Time shills for floundering Dixie Chicks
posted at 2:54 pm on May 21, 2006 by Allahpundit
Their new singles are tanking, but Natalie Maines hates Bush more than ever and that has to count for something. So they’ve got the cover. Congrats to the Chicks and better luck next time to Pearl Jam and Neil Young, who surely could have been folded into this somehow. I’m thinking group shot in front of a tattered American flag, duct tape over their mouths, and a ghostly image of Joe McCarthy sinisterly putting a Chicks CD back in the rack.
Time’s article is behind a registration wall so you’ll have to make do with that Fox article. Here’s my favorite part, which perfectly encapsulates the nutroots mindset while also recalling one of the better lines from the funniest movie ever:
“I’d rather have a small following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith,” Maguire said. “We don’t want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do.”
See, it’s not that the group’s popularity is waning. It’s that their appeal is becoming more … selective.
You know who should be on the cover this week? These guys. Death metal at Eurovision? ROCK ON!:
Six glorious pages of photos over at Yahoo News of scandinavia’s answer to Gwar. Enjoy.
Update: In case you didn’t get that the Chicks are supposed to be free-speech martyrs, Time has added a helpful graphic aid.
Update: Our affiliate, No Pasaran, has video of Lordi in action. Off. The. Hook.

You know, Celebrities are like Court Jesters to me. I clap my hands and they perform, When they start talking about Politics, the President, or the War, I clap my hands and say “Off with them”
They are just glorified Court Jesters who use thier talents as a springboard for thier opinions. If they had no talent, no one would listen to them at all!

When Americans bad-mouth and criticize their country and President while on foreign soil during time of war, they become in my view, TRAITORS! Such are the Dixie Chicks.
My fervent hope is they melt into oblivion. . .

Watch out…Dixie Chicks will surely go topless…
Calling themselves “Dixie Clothless Chicks”, I think they want to attract the good country folks …um….young boys, to be exact.
Have you seen their last album cover? It is not quite topless yet but it is getting there. Do you want to pay big buck to see skinny chicks or to buy some chickens for a nice BBQ?
I rather spend my money on a case of BUD.

My entertainment options keep getting smaller. I liked the Chicks until they came out politically. It’s hard to find a movie who’s star hasn’t bashed my values, and what’s on T.V, the West Wing? As Laura Ingraham says, wish they’d just shut up and sing.
right as rain man on May 21, 2006 at 4:52 PM
just shut up and sing are the key words. The Dixie chix are no longer Texans!! No Texan bashes another Texan in friggin England!!
gary on May 21, 2006 at 4:58 PM
Entertainers should stick to entertaining. I once spent big bucks at a Jackson Brown concert to listen to music, what I got was a lecture on the environment and politics. That’s not getting my moneys worth of entertainment. I would have never spent my money on that crap if I’d known that in advance.
My message to Neil Young, The Dixie Chicks, and other celebrities, if you don’t like it here, then you’re free to live somewhere else. Don’t let the door smack you in the arse when you leave.
Perhaps they are doing me a favor. I don’t like their politics, so now I can spend my money on some more worthwhile. Like Charlie Daniels! Yeee Haaww!

Back when all I knew of them was the music, I liked the Dixie Chicks. Good strong musicians, good harmonies-they are talented. But once they became celebrity political activists-and put that ahead of the music–good by, so long-I won’t buy another CD of their music. In their defense, selling millions of records, sold out concerts, performing on TV would swell anybody’s head, make anyone egocentric enough to believe that they are “*IMPORTANT*”.
Their music made them stars-their political activism made them fall.
Country music fans are generally very patriotic. And unforgiving of those who pick on our country, our President, especially while we are at war. So long, Chicks.
Doug on May 21, 2006 at 5:10 PM
I knew this was it for these girls as soon as they made the comments over seas about our involvement in Iraq. MEMO to Dixie Chicks: You are Entertainers, not political commentators. Stick to your day (night) job!

“You know, Celebrities are like Court Jesters to me.”
Actually, I like to think of celebrities as performing monkeys. When the organ grinder grinds, they dance. When the grinder stops, they shut the heck up.
One must be a really pathetic loser to take political or social cues from a group of mostly ill or uneducated boors.

Their careers are in the toilet. The wealth that they’ve accumulated should be redistributed to the families of those soldiers who have given their lives so these little spoiled chickadees are free to spew their anti-American propaganda.

I read a great bumper sticker the other day that said, “I’m Embarassed that the Dixie Chicks are from Texas.”
It’s laughable when airheads like this confuse the ability to sing harmonies and play instruments with… well… with anything else. They get paid huge amounts of money for their skills, and then throw careers away in order to appear “cool” in front of a foreign audience. Yeah, go figure. Slam the Commander in Chief to a bunch of America-bashers while our country is in a war. Who’da thunk that country music fans would have a problem with that? And do they think that “Time” is what their now former fans are going to be reading. No, country music lovers prefer getting their fiction from other sources, not the pure fantasies Time is found of “reporting” in their rag.

The Cackling Hens claim “Landslide” as one of their hits. Let’s not forget that Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac wrote and sang that song some 30 plus years ago. You could add Ms. Nicks to the list of most patriotic musicians….she visits the Walter Reed hospital often, giving ipods to the injured….and without fanfare nor publicity. And the “Gold Dust Woman” supports President Bush and our troops.
I hear nothing of Chicksie Dicks album sales which stores are selling for half-price. Fat Nat says she doesn’t consider themselves a country band and doesn’t want them as fans. Biting the hand that feeds you, dear.
I had no respect for Clinton as President, but had no international forum to express my opinion.
The Ditsy Chicks just seem to lay one bad egg after another.
Shut Up and DON’T sing.

ibcrazyru2 on May 21, 2006 at 6:47 PM
Stevie Nicks is on the good side? After the Clinton innauguration gig?
“Don’t stop..thinkin’ about tomorrow” still keeps me away from them, after all these years.
I loved that band. I turned that band off.
Should I reconsider??

While the Chicks were driving down album sales bashing Bush and Toby Keith, Keith along with Ted Nugent became the new Bob Hope show for the troops overseas with nearly no fanfare. The Nuge posted a few photos on his site coupled with some comments about the troops’ appreciation, but not much else was said.

“The wealth that they’ve accumulated should be redistributed to the families of…”
No, what wealth they have should be left alone, and they should be free to have and express whatever opinions they care to have.
But that’s not what they want – they want all of that, and for people not to react to what they think and say. Sorry for the “Fairly Odd Parents” devolution, but they want a “rule-free wish”, including the insistence that nobody disagrees with them.
Because, you know, disagreement means you’re chilling their dissent, or some such. And because, when it’s coming from them, and only when it’s coming from them, to totally put words in Jefferson’s mouth – “Dissent is the highest form of patriotism”.
When did the global irony sensor get broken enough that dissent against other peoples’ dissent is, itself, somehow not to be permitted?
Patton on May 21, 2006 at 7:19 PM
Nicks was a desperate woman then, a bit on the skids. She needed Fleetwood Mac and agreed to do the inaugurral song.
She’s since regretted that.

Maguire’s comment is nothing but spin in attempt to save face. Surely, Maguire knows that the financial success of the Ditzy Twits . . . er . . . Dixie Chicks . . . (Note to Self: Refrain from stooping to their level) . . . depends on the group’s songs getting played on radio stations, which is less likely to happen if they continue to insult the same listeners who made it possible for Maguire and her bandmates to become music stars in the first place.
Dodo David on May 21, 2006 at 8:56 PM
Being a “has been” is tough for people like that. I can’t even recall the name of any of their songs. But you can always count on the rest of the liberal MSM to try to help out. Look what they did for Air America, “listening for loser” or something like that.

Ah, the new three stooges; I enjoyed listening to Natty M. deride her fans as rednecks. I wonder if their agent is off suicide watch yet. I give her credit though; stupid she is, but she’s defiant. She lost a big chunk of fan base with the Bush bashing, and now she gives a big fat middle finger to the fans who you would think she wants to forgive her. Well, I had to deal with the GoGo’s falling out of the top 40. I eventually got over it. Maybe Nat will turn her yodeling skills to a more forgiving audience. I hear country music is underrepresented in Adult movie soundtracks. She might also use that as a vehicle to stay relevant. Cheers Nat; see you in the celebrity gossip column.

They kicked off their concert tour in my town of Greenville SC the year Gnataly ran her drivel in a foriegn land. All you heard was ” they still sold out their show” That was because the tickets were already sold before her statements. Michael Ghallager had and ANTI-DIXIE-CHICK show across town on the same day with the Martial Tucker Band and donated the proceeds to Gallager’s Army to feed the families of troops off to fight a neccesary war. It is too bad that people think that their opinions matter when that is not what they are noted for.

See.. here’s where I have NO sympathy for the Dixie Chicks.
What Red-State Country and Western music fan DOESN’T KNOW that Willie Nelson is a big-time dope smoking hippie who’s against the war and against President Bush?
NOBODY.
THEY ALL KNOW THAT.
The only difference is that Willie is up front and honest about who he is and what he believes right from the get go. And would you believe it? He still sells a ton of records!!
Unfortunately the Dixie Chicks are cut from the same elitist America-hating cloth that the rest of the liberals in the entertainment industry are cut from. They just managed to hide it for several years and got busted big time!
DUMB.
Willie doesn’t think his fans are a bunch of stupid, ignorant rednecks – he just disagrees with them on a lot of philosophical and political issues. He still RESPECTS THEM.
Every interview I’ve seen of the Ditsy Chicks I get the impression that the egos in that room could sink the Titanic. And it’s pretty f*cking sad to see the MSM trying so desperately to ressurect their careers.
Good luck. You’ll need it!!

Hey Allah, why don’t you caste your “blessings” on these “Chicks” and send them to your “Paradise” where they can join the other “Virgins”?
I know they lost their virginity since forever but you are Allah, you can restore it any time you want.
These “Chicks” support your “Martyrs” and are willing to be part of the batch of “72 Virgins” for each “Martyr.”
Please Allah, heed their request. Remember, they are “ashamed” of being from Texas and I know you don’t love Texas either because her native, Bush, is fighting your potential “Martyrs.”
Thank you Allah.
And Death to the Infidels.

Ben Here, you’re absolutely right…that was a Fleetwood Mac song by Christine McVie. Again, Ms. Nicks was at a low point then, struggling with drug addiction (that nose candy) and had been wanting a reunion of the band that made her famous.
doingwhatican on May 22, 2006 at 5:27 AM
I knew all that about Fleetwood Mac and the Inauguration appearance. Still, I like the music.
Y’all take the wrong tack. I never stopped “Thinking about Tomorrow”. I though about it daily for 8 years…Then tomorrow came. That’s right, I stole back the song FROM those that would pervert it. Turnabout is fair play…Heh
BTW, the Fleetwood Mac DVD “The Dance”, is recommended, especially on a good surround system and a big screen. I’ve had good parties around this one.
TheSev on May 22, 2006 at 5:58 AM

saint kansas on May 22, 2006 at 10:13 AM
You’re right Willie Nelson is INDEED a Liberal, his anti-war positions are flagrant and hurt our Troops.
Unfortunately, liberalism and the Left is slowly creeping its way into Country Music.
You hear it in the lyrics, “my factory job got outsourced to Mexico”, or “let’s hear another Springsteen song!” etc, etc.
Willie Nelson verbally and financially supports “Codepink” which is as radical and anti-american and anti-military as you can get.
As much as I like Toby Keith, he sickens me for giving Willie so much face time in his music.
Bon Jovi sings a duet with the lead singer of Sugarland.
Tim McGraw and Faith Hill hammered Bush regarding Post-Katrina. They made no comments or criticism towards Mayor Nagrin or the Louisianna Governor, only came out bashing the president and blaming the federal government.
The Dixie Chicks are the most arrogant about it, but the Bon Jovis and Willie Nelson’s are next in line.
Richard Davis on May 22, 2006 at 11:03 AM

Bush is not a native Texan. He was born in Connecticut [I think it was].
The DickHead Chicks are hypocrites. I posted on their web site, in their forums, letting them know I was ashamed they were from my home state of Texas, and I ripped them a knew one besides. My post lasted less than 48 hours before it was removed and my account was disabled.
They’re for free speech, on foreign soil, against a sitting President, during a time of war but they’re against free speech, against three idiots, on a forum, on the Internet.
I’m no longer a fan of Bush because he really is stupid. WE ARE NOT A NATION OF IMMIGRANTS! I can’t believe he actually got on TV and yelled at the American people. He’s no Texan. The DimWhit Chicks need to get their facts straight. He’s not from here [Texas], he’s an immigrant.

Such delicious schadenfreude!!
I’ve lived in Nashville for almost a decade, and trust me – they are truly finished in this town.
It is amazing how far they’ve fallen through their own stupidity. And the funniest part is that they still … don’t … get … it.
They’ll never grasp that it wasn’t their opinions – but the WAY they did and said what they did and said – that destroyed their careers.
That they are now so COWARDLY that they are retracting their apology is just the icing on the cake. Truly, they define cowardice. I loved their music, too … too bad. They don’t even exist in my world anymore – and it looks they’ll be gone period, soon!
(Topped out at 32 on the singles chart, 36 in country? Seriously? After being the biggest selling female group ever? THAT is a a helluva a fall from grace)
