I’m quittin’ my job to be a Burka Blue Girl Group groupie!

speed647 on July 13, 2006 at 10:08 AM

Sure. You can eat spaghetti gracefully in a burka, but what about a nice foot long hot dog? That I’d like to see. (All beef, of course!)

pistolero on July 13, 2006 at 10:47 AM

Michelle! Are you all right? You look white as a sheet!

Doug on July 13, 2006 at 10:54 AM

“Religion of Peace”

“19 people do not represent the Muslim community”

Has there EVER been a religion that is more intolerant than Islam? Women afraid to remove their veil to eat, afraid to be seen in public if they’re not completely covered; how can any Muslim honestly say that we need to be more tolerant?

Great Vent, Hot Air crew!

dalewalt on July 13, 2006 at 10:58 AM

Well, as a guy, I can only say…the darn things creep me out!

jcon96 on July 13, 2006 at 11:00 AM

Hotties for the Blue Man Group?!

The two women eating spaghetti was interesting. One goes over the rail and the other goes under then both attempt to use napkins!!!

allie on July 13, 2006 at 11:02 AM

My daughter’s graduation was at a public auditorium last year. As we were leaving, I saw a woman in a head-to-toe burka. I couldn’t take my eyes off of her. I think she was also staring back at me, couldn’t tell though. I then looked at her keeper, who was glaring back at me. Talk about a creepy feeling. I wanted to kidnap her.

moonsbreath on July 13, 2006 at 11:03 AM

All I can think of is Cousin It…

Babs on July 13, 2006 at 11:04 AM

Additional comment: There does seem to be a wide range on burkhas. It is not an all or nothing issue. In countries where it is not mandatory, there still seems to be a group of women that do wear them. The question is, by choice, or by family/religious enforcement?

jcon96 on July 13, 2006 at 11:10 AM

Thanks Michelle…now I’ll be humming “Bluuuueeeee, burka bluuuuueeee” all day long!

Religion of Sheets

moonsbreath on July 13, 2006 at 11:11 AM

“Religion of Sheets”. Love it.
It’s pretty hard to tell, but the only one I would say really looks good is the one in the HOTAIR. cap

wcarr on July 13, 2006 at 11:23 AM

“Religion of Sheets”…. someone give this guy a Pulitzer.
Great Vent today, though I am gonna have that “burka blue” song stuck in my head now.
“The burka has become a symbol of oppression….” Well golly! Maybe because it’s a manner of oppression??? But clearly that’s too obvious….

kaseiryu on July 13, 2006 at 12:00 PM

Still humming to myself: “Burka burka, Murtha jihad”

I think Michelle needs to wear the slinky black dress again (sans cutover to Helen Thomas walking the red carpet) in her next Vent to make up for the horrid screenshot above.

I wonder if the die-hard “burn the bras” femminists from decades past will step away from the abortion clinics for a few minutes to do “burn the burkas”?

Dave Shay on July 13, 2006 at 12:04 PM

I about choked this morning when I saw Michelle with the sheet! Luckily I was done with my tea. Nicely done Vent.

StephC on July 13, 2006 at 12:10 PM

Buuuut, aaall cuuultures aaare eeequal.. as another multicultural liberal head explodes.

Buuuut, aaall cuuultures aaare eeequal

I’d like to hear them tell that to the pre-teen girls in The Sudan as they’re getting circumsized. A friend of mine went down there as part of a volunteer group to encourage the “clinics” that perform this “procedure” to use clean equipment and anethetics. He doesn’t talk about it much, but what little I got out of him about his experience was horrifying.

But no, WE’RE the torturers, right?

Dave Shay on July 13, 2006 at 12:44 PM

That was a pretty jolting vent..although the Burka Blue was pretty damn catchy. Talk about a dehumanizing custom. In America, we define identity theft as someone using your name to purchase things illegally. Those women are barely allowed to exist. They have no identity. Watching that woman try to eat spaghetti was pathetic. She probably had sauce all over her face. That’s just humiliating…and we’re supposed to accept that as another quaint custom. I don’t think so. On a lighter note, is there any chance of another blooper reel? I keep wondering what you guys are leaving on the cutting room floor….thanks again guys.

austinnelly on July 13, 2006 at 12:49 PM

Random thoughts:

1) The bad music theme has just got to stop. This one was so bad I was wishing you’d go back to the Backstreet Boys. Have mercy.

2) The spaghetti thing was maybe the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. Ever. My life is now complete. Chix in burkas eating pasta. Somebody could sell videotapes of it on 4:00 a.m. informercials and get rich. Burka babes gone wild (pasta not included). Interested investors - call me.

3) I know it’s a dumb question - but where are the liberals? Why aren’t the out marching every other day in support of the oppressed women of Muslim society? Oh. Wait. They don’t care. Got it.

4) Show the spaghetti again. Make the singing stop.

5) Hey ….. this video at the end here is much, much better. Now make THIS Muslim mink eat some spaghetti on camera and we’ve got a real marketable product.

6) Seriously … how do they tell each other apart in public? Must be impossible to meet people at an amusement park.

7) Do you think they wear funny clothes under their burkas? Be honest … it’d be fun to run through a crowd whipping up burkas to see what they’re doing under there, wouldn’t it. I suspect a lot of them are wearing bikinis and making rude gestures. I could be wrong.

8) “Cousin It.” Now that’s funny. Wonder if Cousin It had trouble with spaghetti.

9) Are all Muslim gay? Just wonderin’. Not that there’s anything wrong with that …

10) In Afghanistan, is your wedding night sorta like the Secret Santa thing at the X-mas office party? You slowly unwrap your gift … hoping for tickets to the Mets game … and you get an ugly coffee mug? Is it like that?

11) Can they sell advertising space on their burkas? Holy crap, I’m a genius. This could be a marketing coup. I gotta go.

Professor Blather on July 13, 2006 at 12:56 PM

LOL…. and some sadness…. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry… I haven’t even finished watching the video… it’s paused….

That woman couldn’t even eat her Spaghetti and meatballs through her burka.

What a disgrace.

I firmly believe that the USA is a superpower, and will remain that well beyond the year 9000, because of the position that our women have in society, a free society.

These foreign societies will go no where if this philosophy is not changed.

ar_basin on July 13, 2006 at 12:59 PM

Thanks for nothin’, Michelle.

Now I can’t get that stupid Burka song outta my head!!!!

rike101 on July 13, 2006 at 1:38 PM

We were expecting to laugh, but instead we cried. Figuratively, of course.

Very, very *eery*. Where’s the global feminist outrage?

California Conservative on July 13, 2006 at 1:42 PM

Oh, did the RoP forget to cut a mouthhole? A not-so-subtle message to women to shut up and starve?

Brenda Walker on July 13, 2006 at 1:59 PM

More videos of women in Burquas eating things, please. I want to see one pour a can of soup into the opening.

JamesVersusEveryone on July 13, 2006 at 2:16 PM

That was truly creepy.

Aunt B on July 13, 2006 at 2:33 PM

jcon96:

I don’t have a simple answer for you. There is a lot of differences in Islamic style clothing for women. Here are two wikipedia links you might want to look at.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sartorial_Hijab
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abaya
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burqa

The blue burka that we saw in the music video is typical in Afghanistan. It is about as extreme as it gets. Those women are seen in small to medium sized villages and towns. In Kabul, sometimes you will see women with some western style clothes. In addition to the above, there are also bedouin style nomads in Afghanistan who travel with their flocks of sheep and goats. These woman do not wear the burka or anything similar to it, for obvious reasons. The burka is a horribly constricting garment, and you can’t be expected to herd a group of animals up and down mountains while wearing it. The clothes these women wear are practical, colorful, and aren’t dedicated to keeping them hidden and oppressed.

I never saw a blue burka in Malaysia. I did see a lot of Muslim women wearing abayas with a hijab. And instead of just the faded muted blue, they had brilliant colors of yellow or white or green. Many of these were school uniforms.

In addition, some Muslim women in Malaysia would wear very western style clothing, along with a hijab or shawl or head scarf. At an outdoor market, I saw one young woman about 18 years of age wearing a head scarf along with a “Beavis and Butthead” t-shirt. I wish I could produce a picture of it. And yes, she knew exactly who and what Beavis and Butthead were. However, this was in 2000, so I don’t know how anything has changed since then.

So in response to your question as to why they wear differnt styles:

The question is, by choice, or by family/religious enforcement?

Well, it is kind of a combination of all of the above, and the local culture. Some places, like in Afghanistan villages, it is a horror show. Other places aren’t so bad.

Also, in Afghanistan, you will never see the face of woman wearing a burka on the street. However, when you talk to them in a private room, (with a male relative present, of course) they will remove the net curtain that covers their face and head.

EFG on July 13, 2006 at 2:43 PM

It would seem to western eyes that the burqua is a reflection of the Islamist cult’s doctrines of submission. However, there is an even more insidious reason for why women in this cult are required to dress so.

When the doctrines of this cult are strictly interpreted and those interpretations enforced, the concept of tolerance is completely destroyed. No man who accepts these doctrines can tolerate the contradictory acts of others.
Thus the drive for the genocide of the infidel.

This complete lack of tolerance means that within their own society, they are incapable of coping with the act of another man casting an appraising eye upon their female properties. The burqua is their way of stemming the inevitable internal bloodshed that would normally result in their tolerance devoid cult.

ztep86 on July 13, 2006 at 2:46 PM

There’s a mosque in the small southern town where I live, but I’ve only seen one woman in a veil. Most of the muslims here are Bosnian and they love to eat, drink and party. The woman in the veil was the imam’s wife and her veil looked like a pretty headscarf. The Mennonite women are more noticible than the muslims here.

Ellen on July 13, 2006 at 2:51 PM

Ironically, I think the most effective part of this whole vent was the opening screen shot with the photoshopped version of MM wearing a white burka with a HotAir ball cap.

I’ve seen her do her vents and TV interviews and she does them well. And I’ve seen Muslim women wearing their full blown burkas scurrying down the street.

But it’s not until you see MM wearing a burka that you realize how reduced and ineffective a woman is when she wears one of those. The whole point of this vent was to show how oppressive some of this Islamic style dress can be. And I think the point would have been driven home even more forcefully if MM had done the whole thing in a burka. Because I’m sure 95% of her video presence and personality would have been destroyed.

Of course, the point would be wasted on us, since it would be merely preaching to the converted. So I suppose it is the reality based community that should see how they like their female icons wrapped in a burka, and then they can tell us it is just a “cultural tradition” or some such rot.

How would the left like Hilary Clinton or Cindy Sheehan wrapped in blue burkas? Not quite so cool anymore, is it? (I said how would the left, not the HotAir community, like having Clinton or Sheehan wrapped in blue)

Kirsten Powers wouldn’t be quite so effective as a Democratic TV spokeswoman in a burka, would she?

Yeah, that’s what I thought.

EFG on July 13, 2006 at 3:00 PM

Here in the Philippines we do have some muslim population but I’ve never seen a full on dress thing going on. In Colorado where I used to live you would see it every so often and it would make me wonder…

Where is the freedom? Where is the hope? Where is the ability to be a woman?

As for you Michelle, that white sheet is totally hot. White in spring? Heck yea! Plus, you’ve totally put the fashion world on its ear with the black hat with logo.

You go girl.

techinblack on July 13, 2006 at 4:03 PM

Hmmm, actually you might be onto something with the whole plain white burka thing.

This Friday night at Hooters I’m sponsoring a wet burka contest. The event will be BYOB (bring your own burka). The winner will receive a free one month’s supply of Sheehan-approved ice cream and smoothies, suitable for protest fasting!

Dave Shay on July 13, 2006 at 4:30 PM

I think they should also have to wear gloves. Come on, we can still see their knuckles.
Or what if it was like the magician’s trick with the different colored handkerchiefs all tied together. You rip off one burka, only to find 100 more.

kenny1ram on July 13, 2006 at 5:09 PM

That ball cap brings out my desire. Stone her!!!!!

Hening on July 13, 2006 at 5:27 PM

How doing a “Twilight Zone” clip with the role reversal of women taking the role of men while men suddenly find themselves as women and must wear burkas. I wonder how that works while using the male urinals?

Kokonut on July 13, 2006 at 5:35 PM

This vent shows the extremes of modesty and its opposite - during the time of youth.

Lets consider the probable life of the burka girl. She wears that thing in public, not in private. She has no voice in politics, in public. She is expected to raise a family of several children and stay at home. She probably will not experience several pre-marital significant encounters; or the depression of rejection when a mate leaves her for someone more exciting; or the depression of finding she is pregnant and single; or the guilt of an abortion. Her husband will probably stay with her and provide for her and their children even after the years steal her youth and beauty.

No, I am not promoting Islam or burkas. But do not be surprised that the fathers and mothers of that culture do not want their daughters to experience the “freedom” and immorality as they see it portrayed in our movies.

EFG:

Fascinating input and insights. One of the worst things about the Internet is that everyone has an opinion, with most of the opinions based on nothing.

It is always interesting to hear from someone who actually has BEEN there or SEEN that, if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the info.

Professor Blather on July 13, 2006 at 6:59 PM

Can Time hold its own in an environment in which broadcasting withering criticism of it is so easy? I hope not.

Kralizec on July 13, 2006 at 8:14 PM

roydee - I think your probable life of a burka girl is way off. Often in that culture, women are considered property and can be abused or discarded at will.

Also…

This just in. In order to court the Muslim vote, Hillary will now start wearing a Burka at all times in public. This is also expected to raise her poll numbers among everyone else as well.

tbolick on July 13, 2006 at 8:17 PM

everyone has an opinion, with most of the opinions based on nothing.

It is always interesting to hear from someone who actually has BEEN there or SEEN that, if you know what I mean.

I have lived many years now in high muslim population areas of greater Detroit.

At the first location near the mosque on Dix most women wore headscarves and long gowns. I made the mistake of blurting a Hebrew greeting to a group of them instead of arabic. It was not pretty. They absolutely did not mingle. Zilch. They were not assimilating but seemed more clannish than dangerous.

Then I lived some years in Dearborn with the highest muslim population in the US. You can live off Warren avenue and never need English. Most women covered their heads but not faces. There was a double standard in the way the men treated non muslim women (a lot of detached contempt) and muslim women (studious avoidance and no eye contact). Some crossovers dressed western and Dearborn has its share of honor killings. The public school gave privileges to muslims, who were allowed to have Korans while non muslims were not allowed Bibles in school. I watched a school cable program where a bilingual muslim class-aide with a headscarf interviewed female muslim students, mostly in English, but interjected arabic muslim religious phrases like ‘inshallah’ while the equivalent Christian phrases are not welcome in the same school system.

There was often a sense that they were offended by us.

In the third city where I now live there has been a sea change. A large percentage of the younger women I see have radicalized. The majority come to shop in long black robes and a high percentage of them are now covering their faces with black fabric except for an eye slit. The attitude of these ladies is similar to the ‘hateful chatter behind the Veil’ link above. Bump into one and they are contaminated. Do not touch their kids. They act as if you are a toxic obstacle.

This is very recent. Everyone notices it. It is worrying. I think how easy it would be to bring in a weapon, a bomb or some poison under those robes.

Missing are the normal body language expressing friendship and goodwill you get when there is language difference.

I pulled into a tire repair place with a flat yesterday and ‘Larry’ turned out to be ‘Kamal’ who studiously ignored me until I gave up, and drove two more miles to a (non-muslim) place that would wait on me.

Something ain’t melting in the melting pot.

The signs are not good here.

entagor on July 13, 2006 at 8:43 PM

Entagor, where the hell do you live now, so I can avoid it totally?

Brenda Walker on July 13, 2006 at 8:55 PM

tbolick, I agree there is a lot of room for abuse in their system. I have been in several Arab countries for short times - oil field. With the very few people I have known the family seems to be very important and seems to be stable.

roydee43 on July 13, 2006 at 9:34 PM

Entagor, where is Kamals place?
I keep a tire repair kit and a compressor in my car. Easy to fix a nail hole and I would have blocked the road to his garage while I did it.

Dr. Charles G. Waugh on July 13, 2006 at 11:45 PM

Aren’t the burkas used to keep the Islamic guys in check, not giving them any “lust triggers” so that they do not sin?
Good luck with that, Islamic guys. It puts the responsibility on the women not to incite, and takes the responsibility away from the men. If a man rapes, he can blame the woman. That’s makes for one screwed up society.

Doug on July 14, 2006 at 2:09 AM

A woman’s *HAIR* is her covering. Leave it to Islam to mess up scripture…….

:/

VonHelton on July 14, 2006 at 8:32 AM

Sorry took me forever to comment. I just saw this and I’m new here.
Forget the debate. Have you met my Mother? If The Rock, Brad Pitt and Jackie Chan showed up at her door and told her she had to wear a burka at all times…well, they’d be unconscience and nursing several broken bones in a very short time.
And that’s her being nice, and because she doesn’t own a gun.
It may be just because I grew up in da South. But American women don’t put up with that kinda stuff.
Shira law folks..Ya wanna tell Queen Latifa she’s gotta wear a burka? Good luck with that.
I’m wary and watchful, but not worried. That kind of oppressive culture can have no permanent place in America. It will fail, just a matter of time.
Most Americans still are of the ‘What?!? You better hope you didn’t say what I think you just said!’ type of mentality.
We don’t tolerate exclusionism in these parts.
We also don’t tolerate oppression of women.
If a woman doesn’t smack you down 1st, there are a whole lotta guys waiting in line to do that job.

Our culture loves and protects women. Mostly because we know what happens when we(men) tell the Ladies what to do and how to behave and how to dress.
That is:Nothing good.
Tell Michelle Malkin or me mom or me sis how they should live their lives..you won’t be happy with the answer, trust me Shira Law guys.
