[...] Ceasefires don’t create peace, wars do. After all, the Middle East has seen more ceasefires and more violence than any region over the last couple decades. And what do we have to show for it? A few of us are wise enough to realize this is just another “peace in our time” Chaimberlain-style appeasement pact which at best delays the inevitable. [...]

Meanwhile, Iran is supplying (via H) the money to rebuild Lebanon. The smart move for us would be to pressure our friends (and I use the word hesitantly)in the Arab world, e.g. the Saudis to take up this cause with us leading it. We don't seem to grasp the importance of propaganda. You're a Lebanese citizen whose home and town has been damaged; who comes to help you? Hezbollah/Iran. How does this affect your POV? Guess.

Bryan wrote:

The Syrians and Iranians think they have hit upon a strategy to destroy Israel: Attack it with standoff weapons like Katyushas, goading it into fighting a ground war that frightens the world into halting Israel’s defensive actions. The end game is that Israel can’t defend its borders, it becomes demoralized and then the Arabs and Iranians move in for the kill. In response to the standoff attacks, Israel has the choice of non-response, weak response or brutal response–there’s no way to uproot an entrenched army of any size without using some very nasty tactics and weapons. I’m not talking nukes or anything like that–just weapons that make for bad TV.

I disagree somewhat.

Oh, I agree that Syria, Iran, Hezbollah will try again, and will probably use the formula you proffer.

However, I'm not sure that Isreal is in the box you claim it is now in.

Frankly, I expect Olmert's government to fall, and with it, their party's unilatteral "land for peace" policy; and while I'm not an expert, I have no doubt that the next government will be much tougher and less hesitant.

Olmert is no Sharon, we can all agree on this. I'm not sure that Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah would have tried it had Sharon not suffered that stroke.

I have no doubt that the "lessons learned" meetings are already underway and that Israel will find or invent a solution to change the outcome the nextime around. The IDF is justifiably regarded as extremely competent.

Israel should fortify the Golan Heights as the Islamofacist did in Southern Lebanon. Israel should give them a good taste of what resistance is really about.

When the next war comes perhaps it will widen into Syria and give Israel reason to put Iran and it's little dog (Syria) into the stone age.

It think some people are right, we are witnessing the beginning of WWIII in slow motion.

And it bought more time for the enemy to reload. Interesting that the cease fire coincided with a decline in Sharon's health, he must sense how bad it is.

Hmmm.... wonder what would happen if we moved one of the US Army Heavy Divisions home base from Germany, to Israel?

Germany no longer needs em, but it sure would make a statement to the Arab world about our commitment to Israel...
