More of the same ol’ same old from the “reality-based” community: resort to fantasy as a way to avoid having to cope with the big, bad world out there.

Being a liberal these days increasingly resembles a form of senility: like a very old relative of mine, who when asked where his sister was insisted that she was “In the kitchen.” When it was gently pointed out to him that she wasn’t there, he testily replied, “I prefer to believe that she is in the kitchen.”

Similarly, libs increasingly want to exist in a world that conforms to the way the wish things were, instead of the way things are. The “alternative history” writers for the New York Magazine are a perfect example of this trait, as were those donk clowns in the House of Representatives who held mock impeachment hearings of President Bush but who also made sure to adjourn the festivities in time to make it home in time to catch “The West Wing” on TV.

God help us all if they ever get their hands on power here in the real world.

1) These people must have a LOT of time on their hands.
2) Remember what Kerry said in one of the debates (and was roundly ridiculed for by the right..): the war on terror will be won through better intelligence, international cooperation on intelligence and old fashioned police work. Kinda wraps up the London airliner plot, doesn’t it?

It’s remarks like this that make me completely disgusted that Log Cabin (Apologist) Republicans gave him an award this year. Sullivan used to be one of my heroes in the early’90’s. he made me feel good about being gay and Republican. Now he turns my stomach. (LCR is incidentally looking for a new Executive Director this year. I wonder if they’ll try something new and hire a real Republican.)

Yah, it’s interesting: except for three or four–Sullivan, Wieseltier, Zakaria the real estate guys, and I guess Ron Suskind–everyone interpreted the question as “What if there were no Muslim issue?” Without 9/11 or any comparable attacks, the Muslims would have just conquered Europe more stealthily.

I actually don’t find Levy’s passage as odious as you do. There’s more than a whiff of parody about it, and the way it ends really encapsulates the whole escapist fantasy garbage that permeates this whole exercise. Look at it this way: at least he only blathered on for a few paragraphs, as opposed to Sullivan’s endless, golden fantasy that was not only utterly twee (it’s all through a glass, darkly, brethren and sistren) but which also threatened to be an alternate history both longer and more boring than “Bring the Jubilee.”
