Breaking: CU to fire Ward Churchill

Update: CU has posted a statement from the chancellor.

[O]ne of our most cherished principles is academic freedom—the right to pursue and disseminate knowledge without threat of sanction.

But, as is true with all liberties enjoyed by all Americans, with freedom comes responsibility. Appropriately, we in the academy are held to high standards of integrity, competence and accuracy, at the same time we freely engage in spirited, unimpeded discourse in the “marketplace of ideas.” The faculty members on both Committees fully understood their duty to uphold the standards that allow them academic freedom and freedom of expression, and I applaud them for their work, their dedication, and their commitment.

Churchy’s got ten days to request special hearings on the propriety of his termination.

Update: Pirate Ballerina, who’s owned the Churchill saga from start to finish, has audio of the chancellor’s press conference.

Yea !!!! Finally, some common sense and justice in academia !!

So that’s why Iron Eyes always cried, he knew WC wasn’t what he claimed to be….

ScottG on June 26, 2006 at 5:29 PM

And here comes the LLLs about how the “NeoCons” influenced CU. Look for Churchill to go on a national tour to spout his own conspiracy theory for his firing.

Now, this is the type of “cut and run” I want to see from University officials who should know better about kooks. I think CU officials was cutting their own rope with a very, very dull scissor.

Kokonut on June 26, 2006 at 5:42 PM

So, what are the odds that Churchill will end up at either Harvard or Berkley now that he is a free agent?

.

GT on June 26, 2006 at 5:51 PM

Wow…Chief Running Mouth is gone…like the buffalo.

BirdEye on June 26, 2006 at 6:13 PM

GT–given that he doesn’t even have a Ph.D., I’d say pretty small. Reed College, Hamilton College, or Evergreen College? Slim, but possible. I think everyone’s ready to wash their hands of him. Academia in general has taken a lot of hits over this guy. He’s like a lightning rod.

see-dubya on June 26, 2006 at 6:18 PM

NOW I can be happy because it came true

Maybe Churchill will become the academic expert on Air America then he can influce 1/100th of the audience he had in one forced freshman indoctrination class

Oh puleeze! If this freak had even an inkling of being an conservative, or worse yet, had held pro-America views he would have been history years ago.

How many voted to remove him? I’ll bet the decision was a squeaker. ;o)

DannoJyd on June 26, 2006 at 6:21 PM

Kinda sad that it takes this much to actually get fired. And he still has an appeals process at his disposal.

Theworldisnotenough on June 26, 2006 at 6:22 PM

A huge sigh of relief for my alma mater. With Churchill gone along with coach Barnett having stepped down, looks like the sun may begin to shine on campus.

Funny, although IIRC, this picture is the one with the Irish guy (or something like that) trying to pass himself as an American Indian.
Is this the one?

Best News of the Day!

easy87us on June 26, 2006 at 7:17 PM

Roger that, easy87us.

The worse, however, might just be that today is the day the Useless Nitwits begin their “conference” on gun-control.

Duty, Honor, Country

Buh-bye kemosabe!

Don’t let the teepee flap hit you in the ass on the way out.

Most appropriate pic for a story ever! EVER!

Bellicose Muse on June 26, 2006 at 7:52 PM

Rowane thanks for mentioning that, about that “conference” for those who think losing the right to wire money to our enemies is so terrible…
check out the right the UN is trying to take from us!

“Churchill…has vowed to sue the school if he was fired.”

He think if he Souix, that make him real Indian.

B Moe on June 26, 2006 at 8:10 PM

He in heap big trouble.

JammieWearingFool on June 26, 2006 at 8:14 PM

Because of his record in plagiarizing and inaccurate resume, he should apply to work for NY Times.

easy87us on June 26, 2006 at 8:36 PM

Rowane, do you mean UN? Has John Bolten p of them yet?

batperez,

I believe this comes from the Don’t Pollute campaign of the 70 where people threw trash from a car at his feet or he was canoeing and saw floating garbage on a lake. The psa always ended with him dropping one tear from his eye. Pretty darn sure it’s Iron Eyes Cody….

ScottG on June 26, 2006 at 9:14 PM

I remember the one on the canoe….give a hoot, don’t pollute…

man…I am old…

WC means toilet in England.

Perfect.

B Moe on June 26, 2006 at 9:33 PM

If I understood Michelle Malkin correctly, on the O’Reilly show tonight, he still has to be booted by a group of his peers. We don’t want to celebrate prematurely…

If he will, he can keep Cindy Sheehan company and Michael Moore can make a movie about them. Cannes needs a highlight for next year.

Entelechy on June 26, 2006 at 11:04 PM

Maybe they’ll give Churchill a job as an editor for the NY Times… hehehe

BillyKess on June 26, 2006 at 11:16 PM

oops, sorry, I just saw that was already said…

Sorry about that, easy87us :)

(Great Minds Think Alike)

BillyKess on June 26, 2006 at 11:17 PM

Hahaha…thanks …

easy87us on June 26, 2006 at 11:26 PM

Certainly good news that Chief Walking Eagle is about to take a hike.

Highplains on June 27, 2006 at 12:14 AM

I think WC will have a long and illustrious career speaking to the perpetually outraged. Look at Cindy Sheehan. She can’t afford to put a tombstone on her son’s grave, but she can jet all over the world getting kissy with Fidel and Hugo.

Ellen on June 27, 2006 at 5:17 AM

I think Churchill should sue. This is clearly discriminatory against Native Americans.

Oh. Wait a second. Oops.

Nevermind.

My God- a college administration with guts. Who’d a thunk it?

Abigail Adams on June 27, 2006 at 11:42 AM

I think the CU version of Goebbels will get a final review by his Peers (Other liberal anti-American Douche-Bag Professors) and they will get the final say.

I can see this dragging on for another Year, while they conduct their own interviews..and in the end they will vote overwhelmingly to keep the Fraud employed there.

havok on June 27, 2006 at 11:45 AM

I’m waiting for the ACLU to stir the pot on this one.
