Breaking: Shamil Basayev killed by Russian security forces

posted at 9:17 am on July 10, 2006 by Allahpundit

The Chechen Bin Laden. Alleged mastermind of the Moscow theater siege — and of Beslan.

I don’t put much stock in anything the Russian government tells us, but for what it’s worth:

Basayev was planning a terrorist attack in southern Russia to coincide with Russia hosting the Group of Eight summit of world leaders this weekend, reports said.

I hate to say it, but I question the timing.

No details on the killing yet. Here’s hoping he suffered.

Update: Pablo notes below that another top Chechen deputy is dead in an “accident.” Coincidence, or Putin emulating Michael Corleone?

Update: Basayev’s greatest hits.

Update: The plot thickens. Kavkaz Center, Chechnya’s Islamist “news” website, says local authorities are claiming that the accident that killed the deputy might also have killed Basayev:

Earlier there was information about an explosion of a cargo vehicle KAMAZ in village of Ekazhevo, as a result of which 4 Mujahideen were dead.

The representative of Ingush puppet militia has claimed that from 4 dead Mujahideen 3 have been unidentified and one of them is probably Shamil Basayev and also inhabitants of Ingushetia Isa Kushtov and Tarhan Ganijev. The reason of explosion was a careless use of an explosive.

Who’s lying to save face? Putin, who says it was Russian security forces what done it, or the Chechens?

Update: Recently in the news at Kavkaz Center: Basayev thanks Iraqis for elimination of Russian diplomats.

Update: There can’t have been much left of him if he died in a truck bomb explosion, but Russia’s pretty confident they’ve got their man:

The body of Shamil Basayev, who was eliminated during Monday’s special operation in Ingushetia, has been identified, Ingush Deputy Prime Minister Bashir Aushev told Interfax.

“Fragments of the bodies of two militants were found on the scene of the explosion. Basayev’s body has been identified through some of the fragments, including his head,” Aushev said.

Update: More from Interfax: possibly up to ten terrorists killed with Basayev in the explosion. It’s being described as a “carefully planned sweep operation.” Accident or not?

Update: The Times of London thinks this will do major damage to the Chechen jihad. They also say they’ve seen the body:

Shamil Basayev’s death has been announced before but there seems to be no doubt about it this time. The FSB has formally announced it and they have shown brief footage of his body, lying on his back, the right arm bandaged and bloodied. It was recognisably him – he had a thick black beard as he has had since the early 1990s when he first became involved in the Chechen movement.

Update: Gateway Pundit has video of ABC’s interview with Basayev from 2005.

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Good shooting, boys. The world is a better place today.

Ohhh, tough day for the Chechen jihad.

4 militants dead as terrorist blast goes wrong in south Russia

Pablo on July 10, 2006 at 9:40 AM

Just more of the same chaotic jihad mess.

Shmo on July 10, 2006 at 9:54 AM

Could the mission the now expired four were supposedly en route to be the G-8 related attack Moscow refers to?

Pablo on July 10, 2006 at 9:56 AM

If Basayev was taken out with an own goal, that would be pretty damned amusing.

Pablo on July 10, 2006 at 10:07 AM

Well, when they select his successor, perhaps Condi should indicate to the Russians our willingness to share nuclear technology with the Chechens as they do the North Koreans and the Iranians!

Now that, my friends, is my kind of diplomacy!

It’s not HOW, it’s HOW MANY. Bravo.

Looks like we’re up to thirteen, and it sure looks like the same incident.

Pablo on July 10, 2006 at 10:59 AM

We’ve all seen this headline before, only to be denied later. Let’s all do the Christian thing and pray. Everybody hold hands. Let us pray … let us pray that it’s TRUE this time!

Read the story about this man on Google News. Took me till the 10th or so paragraph to find out that, “Hey, this guys was a Muslim.” Interesting, indeed.

I’ll say this much for the Russians- they don’t screw around when their people are murdered…

Abigail
Yeah they kill everything and anything, even if its own civlians. Can you imagine what would have happened to Bush if in trying to rescue hostages or end a standoff with terrorists we’d have a Beslan or a Moscow theatre? Still its good work by Putin even if he’s getting weirder and weirder

Defector01 on July 10, 2006 at 12:14 PM

‘Tis a good day, a beautiful day!

thegreatbeast on July 10, 2006 at 12:18 PM

Did I miss the part where Putin went to the Democrats or the UN to beg and plead for two years until they killed the beast? Oh were they worried that they found no WMD’s in the raid that ended the murderes reign?

EricPWJohnson on July 10, 2006 at 1:41 PM

If this Basayev was indeed the mastermind of the Theater attack and Belsan, justice has been done. I want to see the same justice for the Iraqi people who were murdered by Hussein’s regime-his trial is taking much too long, in my opinion.
It is good to see Russia responding to attacks on their turf-I wish they hadn’t been dragging their feet when we were going into Iraq. I guess it took Russians being killed before they would respond. Oh, and also it took awhile for Hussein’s “Food for Oil” bribes to run out. An honest polititian is one who stays bought.

How odd. Here’s an article from this past November stating Iran is secretly training Chechen’s to fight against Russia.

moonsbreath on July 10, 2006 at 2:28 PM

Defector01- I hear you loud and clear. The left would be screaming for President Bush’s assasination if a Beslan took place here.

Abigail Adams on July 10, 2006 at 3:33 PM

Who’s lying to save face? Putin, who says it was Russian security forces what done it, or the Chechens?

Sounds like a true accident to me. The Russions got lucky I think, and will of course seek credit for it.

But, if they initiated the “explosion” on purpose, more power to them. One less human cockroach.

What we in the West think we know about what happened at the Nord Ost theater in Moscow and more importantly at Beslan bears no resemblance to reality. I have to suggest to everyone here to read the book Terror At Beslan, by John Giduck. An American Special Ops and Counter-terrorism expert, he was the only person afforded unique and unprecedented access to the survivors of Beslan. He was there on the third day of the siege when the bombs inside the gym exploded and the Special Forces had to assault. He spent months sifting through the aftermath. Because of his background he is uniquely qualified to dissect the terror attack, the 3-day siege, and the resultant conflagration within the school.

His book is excellent and the MUST-READ of the year – and critical for every parent and grandparent to read. That is no exaggeration. A terrorist attack on American schools is too horrific to contemplate – therefore we must. Islamic terrorists have promised to attack American schools and that Beslan was only a trial run. How do we know that they will follow through? Because as LTC Dave Grossman has said, the best predictor of future conduct is past behavior. They already have attacked schools all over the world, they will attack ours. It is only a matter of time.

For more specific info on the book, I have reviewed it in detail here. I have no other attachment to the book other than, as a former Army officer and concerned parent, I recognize how crucial it is for America to read it and implement the very practical preparations found within its pages.

BTW, Chechen terrorists are among the most brutal in the world. They are harsh and depraved even among themselves. They start their children young, forcing them to revel in torture at a very early age – watching their fathers torture others, and learning how to saw heads off at 11 and 12 – when our kids are playing Little League. They are hard-core Islamists and deserve no sympathy. Just some food for thought.
