Transcript’s here.
KING: You’re saying that was a fair report, I mean that was — you believe that report to this day?
RATHER: Do I believe the truth of the story, absolutely.

Don’t miss the end, when the “powerful people” who defended Joe McCarthy conspire to “hang signs” on him.
He doesn’t tell us what the signs say. He doesn’t need to. We already know.

He’s obviously deluded, he’ll probably go to his grave thinking he was right. Pathetic.

Nobody likes a liar, Dan. Well, maybe 81% of…

They got a sayin’ in Missouri that applies to Dan (who likes sayins), “A turd don’t stink les you kick it”.
Crude One on July 13, 2006 at 6:53 AM
He’s so nuts it’s a wonder he doesn’t have a squirrel entourage.

Funny, but when asked if he believes in the “truth of the report” he answers he believes in the “truth of the story.” — Keep spinning Dan!

Maybe GWB can sue old Dan for everything he’s got when his term expires. Since Dan can’t and won’t let go of this fantasy, slander sounds like a cut and dry case.
darwin on July 13, 2006 at 8:36 AM
So where’s all this corroboration, Dan? Wouldn’t it be all over the NY Times and other media if it existed? That “pregnant pause” when King brought up a lawsuit was cute. He knows it would never work out in his favor. He was the one doing the slandering. Have fun in fantasy land, Dan.

What was the story again? That being Bush Jr. greased the TANG rails for Dubya? So freaking what?
Does anyone, anywhere think that Dubya would have ever gotten anywhere near the White House if he wasn’t his father’s son? Really? Isn’t that a more relevant and important point than how he got in and out of the TANG 35+ years ago?
You could actually make that point without having to dummy up documents to prove it.
Pablo on July 13, 2006 at 9:16 AM
On that last point…I think Dan thinks waaaaaaay too highly of himself and his reporting. Talk about delusional paranoia, he must have consulted Hillary on the vast right wing conspiracy piece.
Joe on July 13, 2006 at 9:31 AM
I have to admit that a part of me feels real sorry for Dan. He was always a lib, but now he is so far gone that reality just escapes him.
I truly believe he believes what he is saying.

Where the hell did Gallup find a group of Republicans where 42% of them actually had a favorable opinion of Dan Rather???? Massachussetts?

Good Riddens!!!
Shmo on July 13, 2006 at 12:32 PM
Did I really hear him refer to himself as an “independent-minded journalist”?
Evilwhiteguy on July 13, 2006 at 12:57 PM
His mind is independent in much the same way Mars is independent of Earth.
Jim Treacher on July 13, 2006 at 1:40 PM
Look closely at Dan’s hair.
It’s actually thin strips of aluminum foil.
Kini on July 13, 2006 at 2:08 PM
Someone let the chickens out of the barn, now the kitchen’s on fire!
SurfingKC on July 13, 2006 at 4:35 PM
I did a wikipedia on this character and I see no mention of military service, even though the Korean war was going on at the time he supposedly was becoming a journalist. So, what was HIS problem with serving his country in wartime??
He sure as heck was no Ernie Pyle.

What is most striking about Rather’s remarks is that they indicate a total hubris and lack of humility. Rather is truly a “legend in his own mind” who believes he has been martyed by the right.
On the positive side, Rather, more than anyone else, is responsible for the slide in esteem that people have for network news.
ptolemy on July 13, 2006 at 5:38 PM
Dan Rather is done, over.
I have never been able to understand why these over paid people that read their words off a teleprompter think they matter.
He tried to mislead the American People and he got caught…simple as that.
