Former SS man builds shrine to Hitler — in Wisconsin

I use the word “former” loosely:
Kathy Heilbronner, assistant director of the Milwaukee Jewish Council for Community Relations, described Junker as a classic Holocaust denier. She said he chooses to ignore the ample evidence of the Holocaust.
Junker said he volunteered to join the German Waffen SS in 1940 and served in Russia, where the Germans worked to free Russians from communism. He came to the United States in 1955. He said he worked as a janitor in Chicago and bought 120 acres in Walworth County 43 years ago to farm.
What’s an SS apparatchik doing in America, you might ask? Good question. Presumably, he was admitted here under the Refugee Relief Act of 1953, section 14(a) of which says:
Sec. 14. (a) No visa shall be issued under this Act to any person who personally advocated or assisted in the persecution of any person or group of persons because of race, religion, or national origin.
Assuming for argument’s sake that pillaging the Russian countryside doesn’t constitute persecution based on national origin, self-professed membership in the SS presumably does. Which means either the admission officer who let this guy in fell down on the job or, more likely, Junker lied about his wartime activities.
And if he lied, he’s got himself a problem. Citizenship doesn’t save him: according to 8 U.S.C. 1451(a), the local U.S. Attorney has the power to bring denaturalization proceedings “on the ground that such order and certificate of naturalization were illegally procured or were procured by concealment of a material fact or by willful misrepresentation…” Then, once he’s denaturalized, you can deport his ass under 8 U.S.C. 1227(a)(4)(D), which refers to 8 U.S.C. 1182(a)(3)(E), which says:
Any alien who, during the period beginning on March 23, 1933, and ending on May 8, 1945, under the direction of, or in association with—
(I) the Nazi government of Germany,
(II) any government in any area occupied by the military forces of the Nazi government of Germany,
(III) any government established with the assistance or cooperation of the Nazi government of Germany, or
(IV) any government which was an ally of the Nazi government of Germany,
ordered, incited, assisted, or otherwise participated in the persecution of any person because of race, religion, national origin, or political opinion is inadmissible.
Emphasis mine. FYI, the DOJ has an office that deals with nothing but cases involving ex-Nazis. So why is this guy still here? If I had to guess, I’d guess it’s because they can’t locate a witness to testify to his acts of persecution. But, err, given that he admits to having been in the SS, isn’t he the witness? Even if you can’t put a gun in his hands, surely that fact alone establishes that he “assisted or otherwise participated” in persecution.
An SS shrine to Hitler in the U.S. Damn — I feel like CheChe’s daughter.

This is clearly all Bush’s fault.

I would like to say I’m surprised, but given our broken borders and other immigration and naturalization-related problems, I’m not surprised at all.

Of course, you ARE taking it for granted that this guy really WAS in the SS! He could be a liar as much as a nut case! That IS possible, I’d say.

I’d like to kick his aSS
Defector01 on June 14, 2006 at 11:48 PM
Do you really think if he was in the SS, he would call attention to himself?
I sense a neonazinutt. However, if it’s true…. shove him in an oven and turn on the gas.
Kini on June 14, 2006 at 11:52 PM
Do you really believe the city would approve his plan and permit to build a Hitler Shrine….?
Boo Freakn Hoo…

Well, there was a difference between the SS, and the Waffen SS. Waffens SS were straight army-like units (but not under the regular German General Staff) raised mostly from non-national Germans. These were not the SS troopers rounding up jews and stuff like that. I read the article in the Milwaukee Journal and it clearly stated Waffen SS, not SS.
Wikipedia’s entry is abit different my recollection…enough so that a bit more info about this guys actual unit is needed. Wikipedia does states that several Waffen SS units were involved with atrocities/war crimes (which I did know before reading the entry).

I don’t have a problem with it if it’s on his land as long as he’s not trying to convert others to kill in the name of Hitler or trying to destroy our land and our way of life. I take more issue with mosques.

“Daddy, how can there be Nazi sympathizers in America?”
Our lips trembled, and we broke down sobbing hysterically while I tried to comfort my daughter.
“I actually voted against this story, before I voted for it.”

If he really WAS an SS man, he will have a tattoo with his SS number in his left armpit. No denying that one. Tell him to lift his arm, and if the number is there, lift his ass out of the country and give him back to the Germans.

(playing devils advocate here)
Although the holocaust was a terrible chapter in history, does that mean that this individual does not have a first amendment right?
We have jumped up to defend Ann Coulters freedom of expression, why deny this man his, because we disagree with his ideology?
(Devils advocacy off)
Perhaps allowing him to speak his mind and build his shrine on his land will help educate future generations of the horrors that were done by Hitler and his minions. Evil does not fade away with memory. Forgetting evil only makes it stronger when it resurfaces.
I have noticed that some people here have started sounding a little like the KOS kids. Before some of you lop me head off think about it. We jump to defend our point of view, and then disregard others. Nothing is ever black and white. Granted, you can not have a completely open mind. I have tried that route and you end up being undecided and unable to take on any course of action. But this does not mean that we can not think of both sides of an issue. Alot of the liberal ideology is nonsensical, and can not be debated. (How do you refute poor logic to the illogical?)
But to disregard all of it simply because “the liberals are wrong” sounds an awful lot like “nothing Bush does is right because he is evil”.
Just my philosophical musings for this fine morning.

RolandHall: Absolutely. Is this fellow preaching hatred for all people who aren’t nazis? Is he encouraging acts of violence against non-nazis? Is he indoctrinating children to hate the non-nazis? How many nazi terrorists were on the 911 planes? Do nazis demand and receive copies of Mein Kampf when they are captured? Is he doing anything close to what the muslimes do?
This is a silly old fool who wants to make a shrine to honor a madman. The difference is that when someone destroys it-that will be fine. Try doing that to one of those disgusting mosques and see how fast you land in jail.
ecamorg on June 15, 2006 at 8:17 AM
There are city regulations to regulate signs, appearance of building, etc. Displaying Swastika or picture of Hitler in prominant locations may be considered inappropiate and be disapproved. The same local regulations could be applied advertisement of nudity or appearance of mosque.
If that guy built a shrine with no offensive external features, then this is none of our business.
Of course, local city council may deem it politically incorrect not to violate the First Amendment. They banned baby Jesus, didn’t they?

I knew an old timer in Nacogdoches that was a Nazi. He ran a German Restaurant there at the edge of town. He liked to get drunk and play old nazi records and sing along. We college students thought it was funny. One thing was for sure though, that Nazi propaganda really worked on him because he remained a loyal Nazi till the day he died.
Shmo on June 15, 2006 at 9:52 AM
Well, crap, at least it’s not a cross on a veteran’s war memorial or anything. That would be REALLY bad.
NTWR on June 15, 2006 at 9:55 AM
Didn’t all the old SS guys move to Chile and Argentina?
I sense a wannabe.
NTWR on June 15, 2006 at 9:56 AM
Wonder if the ACLU will say “it’s FREE SPEECH”? Maybe Jesse Jackson needs to involve himself in this, might get some more publicity in his shake down of Corporations.

How old is this guy??? PS a lot of ex-Nazis were allowed to come to the US post war, you’ve never heard of Von Braun?
honora on June 15, 2006 at 10:56 AM
He’s 87, honora. It says so right in the article.
Yeah, I’ve heard of Von Braun. Whether we should have dealt with him is highly debatable, but at least he helped put us on the moon. What’s this guy’s excuse?
Allahpundit on June 15, 2006 at 11:02 AM
hey, just bear with me for a moment here…what would happen if we let this whacko do whatever he wants?….I mean, we are supposed to all be free thinkers, freedom of religion and political thought, you know what I am talking about. See, here is where we all get crazy…total freedom does not mean you are free to do or say anything you goddamned well want to. This is just the exact thing we are all talking about. Just because we have the freedom of expression, does not mean we have to EXERCISE our freedom of expression….(something like that, anyway.) Can anyone make that a bit clearer….I am sometimes not as concise as I would like to be in my expression of thought.

Define offensive. Whose definition shall we use?
Again, I don’t have a problem with it although ecamorg gave a better definition.
Hank Williams Sr. sang a good lil song called “Mind Your Own Business”. If you mind your own business you’ll stay busy all the time.
Surely people have more to do with their time than to worry about an old man paying tribute to a fallen mass murderer. It is not offensive to me as sheeple praising a satanic pedophile [piss be upon him] and willing to murder in his name.
RolandHall on June 15, 2006 at 9:14 PM
Simple. Kick his ass out!
gary on June 15, 2006 at 9:47 PM
Hey if someone doesn’t build one, how are you ever going to be able to tell your kids the story of the jerk who built a monument to idiots!
Dread Pirate Roberts VI on June 16, 2006 at 9:54 AM
I can’t help but think giving this guy publicity is probably not the best idea. And at 87 (thanks AP), he’ll be long dead before this is settled in court. I hope Jon Stewart gets an interview of this guy for his show.
