Coultermania! 20 House Dems sign letter to Ann

posted at 1:52 pm on June 10, 2006 by Allahpundit

They’re deeply concerned.

The lawmakers signed a letter drafted by Rep. Steve Israel (D-Huntington) demanding that the conservative commentator apologize for saying in her new book that widows of some 9/11 victims are “enjoying” their husbands’ deaths. The book refers to the four New Jersey women as “the witches of East Brunswick.”

“Their personal loss should never be minimized, especially in such a cold and callous way as you attack these victims in your book,” Israel wrote.

As of Friday afternoon, Israel had collected the signatures of 19 House colleagues…

No Republicans had signed the letter, even though Israel invited all members of Congress from the tristate area to do so.

Coulter sells a few more books, the pols earn a few more votes, the Jersey Girls add a few more points to their Q Scores, and Hot Air banks a few more hits in the ol’ SiteMeter. Long may you run, Steve Israel.

Let me know when the Rahm Emmanuel silence-equals-consent brigades finally get around to Michael “Don’t bomb the blue states, Osama” Moore.

Update:

Update: Is Coulter a “lunatic” or a pornographer? Or both?

So, remember when AC talked about how you’re not allowed to speak out against the infallible grieving/crusading widows?

She must be psychic.

Pablo on June 10, 2006 at 1:58 PM

Hehehe…. Ann couldn’t ask for better publicity. Bless their little ‘ol Democrat hearts.

GT on June 10, 2006 at 1:58 PM

How daft are these guys for absolutely
proving her point and yet allowing Murtha and all his ilk to run free and unfettered? God I love that woman!!!

bbz123 on June 10, 2006 at 2:06 PM

Coulter is the exact opposite of the victimcrats she wrote about. It’s equally as wrong NOT to criticize her as it is to criticize the special ones.

Perchant on June 10, 2006 at 2:10 PM

The more the libs rant on the more people become aware of Ann C and, the more books she sells. The free publicity from the libs expands the discussen. Most people have forgotten about the “Jersery girls” and what there all about, blame Bush for 9-11. It seems very obvious that the girls put politics first, and the death of their husbands they see as a vehicle for the defeat of their enemy the conservatives.

birdman on June 10, 2006 at 2:14 PM

863 customer “reviews” and counting? Amazon should turn that feature off for Coulter’s book as its become a forum/poll and not a collection of reviews.

GPE on June 10, 2006 at 2:18 PM

This is too good to be true. All this validates what she wrote. You can not reply to these Jersey millionaires without being chastised. Maybe the 20 nincompoops should try to change the 1st amendment instead of getting their panties in a knot.

Wade on June 10, 2006 at 2:19 PM

The Dems are counting on the fact that the MSM have taken the quote out of context (and will continue to). Only those that actually read the entire statement will know that Ann is correct and that these “ultra maroons” are proving her point.

MCPO Airdale on June 10, 2006 at 2:21 PM

Dont these guys have more important things to do??

Like… oh… Secure my border?
Get energy under control?
Get spending under control?
Kick that Guy out who took a bribe?

But nooo… they take their time drafting a letter to a Citizen who has just used her freedom of Speech to say somthing they don’t like….

Hmmm… if they sign this as Representatives, is this an abuse of authority?

Romeo13 on June 10, 2006 at 2:28 PM

Every time she goes on TV to argue this, she wins, because the left’s arguements aren’t arguements as much as they are examples of what Ann’s talking about.

ZRyan on June 10, 2006 at 2:28 PM

ZRyan: What you said. The left will attack the messenger not the message; always!!!

birdman on June 10, 2006 at 2:32 PM

Simply unbelieveable. I know it’s been mentioned here several times already but I can’t believe these so-called “representatives” are actually proving her point for her …….. again …… and again ……. and again.

What you see is how the left responds when for once they’re actually called out for their actions and the recipient of their attacks doesn’t back down. They’re so used to people backing off they don’t realize they’re proving her point. This is soooooo good to see. Utter confusion on the left’s part.

darwin on June 10, 2006 at 2:51 PM

when will they try to pass a bill that will prevent Coulter from speaking disparagingly to anyone?
Thjats what it looks liek they want to do. If they had any sense they would have said that they disagreed about what she said, and how she said it. But that she has the freedom to say what she wants.

I sweer, a bunch of polticians send a pettition to me to apoloagise for something I said and I would go on the air to call them a bunch of bastards, and promptly ignore them.

Wyrd on June 10, 2006 at 2:54 PM

Maybe these Dhimicraps can set aside about 5 minutes to write Ward Churchill a letter too. Oh wait I forgot.. Freedom of Speech only covers Anti-American speech that the communist democrats agree with..

havok on June 10, 2006 at 3:02 PM

Good point havoc. I don’t seem to remember any hysterics when Ward “Fake Indian” Churchill sprayed his venom on the families of 9-11 victims.

darwin on June 10, 2006 at 3:07 PM

There is blissfully little “new tone” in Ann’s truth-telling. She’s a leader. Is anyone in the White House paying attention?

Halley on June 10, 2006 at 3:07 PM

I am still in a fog of afternoon sleep here but did I miss the letter that was drafted by these same tiny minded idiots to request Ward Churchill’s apology for his remarks about the ‘litte eichmans’ that died in the WTC. Anyone….care to publish it…can’t find it…nevermind then!!!!
HYPOCRITICAL DONKEY REAR ENDS…..VOTE THEM ALL OUT NOW!!!!!

Sandys Beach on June 10, 2006 at 3:08 PM

Democrats have to find out the most obvious way to suffocate freedom of speech!

Great! What a suicidal move.

May I ask again…Do we private citizens have the right to express our feeling without 19 congressmen pressure us to shut up?

easy87us on June 10, 2006 at 3:21 PM

I never do understand why Democrat politicians let themselves get drawn into these stupid squabbles with unelected conservative commentators. It goes all the way back to Rush Limbaugh’s heyday at the beginning of the Clinton Administration, when Clinton and wife felt the need to take on Limbaugh themselves.

I can’t recall the last time a Republican took on a liberal talking head like this, whether it was over “Screw ‘Em” or the thousand and one 9/11 conspiracy theories that are easily debunked should any of them wish to waste their breath.

Mark V. on June 10, 2006 at 3:21 PM

This is great material for 2006 campaign!

GOP, Ann Coutler has delivered to you the best gift you can have for the coming election. Isn’t she sweet????

DEMOCRATS AGAINST FREEDOM OF SPEECH!

Hm…let us recollect some of Black Panthers’ famous saying…..where were these Democrats then?

easy87us on June 10, 2006 at 3:24 PM

Ya know… this tendency by the left (and also by the UN, if you’ve been paying attention to the arrogance of the UN’s second in command), to stifle and oppress American’s rights to free speech is disturbing.

Kinda feels like a bit of pre-sharia conditioning, doesn’t it?

techno_barbarian on June 10, 2006 at 3:32 PM

I wonder if a letter to these selfsame 19 Democratic congressment asking them to apologize for being useless human beings would be answered? Probably not.

At least Ann is earning her $3,500,000 book advance, which is more than I can say about these idiot congressmen earning their $160,000 salaries.

clyde on June 10, 2006 at 3:34 PM

After November, many of them will be unemployed.

This letter will be their dead spell. The Independents now finally have the opportunity to see the real nature of those liberal Democrats. They should be alarm to the fact that these liberal thugs have no idea of what Freedom of Speech is all about.

If Ann would not apologoze, than what would they do? Put her on a stick and burn her?

easy87us on June 10, 2006 at 3:42 PM

I agree, this dunder-headed move needs to be told to all .

bbz123 on June 10, 2006 at 3:55 PM

Link to Foxnews.com, video of Ann on Hannity and whats his name, entitled, “Fighting Back”. “The Jersey Girls” were invited on the show but declined, they issued a statement which reads in part. “It is in honer and memory, that we will once again refocus the Nation’s attention to the real issues at hand: Our lack of security, leadership and progress in the five years since 9/11″. The “Jersey Girls” 6-6-06. A left-wing hack named Laura Shwartz debated Ann. When asked by Sean if she had read “Godless” she stated, she “read most of the chapter(concerning the Jersey girls) in Borders”, (of course where else), but that she “refused to buy the book” (of course). When Shwartz was asked by Sean if Cindy Sheehan was open to criticisim for the remarks about GW, like calling him Hitler, terrorist and a murderer; again attack the messenger not the message, Shwartz stated that Sheenhan “was open to attacks from all sides of the political spectrum”. Shwartz then goes on to say that the Jersey girls are above criticisim. I’m confused! Ann shot back “you have just proved my point”, end of story. Colmes of course, “towed the party line”. If you don’t agree with the left shut up. It’s off to the Gulag with us. If I were Sean I would have asked Laura Sharwtz if she was in Borders looking to pick up men.

birdman on June 10, 2006 at 4:00 PM

Simply incredible. Since when has any portion of Congress ever written a letter demanding that a citizen apologize. All these “investigations” going on should be redirected to investigations for Treason of Murtha, Hillary, Churchill, Raines, the paid officer who won’t serve, Dan Rather. Worse has been said about this country by Chris Matthews, Michael Moore, Jerry Springer, the Pelosi/Boxer crowd. Why don’t they get a letter from Congress.

The problem is we don’t have a critical mass of educated people to do an end around the lib/Dems and Media. Most lawyers and media people are left leaning to a reality challenged degree that borders on psychotic.

We have to get the message out, and Ann knows that the psychotic left or the mushy/stuporous middle grounders are absolutely deaf to civilized discourse. The “edge” in Ann’s style is uncomfortable, but it must be there to be heard. That is OK as long as the message remains rationale and true, unlike the hysterical discourse from the other side.

Stay the course people. Stay sharp Ann. Keep it up George, but listen carefully to your advisors and your people about the borders.

CountryDoc on June 10, 2006 at 4:03 PM

This provides Ann with an entire new chapter for her new book. Another one can be on Murtha alone.

How blessed this girl is with talent and with her ‘enemies’.

Entelechy on June 10, 2006 at 4:23 PM

Last time I looked Ann’s book was number 1 on Amazaon.com

and to people who do not like her point of view I suggest that they do not buy the book….that is american…

robo on June 10, 2006 at 4:29 PM

Hey, Ann, here’s MY “signature” telling those libs to stick their demand where the sun don’t shine!

ForYourEdification on June 10, 2006 at 4:47 PM

Would Ann get any mention on MSM if she was not outrageous and extreme? I think not. She is very smart in being on the edge as everyone covers it and she gets mentioned. She knew that the Jersey girls comments would be attacked by the media, and therefor is her brilliance, as they got trapped into proving Ann’s point. You could see it was a trap when Matt Laue started on her and she said “See you are getting testy with me”. Ann is the bomb. Was funny as hell when Ann asked “Where is Katie”? LOL

Wade on June 10, 2006 at 4:54 PM

The Democrats have decided to run against Ann Coulter.

Brilliant strategery.

JammieWearingFool on June 10, 2006 at 5:21 PM

My comment ended up being too lengthy to be considered a comment, so I made it a post.

Snippet:

Is our Congress so out of touch with, you know, reality-based reality that they believe it appropriate and worth the time to issue what measures up to a demand for censorship? “Apology,” my ass. Coming from Congress, such a demand carries a far greater implication of intimidation than a similar letter from, say, the local cub scout troop.

http://weblog.javazen.com/?p=152

GPE on June 10, 2006 at 5:28 PM

I don’t agree with how she wrote the passage though her general point was good. Her comment about the husbands divocring them and the widows posing for playboy are real pathetic low blows and completely uncalled for. This letter to Ann is ridiculous as well, get the ACLU on the case for trying to censor Ann’s freedom of speech.

Defector01 on June 10, 2006 at 5:29 PM

Now THAT would be a match made in heaven: Ann Coulter represented in a lawsuit by the ACLU. HAHAHAHAHAHAH

Wow.

Just the thought makes me want to buy tickets. The ACLU, of course, would have second chair.

clyde on June 10, 2006 at 6:03 PM

How about the two assemblymen/women/its/things that want to ban “Godless” here in Jersey; and the left-wing kooks call us Nazis. I think I will start my own pettion to ban Jon Corzine and the whole left-wing kook party. I LOVE YOU ANN KEEP ON TRUCKING!!! XXXX000XXXX0000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

birdman on June 10, 2006 at 6:25 PM

I have two autographed copies of her last book, i want to wear them like earmuffa and walk through downtown San Francisco singing ” America”.

bbz123 on June 10, 2006 at 6:47 PM

Just like on Popeye when Cole Oyl says, “YOU OWE ME AN APOLOGY”.

NRA4Freedom on June 10, 2006 at 6:49 PM

Correct me if I’m wrong, but…isn’t it Matt Lauer who cherry-picked the “Jersey Girls” reference out of Coulter’s book in the first place?? And isn’t it that interview that ignited this whole made-for-MSM “controversy?” I only saw snippets of the Lauer interview, but I highly doubt that Coulter would’ve said she only wanted to discuss the “Jersey Girls” reference. Furthermore, having read several of her books (all excellent, by the way), I doubt that the JG reference was the only provocative one in a 320-page book. Therefore, it would appear to me that the 20 idiots in Congress are reacting to a controversy that was created by the MSM. Oooh, SCORE!!!!

Fly_in_Ointment on June 10, 2006 at 6:50 PM

Fly a lot of truth in what you say and to think, we have Matt Lauer to thank. He is so lame…

Wade on June 10, 2006 at 7:01 PM

Anne is dead on about those phony “Jersey Girls”. Let Hillary and her minions try to neutralize Anne. Just won’t happen. I don’t buy Anne’s books because I think the exact same as her. If my IQ was 30 points higher I could ghost write them

dennisw on June 10, 2006 at 7:03 PM

I don’t remember any of these twits in Congress going gaga demanding a letter of apology from Al “I need new glasses” Franken when he said VP Cheney should be executed for treason. Oh wait, I forgot, Cheney’s not a “victim” or a democrat. Sorry, my bad.

darwin on June 10, 2006 at 7:03 PM

Once again the Dems have taken upon themselves to enter a battle they cannot win, completely unarmed. This is why they usually don’t have a plan other than anything in opposition to the Republican one. At best, they prove their opponents point while violating her free speech in the process. You just can’t write this kind of stuff.

Ann is the man!

RolandHall on June 10, 2006 at 7:23 PM

Ponder this SAT math problem:

If a letter of protest from 20 liberal congressional New York morons (sorry for the redundancy) will help sell 30,000 books for Ann Coulter, how many liberal congressional New York morons would have to sign to help sell a million books?

The more these fools doth protest, the more they help.

ForYourEdification on June 10, 2006 at 7:44 PM

Rush has over 20 million people a week listening, Michelle’s Web Site is one of the most visited in the “world”, Ann’s books sell in the millions and her personal appearances are booked for years to come, O’Reiley and Hannity the same thing. Allot of people are spending allot of money to hear what these people have to say because they reflect the overall majority of American’s opinions and beliefs. To see the left going apoplectic over Ann’s book is a huge smile!

One thing I will say in favor of the Dems. At least some of them have the balls (however misplaced) to circulate a petition over comments in a book they find offensive. When Michael Osama Bin Moore produced a movie claiming the President of The United States knew of the 9/11 attacks in advance and did nothing, I saw zero petitions circulated by the Republicans demanding an apology.

Probably the same Republicans who after receiving millions of letters, faxes, bricks etc. passed the immigration bill anyway.

repvoter on June 10, 2006 at 7:50 PM

repvoter,
we believe in freedom of speech including the garbage that we don’t agree with
they don’t and they haven’t for a long time
I know, I used to hate coulter & rush and everyone else thinking they were nazis and ignoramuses and then I red/listened to them and i’m changed. I hate what Moore says but I’ll fight to the death to let him make an ass out of himself.

the biggest proponent of the freedom of speech is s/he who would fight to defend the speech that s/he would spend their lives arguing against

Defector01 on June 10, 2006 at 8:18 PM

I don’t agree with Dixie Chicks,Sean Penn, Cindy Sheehan, Alan Colm, Barbra Striesand, Al Franken, and that NOTORIOUS JUAN WILLIAMS.

But never have I have the desire to ask them to apologize.

Congressmen ????? Holy cow, I wonder whether they are violating the consititution for sending a signed letter to censor a private citizen for speaking her mind!

easy87us on June 10, 2006 at 9:47 PM

Ann Coulter, Rocks !!!
I know she rips the heads off the libs and takes names.
Stand strong Ann!!!
Let them have it with both barrels..
Hey criminal congress freaks take that letter that you sent to Ann and shove it where the sun don’t shine..
Write me one and i’ll personally will place it there…

alyce on June 11, 2006 at 1:13 AM

easy87us,

I had the same thought about our esteemed Congressmorons. They do submit to an oath to uphold the Constitution and the laws of the United States. By asking by letter that Coulter apologize for her comments (like she would ever do that, anyway), they may not violate the Constitution, per se, but they certainly violate its spirit.

Is there a link to the letter itself, or do we know which idiots signed the letter? I would love to send them a letter of my own…

Fly_in_Ointment on June 11, 2006 at 1:16 AM

Free speech is only for Democrats.

FYI – Ann will be on Drudge’s Radio Show tonight.

Per her website as part if her bok tour she is scheduled from 10:30 – 11:30 pm EST

http://www.anncoulter.com/welcome.html
(see schedule on right side of page)

ordi on June 11, 2006 at 7:11 AM

Man I write my congressman and all I get is a form letter back. I guess I will have write an entire book and maybe I too can get a letter signed by 20 of them.
BTW that is almost as many Democrats who supported Social Security Reform and probably just like that bill they haven’t this book either. But hey they “feel” good and that is all that really counts.

LakeRuins on June 11, 2006 at 7:21 AM

Free speech for all (except us problematic Conservatives)!

horsepower_1st on June 11, 2006 at 9:12 AM

Twenty Dems sign a letter condemning Ann. New Jersy Dems want Ann’s book(s) taken off the shelves of book stores. Liberal Talking Heads are sputtering and stammering. Yet ‘Godless’ is still at #1 at Amazon. Ans will be, well into the summer. Sounds about par for the course.

The Left’s reaction to Ms. Coulter’s books is quite reminiscent of Buhddist Monks setting themselves afire outside the US Embassy in Saigon during Vietnam. It only works well (if at all) ONCE!

After the first twenty or thirty… Who cares?

The Dems had better wise up (What am I thinking?!!!) or they’re in for another terrible shellacking come November!

Tongue firmly in cheek.

Jack.

Jack Deth on June 11, 2006 at 10:24 AM

Asked my 10 year old daughter with a love of politics as well as her two older sisters who have read Slander and Treason – to sum up Ann’s behavior as we watched in amazment the Coulter interview – even way over here in the middle east

Here was their reply – bumper sticker format

Ann Rules – Jersey Girls drool

EricPWJohnson on June 11, 2006 at 11:13 AM

It is so “nice” that “outraged” Democratic congressman sent a letter to Ann Coulter. Did William Jefferson and Cynthia McKinney also sign the letter?

MaiDee on June 11, 2006 at 11:14 AM

I don’t recall any house republicans signing a letter to Michael friggin Moore.

gary on June 11, 2006 at 1:52 PM

Hmmmmmm …… Ann really must have rattled the libs. Only one thing gets ‘em this rattled, the truth. Is anyone else as sick as I am of hearing “hate monger, hate filled, blah blah, blah”?? She’s really a “truth monger”.

darwin on June 11, 2006 at 2:47 PM

MY QUESTION….

DID ANN COULTER JUST MAKE HISTORY???

Has there been any private citizen getting the same treatment from 20 congressmen?

WOW! This is huge. Ann Coulter made HISTORY and she is definitely in the history book if this is the first case.

If she launch a law suit to demand the congressmen to withdraw the letter and apologize, then she may enter the realm of constitutional litigation and may go all the way to the Supreme Court!

Are you listening,ANN???? Set up a fund for it. this is a meaningful project!

easy87us on June 11, 2006 at 2:49 PM

Hillary must be green with envy with all the publicity she is getting. Gad, would she, Ann, ever make a kick-ass president!! And she wouldn’t put up with all this leftist treason stuff. She would probably be impeached within the first year but it would be magnificent!!

docdave on June 11, 2006 at 3:25 PM

Now two New jersey assemblywomen are calling on Jersey merchants to ban her book. Is this what the democrats consider freedom of speech?

http://www.sweetness-light.com/

darwin on June 11, 2006 at 5:21 PM

Would those 20 Dems love to have Ann Coulter come to speak in their districts, just to get their electorate base riled up and active before the elections? Yes they would! For those of you keeping score: Ann-200,000,000 to Democrats-0. She doesn’t even need heels to stand taller than they do.

Doug on June 11, 2006 at 5:25 PM

Hillary should have kept her mouth shut to start with.
Opening her mouth would not change the conservative base. All she did was to promote ANN’s book. And That is bad for the liberals.

Those who have never read Ann’s books or don’t care about conservatism may just join our camp after reading Ann’s book. They will find her reasoning refreshing, blunt at times, but accurate like a surgeon.

This is the best we can ask for. I tell you, once you have become a liberal you seem to lose 30% of your IQ overnight!

easy87us on June 11, 2006 at 6:57 PM

I am almost finished with her book.
So far her “barbs” are not as pointed as Al Frankens were in “liers”
Even on the subjects I do not agree with Ann on I concede to her argument. She outlines her position quite nicely, and backs it up with actual data.

Definatly a good book

Wyrd on June 12, 2006 at 8:21 AM

Do we have a list of these loser dhimocrats?? We could probably call their offices asking about thie Free Speech stance, but more than likely they are preparing to go the Al-Zawquari Funeral to praise a hero of theirs.
