Video: Comedy Central roast of William Shatner

posted at 4:14 pm on August 21, 2006 by Allahpundit

Ace thought it was lame, but there were enough good lines in that hour-forty-five for a solid eight-minute clip.

The roasters, in order, are Greg Giraldo, Betty White, Jeff Ross, Artie Lange, Andy Dick, Patton Oswalt, George Takei, Lisa Lampanelli, and finally the Captain himself. You should know that Takei and Dick are gay or else you won’t understand about 98% of the jokes.

It re-airs Tuesday, Aug. 22nd and Saturday, Aug. 26th at midnight; Sunday, Aug. 27th at 11:30 p.m.; and Monday, Sept. 4th at 10 p.m.

I saw the entire thing. It was not as good as the Old Dean Martin roasts.
Betty White said it best “Its nice to see the kids out and making potty humor”
(paraphrased due to bad memory)

Most of the jokes were either rascist (Lampinelli’s promiscouity with black men) or Gay.
Very little class or good natured ribbing. More like a grade school slap fight.
Takai was pretty funny though, and I am still chucklin over Nichols “Kiss my black ass” comment.

I watched the roast, and frankly, if george Takei hand’t been the butt (sorry… -b.) of homo jokes, there wouldn’t have been any attempts at humor at all.

I am far more interested in tonight’s Travel Channel- Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations episode where they were taping in Beirut when the ‘fun’ began a month and a half ago.

I am quite disappointed by the Comedy Central roasts. Their humor is the worst sort of [Bush word], the nasty commedians who must go as foul as is humanly possible drag down those who have real talent, and that roast proved that Class is something only found inside of California schools.

Betty White was a shining example of how to get nasty without taking a trip to the septic tank, Farrah Fawcett was proof that there remains a few with good taste, but no comedic talent [Allah didn't deem to include her in the list of roasters], and whoever was responsible for shoving the singing of William Shatner down our throats for soooo loooong should be hurt as that was, IMHO, a definite example of torturing innocents.

If you feel no need to visit homosexual porn sites on the net then stay far away from the Shatner Roast.

That was so funny. Definitely not work friendly! Loved the Margaret Cho dig.

Andy Dick is only half right. He’s the most unfunny person on the planet

JasonG on August 21, 2006 at 5:35 PM

Gotta love Shatner. I hope he gets one last cameo in Trek XI. He’s a great guy, and he’s been through a lot. Free Enterprise was good times.

If these guys had been Republicans, the outrage would have not ceased in the Old Media once the credits rolled. Okay, there were some golden moments, but we had to wade through some serious sewage to get to them.

:le sigh:

Andy Dick is gay? No way! Who knew?

A roast of William Shatner…it could have been great and was instead merely okay.

And why was Farah Fawcett there? What’s the connection with Shatner? Her plastic surgery prevents here from smiling properly and her time at the mic was atrocious.

Best line of the night: “Betty White is so old that on her first game show the grand prize was fire” (the dig on Garafalo might have tied it)
Honorable mention to Shatner saying Star Trek broke barriers: “We let an Asian man drive”

Enjoyed it!

I have to admit I shut it off after about 1 minute.

“Masturbating to Betty White”…?

Some part of me just wanted to kick the crap out of that guy after he said that. Just pissed me off too much to watch the rest.

They just don’t get it.

Swearing, off color ad hominem attack, belittling of minorities etc. is not funny in and of itself.

See, when Richard Pryor did it, it was funny because Pryor knew the fundamentals of the craft of the comedian. First and foremost being timing, but also the knowledge of something subtle in the use of bad language. Richard learned that from Lenny Bruce.

These people learned nothing from either, except that the potty mouth gets the middle school laff and snicker.

“Why if I was 20 years younger, I’d take a flamethrower to this place!”

Where’s Al Pacino’s character when we need him?

The double standard of the post-modern liberal never ceases to amaze.

Yeah, if Sulu wasn’t there, they’d have been pressed for material. I was really looking forward to watching this but, after seeing it, was very disappointed. Shatner was more correct than he knew at the end when he said “they just weren’t funny.” They weren’t.

Although, Jeffrey Ross was ok and Lisa (whatever her last name is) did have a few good jokes in there.

I miss the old roasts, the ones that Dean Martin used to do. They were edgy for their time. Compared to what we see now, the old shows are like watching Sesame Street or something.

Ah, the old days….where you could be funny without resorting to racist jokes or vulgar comments.

I do agree with Wicks….if these were conservative comedians, there would have been a MAJOR uproar about this from the left.

Iowa Voice on August 22, 2006 at 9:35 AM

This comedy seems to be oriented to the homosexual and to me seems in poor taste. I find vulgarity distasteful – comedy to me is about humor and wit – not crude degredation and bashing.

If a true comedian has wit that is as sharp and quick as a rapier these people seem like crude, drunks with a blunt cutlass – or a club.

omegaram on August 22, 2006 at 11:37 AM

I like Shatner & I like Trek, but this was in bad taste. There were a few funny lines, but I had to wade through so much garbage to get to them, it didn’t seem worth it.

:/

VonHelton on August 22, 2006 at 12:09 PM

Not funny for the msot part. A few good line, yes. But, over all, the last good Roast series was hosted by Dean Martin!

Still, I LOVE the Shatman. He is simply hilarious.

Thanks for the heavy editing. It would have pained me to sit through what was obviously a dreadful presentation. I tell you, I couldn’t have sat on a dais and been worked over like that.

thegreatbeast on August 22, 2006 at 3:51 PM

Both painful and hilarious to watch.
