Gorbachev: U.S. democracy hubris “worse than AIDS”

When a Russian tells you something’s “worse than AIDS,” he’s not kidding around.
It’s nice to know that this particular yardstick is now safe for polite conversation:
“We have made some mistakes,” he said, referring to recent attacks on Russia’s democracy. “So what? Please don’t put even more obstacles in our way. Do you really think you are smarter than we are?”
The former general secretary of the Soviet Union Communist Party accused Americans of arrogance and trying to impose their way of life on other nations.
“Americans have a severe disease — worse than AIDS. It’s called the winner’s complex,” he said. “You want an American style-democracy here. That will not work.”
In honor of Gorby, and because I need to empty the chamber of dumb stuff before regional war in the Gulf breaks out, here are a few quotes I’ve been saving. Guess the speaker. For extra credit, identify which, if any, are worse than AIDS.
1. “I think the statements of your vice president of this sort are the same as an unsuccessful hunting shot.”
2. “I categorically did not call him a terrorist. I’m not cultured and I don’t even know what an Islamic terrorist is.”
3. “It seemed like traditional values had been temporarily suspended. I didn’t recognize this country, we didn’t know what year it was and we didn’t know what country we were in.”
4. “There is nothing honorable in your history. You are people of money, prostitution, banks, gold, and petrol. You do all this in order to suck (the blood) of the peoples, and to fight them by means of your knowledge. You, human beings? No way!”
You won’t guess the last one because he isn’t famous. I wanted people to see it anyway.
Update: Iowa Voice has multiple Gorbasms.

Yes, Mike. Yes, we do. Now don’t you have a sunnit with Jimmah or something you should be attending?

I’m not sure what Gorby would know about winning, but it’s good to see he still believes in glasnost.

Well, let’s answer this way. There’s a reason the word “former” appears before Soviet Union and not before United States of America.

Yes, Gorbachev, life was good under Stalin, heh??

Yeah…but if there were no prostitution what would the Oil Sheiks do when they tired of gambling away their countries’ oil revenues at Monte Carlo?
Huh?
I’m askin’

At least American style capitalism seems to be working in Russia. Moscow is now the most expensive city on the planet. Apartments that went for $9,000 10 years ago now cost $300,000. Putin and Gorbachev are both unreconstructed Communists. Although I admire Putin for pulling Russia out of its economic tailspin. Nothing will really change there until their generation is out of power.

Sour grapes, Tovarisch? Scoreboard, Comrade. Dos Vidanya!

I know I’m an apologist, but this line really made me laugh:
I could have sworn that the guy that forced down the “iron curtain” was Ronald Reagan. It happened despite the left calling him a madman for even attempting to take on the Russians in an arms race, despite being accused of breaking the bank of the US and taxing our great-great-grandchildren, and it happened entirely due to Reagans belief that the people of the US and the free market systems here could outlast the choke-hold that communism places on its people and economy.
In fact, I don’t think I know anyone not a member of the far kook left that believes for a minute that ol’ Gorby tore that wall (or curtain) down out of the kindness of his heart, but simply because he had no other choice to, they had lost.
But like I said, I’m an apologist.

My little boy is four. If anyone says to him, “Mr. Gorbachev,” he will respond, “Tear down this wall!” He’s been doing this for years. I couldn’t be more proud. Now that line from Reagan’s speech is my phone’s ringtone.
Viva Reagan!

Look at the USSR then(1989-1990) and the ’state’, or countries , as it/they look today. Dems, PAY ATTENTION HERE. The power and leadershhip crumbled. Chaos ensued and still has a strangle hold. Imagine if there were Al Qaeda killers in every dark corner of the USSR ever since 1990 just waiting for weaknesses to appear then pouncing over and over again .
See what will happen if we cut and run from Iraq, but only much worse. This enemy is satanic. They cut off heads and bodies. Now look at the map (especially you ‘cold-blood Murtha’) and see where Iraq is in the world. Do we really want AQ running the place… with those neighbors?
Now look at Japan and what happened since 1945.
.
More on Gorby later, we’ve met and talked. He’s one sad dude.

You say that like it’s a bad thing…

Where does one get Reagan ringtones?
Kid from Brooklyn on July 12, 2006 at 7:28 PM
Our version on winner’s complex is to spread democracy. Their version would be a world of slave states. Hmmmm… think I like ours better! I didn’t realize Gorby was still around…. Howard Dean must’ve inspired him

Old Gorby is just suffering from a terminal case of sour grapes.

Kid,
On some newer phones (ex. Palm Treo), any mp3 clip can be used as a ringtone. There are lots of places to find Reagan audio/video. One good one is here.
Scroll down to ‘87 for the Brandenburg gate speech. “Tear down this wall” was just the peak of a great speech overall, IMHO.
