some liberal journalist who is kiddnapped. When this happens, (God forbid), let’s make sure we comport ourselves with better humanity than Bob did.
