Coultermania! NYT hops aboard the gravy train

posted at 11:11 pm on June 11, 2006 by Allahpundit

Got to get getting while the getting’s good. Big finish:

All manner of televised talkfests, including “Today,” welcome Ms. Coulter’s pirate sensibilities back aboard whenever she has something to peddle, in part because seeing hate-speech pop out of a blonde who knows her way around a black cocktail dress makes for compelling viewing.

Without the total package, Ms. Coulter would be just one more nut living in Mom’s basement. You can accuse her of cynicism all you want, but the fact that she is one of the leading political writers of our age says something about the rest of us.

Click the link and note the cutesy-poo “equations.” Says a lot about how stale the debate over Coulter has become that the Times felt it had to spice this thing up with graphics. Did you know that AC spouts outrageous nonsense partly to sell books? You did? Okay, but have you seen that idea expressed in mathematical form? Using clip art?

The last remaining semi-interesting subset of the media Coulterkampf is figuring out how much of what she says is sincerely felt. The Guardian has a long profile of AC tonight that tries to answer that question. I offer you this:

‘I suppose the question that often comes up is, does she really believe these things or does she say them for effect?’ says Mickey Kaus. ‘And I’ve come to think she really believes them. She says the same things in private. They are as sincere as any beliefs any of us have.’

Meanwhile, at a cartoonist convention, NPR host Steve Simon bemoans the fierce partisanship that marks modern American politics, then jokes that the thought of Coulter being led away in chains to prison is “attractive.” Ahem.

Ann’s next book – Mein Coulter Kampf

Entelechy on June 11, 2006 at 11:23 PM

The more the Left complains, the more books she sells, the happier we all are. Ann is great in my not quite humble opinion.

Snake307 on June 11, 2006 at 11:34 PM

If you peel away her often offensive bombast, Coulter’s logic is sound. The problem is that her outrageous rhetoric gets in the way of the real message, becoming an issue in and of itself.

Pretty darned funny how Coulter saying the truth is “hate speech” but bad mouthing this Nation and the President of the United States of America is “free speech” in the minds of liberal human debris.

THIS OPED COMES FROM THE MAJOR FISH WRAP IN MADISON WI. SEEMS TO PROVE ANN COULTER EXACTLY RIGHT.

Rush Limbaugh Attacks Congressman Murtha
Bill Wineke
bwineke@madison.com
Rush Limbaugh has it in for Congressman John Murtha, who opposes our continued occupation of Iraq.
“Let me ask you a quesstion. Have you ever heard Jack Murtha criticize any of our enemies with the language he uses to describe our own military?” Limbaugh asked during his June 1 broadcast.
That was the concluding line of a train of thought that linked Murtha to Limbaugh’s concept of the left, essentially as a traitor:
“Make no mistake, that’s their objective (to tear down the country). The people you’re talking about are trying to change the fabric of this country. There is a blame-America crowd. There’s a hate-America crowd and their mostly lefitists, a combination of socialists and quasi-communists, multiculturalists and they’re just losers in life. They’re lost souls. They are looking fo rmeaning and they’ve got themselves into certain positions of power, such as education, where predominantly most of them reside now. . .”
Read something like that and you might think Rush Limbaugh was a patriot and a hero.
He and Murtha (and me, for that matter) all came of age during the Vietnam War. Limbaugh managed to avoid service. Murtha enlisted in the Marines and earned two Purple Hearts serving our country.
At some point, won’t Limbaugh’s listeners ever get sick of hearing him slander authentic heroes?

God is this guy a major idiot

A big difference between the L and the R is that the L wants to stifle and chain dissenting opinions. The R just likes to point and laugh at the Ls blathering.Oh, and the Rs babes are so much hotter.

The LEFT CARTEL SCRIBBLER THUGS infesting the nodes of the ETHICAL ABSTRACTIONS communication channels, which deliver “INFORMATION” to the United States Citizenry (and other voters), have long since rejected reasoned discourse. These Mountebanke have created a lexicon of INCANTATIONS and MALEDICTIONS, which serve well enough the faux sophisticates, who have learned to parrot these accusations of “RACISM” and “BOURGEOIS THOUGHT-CRIME”, as they shiver with pleasure at the elegance of their own pure feelings. What dull inner lives they lead in bodies that are effectively untenanted! There is nobody home behind their eyes. After proclaiming the Death Of GOD, they now invoke the political superstitions of the 19th Century, seeking the establishment of a HELL ON EARTH, a punishment that they have defined away in the Realm of OUR LORD’S Hereafter. Shame contends with guilt in their minds, but only sub-consciously. Despair is their destination.

Does anyone actually read the NYT anymore other than parakeets in their cages?

GT on June 12, 2006 at 12:15 AM

Never, never, never should we be forced to wear burkas and dishdashas. Let’s hope we maintain the courage to fight against that, even if Michael Moore and his ilk will be protected.

For half a day, however, it would be fun to be a fly observing the treatment the Left would get from the jihadis. They abhor nothing more than the Left’s philosophy and lifestyle.

For some reason the Left believes that they would be spared, just because they are so nuanced and multicultured; and understanding and tolerant, don’t forget. Oh, and nuanced.

From the paper which gave us Walter Duranty and Harold Denny’s love affair with Stalin, Herbert Matthew’s infatuation with Fidel Castro and Anthony Lewis’ serenade to Pol Pot.

Hey Arthur Jr, see your family flagship stock is sinking like the Titanic. You better do something fast Pinch or no cupcakes for you in the Hampies this August.

Don’t care what anyone says about Ms. Coulter. The fact is that after discussing how horrible she is, they were actually debating her (accurate) point that using trajedy victims to prove a point is unethical and destroys dialogue. On CNN!!! Yes, on CNN. Her painful statements have reaped a real reward. Actual discussion of this unsavory practice.

Kevin M on June 12, 2006 at 2:27 AM

It all boils down to -

The left can dish it out, but can’t take it.

I like the analogy, “Truth isn’t served with Novocain”

Over the top, sure, but I LIKE IT!

Kini on June 12, 2006 at 3:02 AM

The NY Times article about her appears to be in the business section. Sunday’s business section had an article on body odor in the workplace. No wonder Times readers don’t know much about the economy.

Maybe she’ll let me set up a liberal celebrity target range in her back yard…

If you think about it, Ann Coulter’s words (with which I happen to entirely agree) aren’t remotely as vile as the vitriol that spews from the innards of the likes of the leaders of the left. People like Howard Dean, Al Franken, Ted Kennedy, John Murtha, John Kerry, Nancy Pelosi and others of that ilk.

Ann speaks the truth — and the left cannot deal with truth!

ForYourEdification on June 12, 2006 at 7:33 AM

madcity and Richard Davis:

Your post proves the point that liberals ARE an angry, writhing lot. Your writings reek from the sarcasm and hate that has permeated the liberal left and blinds it from reality. People like Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh are EXPOSING the left, and more power to them!

Counter to your mocking ode, when I exhale, it is a sigh of relief that “Liberals Anonymous” is not in charge.

Murtha’s medals go way beyond “two Purple Hearts, incidentally.” But since when does that entitle the receiver to vilify and defame his country or its troops in time of war? “Authentic” heroes” do not slander their country’s troops or armed forces after they are discharged; they stand by them. Murtha and Kerry are “Authentic heroes?”

BAH, HUMBUG!

ForYourEdification on June 12, 2006 at 7:55 AM

The Times posits that when the lumpen masses are buying Ann’s book (as opposed to their newspapers) that something must be gravely wrong with our society.

How’s that for haughty elitism?

And since when did the NY Times become a qualified expert on profit-making?

CaptiousNut on June 12, 2006 at 8:08 AM

By some of the comments left, I feel maybe you missed the gist of my post which was to point out how the Left defends againts its critics.
I agree with Ann Coulter and Rush.
Bill Wineke (papers editor)is the idiot.

Madcity on June 12, 2006 at 8:49 AM

Thanks GT, now I understand why parakeets are so stupid! They read the NYT on the bottom of their cage! DUH!

Dread Pirate Roberts VI on June 12, 2006 at 8:58 AM

ForYouEdification…”Your post proves the point that liberals ARE an angry, writhing lot. ”

Hm, may I add pyschotic, deranged, violent, and malicious mobs? Would I be hurting their delicate, passionate, loving little liberal heart for telling the truth?

easy87us on June 12, 2006 at 11:20 AM

Madcity, why are you so stupid to fall into Ann’s trap again?

You wrote “He and Murtha (and me, for that matter) all came of age during the Vietnam War. Limbaugh managed to avoid service. Murtha enlisted in the Marines and earned two Purple Hearts serving our country.”

This is the exact BS Ann is telling you that the liberals are doing. You are using the war record as a shield for Murtha as if he is all holy that Rush and no one without a war record can criticize him!

Hey dude, you know who designed and built those F16s that blew Al baby till thy kingdom come? They probably have no war record.

How about doctors and fire fighters and policemen?

Do you know those Americans that keep the street clean of garbage everyday probably also have no war record and no purple hearts?

So, have they earned the right to criticize Murtha?

See, you have been intoxicated by the liberal toxin and don’t even realize it. I recommend you to join the Liberal Anon. to rid the toxin in your body so you won’t fall prey to Ann Coulter again.

easy87us on June 12, 2006 at 11:35 AM

This “shield” mentalia is predominantly found in the liberal sector. I have told you guys the origin of this mental toxin. It was born out of the Communist Manifesto. It is nothing but CLASS RANKING!

In communist country, they rank people, from color red to color black! The purer the communist, the redder he is,like red hot KFC!

In their ranking system, the communist members with decorations/war records ranked highest!

War records of non-communist members don’t worth a sh#t.

Now you see why they so focus on war records!

Scum is usually originated from scum bucket.

easy87us on June 12, 2006 at 11:49 AM

The Left became unhinged over “Godless” not because of its substance or lack thereof. No, Coulter called them on another attempt to stifle free speech via the use of “victims” to make outrageous and indefensible claims.

The Jersey Girls were especially atrocious examples. While I don’t consider myself a Coulter fan, I applaud the attention she has drawn to this cheap left-wing tactic. This strategy soon will join the kneejerk cries of “racism” among the Left’s self-parodying implosion.

godhelpUSA on June 12, 2006 at 12:12 PM

Strange that in all the Ann Coulter interviews of late, debates, discussions, reviews, bloggs, commentary, etc. no one hardly talks about the essence of her book “Godless”.

It is completeley overshadowed by the Jersey chicks’ mini-statement.

Let’s make an effort to analyze and comment on the rest of the book. It might have other valuable points to ponder, such that they shouldn’t be lost – lest the Left gets away with being “Godful”.

Entelechy on June 12, 2006 at 12:31 PM

One of the Left’s favorite playbook tactics has become a recurring theme in its response to Ann’s latest book. When he cannot debate the substance of an argument, the typical leftist resorts to the tired criticism that the proponent of the argument really doesn’t believe her own rhetoric but says it only for shock value to sell more books. That is the entire theme of David Carr’s NYT “review” as well as a number of leftist appearances on television over the weekend.
I distictly recall the same tactic being used against Rush Limbaugh more than 15 years ago. Dozens of leftist commentators stated with certainty that they know the “real” Rush and he doesn’t believe his message; rather, he found the “formula” for selling a million books and attracting 20 million listeners a day to his radio show. After all, Rush is nothing but an entertainer the leftists opined. All the while, the liberals have searched for 15 years to find someone comparable to Rush.
This weekend, the intellectual vapid Lawrence O’Donnell called Ann Coulter’s arguments “schtik,” simply a script replete with inflammatory rhetoric that she doesn’t really believe. Keep doing what you’re doing, Ann, you are in great company as the target of that accusation.

csjd on June 12, 2006 at 12:47 PM

I wonder if Coulter plans to send a thank you note to the New York Slimes for helping her sell another hundred thousand copies?

Which is another way of repeating my most frequently asked questions: are librulz just plain stupid?

I’m beginning to think Karl Rove may be Coulter’s literary agent. With the possible recent exception of Dan Brown, I can’t think of another author who has managed to drum up more free publicity for their work.

And the best part is – the people that HATE her are the ones working so damn hard to help her sell her books. They’re also the ones working hardest to make her look right about just about everything.

At this point, I wouldn’t care if I disagreed with every damn thing Coulter said – I’d still love her just for pissing off the left so royally.

I say Dick Cheney retires and President Bush appoints Coulter as sitting Vice President. That would be extremely schadenfreudilicious.

Professor Blather on June 12, 2006 at 1:31 PM

Wouldn’t it be great if this book was made into a movie? I can visualize this as a comedy docu-drama dripping with a sarcastic Ann Coulter narrative. If this had been a liberal book with as much hoopla surrounding it, the movie rights would have already been sold for million$.

Perchant on June 12, 2006 at 1:59 PM

Ann is sharp. Libs are dull. She has focus, they are unfocused. She sheds light, they run from light. She speaks the truth, they have Hillary.

THEY SHOULD SHOW THE PLANES HITTING THE TOWERS EVERYDAY.

The things Ann says doesn’t get any Troops killed.

I’m glad Ann exposed the Witches of New Jersey…
