Infiltrating Yearly Kos: “No, no, no, don’t call them a Nazi”

You wouldn’t think it’d be hard getting people to go on record at a seminar on how to talk to the media. No dice, says Byron York.

Our guy was there too, though. And he did get them to talk on the record. Proceed.

*

I’m at the second training session, and I clarified the rules with Jennifer Palmieri of CAP, told her I was writing for a blog called Hotair, and she said that while the discussion was on background, I could quote her.

I don’t want to bother the people who are now doing the practice interviews–in fact I felt sufficiently voyeuristic that I went and got a “press” badge–but one bit of discussion illustrated a lot of what I’ve seen today–the impact of the wild, untamed nutroots with the center-left political establishment.

We were discussing the general pitfalls of shows like Hannity and Colmes, and one trainee pundit spoke up to volunteer that leftist guests “need to have more humor on these shows.” Hmm, I thought. They are learning. There were some murmurs of assent. And then she added, “We need to look at these people who are asking these questions and just ask them, ‘ARE YOU A NAZI?’”

Jennifer Palmieri jumped in quickly, gently, and cautioned, “No, no, no, don’t call them a Nazi.”

Oh, and here’s a gutsy response from a video’s pundit-in-training to a curveball question. During her practice interview, the other CAP presenter switched from asking her about global warming and then asked her if Zarqawi’s death proved Bush’s strategy was going better than expected: “Haven’t we heard several times before that Zarqawi was dead? It seems like there’s less certainty whether Zarqawi’s dead than whether the earth is warming.”

We just finished reviewing her performance on tape and there was a wonderful exchange where Palmieri said, now, when you tell a joke like that, you should sort of smile at your own joke. Otherwise people will think you’re … like those people who don’t believe in global warming.” (In other words, in Kosland, a nut).

No, [the trainee pundit] clarified, she wasn’t joking. And several people spoke up to agree with her. Poor Ms. Palmieri said, oh, now, now, they did DNA. “And fingerprints”, someone added. And scars, I supplied.

And the question remains unresolved.

Maybe I’m just going native here but I felt a certain sympathy for the Center for American Progress people, who tried to rein in the worst impulses of the Kos kids like fourth-grade teachers. They seemed personable, competent and they knew the arguments on the issues from both sides-–and put the pundits-in-training through the wringer. (One of the best ones argued for the Net Neutrality Act from the standpoint of all-American entrepreneurship and free enterprise. He’s going places.) But overall let’s just say the PiT’s showed a great variation in their readiness for prime-time, mainstream media appearances.

Which is what they wanted, although the “Why go on Fox News at all?” question was asked and answered just as in the session Byron York attended. One assertive fellow who likes to call in to right-wing talk radio shows and mouth off wanted to know why places like CAP didn’t make it easier for the netroots/Kos community to get in touch with TV producers, radio hosts, etc. And Jennifer Palmieri talked about how these numbers change all the time, and how they are very important personal relationships, and how CAP ought to free up and make available some contacts for the “progressive radio shows”….oooh, Randi Rhodes, here we come! They’re still on in, what, Boston? Berkeley?

In other words, she quite graciously said no.

Think about the CAP people’s position here: Let’s say you do a lot of work liberal causes, like the CAP does—some of their best research, some of their best media relations, and you build up a reputation as a serious commentator, a serious who’s-who person. Important people talk to you at parties, and they listen, and they give you their cards. Let’s say you get, I don’t know, Keith Olbermann’s cell phone number and you feel free to call him now and then with a good idea for a guest or a show topic. You have drinks now and then.

And now some guy in a hemp serape wants you to hand over that number, and all your contacts, so whenever there’s a rumor that the ROVE INDICTMENT IS IMMINENT or there’s new PROOF THAT BUSH FIRED MISSILES AT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER THROUGH A SECRET CODE EMBEDDED IN “MY PET GOAT” (aka “The Caprese Code”) he can ring up Olbermann at 11 at night and try to get on his show.

Not going to happen. There is an establishment here. There are gatekeepers. There is a power differential. The mainstream CAP Democrats want to hang on to their power, and dole it out at events like this, bit by bit, and tame and domesticate these wild netroots community.

And the Kos Kids want to take it.

Yearly Kos. They call it that since they’re providing you a year’s worth of material.

Can we get some video of these lunatics?

JammieWearingFool on June 8, 2006 at 10:21 PM

Now they know the quality of their people.

They soon will find out the liberal mentality of these “Jung Volks” is a mix of Little Red Guard and the Storm Trooper!

There is a long way to go before they can let these young guys go out and surf on the net under their banner.

“Are you a Nazi?”….HILARIOUS!

easy87us on June 8, 2006 at 11:06 PM

“ARE YOU A NAZI?”

At least it was in the form of a question. That’s a good first step.

Jim Treacher on June 8, 2006 at 11:30 PM

Jim my friend, you have a short memory?

Did they slash tires of the buses that take old ladies to vote?

Did they shoot up GOP offices?

Did they ram a car onto the side walk and nearly killed some poor volunteers?

“Are you a Nazi” ….I suspect the question is asked in a manner adopted by the gangs….

“Are you a Crip?”….you life depends on your answer…LOL

easy87us on June 8, 2006 at 11:46 PM

I live about 10 minutes away from Mandalay Bay which is on the Southern end of the Strip. The Riviera - which is near Circus Circus is a dive. Only the best for the Kos Kids!

calnevari on June 8, 2006 at 11:52 PM

I’m not sure but “Are you a leftist pinko commie? They murdered more” might be an appropriate answer. Wish we could give full control of the Democratic Party to them. It would make our jobs easier.

tadams1138 on June 8, 2006 at 11:54 PM

How many bars of soap are you up to listening to all this? 4? 5? X?

Defector01 on June 8, 2006 at 11:56 PM

Jim my friend, you have a short memory?

Er, I wasn’t saying anybody’s a Nazi. I was saying that instead of assuming everybody she disagrees with is a Nazi, this young woman at least left an element of doubt. Which is a good first step. It was a joke at her expense. HTH.

Jim Treacher on June 8, 2006 at 11:59 PM

Even the people who know these so-called tactics are getting a new one ripped daily on the blogosphere, the lack of logic is astounding, keep it up Kos tools.Mapes,Rather.Juan Cole, etc…..

bbz123 on June 9, 2006 at 1:53 AM

Ich bin nein Nazi.

clyde on June 9, 2006 at 4:52 AM

Are they making videos of these sessions and, if so, when will they be appearing on Stupid Videos?

pjcomix on June 9, 2006 at 6:22 AM

The material for this article is outstanding. I feel like I’m understanding some of the core problems (functionally speaking) that libs are having.

The writing here though is a bit “Stream of Consciousness” though if you get my meaning. It’s kind of hard to tell where you are exactly you are at the conference and/or who’s speaking when.

Just a wee bit of constructive criticism…

Keep up the great work!

venmax on June 9, 2006 at 6:58 AM

They should sing song before starting everyday…

say….why not sing….

“We are the world, we are the…..”

Are they trying to steal the conservative kids clean image? I guess they have tried with the Mento Bunch. Too bad the T-Shirt girl ruined it.

easy87us on June 9, 2006 at 8:26 AM

Jennifer Palmeiri and other “handlers” should get credit for their patience, at least. They must feel like they are herding cats with ADD, spontaneously meowing “Haliburton!!”

It would be refreshing if this ultimately results in the lefties actually debating the issues instead of spewing vitriol, assuming that they can ever put together a coherent message other than Bush Lied etc. That way we can whip their butts like grown-ups instead of just rolling our eyes and shaking our heads.

inmanjh on June 9, 2006 at 11:26 AM

Inmanjh, that will be the day…LOL…fat chance again…

The left is growing in the irrational segment, and shrinking in the rational segment. To please their constituents, the Demos are leaning more and more to the left.

The momentum is here to stay. The conservatives are winning not because we have made any changes to our platform. We are winning because the rational Demos have become Independent and vote Republican!

The DNC is unable to change and they are unwilling to change. When almost all their money is coming from Lewis and Soros, as I said before, they better accept the “we pay you we own you”…situation.

easy87us on June 9, 2006 at 11:40 AM

I love that line ‘Are you a Nazi’ because the leftists that make the statement have no idea that Nazi is an acronym for National Socialists which is what they are, national socialists or worse.

docdave on June 9, 2006 at 1:47 PM

I think the problem is simpler than that; it is far easier to give in to your more base instincts than it is to be mature and engage in a rational discussion where you *gasp* might have to be educated about a topic, discuss it with someone intelligent, and possibly LOSE the debate and be forced to re-examine your own thoughts on it.

Who of us hasn’t been tempted to resort to blurting out invective? I volunteered for Bush Sr’s re-election campaign in my state and when Bush Sr. gave his concession speech I choked up and the local TV cameras there caught me; I found out the next morning that at least half of my co-workers had seen me on TV. I was tired, I was bummed, and when one guy walked in he couldn’t resist, stood in front of my desk, pointed at me and laughed, “Haha, you lost! Bush lost!”. I was tempted to get rude and didn’t. He did this off an on all day, with other people chuckling and nodding as he did so. It wouldn’t do any good to get personal, and so I didn’t, but I admit I was tempted and it was hard to resist.

But Republicans don’t stoop to that. You argue pointedly, you know when you’re about to lose a friend if you go further and you don’t give in and proceed with the tongue lashing that would most likely make them go home and cry. Sometimes it’s hard, especially when you see people cheering because, let’s say, President Reagan is at death’s door with Alzheimer’s and people think he deserves it. You try to keep the name calling to a minimum and the issues in the forefront, and hope people with a modicum of wisdom will one day see the light. Occasionally you get critical and adamant, or push, and you have no problems calling ANSWER, well Communist. A spade is a spade, after all.

The Krazy Kos Kidz have no such governor; they are comfortable in their arrogance and in the supreme superiority of their point of view, so anyone who is a dissenter DESERVES the hateful namecalling, the unwarranted comparisons to murderous dictators and the effigies. Since you’re too stupid to believe us, is their mantra, you don’t deserve to be treated with any decency. So all the stops are out, BusHitler, murderer, baby killer, etc etc. I wouldn’t mind so much if after they yelled “BUSHITLER!” they would explain why the comparison- to them- seemed so apt and listen to my disagreement, but it never goes that way. It’s hit and run politics, and like so many things with our party, I wish our elected officials confronted this more head-on instead of just ignoring it. Make these jackanapes defend it.

The Kos Kidz get away with it, because you can see some of their own talking heads getting away with it, like Carville and Olbermann. We need to challenge them more and use Michelle and Ann as our guides; they don’t let anyone get away with that crap! =)

linlithgow,

I know you are, but what am I?

Just kidding!
