“Full support” for Hezbollah against Israel, by Baathist decree.
They don’t call him a moron for nothing.
In fairness, it might not have been his call. As Captain Ed notes with eyebrow arched, his participation in matters of state lately has become somewhat more “selective”. And even if it was his call, it wasn’t really his call. He or the Baathists or whoever’s nominally steering that crazy train wouldn’t move on this without approval from their Iranian masters, especially given the mutual defense pact between the two.
So the real worry isn’t what this signals about Syria’s intentions, but what it signals about Iran’s. Maybe the mullahs want in too and this is their way of setting the tripwire.
Meanwhile, in Baghdad, another Iranian client is stirring the pot. Maliki’s got him in the crosshairs and he knows it, which means it’s time for a little self-preservational anti-Zionist populism. He’s positioning himself now so that later, when the Iraqi military finally comes calling, he can accuse the government of being Jew puppets who are only targeting him because of his opposition to Israel.
Hey — if it didn’t work, demagogues wouldn’t use it so frequently.

Back in Lebanon, there’s a report in the Daily Star that Israel has taken out large parts of the country’s infrastructure, including two major bridges and several power plants.
Update: Rick Moran’s tracking the rumor, first reported at Ynet, that Israel’s given Assad 72 hours to turn over the two kidnapped soldiers or suffer the consequences. At least one Israeli officer has denied it, but Ynet is a credible source.
Update: I think it’s now safe to say that Iran has overplayed its hand with the nuke program. Not only is Bush blaming Hezbollah for the crisis, but get this:
Foreign ministers of 18 Arab countries held an emergency summit in Cairo on Saturday over Israel’s expanding assault on Lebanon, but squabbles over the legitimacy of Hezbollah’s attacks on Israel – including the capture of two Israel Defense Forces soldiers that sparked the 4-day battle – appeared likely to keep participants from reaching a consensus, delegates said.
The Saudi foreign minister appeared to be leading a camp of ministers criticizing the guerrilla group’s actions, calling them “unexpected, inappropriate and irresponsible acts.”…
Supporting his stance were representatives of Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Iraq, the Palestinian Authority, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, delegates said on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks.
The members of the summit have passed a resolution calling for UN intervention. Lebanon’s prime minister agrees. Amr Moussa, about whom you’ll find voluminous posting in the LGF archives, somberly declares the Middle East peace process “dead.”
Update: Catching up with stuff I missed overnight, Israel has stationed three Patriot missile batteries in Haifa in hopes of intercepting the next rocket attack. They’ve also struck areas of Beirut not controlled by Hezbollah for the first time, taking out a lighthouse and attacking the city’s seaport. They’ve also destroyed Lebanon’s coastal radar stations.
Update: Appeasement poster boy Jose Luis Zapatero holds true to form.
Update: Hezbollah continues to show off the range of its rockets by striking Tiberias, a town more than 20 miles south of the Lebanon border.
Update: Not surprisingly in light of today’s summit, Iran would like a word with Saudi Arabia.
Note that Ali Larijani is the Iranian diplomat whom Debka said would remain in Damascus until the end of the crisis. Either Debka was wrong (ahem) or there’s since been a change in plans. Time magazine has analysis suggesting, reasonably, that Tehan doesn’t want to get involved here, but if that’s so, then how to explain Syria’s declaration that it will come to the aid of Hezbollah?
For its part, Israel has accused Iranian Revolutionary Guard troops of having helped fire the missile that damaged its ship yesterday.
Update: Not wanting to be outmaneuvered by al-Sadr on his anti-Zionist credentials, Iraqi PM Maliki has denounced the Israeli raids on Lebanon.

It would seem that the proxy hizb’allah is being used by the proxy Syria, who is being used by the puppetmaster Iran. One wonders if the proxy hamas is being used by the proxy hizb’allah?

I bet assad is wishing he had opened up a For Eyes franchise instead of takin’ over when his old man died.
The next time an Israeli F-16 buzzes bashir’s house to ’scare’ him, I hope the pilot says “Ooops, did I just drop a Mark-82? Sorry, my bad!”
Tony737 on July 15, 2006 at 11:02 AM
Tony,
A Mark-82 is only a 500-lb er. Now, if the pilot were to drop all his Mk-82s, that might be different ;).

“Zapatero said Saturday that Israel’s offensive against Lebanon could fuel radical Islam ….”
Anyone know how to say “Suck my balls, Kyle” in Spanish?
Nice “Jew signal,” btw.

while the moonbats at kos are showing support of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and irans call for the elimination of Israel as a jewish nation, members of the ARAB league are criticizing Hezbollah for attacks the saudi minister calls “unexpected, inappropriate and irresponsible acts.” How far out of touch is the left, when the saudis are more supportive of Israels self-defensive actions than THEY are????

Kill the head and the body dies. It’s time for Israel to turn Iran into a glowing glass parking lot.

It might also piss a bunch of Jews off and maybe some redneck Gyreens too. Didja ever think of that, Zappy?

The U.S. takes out Afghanistan and Iraq. Israel cleans out Lebanon and Syria. Maybe we should team up and do Iran and just get if over with.

There is no doubt that Iran is behind most of the actions that have ratcheted up this war. Iran wants this war, and those who believe we should hit them at this time are right IMHO.
It seems to me that Iran wants to destabilize things in the Middle East so they can continue with their Nuke program unhindered. Look at it from their point of view. They see America divided on Iraq, they have assisted the terrorists in Iraq in the belief that we will cut and run [thanks to the liberals], and they must believe that America can be stretched so thin as to be beatable.
If we don’t do something soon Iran might be right.

Every time Israel or any western nation worries about whether their actions will make the Muslims madder, the Muslims see a Green Light and move forward a few paces. Let them get mad.
They’ll get over it, or they won’t. If they get what they want just by yelling and getting angry, how…not big enough…HOW can we ever expect to win?
If a kid gets an ice cream cone from his mommy just because he screams bloody murder-that’s setting a bad precedent. Muslims learn like children and other democrats to yell their way to success. I have an idea-let’s tell them no. If they scream that Jews did this or that, tell them to get over it. If they claim that their god is insulted, tell them to tell it to Allah, because we don’t care.
I look around and see millions of people who don’t care if My God is insulted. As my Bible says:”17Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men. 18If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men. 19Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.”
That right there is a polar opposite of the Muslim ideal.
If they yell, we don’t have to yell louder. Just tell them “No.”

I think it’s about time for the U.S. to field test the new 28,000 pound bunker busters; on the Iranian centrifuges and other equipment. Drop leaflets 30 minutes before to clear the site of people, keep an ‘eye in te sky’ on them to get video proof if they run civilians into the site, then let them have it. Same treatment with North Korea and the launch pads.
We either fight this war now, or when both lunatics have nuclear weapons. I’m afraid those are the only choices we have at the moment.

That’s a great bat-signal.jpg picture. The shading and dynamism between the human figure (Moses?) leaning towards a cloud darkened sky, seems like the classic imagry seen in maybe a bible, or something.
I’d also like to see it without the big bright Star which is the focus, it compromises the motif of fine shading and dark contrasts.. not quite film noir, but…
Of course the picture has a purpose which is well served by the design. Behold the great picture. Who made it, is there a program available to produce such art?

I’m beginning to think that the rumor I heard about
Zapatero being hung like a girble just might have
a foundation…
attila the cuban on July 15, 2006 at 11:30 PM
Mike O, I’d like to see us fly 2 planes over there, the 1st one drops leaflets that say “Look up”. Just they look up, the bombs released by the 2nd plane are about to hit. Follow up with a few cruise missiles … “BGM-109, rockin’ Tehran, hit after hit!”
And who cares what Zappy thinks? He’s only in there ’cause his country lost the Battle of Madrid.
Tony737 on July 16, 2006 at 1:01 AM
This is a return to basics, as learned from watching the Democrats in this country. If Muslims are splintering, going off in different directions, remind them that Israel is still there and they refocus on their common goal.
