I wasn’t planning to open this thread for another three hours but Karol sent me something so sweet, I had to share before we got scooped.
Consider this an open thread for all things related to Liebs and the Freshmaker or Hank Johnson and Jihad Cindy. Exit polls and results will be posted here later too. And we’re still accepting predictions. But in the meantime, enjoy politics the way it ought to be. I’d like to tell you that the fat guy with the chair-throwing problem is the Democrat and the mafioso type is the Republican.
I’d like to. But I can’t.

Update: Faced with the prospect of an ascendant nutroots, Rick Moran escapes into fantasy.
Update: “That’s right, and I’ll touch you again, if you do it again.” Mitigating factor: it wasn’t a cop this time.
Update: We have our first Kos TV appearance of the night, courtesy of — who else? — Keith Olbermann. Kos bete noire Dean Barnett reports.
Update: First returns in Connecticut:
U.S. Senator
Candidate Party Votes
Joseph Lieberman Dem 1,188
Ned Lamont Dem 1,747
And in Georgia, with 8% reporting:
Candidate Votes Vote %
Hank Johnson 1514 74%
Cynthia McKinney (I) 537 26%
Update: Connecticut 8:36 p.m.:
Joseph Lieberman Dem 4,586
Ned Lamont Dem 6,814
Update: 8:51. I’m officially nervous:
Ned Lamont 12,236 56%
Joe Lieberman 9,535 44%
Update: 8:53. CT site used to post election results is down.
Update (Ian): 8:58. GA results still sluggish:
Hank Johnson 2126 74%
Cynthia McKinney 745 26%
Update: 9:03. 17% in. Can no one hear my cries?
Ned Lamont 29,463 56%
Joe Lieberman 22,898 44%
Carl Cameron on Fox says they might call it for the Freshmaker soon.
Update: 9:13 p.m. A full 25% reporting.
Ned Lamont 40,044 55%
Joe Lieberman 32,575 45%
Update: 9:32 p.m. 38% in.
Ned Lamont 61,449 54%
Joe Lieberman 53,159 46%
Update (Ian): 9:33. Chris Matthews called Lamont very “calm”, “casual”, and not “that bad”. On the other hand, Lieberman is a “schmaltzy ethnic guy”. Geez, Chris, could you make it any clearer?
Update: Is Liebs closing the gap?? 9:37 p.m., 50% in:
Ned Lamont 69,466 52%
Joe Lieberman 64,056 48%
Update (Ian): 9:40 p.m., 16% in, a boost for McKinney:
Hank Johnson 3384 64%
Cynthia McKinney 1876 36%
Update (Ian): 9:43 p.m., AP reports Lamont leads Lieberman 52% to 48% with 55% reporting.
Update: 64% in, and Joe’s closing the gap!
Lamont, Ned 89,814 51.60%
Lieberman, Joe (i) 84,231 48.40%
Update: Drudge has the siren up and says “Lieberman on the brink.” He’s only 3% down, but he’s running out of precincts. The bright side is, this pretty much ensures an independent run.
That’s not the only bright side. 35% reporting in Georgia:
Hank Johnson 11255 61%
Cynthia McKinney (I) 7062 39%
Update: Drudge has the “Winner” asterisk up next to Lamont’s name.
Update: 84% reporting. Just as I predicted:
Ned Lamont 120,616 52%
Joe Lieberman 111,887 48%
Update: 52% reporting in Georgia and Hank’s still hammering McK:
Hank Johnson 17907 58%
Cynthia McKinney (I) 12934 42%
Update: 68% reporting in Georgia and Johnson’s margin is holding. 87% reporting in Connecticut and so is Ned Lamont’s.
Update: Lieberman called Lamont to concede the election. He’s speaking now. We’ll have video soon.
Update: NBC in Atlanta calls it for Hank Johnson.
Update: Here’s video of Hank Johnson’s victory speech. It worked fine for me in IE but not Firefox. It’ll be a little bit before we have video of Lieberman’s non-concession, but stick around. It’s worth it.
I’ll have video of the Freshmaker in ten minutes or so.
Update: Final margin — Lamont, 52-48. Allah’s prediction ten hours ago — Lamont, 52-48.
That’s how the pros do it, baby.
Update: I knew someone was going to write a post like this. Heh.
Update: Here’s the empty suit who just won the Connecticut primary delivering what must be the first victory speech in history to begin with a call for retreat. Repulsive.
Goldstein thinks he saw a familiar face in the crowd.
Update: No video of the McKinney concession yet, but it sounds like it was a barnburner:
In a bizarre end to her reelection campaign, Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney gathered her supporters around her and attempted to sing along to a song by Pink and the Indigo Girls called “Dear Mr. President.”
“Let me tell you about hard work, minimum wage with a baby on the way,” McKinney sang out as the song played in the background. Eventually, McKinney conceded the race at 12:36 a.m. with one sentence: “I wish the new representative of the 4th Congressional District well.”
Update (Ian): 8/9 1:47 a.m.: Lieberman concession speech:
Update (Ian): 8/9 3:17 a.m.: McKinney implies the race was stolen in her concession speech. Mind you, she lost by 16%, 5,000 votes, with very low turnout.

I mean, isn’t that kinda like rubbing salt in the wound?

This isn’t too surprising - it’s never too early to start making a case for being diebold’d
Less than an hour into voting, McKinney name is not on the ballot–opponent’s is
8:14 AM
Less than one hour into the voting day, multiple problems with the electronic voting machines have arisen. McKinney precinct watchers are reporting machines down already, insecure machines, and at least one 4th Congressional District precinct without McKinney’s name on the ballot, but with her opponent’s name on it.
Midway Elementary School, at 7:20 am, voter came into vote and went thru the check in procedure, she put the card in the machine and went to the poll manager; the poll manager did not address the issue. The voter left in disgust. The McKinney campaign has the voter’s name. And an eyewitness report, too.
At Hooper Alexander, one machine not operational. Another location had to redo the zero report because the machine did not initiate at a zero count. And at yet another location, the voting machine where the voting card is inserted is not secure.

If Lieberman loses tonight to the cheering of the Leftists but then runs and wins as an independent in November, this is what is now known as Freudenschade. Freudenschade is defined as premature gloating by Leftists only to be defeated in the long run.
Freudenschade, baby!

What seems like a thousand years ago I was stationed at MacDill with Central Command and if I remember correctly Joe Rednar owned all these strip clubs. If this is the same guy (which I think it is) he’s been running for something every couple of years.

pjcomix, the comments on your blog are superb!
In your Lieberman/Lamont scenario it’s still Schadenfreude all around - it will just jump from Left to Right.
There is something strange that those of our political persuasion are rooting for someone who 90% of the time votes against us - just shows what a decent man Mr. Joe is.
Entelechy on August 8, 2006 at 7:39 PM
It has all been said already.
I look foreward to seeing the returns as I believe/hope/demand that Joe will win.

She refused to talk to the media today instead she insisted on chanting slogans and her staff was making accusations that there were voting problems. The DeKalb Election Commission reports they had NO problems today.
labwrs on August 8, 2006 at 8:18 PM
Between that, and assaulting journalists, McKinney’s staff had a full plate today. The asswhuppin’ is down to 74-26, and Freshmaker is up 56-43 with 13 of 167 reporting per Drudge.
Kid from Brooklyn on August 8, 2006 at 8:46 PM
The story behind Freudenschade is that some DUmmie was gloating over Karl Rove being “indicted” by Patrick Fitzgerald. He declared “Freudenschade, baby!” when he meant to say “Schadenfreude, baby!” I picked up on that and went with his error and defined it to mean premature gloating over an event that does NOT happen. Perfect example of Freudenschade is when all the liberals were celebrating Kerry’s “victory” in November 2004 when the exit polls showed him winning by a landslide.
When the REAL results came in causing the same celebrating folks to go into a deep depression, that was…Freudenschade, baby!”
The DUmmies inadvertently gave birth to a new word.

Freudenschade comes off like when Elizabeth Berkeley mangled “Versace” in Showgirls.

PJcomix, I anticipate a delightful bit of comedy for tomorrow. If the trends I’ve seen so far keep apace… Joe picking up 1% about every 10-15% of the vote… then we will get the edge-out for Liebs just as we get to the end of the counting. And you will have another wonderful DU thread bemoaning the results to make fun of.

RH, they are still trying to stuff the electronic ballots for Cynthia *lol*
labwrs on August 8, 2006 at 9:38 PM
No kidding, labwrs, they just might have. Six more districts — around 4% — and she jumps TWELVE percentage points? That’s gotta be the biggest jump I’ve ever seen.
Then again, her numbers were so awful it’s not like she had anywhere else TO go except up.
RH
RobertHuntingdon on August 8, 2006 at 9:43 PM
The early reporting was most likely from the counties that arent going for her..her “usual base” is always the last to report. Dont be a bit surprised if she keeps jumping..it is entirely possible she will be reelected. Nothing would surprise me about that District! (I know, used to live in it!)
labwrs on August 8, 2006 at 9:45 PM
Hmm did I goof on the math? I thought with 21 precincts in “race card cindy” had twenty-FOUR percent… but the previous 20 precincts had her at 26%. So now I’m not sure. I’m not exactly keeping screenshots of these things… :)
Bui either way, 10% or 12%, that’s still quite a jump.
RH
RobertHuntingdon on August 8, 2006 at 9:46 PM
Wow, is district 4 just that messed up? She jumps up at least 10, maybe 12, now drops 6… weird stuff.

RobertHuntingdon on August 8, 2006 at 9:54 PM
Freshmaker up 52-48 with 69% in as of 9:53.
Hmmmmmmm….. what do I want more; the Kossacks (playing the MsM proxy) going 0-21, or Liebs crushing them in November? Too close to call.
Kid from Brooklyn on August 8, 2006 at 9:55 PM
No one, and I mean, no one, should be surprised if this meathead Lamont upsets Lieberman. Connecticut is as bad as Massachusetts when it comes to politics, if not worse.
A primer for those who may be unaware of what happened the last time the Nutroot state booted one of its U.S. Senators out of office:
Our story begins around 1990, when Lieberman, then state attorney general for Connecticut, unseated a powerful GOP incumbent named Lowell Weicker, who had served as one of Connecticut’s two U.S. Senators for 3 to 4 terms, I believe. Weicker, a pompous, white-haired Patrician Republican was an heir to the Vicks medicine fortune, and managed to hold onto his senate perch by consistently siding with liberals on vote after vote, year after year.
Nutmeggers, in their infinite wisdom, decided they felt bad for corpulent windbag Weicker. Sensing the Nutmeggers’ sympathy, Weicker immediately formed a third party in Connecticut, and ran for governor. Lo and behold, Lowell was elected Governor following his humiliating ouster from the U.S. Senate.
Now, this is all taking in place amid a bruising recession following the S&L scandal. Connecticut is bleeding from job losses, plant closings, loan defaults and foreclosures the likes of which probably hadn’t been seen since the Great Depression. But Lowell Weicker has a magic potion: The state’s first-ever income tax. Yes. A the institution of an income tax in the middle of a recession. It was brilliant, and soon, the exodus of affluent residents began in earnest.
Yes, papa Lowell was a one-term governor, and the backsides of all Connecticut residents are still aching from the reaming Weicker gave them. The income tax never sunsetted, as the little elves in the magical kingdom originally promised. In fact, the tax has gotten more acute.
Well, as in all fairy tales, I must tell you that this story has a happy ending that really brings itself full circle. For you see, one of Ned Lamont’s backers is none other than - you guessed it - Papa Lowell. He’s back to exact more revenge on the state that treated him so poorly when its citizens took the silver spoon of the U.S. senate from his blue-blood lips back around 1990. And now, he’s passing the spoon onto a fellow blue-blooder in Lamont, who no doubt will find comfort as he sits in the parlor rooms of Washington with other civil-rights Democrats, like Robery Byrd.
deanyc on August 8, 2006 at 9:57 PM
Yes, Dist 4 is THAT messed up! I fully expect her to be on air on 10pm news complaining (as she has done before!) the voting machines were rigged. When Majette beat her she commandeered a voting precinct with her MOB (I mean campaign supporters), frightening the poll workers and intimidating them into keeping that voting station OPEN! She will do and say anything! My only real question tonite: WHO will be her dancing partners? Will Sheehan and CodePink show up OR do they know a LOSER when they see it and if she isnt a Congresswoman she isnt anything to them?
labwrs on August 8, 2006 at 9:59 PM

Half of me is suprised (whether I am or not) and half of me isn’t with the election results as reported by Drudge today (incase in the future someone reads this, the report is archived here).
I think it’s a loss because, while political bigotry from the Democrats are exposed here, how many will recognize the results as what I suspect it as being? Perhaps not many, and I’m sure half of America (whom voted for Kerry) is celebrating. I don’t believe it is a win-win situation for those for the War on Terror, and the race between Lieberman and Lamont was all about it, more specifically the conflict in Iraq (I don’t call it the “War in Iraq” because it’s a part of the War on Islamic Terrorism/War on Terror).
But that’s how I feel.

Technical problems in DeKalb County are delaying the vote count there, including vote count reports in the U.S. House District 4 race between incumbent Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney and Hank Johnson.
Poll workers were having difficulty uploading memory cards from electronic voting machines, said Chris Riggall, a spokesman for the Georgia Secretary of State’s office.
It is not known how long it will take to get vote totals from DeKalb County.

DannoJyd on August 8, 2006 at 10:38 PM
pjcomix, please consider pushing this on your site, because it would be accurate…
Schaden = misfortune/detriment.
Freude = joy/delight.
Schadenfreude = malicious joy in the misfortunes/detriment of others.
The author of this site http://junkyardblog.transfinitum.net/ has invented a derivative: Verrücktenfreude. I believe Narrenfreude could have the same effect.
Verrückte/Narren = the insane/fools
Verrücktenfreude/Narrenfreude = malicious joy in the insanity of others
Let’s right now coin a new word for this group: DUmmiefreude = malicious joy in the insanity of DUmmies.
Now, that even J. W. von Goethe would approve of!
Entelechy on August 8, 2006 at 10:41 PM

Hey, with Lamont’s apparent victory in CT and the possibility of Lieberman running as an independent in the fall, there is a strong chance that they could both lose the actual senatorial election in November.
Karl Rove is a freakin’ genius. Mwuhahahaha!
The real drawback here is that the kooky Left has gotten the carrot instead of the stick — now they have earned some cred as real powerbrokers even if that means tearing the Democratic party to shreds.

labwrs on August 8, 2006 at 10:49 PM
Speed,
Actually, a lot worse would’ve happened, but that’s how I feel. Ranging from more Liberals on the Supreme Court to even bigger government to atrocities in Iraq after pulling out, etc. Again, that’s how I feel.
And coming back from the evil twin universe from Star Trek, if McKinney wins, I’m pretty sure it’ll be an insult to injury. One more Anti-War candidate and someone who continues to get away with whatever she wants and keep her seat. I’d rather hear her screaming and shouting and saying her defeat was because she was female and black, the same reason why she punched that police officer back at the end of March.
But I hope Hank wins so we can get some damage control going. I don’t know much about him although he seems less off-the-hook than other people at the heart of the Democratic party who runs the place with an iron fist dictating that Democrats be lock-step with each other.
I’m just dissapointed that Democrats are engaging in political bigotry. It’s as if anything with an R (for Republican) is to be condemned and anyone on their side who doesn’t condemn anything with an R on it might as well have an R rather than a D.
*sigh*

Entelechy, not a problem. I’m nervous right now, and enjoyed racking my brain on another problem, such as it was.
ChickenKosfreude. Time to get that installed at Wikipedia.
DannoJyd on August 8, 2006 at 10:59 PM
The local Fox station also just reported Johnson up 59% to 41% with 89% of the vote in.
RW_theoriginal on August 8, 2006 at 11:00 PM
IF it holds, Hank is going to win by more than the 15% predicted.
Hank LIVE again saying he is “itching” to declare and it looks like it will be “soon”.

John Evans (Cynthia’s CONVICTED campaign mgr) says it was WHITE FOLK who voted for Hank! *lol*
labwrs on August 8, 2006 at 11:06 PM
CyMc’s campaign manager says it was the white votes in Gwinnett and Rockdale that did it. Someone is in denial.

Cutty S. you summed it up for many of us. Don’t look for principles on that side of the isle. Presidents Roosevelt, Truman or Kennedy would die instantly again, if they woke up and saw their party today. Sad for the party, sad for the country and sad for democracy.
Unrelated, of course I await ‘results’ and not ‘rults’.
Also, I’ve been wanting to say this for so long - I consider the commenters on this board almost family now, including the sincere lefties.
Sadly, Mr. Lieberman just conceded. Nov. will be different. It says so much about us, to feel this much for a man who votes 90% of the time against us. Talk about his decency and talk about our principles!
Entelechy on August 8, 2006 at 11:08 PM
How soon before we hear some vintage McKinney-style Jew blame?
Kid from Brooklyn on August 8, 2006 at 11:09 PM
Hank declares (sortof) VICTORY!
Calls the Republican running for Congress against him a “worthy opponent”..classy statement.
labwrs on August 8, 2006 at 11:10 PM
87% of vote in
Hank is pulling away - 59% to 41%
Standby for Cat 5 excuse storm “Cynthia”.
Marvin on August 8, 2006 at 11:12 PM
Soon KID..her Daddy is sure to be with her and since Evans already blamed “whitey”, Daddy McK (who likes to throw PUNCHES at other Legislators) is the one who loves to blame the Jews!
Her few supporters are chanting “We Want Cynthia” but she is so far a no show ..not even to say thank you.

Sen. Joseph Lieberman - an honest man, a great man, a great American.
Entelechy on August 8, 2006 at 11:12 PM
No shit, I live on the other side of Atlanta, but I can hear the turbines starting to spool up down there already.
B Moe on August 8, 2006 at 11:17 PM
I was watching Lieberman’s concession speech and I noticed… he’s no longer bound to the party line and suddenly could SAY things we’ve all wanted heard. Kinda like Bob Dole AFTER his ‘96 election. I wonder if this might not spur on more candidates going “rogue” instead of adhering to some Q factor bullet point partyline…
Skywise on August 8, 2006 at 11:17 PM
Some could convincingly argue that it happened long ago, but I think this officially marks the point in time when the Dems abandoned all sanity.
Anti-Semitism is on the rise in the Dhimmicratic party, Joe Lieberman was unfairly targeted because he is a Jew.
speed647 on August 8, 2006 at 11:20 PM
McKinney campaign HQ is a GHOSTOWN *lol* They realize she isnt going to show and has lost. Behind the reporter are about 10 people over half of them children. The only other people there are hogging down the food before it disappears! Reporter says they have been told Cynthia is “on her way”. She better hurry before she is left speaking to an empty room!
labwrs on August 8, 2006 at 11:20 PM
You’re right, Entelechy…Liebs’ conservative scorecard is like a 10; but it’s the principle. To address some of your earlier take, yes, what happened to the Dems is sad. On the other hand, the Dem party as we knew it was long dead; and things have to die and decompose before they rebirth into something new and beautiful. So this isn’t a totally bad thing.
Kid from Brooklyn on August 8, 2006 at 11:20 PM
labwrs,
She better be bringing a few folks with her. That one little girl could barely hold the sign up anymore.
RW_theoriginal on August 8, 2006 at 11:22 PM
It might. There are no doubt at least some democrats who are really more of libertarians, as they see the insanity of the far left take FULL control (instead of merely nominal control) of the party they may well bolt.
Or maybe not. I suppose only time will tell.
