Senate’s version of hardline: no amnesty for convicted felons

posted at 1:09 pm on May 17, 2006 by Allahpundit

Just the sort of hardnosed, line-in-the-sand politics I’ve come to expect from them on immigration. Jeff Sessions is demanding a fence, which should make for some entertaining squirming from Frist and company.

Dan Riehl says something sounds so familiar here, but he can’t quite put his finger on it. Wait, yes he can. The new poll from Rasmussen has Americans split right down the middle, 39-39 with 22% unsure, on Bush’s approach to immigration — but note the consensus on penalties for employers. Speaking of which, the union angle in this story should be good for a post from Kaus, who’s been arguing for months that illegal immigration hurts the left as much as it does the right. We’ll see.

A hundred thousand people are expected in D.C. today to rally on behalf of open borders. The big M might be there to cover it. Stay tuned.

Update: SFPH has a monster round-up. Look whom he says is Sessions’s new best friend. Positively Kausian!

“Operation No Fences”
What a great idea!!!!
Might as well get some extra keys made for your house, car, and anything else you own, because they won’t be yours for long.
Yep, since they can trespass into out country why not let them trespass into our homes.
Hell, might as well leave the keys under the matt on the front porch.
They’re gonna take it all anyway.
Most of the illegals by my house have already been doing that for years.

Our number one priority needs to be the defeat of DeWine in the upcoming election. He’s been no help to our cause.
AND keep the great conservatives that came up with and passed H.R. 4437 in the House.

Next, plan your summer vacation as a learning experience for the family. Go to the Alamo, learn/teach about history, non-public school style. Then, meet up with the Minutemen and spend some time helping build the fence, and your family’s character.

Finally, make sure you and your entire family get hunter’s safety licenses and a handgun safety certificate, arm yourselves sufficiently, and spend family time at the range shooting trap and developing skills.

Current at gringoman, “Is George Bush Over?”(Illustrated graphically, guidance suggested for minors.) Does this mean that we now must now do, “Are the Democrats and the Republicans Over?”

gringoman on May 17, 2006 at 2:18 PM

hey NTWR, I’m as frustrated with Mike DeWine as anyone, but putting Sherrod Brown in as a replacement won’t do Ohio any good either…as bad as DeWine is, Sherrod Brown would be a whole lot worse…but I agree with the rest of your post!

If your Senator votes for this immigration package, remember you have a responsibility to become motivated and involved with helping to get that Senator removed.
Hey Virginians, how about faxing Senator Warner and asking him why that day labor pickup point in Falls Church is still in operation? How about writing to the editors of your local papers and asking the same question.
We are the base, we are why they are in Washington now, and if they don’t represent us, let’s remove them!

paulsur on May 17, 2006 at 2:20 PM

In the words of Michael Savage, “Throw the bums out!”

If we don’t take these elites out of office, they will presume they have a mandate to press on business as usual.

The ONLY way to get the attention of these Washington zipperheads is to fire them.

It took us going through Carter to get Reagan. What are you willing to go through to get somebody in there to do what they are supposed to do instead of serving themselves?

robman27 on May 17, 2006 at 2:28 PM

IS IT actually going to take a thrashing for Republicans at the polls in November to wake these people up? The problem with that is, obviously, then it will be too late, since Democrats will have the power they need after that.

Again, we do not allow felons to vote. Anyone who illegally got into this Country should NEVER be allowed to vote, period.

It’s no longer “God Bless America”, it’s…

GOD HELP AMERICA!

NRA4Freedom on May 17, 2006 at 2:28 PM

Canvas-darn. I must admit ignorance about Brown. Maybe just deluge DeWine with angry fan mail.

I’m so sick of this lesser of two evils thing we have going on in politics. But who wants to be under the media’s microscope by becoming a politician? Not me.

I think writing editors of papers really does make a difference. We just need to keep pounding away so the silent majority doesn’t keep feeling like the minority. I always feel hopeful and energized when I see someone write in espousing my beliefs.

Great, exemptions to the deportation would include “hardship cases” and “those who didn’t know a deportation order had been issued for them”. Right. Like they never showed up in court, so ignorance is an excuse? Normally, ignorance of the law is no excuse. In Mexico’s case, is is the ONLY excuse. One felony and THREE misdemeanor counts would disqualify these idiots. Wonder how many have three deportations to their credit already, or is anyone keeping count? And WHO is going to round up the illegals with a felony conviction and/or three misdemeanor counts anyway? The Border Patrol? INS? Jodie Foster? The second time these people surface illegally in the United States they should be put to work making license tags for about five years. That would solve the “doing work at jobs most Americans won’t do” theme.

clyde on May 17, 2006 at 2:30 PM

WHY CAN’T WE JUST TAKE UP MEXICO’S LAWS REGARDING IMMIGRATION???

They even have a clause that allows them to deny citizenship if their “cultural balance” is upset or in danger.

NTWR on May 17, 2006 at 2:33 PM

Also, like the war on drugs, we need to eliminate the demand to get rid of the supply.

Hello GOP, you understood it then, why not now? Big time punishment of employers is needed.

And, I would have a better life if I didn’t have to pay so many dang taxes to support these “immigrants just looking for a better life.” Does that mean I get to break the tax law?
No Taxation Without Representation!!!

NTWR on May 17, 2006 at 2:38 PM

Oh yeah, to continue my vent, clyde: rather than making license plates, I think these people need to help build the wall! Heck, they could even work off their fines by building the wall and getting paid at the rates they were working for (illegally) in the US. Once they’ve worked enough time to pay off the debt and back taxes, well, I don’t know what then.

NTWR on May 17, 2006 at 2:41 PM

Hmmm… one felony…

Its a felony to help Illegal Immigrants, so if any of them helped each other over the border, or kept secret their legal status, its a felony (as well as Conspiricy to commit or aid a felony)…

Three Misdeamenors… One, that they are here illegally is a misdemeanor in and of itself… Two… bet they are working either with false documentation or not paying taxes (underground economy)…. strike two…

If they were ever caught and ordered to appear to a “Immigration” court and did not show? Strike three….

Sounds like under the Senate law, just about every should still be deported!

Romeo13 on May 17, 2006 at 2:52 PM

Common gang let’s get it right! Stop propagating the spin. There are no undocumented aliens or illegal immigrants entering our country, only criminals crossing the border.

We must frame our argument in the appropriate manner and not allow terminology to color anyone’s understanding of who these people are. So it’s CRIMINALS CRIMINALS CRIMINALS til I’m blue in the face CRIMINALS!

We are trying to prevent criminals from entering our country. These are not harmless Frito Bandito’s? This is not the infamous Pedro from “South of the Border!” These are people who broke the law…OUR LAW…and have invaded our country and now demand equality, forcing us to pay for their education and healthcare, and all while taking jobs from our citizens and food from the mouths of American children.

The United States Senate is acting like the Russian Polit Bureau, KGB and Pravda, rolled into one big ball of smug, self-important slugs!

Congress no longer ‘represnts’ us, it RULES us!

ForYourEdification on May 17, 2006 at 3:12 PM

Call your Senators TODAY and tell them no AMNESTY protect our borders first.

birdman on May 17, 2006 at 3:31 PM

Umm… just hit me…

Title 8 Chapter 12 Subchapter II Part VIII @1324

§ 1324. Bringing in and harboring certain aliens

(a) Criminal penalties
(1)
(A) Any person who—

(iv) encourages or induces an alien to come to, enter, or reside in the United States, knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such coming to, entry, or residence is or will be in violation of law;

or
(v)
(I) engages in any conspiracy to commit any of the preceding acts, or

(II) aids or abets the commission of any of the preceding acts, shall be punished as provided in subparagraph (B).

(B) A person who violates subparagraph (A) shall, for each alien in respect to whom such a violation occurs—
(i) in the case of a violation of subparagraph (A)(i) or (v)(I) or in the case of a violation of subparagraph (A)(ii), (iii), or (iv) in which the offense was done for the purpose of commercial advantage or private financial gain, be fined under title 18, imprisoned not more than 10 years, or both;
(ii) in the case of a violation of subparagraph (A)(ii), (iii), (iv), or (v)(II), be fined under title 18, imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both;

Sounds like under this Title, the President, and Senate, who are ENCOURAGING illegal immigration (those who are now trying to get in before amenesty is declared) could be prosecuted and get up to 5 years in Jail… and if it could be prooven they got any Campaign contributions from anyone involved (prooving financial gain) up to 10 years…

I LIKE IT!!!

Any good Conservative Prosecutors out there???

Romeo13 on May 17, 2006 at 3:56 PM

Two words regarding Dewine: Hirtzel Canning. They’ve been importing illegals for years. Guess who’s office is just down the road.

This quote is gonna be famous…..

“BUSH” is the new four letter word.

easy87us on May 17, 2006 at 6:17 PM

How to use this new four letter word…

“I Bush you”.

” You are Bushed”

How to tell that you are being Bushed….just look at any one GOP conservative.

In fact, I have been Bushed badly.

So, no more Bushing around in 2008! Jeb, are you listening? Stay in Florida please.

easy87us on May 17, 2006 at 6:22 PM

Wow! Another great plan from a wayward Congress!

Unfortunately, it does not take into account the tens of thousands of felonies that are plea bargained down to misdemeanors by county and district attorneys plagued by overloaded courts. Nor does it make allowance for bleeding heart, liberal judges who do the same by judicial edict.

In other words, many of the illegal aliens who Congress ‘forgives’ will INDEED be felons!

If the American public knew the extent of malfeasance and how utterly corrupt Congress actually is, the Boston Tea Party would seem in comparison to be a ladies auxiliary afternoon tea!

ForYourEdification on May 17, 2006 at 6:33 PM

If the Senate immigration bill becomes law, I predict the following:

Just as the fall of the Roman Empire began from within, so too will America.

Within the next 100 years, there will be a slow flight of Americans to Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia.

America will cease to exist as it becomes part of Mexico with third-world status.

pocomoco on May 17, 2006 at 8:05 PM

Bush and the Senate have sold out America.

pat on May 17, 2006 at 8:55 PM

BE POSITIVE! BE HUMOROUS!

Brooding would not change a thing. Be positive! Elect Republican again. We can revolt by electing the representatives of our choice. Democracy is our strength!

If you keep on dwelling into the dark feeling of losing the battle, you have surrendered already!

Let us fight one day at a time. Today we fight the Democrats, the spineless Republicans, and Bush. Tomorrow we build a better America. BE POSITIVE! It cannot be worse than the civil war! What make you think that we cannot change the new immigrants to think like us?

Easy87us

easy87us on May 17, 2006 at 9:41 PM

Be Positive… Be humorous… learn Spanish…

Romeo13 on May 18, 2006 at 12:01 AM

I am not positive nor do I feel humorous. I am so damn mad I cannot answer my phone at my business with any remaining civility or social skills!

I just called my two plastic Rhinopublicrats (Snowe/Collins)and reminded them, AGAIN for the 2nd day in a row, that their asses are GONE in NOVEMBER!

If we are going
to have representation that sells this country down the river to this invasion, they will at least be properly labeled as liberal Dems rather than Asses in Elephant suits. The next call I make is to our state Republican wannabe’s to inform them that if they are masquerading and are just more of the spineless slugs we have now, don’t bother to even run. If otherwise, then how can I help you WIN?!

NTWR: I sure hope you don’t really mean that it is just fear of the lefty media’s scrutiny that prevents you from running! I am not taking a slap at you, BTW, just trying to get you to re-examine what you just said. You are espousing the values and convictions that need to be heard. THAT’S WHAT WE NEED!

To fear the MSM’s “microscope” is to be more concerned over your own well being than the principles you claim to stand for. Sounds sort of akin to Congressional voting according to which way the political wind is blowing, doesn’t it?

Sacrifice for the good of all is what we need, whether it is PC or not and whether it invites liberal vitriol or not. In other words, run for office, just fail to succumb to the temptation to become a politician! I agree with everything you have said above otherwise. We need people that are there to represent their constituents and not just to promote their own power.

Birdman: I did visit Monica Crowley’s website yesterday late and LOVED it… Thank you! (What the hell happened to her sister to marry that idiot Alan Colmes?? Bad chromosomes in that family somewhere. Thank God Monica was spared the poisoning!)

Keep slugging…
