Real Politics vs Idealism

Sometimes you have to bite the bullet on circumstances like this

But I hate that this would apply to Muktadar Al-Sadr (i know i misspelt it but I don't care)

The Al Reuters article betrays their concern over how badly thing are going . . . for THEIR antiwar position! It's time to rally the insurgent-loving "pacifists" so pour on the propaganda.

Hey, better yet where's Baghdad Bob? Bring him out of retirement (or hiding) to give us a little 'Truthout'!

[...] All of this leads me to wonder if everyone optimisticabout the fate of Iraq is really just plain naive, like the anti-war crowd would have you believe. This question makes this post by Mohammed from the excellent blog Iraq the Model important for everyone to read. As someone actually living in Iraq; something the anti-war people, who also refuse to listen anytime the troops report back positive, don’t; Mohammed provides valuable insight into the mood on the street in Iraq. While everything is not perfect, as evidenced by the fact that Prime Minister Maliki may have togive amnesty to some terrorists, the situation is not as bleak as the MSM and the left would have you believe: Baghdad looked tense today as the city witnessed the launch of the new massive security operation “Forward Together”. The feeling here ranges from anxiety to hope which I saw clear in the voice and looks of the people I met; in addition to the understandable anxiety that accompanies every new military operation I saw a lot about hope that this new operation may be able to stop or even reverse the deterioration of security in the capital. [...]

Haven't looked at the details but I'm guessing that the amnesty is aimed at those 'insurgents' who took money from the AQ types, went out and emptied the AK they'd been given in the general direction of some coalition forces far enough away they weren't likely to shoot back, dropped it and went home. The "haven't attacked civilians" should, if testable, weed out most of the ones who were in it for idealogical reasons.

They really don't have much choice but to give them a chance to fall in behind the new sheriff. If there's no chance to lay down arms and take part in society, why should they stop fighting at all? If it works, and everyone has an opportunity to prosper, discontent and the violence that comes with it will evaporate.

This is the lesser of 2 evils.

They live in a "shame society" so I don't know if that'll work, but if the Govt can sit down and talk peace, from a position of strength, muslim to muslim, then maybe it'll work. The new Iraqi Govt appears to be strong and the insurgents get to 'save face' ... save their faces from gettin' blown off by American Soldiers that is! You KNOW they're just lookin' to get themselves a birthday present!

But, we have about 1,300 years of islamic history that shows how they pretend to want peace talks while they regroup and rebuild their forces in preperation to attack. Maybe BOTH sides are doin' this to each other.

Maliki floods Baghdad with Iraqi troops to show what he can do to the enemy, them gives 'em the option to disarm and go home. After losing zarqawi (piss be upon him) and the subsequent raids that followed, maybe the sunni insurgents finally get it. Drop your weapons, go home and get a job. As for the foreign terrorists, there is only one way to deal with them. Just ask any U.S. Marine how do handle those punks. Falluja anyone?

I think Maliki was put in jail by Saddam and the Americans at one point, so he is no weenie. It looks to me like this guy means business on crushing the insurgents, and he intends to do what it takes. After all, the whole Iraq war is about flipping the country. Working to successfully flip some key problem people there may jusify the means.
