Breaking: Senate kills amendment that would deny illegals SS benefits

50-49. I’m informed by an e-mailer that Chuck Hagel was among the kill votes.

Mary K is apoplectic. Keep your eye on this page for the vote count.

Earlier immigration post is here. Two hours forty-five minutes and counting until the president’s comprehensive immigration photo op at the border.

Update: Here are the “Republicans” who voted to kill it; our friend Senator McCain naturally is among them. The lone abstention was Jay Rockefeller, so it probably wouldn’t have affected the outcome.

Brownback (R-KS)
Chafee (R-RI)
DeWine (R-OH)
Graham (R-SC)
Hagel (R-NE)
Lugar (R-IN)
Martinez (R-FL)
McCain (R-AZ)
Specter (R-PA)
Stevens (R-AK)
Voinovich (R-OH)

Update: Reuters reports. Note the choice of accompanying photo.

We need to plow Washington under a few thousand truckloads of concrete (while Congress is in session) and start all over again. They are all hopelessly corrupt.

NOTHING — absolutely NOTHING! — could be worse for our nation than this bunch of smug, self-serving sicko bureacrats!

While Bush bleats about problems with social security, imaginary or otherwise, these miscreants, wallowing in deceit and subterfuge, voted on a bill that I dub the “Kill social security and America by Mexican” bill.

With this bunch in office, WE ARE DOOMED!

ForYourEdification on May 18, 2006 at 2:18 PM

This is yet another damned disgraceful action by the Senate.
You don’t grant benefits to criminals. Ever.
What is wrong with the Senate? The House seems to get it but the Senate is strangely clueless about the illegal alien issue. What gives? Anybody know?

Abigail Adams on May 18, 2006 at 2:20 PM

I *believe* Rockefeller is out recovering from back surgery. I think I heard something about that during the confirmation hearings this morning on FoxNews.

E L Frederick on May 18, 2006 at 2:26 PM

Was there any doubt how this was going to turn out??? The Senate has lost it’s way, and only catering to the People who are filling their pockets with Corrupt Money. And you have to wonder who much Vicinte Fox is paying some of these people (JOHN McCAIN!!!!!!) to sell out their own country.

havok on May 18, 2006 at 2:28 PM

AAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!! WHERE IS THE GLEN LIVET???

DID WE SOURCE THESE IDIOTS FROM IRAN?????

THIS MUST BE FICTION!!!

AAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!!!!

I just wrote my Senators from Georgia that were against tabling the Ensign Amdt. Thank Goodness common sense reigns here in Ga. (At lease some of the time) I think that McCain, et al are smoking and drinking prohibited substances. In any event. Regardless of the outcome, McCain has permanently lost my support. McCain, the PAIN, will be standing in the RAIN..Don’t vote for this pompus ass loser.

Note to the United State Senate

U Suck!!

robman27 on May 18, 2006 at 2:45 PM

If there is one bright spot I can find in this it is that McVain is burning so many bridges with the conservative base (despite his token efforts to kiss and make up with Jerry Falwell) that he will have less than a snowball’s chance in a famous hot place in the ‘08 primaries.

I don’t know who will oppose Hillary in ‘08, but it most definitely will not be John McVain.

thirteen28 on May 18, 2006 at 2:46 PM

Does the House bill even address this issue? If not, and the Senate bill specifically spells these benefits out, then there is still a chance that it can get fixed when it goes to the conference committee.

While this certainly illustrates depths of the Senate’s absurdity, at least the House continues to listen to the people (well, more than the Senate does).

inmanjh on May 18, 2006 at 2:46 PM

I am ready to go dig a hole and start living in/defending my own cave. If we forget to vote these hemmorhoids out in November we basically confirm the mandate they think they have. Are you P***ED OFF YET???

horsepower_1st on May 18, 2006 at 2:48 PM

McCain might as well announce right now he is not running for Pres. in 08 and just hope he gets re-elected in Arizona. I’m hoping JD Hayworth will challenge him in his primary, or even Sherriff Joe Arpaio.

roninacreage on May 18, 2006 at 2:49 PM

What is scary is, John McCain’s electibility is said to be very high in ‘08. Claimed mostly by the MSM.
This is also a vote that will slip under the radar of most americans, who oppose illegal immigrant benefits.

However, he is digging his own grave, nice and slow among true Conservatives.

Anybody but McCain in ‘08. (Preferably George Allen)

CmmnSns on May 18, 2006 at 2:49 PM

Its a sure thing the illegals will also keep their “right” to
anchor babies
welfare
food stamps
free medical/dental
schooling
pell grants
in-state tuition
subsidized housing
Thanks,US Congress.
Worthless enablers.

Criminal Rights Advocate Politicians or C.R.A.P.

roninacreage on May 18, 2006 at 2:56 PM

Somehow, our democratic republic has been twisted into a senatorial republic. These people are no longer representing the will of the people THEY REPRESENT. I would bet ANYTHING the folks represented by these traitors would disagree wholeheartedly with their vote. The U.S. has just undergone a bloodless revolution and we lost. Great……the pro-illegal lobby wins, Social Security is down the tubes for sure now. Crap, what sense is there in even voting anymore?? These bastards just do what they want anyway. Doesn’t matter what party is in office.

darwin on May 18, 2006 at 2:58 PM

Et Tu Brute.

Kramer on May 18, 2006 at 3:06 PM

“What is scary is, John McCain’s electibility is said to be very high in ‘08. Claimed mostly by the MSM.”

So saith the MSM. Did they bother to check with conservatives that make up the base of the Republican Party? I wouldn’t hold your breath.

“This is also a vote that will slip under the radar of most americans, who oppose illegal immigrant benefits.”

His primary oppenents won’t forget it, along with his generally atrocious performance on this issue. Nor will they forget McVain-Feingold. Nor will they forget he voted against the tax cuts. Nor will they forget his global warming hot air. Nor will they forget his grandstanding “anti-torture” bill. Nor will they forget his spotty record on 2nd amendment issues. And so forth.

McVain has done so much to burn bridges with grassroots conservatives (the exact type he needs to win Republican primaries) that one vote under the radar will not be enough to allow people to forget.

thirteen28 on May 18, 2006 at 3:13 PM

Well, the only good thing I saw on the vote was that my 2 senators from virginia (Allen and Warner) voted NAY. This whole thing is so frustrating that at times i just want to do an Unhinged Liberal thing and scream. I have been writing my congressmen, representatives, senators, and the president just hoping that they can get a real picture of the state of affairs. I wish now that I would have been more vocal/proactive during my military career when it came to politics. At that time I was just more worried about a strong military and who supported it.
Since retiring (2003), I have promised myself that I will become more engaged in what happens in MY COUNTRY, and make informed choices.

br8veheart on May 18, 2006 at 3:15 PM

Hopefully all of those “Republican” Senators will be voted out of office in their next re-election bid. At least My Republican (Grassley) was not on the wrong side.

cwcsquared on May 18, 2006 at 3:26 PM

Heres FIVE quotes of interest: “Lindsey Graham comes from one of the most conservative states in the country , and he, one day, is going to have to go back there and ask for their votes again when he wants to be reelected. This is the kind of thing that people will remember.” “We can conduct our little rebellon here if you want to call it that, one election at a time, one politician at a time. McCain, he’s going to have to ask Republican voters for their support one day.” There is a rebellion among Republicans taking place, ladies and gentlemen. The Republican Party itself is missing it. Of course, the Drive-By Media is missing it.” “We’ll let the Third World take to the streets; let’em demand rights. We will go to the polls and civilly speak through our votes. There is a rebellion underway here. The media, the GOP establishment do not see it.” These ragamuffin, long-haired, maggot-infested, dope-smoking worthless losers, they go out and they protest on communist holidays. They protest on May Day or they pick a day they don’t want to go to school, but we, ladies and gentlemen, protest on Election Day, when it counts.” “In these primary elections , RINO Republicans, liberal blue-blood country club Rockefeller Republicans are being thrown out of office, and conservative Republicans are winning.” Lets show them how its done.

Weak link in the chain as always is the Senate. Unfortunately the House may tip back to the Dems, but if you look carefully, it’s the Senate. A sorry lot.

As I just told my senator (Martinez), votes like these justify the repeal of the 17th Amendment. Maybe we should get onto that. Repeal the 17th. If these clowns won’t uphold the Constitution, let’s gut their cash cow.

I’m dead serious about this. Immigration outrage is the one wedge issue on which blue and red voters wholly agree on, which makes me think that a repeal of the 17th can easily pass the House.

Kid from Brooklyn on May 18, 2006 at 4:08 PM

AAACKK! I’m going to pull a Howard Dean on this!

It’s true that Rockefeller had back surgery.

I bet the Sinators would have voted differently had they been a part of the regular SS system like us taxpayers are.

My hands are tied, with Feinstain and Boxer ruling my area. So much for power to the people.

I keep thinking this is a nightmare that will go away.

NTWR on May 18, 2006 at 4:11 PM

Let’s see, highlight list, file, print, selection, print, tape to refrigerator. Call and cuss. Fax obsenities. Donate to conservative opponents. Go door to door. Pray like hell. And scratch ‘em off one at a time.

JodyBlonde on May 18, 2006 at 4:14 PM

Hey, let’s discuss how to repeal the 17th…

My calls, email, and letters are not working. It’s time for ACTION, AMERICANS!!!

NTWR on May 18, 2006 at 4:14 PM

Mmmm….The House and Senate would not pass a bill to fix the BROKEN Social Security System, even though they all know a CRISIS is around the corner. Today, they add more problems on top of one huge problem. Here’s a question, let’s say I have a kid who worked under the table for 10 years before getting a real job. Will the Feds allow him/her to apply those years to the system? Of course not. Only illegal aliens get special treatment. Please tell me…If this isn’t TREASON, then what is it? This world has absolutly turned upside down. I’m to the point now that it’s getting scary. What the hell is going on in DC? Is there something we don’t know about?

SparkyFD on May 18, 2006 at 4:15 PM

How silly of me — And of course vote!

JodyBlonde on May 18, 2006 at 4:16 PM

Well, that’s the last time I vote for Brownback. I think his presidential dreams just died too.

Moto Oda on May 18, 2006 at 4:19 PM

Repealing the 17th restores constitutional order. Think about it, what would happen when you force accountability upon 100 U.S. Senators? Certainly not buffoonery like this amnesty business. The lobbyists are out of the equation. At least, they’d have to leave the District of Crack in large numbers, presumably to ply their trades in such exotic locales as Albany, Talahassee, and Bismarck.

Kid from Brooklyn on May 18, 2006 at 4:29 PM

I just don’t get it, with 80% of the population upset about illegals (in both parties) why do all the presidential hopefulls keep trouncing our opinions? Did they already give these illegals the right to vote when I wasn’t looking?

NTWR on May 18, 2006 at 4:29 PM

In case anyone went to see what photo Reuters was using and wonders what the big deal is because it’s President Bush, that’s because it was just changed. It was a little hispanic girl wrapped in an American flag.

RightWinged on May 18, 2006 at 4:34 PM

You know that answer, NTWR. Electoral machines are in place, like labor unions, to further their own clout and relevance, and to perpetuate their own existence. “We the People” don’t really matter that mush, because our elected officials are accountable to the special interesta, and the splinter groups. But we should never sell ourselves short. Remember the Miers nomination.

CAAAAANNNNN YYYYOOOOOUUUUUU DDIIIIIIGGGG IIIIIIITTT????

Kid from Brooklyn on May 18, 2006 at 4:42 PM

Jesus what the hell is Martinez doing in FL?? He voted against the enforcement amendment a couple of days ago too…

Need to move…

venmax on May 18, 2006 at 4:43 PM

Martinez wasn’t like this when he ran the OC, that’s for sure. They got to him. McCain, Hagel and Specter fed him the RINO Kool-Aid and he drank it all up. That’s why it’s time to yank the 17th.

Kid from Brooklyn on May 18, 2006 at 4:47 PM

This doesn’t surprise me at all. They are all just a bunch of baffoons. Note to the United States Senators: we are watching you…very, very, very closely.

Birdman: That’s Belladonna, right? Great album! I met Stevie Nicks in Tulsa Ok in 1984. Shook her hand. Whatta babe! There were literally hundreds of roses thrown onto the stage from fans. Great show!

ecamorg on May 18, 2006 at 5:06 PM

I suggest the senators take another break from doing any more work on this and go listen directly from their constituents. I am P**sed!!! To think that a bunch of illegal aliens that use fraudulent docs to get jobs that “Americans WILL do” now get the benefits that the same
“Americans WONT get” because illegals took those jobs from Americans. Those senators do not live in the real world.
Construction jobs that were once well paying jobs to American families are now being given to illegals at a fraction of the pay. That is NOT an example of jobs Americans WON”T DO. That is an example of illegals and
corrupt employers screwing the American worker!!

Memo

To: Republican Senators who voted to kill the amendment
From: Your Constituents

What the hell were you thinking?

Mott on May 18, 2006 at 5:14 PM

Dear Senators Republicans, dear George Weasel Bush, did you ever consider -thanks to your efforts of keeping the borders wide open (North and South) and ignoring for many years the problem of illegal immigrants- that Bin Laden himself (and his followers) might be already plotting his next attack on America from WITHIN the United States?

Voters must reconsider whom they are voting for. I hope we can have a Congress that is protecting America, not looking for its personal interests, power and money.

Frankly, we the people are the victims and we deserve it somehow. We elected those weasels. We have to live with it until we make a better, more intelligent choice.

Again, I’m asking, when Tancredo will decide to run for president?

CatholicConservative on May 18, 2006 at 5:18 PM

So much for the the saucer that cools the drink, (or something like that) as Kerry and other people say the Senate should work with or against the House.
The Republican leadership of the House have the right ideas. The Senate doesn’t wanna listen to them. Morons!
Glad my UT Senators were not participants of this charade, although I sent a nice (wink, wink) e-mail to Bennett about the Isakson Enforcement Now Amendment.
Keep the people informed, Hot Air, Michelle, et al.
We need it.
Gracias from a Puerto Rican against Illegal Inmigrants.

let me see if i have this right.

1).we have a bill that makes english the national language,
and proficiency required for citizenship.

.but if you dont speak english you can not be penalized.

2) .6000 national guard being sent to the boarder

.but they have no authority to stop or detain anyone.

i belive there is a document somewhere that states,
when the govt. no longer represents the will of the people

mike hale on May 18, 2006 at 6:06 PM

ecamorg: Yea Stevee Nicks first album “Bellidonna” (in Italian means “fair lady”, and is also a toxic plant the black berries were used as a poison) came out in 1980. My favorite album is her 2nd sollo the “Wild Heart” That came out in June of 1983. In “87″ Stevee was about 36 or 35 maybe a year or so younger than me, and looking good “the “queen of rock & roll”. Mick Fleetwood once said it always amazed him how the woman would come to the concerts dressd as witches, and would throw rosses, and try to tuch her, or outside the concert hall just touch her limo; powerfull. I saw her in concert in “83″ and again in I forget around “90″. I also have also seen Fleewood Mac in concert twice. The first time was “77″. Stevee is my favorite rock & Rool perfomer. I have just about everything she has ever written. If you ever want any Nicks info, ask me, words to songs etc. ROCK & ROLL FOREVER…

birdman on May 18, 2006 at 7:11 PM

I lambasted my senator for voting it down; I also wrote to all of its sponsors to thank them. From here on out I am going to have to put action -lots of it - behind my words. The days of my taking this country for granted are over. Thanks to all here for ideas and information.

ChelleFiche on May 18, 2006 at 8:47 PM

Well, no surprise to see my two idiots on the list, Voinovich and DeWine. Wish I could sue them for false advertising.

I’ve written both of them, especially recently, but don’t believe either one gives a sh** about their base until it’s time to come courting us again next time they run. I do think there’s hope if we continue to crack down hard on the RINO’s until the next crop gets the message.

If a good strong conservative third party candidate surfaced, I believe he’d do really well.

Unbelievable!!!! What in the world are they thinking? Well, of course, they aren’t thinking! I am sooooooooooo sorry that I campaigned for Martinez (R-FL). Soooooo sorry!

Patricia on May 18, 2006 at 9:24 PM

I would like to say a large I’m sorry to the folks of the USA. I thought I had voted for a conservative republican in Lynsey Grahm, but it seems I voted for a spineless, yellow RINO who longs for the vote of non-citizen, non tax-payers, and those who feed on government programs that most of use are not qualified to receive. My wife has cancer and cannot get any government program to help us even though she paid her taxes and served in the Air Force. But while she is waiting in the hospital waiting room looking for help, the mexican translator is rushing illegal imagrants to the front of the line. I am in the Middle East fighting for my country and this is the thanks we get from our elected officials. Do they even remember who put them into office?

At least some of you have Senators you can write to. I have Boxer and Feinstein. Thanks MM for a venue where I can scream my fingers off a bit.

I will say this. As long as American business’ continue hiring and targeting the illegal alien market our country doesn’t have a chance. Unless ofcourse you have the kind of cash to donate to the RNC that Wallmart, McDonald’s and the rest do.

repvoter on May 18, 2006 at 10:53 PM

OK; how many on this list up for election this year? If so, they are the ones who need to be defeated. The 3-4 that stats would say are up are bozos we can spare and barely keep the majority; it would send a powerful message that the GOP needs to get.

If Washington D.C. isn’t careful, they’ll find Democrats and Republicans uniting to throw them ALL the Hell out of there, and let the chips fall where they may.
Both sides ought to be able to work for REAL CHANGE, as the majorities are close, and are not likely to change by much at any rate. We may lose the Majority, but just barely. The point is that with things as close as they are, neither side should feel that it is working against its interest in uniting to THROW THE BUMS OUT.
Who here thinks there’s room to work with Democrats for an anti-incumbent insurgency?

haakondahl on May 19, 2006 at 2:24 AM

NO ONE:

birdman on May 19, 2006 at 2:30 AM

Look at it this way: As Newt says, these are the people to whom we have TEMPORARILY loaned power. The problem is that once in Washington, their base of power shifts away from the lowly electorate back in the flyover country to the powerbrokers based in, and fundraisers conducted in D.C.
So while Newt’s ban on D.C. fundraisers is a great idea, it’s not going to happen before this November, and probably not before 2008, anyway. Same for term limits, which AS OF TODAY, I support.
The big weapon which incumbents have against their own base is that they are the best bet for preserving that seat within the party–the opposition party is ultimately the best friend of an incumbent when the challenger is from the incumbent’s own party.
I’m thinking of an episode of the original Twilight Zone, with a mysterious box which sported an ominous button. AS A THOUGHT EXPERIMENT, what would happen if you approached a Democrat acquaintance and said, “these buttons will replace every Congressman in D.C. with an honest 50/50 chance of Republican or Democrat, but only if we both push the button.”
Think they’d go for it? And are you actually angry enough at the RINO’s to push in the first place?

haakondahl on May 19, 2006 at 2:52 AM

It’s all well and good to complain about how our majority isn’t worth the chairs it takes to seat them, but if “NO ONE:” is willing to do anything about it, then we might as well just shut up and accept the government we deserve.

haakondahl on May 19, 2006 at 2:54 AM

I’m wondering how this will really work? Let’s face it, I doubt that employers paid them “legally” - I doubt taxes were taken out of paychecks. Seems if they can get SS (just by saying they “paid into it”), what about the taxes? Do they get a free ride on that? Where do they get these bogus SS numbers? Are they legitimate numbers of others? Or just made up numbers?

msflea on May 19, 2006 at 8:34 AM

birdbrain: We are not even having this conversation. You are advocating killing Senators, and I hope Michelle cans your sorry a$$. Don’t argue, just shut up.

haakondahl on May 19, 2006 at 11:17 AM

Where’s the AARP on this?

moonsbreath on May 19, 2006 at 11:34 AM

Besides the pro-open borders propaganda telling us we should accept people breaking our laws by illegally entering because we owe a blood debt to all 3rd world people, we were fed the line they are necessary to pay for the Social Security of the coming baby boom retirees. The Senate in its vote has exposed this as B.S. designed to convince us to let in the housebreakers.

The Democrats have said there is nothing wrong with Social Security, so why fix it? This provision,if allowed to become law, will move up the day of doom forward a few years, in the absence of reform. Given that social security is a net transfer of waelth to the poor, the net impact of illegals getting social security under these terms is to make the program more insolvent than it would be if they had never violated our borders.

ptolemy on May 19, 2006 at 1:17 PM

haakondahl: I did not advcoate the killing of senators, and you know that. I was trying to interject a little humer(it was like 3:40AM on the east coast whare I live). You sir are advocating the selling of our SOUL. If we worked with the Dimmocrap party to get rid of the RINOS in The GOP, WE BECOME RINOS. The Democrat party is a party of TREASON, they will do anything to regain their power, anything. What Dems. would you suggest we work with H.Clinton, J. Biden, T. Kennedy, D. Durbin, B. Boxer, D. Feinstein, you can’t trust any of them as far as you can throw them. They will only stab you in the back. GW learned that at the begining of his Presidentsey, with his new tone. It might have worked in Texas, but I could have told him that it wouldn’t work in DC. On another note the Senate is run like a private country club and Bush is an outsider. One of the objectives of the McCain Feingold bill is to keep the incumbnets in power. The first people we want to get rid of is the liberal Dems., and then yes the country club faction of the GOP. To me the country club faction of the GOP are old women, they just hang out and gossip, rag, and complain , and and talk behind everyones back, and accomplish nothing. I linked to your site at 4:00AM my time, but I was to tired to look into it. I DID NOT ADVOCATE THE KILLING OF ANYONE, YOU ARE TRYING TO PUT WORDS INTO MY MOUTH! In todays vent Michelle mentioned the 2nd admendment she also did not advocate the KILLING of anyone. We here in the GOP will take care of our own house, the left-wing takes it to the street let them, the libs are losing. We will take our little revolution to the polls on Election day, AND WE WILL SHOW THEM HOW ITS DONE. We the Western nations are involved in fight for the very survival of clivilation, against an enemy that wants to plunge the world into the DARK AGES, belive it this is the final battle of good vs. evil, not the “TV”, no not the “Twilight Zone”, or “Star Trect”. You told me to just “shut up”, no never ever.

As a clever hint.

Senator websites are lastname.senate.gov

for example Mccain.senate.gov send him an email reminding him who pays his salary.

Congresscritter websites are lastname.house.gov

Bury them in Email. Please don’t use vulgar language etc.

make your points concise and clear. Make your points often, and encourage others to do so as well. Be proactive, you think of a topic. Start rounding up your friends. Don’t pass stupid “you won’t believe this…” email messages around. Pass bullet points so that your friends nationwide can be on message when they contact their representatives in DC.

To sum up:

round 1 bullet points:

- Seal the borders

- no benefits for illegal behavior, no SS eligibility, payments, etc.

That should do for starters.

birdman — Did you know that you were previously banned from this site because of your unique brand of “humor”? That’s why you couldn’t log in for two weeks. I decided to give you another chance when we re-opened registration — and here you are, making funny little “jokes” again.

Let me be clear. If I see one more comment like this from you — joking about violence, or minorities, or what have you — you’re gone. And you won’t be allowed back when registration opens up again later.

Okay?

haakondahl: You sir are trying to put words into my mouth, anyone here can see that. You think that we here should “shut up” that I should “shut up”, never. You want us to sell our SOUL, never, you want to turn us around never. The left can take it to the streets we will go to the polls. Right-Wingers are people that effect change through “the rule of law and social conventions”, the Left-Wing, tries to effect chang through “Anarichy and Mayhen”, pitting one group against another.
