Friday dumb links: Nickelback plagiarizes itself

Nothing’s going on in the news except JonBenet and Snakes on a Plane, so enjoy this audio confirmation of something you already knew. Stay with it for at least 30 seconds, to the point where it “kicks in.” Hilarious.

If you don’t know who or what Nickelback is, consider yourself lucky.

This is even better than the recent RHCP/Tom Petty scandal!

I weep for the music of this generation….

World B. Free on August 18, 2006 at 3:01 PM

That is sooooo funny!

kimsch on August 18, 2006 at 3:03 PM

Don’t weep for the music of this generation. Weep for the generation itself. Crap bands wouldn’t put out endless, crappy supplies of crap music if crap fans would stop buying crap.

Crappin’ crapheads…

Hoodlumman on August 18, 2006 at 3:07 PM

Ha!
That’s all I’ve to say, or I plagiarize myself.

Catnip on August 18, 2006 at 3:09 PM

Headbanging fun.

Without the headbanging.

Or fun.

Slublog on August 18, 2006 at 3:15 PM

I consider myself lucky :)

That picture of Saddam amuses me (he looks like Karl Marx) but the caption on top is even better “Michael Moore Tells the Truth” Ha!!!!

Entelechy on August 18, 2006 at 3:15 PM

Fuggin’ hysterical. Worth nuthin’ more’n a plugged nickel.

nukemhill on August 18, 2006 at 3:24 PM

How can it be plagiarism it Kroeger wrote both songs? He can be accused of sloth, at best.

Kid from Brooklyn on August 18, 2006 at 3:29 PM

Correction: that second “it” should read “if”. Thanks.

Kid from Brooklyn on August 18, 2006 at 3:30 PM

ok. i’m ready for the onslaught…I…like…nickelback…

should i have just admitted that? :)

pullingmyhairout on August 18, 2006 at 3:33 PM

Alllllrighty then…

1) As a guitar player of 19 years, I feel justified in my (now more validated) stance that Nickelback is a lame joke of a band…nothing more than a product

2) At one of my band’s rehearsal studios, another band occupying space in our building, put up a poster advertising an upcoming gig. Under their name they wrote in bold print, “CLOSELY MONITORED BY CHAD KROEGER OF NICKELBACK.” Needless to say we did 2 things – fell on the floor laughing and wrote “NOT monitored by Chad Kroeger of Nickelback” I mean, come on, it’s Kenny G’s brother with a Paul Reed Smith.

3) One of the best viral videos ever to grace the interior of my email inbox was a video of Nickelback “in concert” in some South American country. They were being booed off the stage when the afforementioned Chad Kroeger stopped the song mid-chorus and said, “Are there any Nickelback fans in Argentina?! (or some other country)” Right then a bottle flew from the crowd and hit him squarely on his overly-sized nasal appendage. Justice….South American style.

“Blame Canadaaaaaaaa”

BirdEye on August 18, 2006 at 3:37 PM

I like the combined version better than either one alone. Now do the same thing with some Tragically Hip or U2 songs and we can really save some time.

Brian C on August 18, 2006 at 3:45 PM

I don’t get it :(. I’ve heard that song ‘this is how you remind me’, and this kind of sounds like the same song. Is that the whole joke or did I miss it?

Kevin M on August 18, 2006 at 3:46 PM

pullingmyhairout,

I’ll go you one better. I like Kenny G.

mikeyboss on August 18, 2006 at 3:51 PM

Mikeyboss, i can beat that – I like John Denver. God rest his soul.

pullingmyhairout on August 18, 2006 at 3:57 PM

and…ABBA

pullingmyhairout on August 18, 2006 at 3:57 PM

oh goodness, it’s getting baaaaaaad.

pullingmyhairout on August 18, 2006 at 3:58 PM

Well, John Denver, like JFK Jr., was a plane down to earth kind of guy.

mikeyboss on August 18, 2006 at 4:18 PM

I’m one of the lucky ones who can’t recall ever hearing of them before. I take it Mr. Chad has had some rather strong things to say on plagarism.

But I have to say that if you’re listening through headphones the overlaid song pair is kind of good. I don’t think it holds up without headphones to separate the vocal tracts out, but with them…

KCSteve on August 18, 2006 at 4:20 PM

Excellent!

There’s a Radiohead trick too, but they did it on purpose. Play some of the songs from Kid A 17 seconds apart. It’s supposed to work for the whole album, but I thought it only sounded right with Morning Bell.

JamesVersusEveryone on August 18, 2006 at 4:23 PM

I didn’t know they actually claimed to have released another song. I thought they’ve always just had the one. Which was an okay song the first million times…

Pablo on August 18, 2006 at 4:44 PM

Go get yourself some Nickel Creek instead, Allah.

Anwyn on August 18, 2006 at 5:11 PM

Go get yourself some Nickel Creek instead, Allah.

Just a totally unrelated note. I was working at a club in Nashville about 5 years ago, and after a Nickel Creek (and others) concert some people streamed in to downtown to head out to the bars. Some already loaded. At my club I talked to the “leader” of this one small group of women who had been at the concert… she was too drunk to say “Nickel Creek” and repeatedly called them “Cripple Creep”.

Carry on…

RightWinged on August 18, 2006 at 5:39 PM

pullingmyhairout and mikeyboss, music aside, John Denver and JFK Jr. might have been “two plain down to earth guys” but they were both baaaad pilots.

Entelechy on August 18, 2006 at 5:39 PM

RightWinged, that’s funny, “Cripple Creek” being an actual song, it’s even funnier that she couldn’t even get “Creek” right. :)

Anwyn on August 18, 2006 at 6:27 PM

Entelechy, er, mikeboss “plane” down to earth … morbid joke.

And anybody who thinks liking John Denver is worse than liking Kenny G needs a reality check. :)

Anwyn on August 18, 2006 at 6:30 PM

Er … should be “mikeyboss said ‘plane’ …”

Anwyn on August 18, 2006 at 6:30 PM

ABBA, yes. Denver, occasionally. Kenny G… no.

RD on August 18, 2006 at 6:41 PM

Anwyn, thank you sooooo much. I get it now!!!

Oh, mikeyboss, am I sincerely sorry!!! That was incredibly clever of you. As a ‘d–n’ foreigner who’s naturalized, I adore such…and still don’t always get them, even though I attempt to create them :(

ABBA, yes – my favorite song is “The day before you came”.

Entelechy on August 18, 2006 at 10:16 PM

Hah! I couldn’t understand what the heck was so funny about that song and was feeling pretty dumb. Then I noticed that my right speaker was turned off :)

Kevin M on August 18, 2006 at 11:18 PM

Entelechy,

I think this is the first time I have the opportunity to use this:

“No pun intended.”

“None taken.”

mikeyboss on August 18, 2006 at 11:58 PM

I guess if I didn’t listen to talk radio all the time, I’d have gotten the fact that that was two separate songs. I know when I write, I tend to use phrases over and over again without realizing it…but a whole essay? Never.

ABBA, yes!
Denver, sometimes, if I hafta.
Kenny G, not a chance in Hades.

And groooooooooan to the “plane down to earth guys” comment. Clever, yet so satisfyingly morbid.

tickleddragon on August 19, 2006 at 1:36 AM

Damn, that was bad.
In a motherf***ing sort of way!

batperez on August 19, 2006 at 2:20 AM

I mean the song!!!

batperez on August 19, 2006 at 2:20 AM

Wow. I mean, I joked about that, but… wow.

Radio DJ: And now, a brand new track from Nickleback!
[song starts]
Girlfriend: This isn’t new! This is the same stupid song I’ve been turning off daily for the past year!

Mark Jaquith on August 19, 2006 at 3:33 AM

ABBA, yes – my favorite song is “The day before you came”.

Mine – Knowing Me Knowing You

John Denver – Goodbye Again

Kenny G – can’t name a song I like, thank God.

** what’s on YOUR ipod ** ??? :)

pullingmyhairout on August 19, 2006 at 10:54 AM

ABBA–Dancing Queen

John Denver–Wild Montana Skies

Kenny G–not before I’m dead.

Anwyn on August 19, 2006 at 1:21 PM

Kind of like musical masturbation, don’t you think?
