Zarqawi’s supposed successor in jail in Egypt?

Yeah, yeah, I know: Al-Jazeera. But Al-Bawaba’s got it too. The story didn’t originate with either of them, anyway.
It’s probably a case of mistaken identity. As I recall, there was a report after 9/11 that Mohammed Atta had been found alive in the Middle East. And so he had — a different Mohammed Atta. Factor in the mujahedeen’s fondness for pseudonyms and there are probably forty to fifty guys named “Abu al-Masri” wanted for terrorism overseas.
Whatever. Good enough for Stratfor, good enough for Hot Air!

Maybe they put three guys with the same name in charge of Al Qaeda in Iraq, hoping at least one of them would survive to the end of the year.

You mean we dn’t have to try and track the leader down? Well that sure makes our lives easier. Thanks Al-Qaeda!
