Israel: Release Shalit — or we’ll kill Haniyeh

It’s probably safe to say there won’t be any Oslo deals with Hamas in the near future.

It could be that Shalit is already dead and Israel knows it, and they’re putting the letter out to give themselves political cover to target Haniyeh (i.e., he had fair warning). If not, expect them to deny having sent the letter in the morning; confirming it would be tantamount to daring Hamas to kill him, which isn’t the most prudent move when dealing with a wacko jihadist honor/shame culture.
Expect some whining tomorrow from the usual suspects about Israel’s willingness to target a democratically elected leader, as though the legitimacy of terrorism depended upon its degree of popular acclaim. The Saudis might elect Osama if given the chance, but that wouldn’t stop us from putting his head on a stick. Or “shouldn’t,” I should probably say; this is Bush we’re talking about, after all.
If Shalit turns up dead, Haniyeh won’t be the only one targeted for termination. The question is, does the hit list also include Assad?
Update: Debka says, contrary to yesterday’s reports, that it’s likely no doctor has examined Shalit.
James Joyner calls Israel’s gambit “stupid beyond words.”
Update: I can’t find anything about this story in this morning’s Israeli papers. Did the Australian blow it? Or is everyone pretending, a la Kennedy with one of Khrushchev’s letters during the Cuban Missile Crisis, that it doesn’t exist?

Hamas demands that 1000 Muslims are worth the life of one Jewish man. If 1000 muslims are not released from Israeli jails, Shalit is a dead man.
Sounds like Million Man Math to me.
This is Israel’s chance to absolutely crush Hamas once and for all, both militarily and politically, and they should not settle for a job half done.

I only ask what would the American people do if we had Mexican terrorists attack and kidnap a National Guardsman? Would we release drug lords and known gang members to get them back or would we demand they release him or suffer the consequences? I say make Hamas pay for their arrogance towards Israel and the U.S.
Free him now or as a fitting line from a movie: “Say hello to my little friend.”

Looks like Israel has finally had enough of this shit from the Palestinians. Go get ‘em boys.
I just wish our Government had the same cojones.
speed647 on July 1, 2006 at 1:23 AM
Assumming the story is accurate, the interesting thing is how little response the rest of the world has made. The near silence sends a clear message.
My conclusion: Israel is about to deliver a very heavy blow indead. (And about time.)
And the rest of the world is going to watch it happen and do nothing until it is over. The usual suspects will wring their hands when it is over, of course, and call Israel names. But they are not trying to stop it from happening.
So… The next move seems clear. What happens after that?

Man alive are they pissed!
I’ve never seen them this angry
If I was a palestinian I’d be SERIOUSLY worried
Defector01 on July 1, 2006 at 1:35 AM
They are dealing with Tony Soprano with a beard.
No Quarter.
Jasoneverts, sorry dude, but you don’t have Mexicans blowing up busses and killing innocent people. Your argument is Non Sequitur.
Plus, we don’t negociate with Terrorist. Period.

Glad to see Israel starting to really stomp on some nuts.

Israel is not mad enough!

What I hope is that Isreal does what it says it will do and not back down. If Shalit is dead, if he is not released, they MUST keep their word… and the silence from the rest of the world is cowardice. They want to see what’s going to happen, how it plays out, before jumping on a bandwagon.
rahjr2k on July 1, 2006 at 5:25 AM
They have been warned! Raise the Black Flag!
Thank God at least one country knows how to deal with this vermin.
If all free countries stood up to them like Israel does this would would be a much better place for everyone.

I wonder how Hamas likes a taste of it’s own medicine.
I also wonder if we can out source some stuff to Israel’s diplomacy corps. I like the way they get their message across. Do it or die. Short and sweet.
darwin on July 1, 2006 at 7:39 AM
The only reason Israel has been pussyfooting around is G Wimp
Bush and Condi…..They should never have given up
Gaza,,,,now look at they mess they get from listening
to our wimp leaders.
LZVandy on July 1, 2006 at 7:40 AM
No way LZV. They definitely should have given up Gaza, and this situation has nothing to do with Israel moving out. I’m HOPING the plan continues to be a ‘give them something to lose’ strategy where they lose freedom/standard of living when they harm others.
You can’t scold children by taking stuff from them if they have nothing. Giving these childish palestinians something to take away is just the ticket. Killing a quarter million or so of them would also probably pacify them, but who wants to do that? It may come to that (this week!) but let’s hope not.

I don’t think these people have a conscience. In their blind unrelentless desire to destroy Israel and the Jews they are like mindless zombies or rabid animals. There is really only one solution for that.
docdave on July 1, 2006 at 8:51 AM
Go get ‘em Israel. Get the bastards
dennisw on July 1, 2006 at 9:08 AM
For over thirty years I’ve thought Israel, after the Yom Kippur War, should have told the US (in concert with the UN) to stuff it: “What, we should give up everything we fought for in 1967, because you, the US in self-serving appeasement mode, think you have a gas crisis???” We helped set the stage for this.
My hope, when Israel recently relinquished Gaza, was that it was the beginning of a plan to recapture it, permanently. Can’t do that effectively if you’ve got your kiddos living there.
Aunt B on July 1, 2006 at 9:59 AM
The story is BS. One story repeated by several new outlets.
Sarah D. on July 1, 2006 at 10:40 AM
God, I love Israel!
When the rest of the world takes this kind of approach – yes, Dubya, I’m talking to you – the “war on terror” will be over in about 36 minutes.
These cowards and bullies aren’t used to people actually standing up to them.
And with Israel (unlike to many of our leaders), you KNOW they mean exactly what they say.
Bet the Hamas PM is sweating right now.
How’s that feel, chump? Karma’s a bitch, ain’t it?
Professor Blather on July 1, 2006 at 10:41 AM
BTW, Allah, nice picture of Hanniyeh sweating bullets. I expect the one where he soils himself on the next update. If only there was that kind of sack in the District of Crack.

The Phallus-tinians have a penchant for choosing the losing sides.
1 They supported Nazi Germany
2 They supported Soviet Russia
3 They supported the Arabs in the 1967 and 1973 Israeli wars
4 They are supporting the terrorists now
And all the while they have been fawned over like spoiled babies. It’s time to teach them a lesson. Grow up or blow up.No more wasted money and tears.
MaiDee on July 1, 2006 at 11:00 AM
Dam… if true… did someone finaly translate Heinlein’s Starship Trooper into Hasidic????
After all… “men are not potatoes”.
Romeo13 on July 1, 2006 at 11:22 AM
Is it “go get ‘em” time? Even the Russians, albeit in a much more limited way, have announced they plan to hunt down and take out the murderers of their four Embassy workers in Baghdad. Details at “Russians Hunt Iraq Jihadis”. (Putin apparently is reviving an old Russian tradition of tracking down terrorists wherever they are. Is Bush taking note? Can he get CIA “workers” off their comfy leather sofas?)
gringoman on July 1, 2006 at 11:27 AM
The world will always support the Palestinians no matter what they do or who they kill because Israel is supported by the United States. Support for the Palestinian terrorists is a tacit way of denouning the U.S.
I agree with all who say enough is enough. Let’s team up with Israel and any other country that’s had enough of this muslim bullshit and give them the option so beautifully stated by MaiDee above; “Grow up or blow up. No more wasted money and tears”.
darwin on July 1, 2006 at 12:06 PM
I agree with this
All Israel did was give them a place to fight from more easily by giving up Gaza… and I’ve been pissed off at George since. (actually, when Israel had Arafat surrounded and trapped four years back and Georgie got them to back off…)
Israel has survived this long because they’ve been hard lined about stuff. America used to be… but the libs are killing us and making us weak, cheering for our enemy, and stabbing us in the back.
rahjr2k on July 1, 2006 at 3:46 PM
“the libs are killing us and making us weak, cheering for our enemy, and stabbing us in the back”.
Yes. They’re the epitome of weakness, begging for a bigger and bigger government to care for them.
Liberals are essentially human parasites, and as with any parasite, it eventually KILLS its host unless it’s removed.

Does anyone in the Middle East respect Israel? No.
Will they ever respect or accept Israel through negotiations and treaties?
No.
But they will respect Israel, at least for a generation, if 80% of the Gaza Palistinian population gets wiped out in one battle.
Look at how small the Gaza strip is. It’s like a minature honey-pot, having become the home of many of their avowed enemies. Israel can, in one attack, wipe out most of their pests and retake Gaza as nessesary to protect their borders.
Most of those Palistinians who ‘claimed’ Gaza would be dead. Dead men can’t shoot rockets into Israel or torture and kill innocent civilians.
It’s not like Israel has to worry about what the world would think of them if they wiped Gaza clean:”they don’t get no respect” already, so nothing is going to make the world love them anyway. But they would be respected/feared if they re-took Gaza, and that counts for something. It may even be a nessesary step, to keep Iran’s weapons holstered. We shall see.

About time is all I can say….You can only slap someone in the face so many times before they respond. Hamas got in over their head this time, and will cry to the UN to bail them out from the beat down the “Israeli aggressors” are handing out. I for one hope Hamas will be forced to beg for peace on this, and show the world what cowards they are.
jcon96 on July 2, 2006 at 10:47 AM
I hope the Israelis destroy Hamas once and for all.
Then they can go after Fatah next.
Abigail Adams on July 2, 2006 at 1:36 PM
Just do it! Oh, please, oh please.
Of course, Iran would have to step in and help their “brothers.” Then that would be our excuse to let loose on their nuclear targets — Isreal is our ally.
