Bill O’Reilly said that the paper was so leftwing that even its own readers disagreed wtih it. In support of this, he said that of 18,000 voters, 90% disagreed with the cartoon.

However, you can’t take these sorts of surveys as indicating anything at all. This wasn’t a poll, this was something people had to decide to vote on. So the only people who will take the time to vote are those who feel strongly about it, which is not going to be representative of the actual population. Also, these polls are subject to manipulation. Case in point, LGF became aware of this poll, and his lizardoids immediately swarmed all over the poll en-mass and voted on it. For what it is worth, if you look at the LGF comments, it appears that prior to the LGF swarm, 28% of the respondents approved of the cartoon. After the LGF swarm, only 10% of the respondents approved. Which just goes to show, these sort of self selecting surveys or polls are entirely worthless. Even before the lizardoids skewed the results, the results were already worthless and untrust worthy because only those people who were fired up enough to take the time to vote are those who do. A much better way to survey is via random telephone surveys. Not perfect, mind you, but much much more statistically reliable.

So what happens? Bill and Kirsten and Michelle end up debating something that has no basis in any sort of statistical reality.

Oh, and in the interest of full disclosure, I have to admit that I too went right from the LGF site and voted against the cartoon, so I guess I am partially to blame for this skewed and worthless poll as well.

But the cartoon is still an abomination.

Yeah, I was expecting someone to ask her: “What are these problems that Democrats have with the Times?”. I can only imagine the deer in the headlights response that would have followed.

OK, I was being a bit sarcastic. Well maybe a lot. But still. You are at least part right here. Kirstin isn’t a total moron. She is pretty dumb on some issues, but she isn’t a “groupthink” toe-the-party-line type of liberal. She actually does use her brain — some of the time, at least, pity it’s not all of the time — and when she does she actually thinks about the positives and negatives of any position she takes. And that kind of liberal has the potential to eventually face reality and realize they are on the wrong side.

It will be a long battle ahead. But we have to do it at the house.
