Mexican FM: if Guard detains anyone, we’ll sue

posted at 5:21 pm on May 16, 2006 by Allahpundit

Many thanks to Kid from Brooklyn for providing the link and the translation. Key graf:

“Si empieza verdaderamente una oleada de abuso de derechos, si vemos que la Guardia Nacional -contra lo que el presidente de los Estados Unidos ha dicho- empieza a tomar acciones directas de detención de personas, enviaremos más personal a consulados de la frontera y segundo… estaríamos de inmediato presentando demandas a través de nuestros consulados en juzgados locales en contra de esas actividades”, añadió.

KfB’s translation:

“If we begin to see a big wave of human rights abuses; if we see that the National Guard begins to take direct action against the President’s orders, such as detention, then we will direct more of our consulate personnel towards the border, and second…we would immediately begin filing lawsuits through our consulates, in those jurisdictions.

Nice to see the Mexican government following proper legal procedures in the context of immigration. For a change.

Update: Michelle has the results of the Senate vote today, and she’s making a list.

Update: Unabashed open-border advocate/”journalist” Geraldo Rivera: “Get ready, everybody, for $10 artichokes.”

Oh Brother ! Now I have heard everything.

Your consulate personnel with be warmly received, and equally warmly returned upon expiration of their visas.

However, please do not think, because we are humane society, because we are a society that anguishes over human dignity and rights, because we are, in general, a slow burn, that we are therefore stupid.

We can still deal. What have you got?

spd rdr on May 16, 2006 at 5:37 PM

If Mexico really wants to be sure the rights of their citizens are not infringed upon, they should keep them on the Mexican side of the border. I suspect they are treated to more “rights” once they enter the US than they were at home.

Dhimmigrants, one and all!

Kid from Brooklyn on May 16, 2006 at 5:47 PM

A foreign nation threatening to sue us for defending our own sovereignty. Just when you think it couldn’t get any worse. Has this ever happened in history before? Is Bush afraid that if he stands up, Vincente will find another lover? I am waiting for a response from our administration, so far nothing.

If we had a real man as our President instead of a pathetic traitor to his own country, we might at least hear a “Shut the hell up and mind your own business”. But alas, it’s not to be.

Cheney or next-in-line Hastert can fight the GWOT. Bush must go, now!

msplitt on May 16, 2006 at 5:49 PM

This clown must have gone to Harvard or Yale Law. Let’s sue him for all the costs we have incured dealing with the illegals (healthcare, police/border guard, etc ) How about citizens who have been injured by illegals, car accidents, etc. Let’s enter their claims.

Sue us my ass! If we are going to get sued for detaining illegals, let’s make sure we make it count, like with a 2×4 upside the head. I am so sick of the crap we get from Mexico on this issue.

I wonder which “legal scholar” will take up their cause. Oh, let me guess. The ACLU, who we end up paying for anyway when they sue the government. This all SO CRAZY!

I need to duct tap my skull so my brains don’t splatter the walls.

Sorry for the rant. I know it is irrational and emotional, but I had to get it out.

dallas94 on May 16, 2006 at 5:49 PM

Hmmmmm, it does not surprise me one bit. Pretty soon the illegal immigrants will overpower out majority and we will end up hanging in the breeze. I cannot believe that the government doesn’t “Support and Defend the Constitution” like I have while serving in the military. As a recent retiree, it raises my hackles to think that our government kowtows to another nation. I am seriously hoping a decent third party candidate comes up for the 2008 elections, if not I will definately write on in.

Keep up the great work Michelle and Allah

Re: the senate list. Is there any equivalent to impeachment for senators? Sure would be nice to remove a few of the worst RINOs of the lot. Bet at least some of the others would clean up their act in one huge hurry if that were to happen.

Personally, I think $10 artichokes and other expensive produce items would be a wonderful problem to have. It is certainly much more appealing than broken public schools, hospitals, property values, etc.

Furthermore I think we as a country could really get behind a “patriotic duty” to eat more expensive vegetables. Win Win for everyone (especially the kids and even the vegetarians : )

America1st on May 16, 2006 at 5:54 PM

You do know that the Mexican government has retained a Lawyer out of LA to sue Sherrif Arpegio for actually enforceing the Law in his county?

Romeo13 on May 16, 2006 at 5:56 PM

dallas94

What bothers me is that NO ONE in the sdministration has stood up to speak for us, to tell Mexico to go to hell. Not one peep. That a 3rd world piece of crap country can piss all over America, while our president sits by and encourages it, to me is just astounding.

msplitt on May 16, 2006 at 5:56 PM

I agree with you America1, good point.

Romeo13; I might be niave but how can a foreign government sue another another nation?

br8veheart on May 16, 2006 at 6:00 PM

On Michelle’s update it would be great if she could also post a list of those GOP senators and Democratic senators (if there were any) that voted for an enforcement approach. Let’s not make the mistake of nominating any “moderate” senators for 2008 (i.e. McCain or Graham) that are pro-amnesty. Also, it is annoying for some of the most conservative states such as Nebraska and South Carolina to have borderline liberal senators. As a Virginia resident, I’m extremely pleased with George Allen and disappointed with John Warner.

Question: Does anyone have any idea just why Bush is so scared to offend Mexico? Is it the Hispanic vote, or is he worried a left-wing nutcase a la Hugo Chavez will come to power there? With 100,000,000 new immigrants in 20 years, we’ll be lucky if a Hugo Chavez is not in power HERE in near future.

Meh. I hate artichokes.

Hoodlumman on May 16, 2006 at 6:01 PM

“Get ready, everybody, for $10 artichokes.”

I don’t like artichokes, anyway. But seriously, you would think people would be screaming instead to make sure these “poor immigrants” get better wages. What Geraldo is saying basically is let the illegals come in, and they can be “used” to keep our produce cheap (because you know, American’s won’t do the job—at those wages). Give me a break.

Rush Limbaugh said today that the Guardsmen can’t legally detain anyone due to posse comatitus law. I don’t buy it.
I would expect the guard could detain anyone that is not a citizen of this country who entered illegally. How could non-citizens have the same legal protections as citizens when they illegally cross our border? They are “invaders” plain and simple. Lets just set up the traditional 3d world refugee camps for them, and when the flies and heat gets to be too much in the camps they will willingly leave. And I don’t care for veggies that much anyway. Also go arrest the friends of Bill, the tyson family for hiring illegals.

gary on May 16, 2006 at 6:11 PM

It’s a toatl joke that we pay $1 for lettuce year-round, and have at least 3 lettuce type choices. I would pay more and agree completely with America1st.
Some savvy business people need to notice the niche market opening up. Just as people pay a premium for “organic” lettuce I bet people would pay more for “certified legal citizen” lettuce or artichokes. I know I would.

Just to add some food for thought, do you think Mexico has maybe given us some major help in the war on terror and that’s why Bush is so amicable to them? It’s a possibility, I guess.

NTWR on May 16, 2006 at 6:17 PM

We need a celebrity, a Bruce Willis or other big name Republican to stand up and tell Bush he’s a piece of **** and lend support to a 3rd party or Minuteman organization.

I think once the ball gets rolling it will have a snowball effect.

A message to Vicente Fox and his Spanish speaking pimps:

You Mexican hypocrites threatening to sue us scares me almost as much as Nikita Khruschev did when he banged his shoe on the desk atthe U.N.! I yawned.

I hope you south of the border imbeciles keep it up. By the time you’re through, you will have enraged even the ‘stay-at-home liberals’ and made enemies of the only friends you have in this country.

Americans take just so much, you know, and then LOOK OUT!

ForYourEdification on May 16, 2006 at 6:43 PM

From what I understand, when the Guard is acting in a state capacity, it could arrest people. However, when the Guard’s federalized, it’s subject to the posse comitatus law! There’s probably ways to grant exceptions to that old federal law but no idea what they are.

Frankly, I’d be in favor of having the Guard escort those Mexican Consular employees back across the border. Mexico needs our help because it’s not willing, or able, to help itself. But, the most recent behavior of the Mexican government is beyond the pale!

DougW on May 16, 2006 at 6:45 PM

Hmmmm, decisions, decisions…

Would I rather:

A. Get hit on the road by a drunk illegal with no insurance and then die in the only ER left open in town waiting for all his cousins to be treated before me.

-or-

B. Choke on a $10 artichoke and receive prompt care in an efficient, local ER.

Pretty easy choice there.

br8veheart, simple, they pay for an American Lawyer, and then go out and find ONE mexican national who was sent to jail, and pay him to be the plaintif, in a Civil Rights case here in America… thus having standing… (you do know that in Civil rights cases the Feds will pay for all plantifs legal fees if you win? Mexico will only pay if they loose).

Convoluted but happening according to press reports….

gary on May 16, 2006 at 7:16 PM

I said this elswhere today…Just wait. Your mad NOW?
In a year or so when all these illegals have an ID card in their pocket and feel more comfortable, they will DEMAND EQUAL PAY and Equal rights. Those fools (employers) paying illegals under the table now, will have to pay them the same as anyone else. They will have to feed their whole damn family!
Plus, just think of all the lawsuits these people will start up if not ‘treated’ properly.
Someone above mentioned suing Mexico. Any lawyers out there?

shooter on May 16, 2006 at 7:18 PM

Nebraska, like California, Illinois, Washington, Kansas, New York and Texas, grants Mexicans and other illegals entry into their colleges WITHOUT PAYING OUT OF STATE TUITION. That usually triples the cost, and is borne by taxpayers in those states. Nebraska just passed the law. Of course, American citizens from states other than these have to pay the triple cost.

Also, 27% of the Federal prison population is illegal Mexican inmates, and these are the most violent predators, rapists, murderers and child molesters in the system. Costs American taxpayers over a billion dollars a year to keep them locked up.

clyde on May 16, 2006 at 7:25 PM

This is exactly why Bush is a liar and a moron:

In Ciudad Juarez, Julieta Nunez Gonzalez, local representative of the Mexican government’s National Immigration Institute:

Sending the National Guard “will not stop the flow of migrants, to the contrary, it will probably go up,” as people try to get into the U.S. in the hope that they could benefit from a possible amnesty program, Nunez said.

msplitt on May 16, 2006 at 7:27 PM

Hmmm.. I bet Judicial Watch could help on legal action, if it’s at all possible. How about a class action lawsuit against Mexico and all illegal aliens here in this country?

msplitt on May 16, 2006 at 7:29 PM

Romeo13; Thanks I didn’t know that, just another straw on this old camel’s back.

br8veheart on May 16, 2006 at 7:31 PM

msplitt; not that’s an idea. Class Action Lawsuit against Mexico and the Illegal Aliens and say local governments for using my tax dollars on non-citizens…

Shack on May 16, 2006 at 7:39 PM

Looks like Congress has shown they are still deaf to the
voices of the voters. Putting troops along the border
to secure it better has been defeated. The worker program
has to be installed first, because the illegals are more
important than the safety of the taxpayers.
BTW it doesn’t matter what the president says, Congress
must pass the laws to put his policies in effect.

quark2 on May 16, 2006 at 7:53 PM

There’s a sheriff in Oregon who is billing
the Mexican government for the expenses of
jailing illegal mexicans. Not that he will
get a check in the mail.

quark2 on May 16, 2006 at 7:55 PM

If they see human rights abuses, they might think they are still in Mexico and feel right at home.

Mexico needs a lesson in who has the bigger stick. We’ve been trying to treat them like an equal, and that doesn’t work.

Hening on May 16, 2006 at 8:13 PM

The Mexican government won’t have to spend a peso of their own money for lawyers or lawsuits. The ACLU will jump on this issue as soon as a Guardsman says “excuse me sir, can I see your green card?”

right as rain man on May 16, 2006 at 8:18 PM

Great. Let us see how the Democrats and Bush deal with this one. I love to see them sue us. They should get serious and hire the ACLU to defend them.

Only till then would American extinguish all hopes on the Democrats.

Kennedy said to the illegals…”I have a dream”…and this is his dream coming true.

If our elected leaders were the board of directors of our corporation, we the shareholders would remove many of them immediately for being incompetent. The oath they all took means nothing and we the people mean nothing. We need new leadership sooo bad.

Rational people realize that thru simple enforecment of existing laws and the elimination of entitlements and anchor babies, the incentive to come will dwindle. Some will return, some will be returned, and some will accept our existing, hard earned and cherished path to citizenship. Seal the border, enforce the laws. No amnesty.

This is the simple answer. Just do what should have been done all along, follow the law. Attrition is powerful, a natural thing that only takes a little time.

The only question I have is what is it going to take to make this happen.

mcviper on May 16, 2006 at 11:27 PM

WC on May 17, 2006 at 12:00 AM

Human rights abuses? Arresting law breakers is now a human rights issue? I think the mexicans have listened to the prattle of American Civil Liberties Union – ooops, excuse me – the ‘American Criminal Liberties Union’ – too long.

WC on May 17, 2006 at 12:03 AM

Let them sue and be damned!

I cannot beleive the craveness by these scum, and I’m not happy at ALL with the President right now, either.

I’ve heard of BDS (Bush Derangment Syndrome) but after last night I think a lot of us are suffering a different BDS (Bush Depression Syndrome)

How in the WORLD is America supposed to absorb another 100,000,000+ MORE illegal ALIENS (I refuse to call them immigrants) with Social Security almost broke NOW? Most of these illegals will be bringing their families with them and their old folks will be elegible for SS payments, their wives will be eligible for welfare.

I think the President has written a check that America can’t cash, and our children’s children’s children will STILL be suffring for it.

Michelle said it on her site; call call call.

I called today, I’m going to call tomorrow (although I wasn’t able to get through to Frist). Send email too, to make sure you get through. I encourage targeting specifically anyone up for re-election this year, and really probe for their ‘soft spot’. The final vote hasn’t happened yet, we can effect change.

Similarly, give kudos to those House and Senate leaders who are holding the line. This is the only hope we have.

linlithgow on May 17, 2006 at 1:27 AM

We should ask all these “illegals” to take a lawyer or two home with them, when they return to Mexico… That’s the next group of interlopers we need to eradicate from this country.

Bob Mileti on May 17, 2006 at 6:05 AM

Evidently I can’t see the Big Picture. I don’t understand the position of the President, or the Senate. To allow the illegals to stay (without any penalty), to allow them to keep coming, to allow them “rights” of citizens (other than voting which will be next), is beyond me.

$10 Artichokes……..
Wow….
What will I do without them?
Geraldo the moron speaks again.
Americans are sick and tired of catering to outsiders.
Some ignorant illegal immigrant expecting us to jump through hoops for a pop. of people who only make 4-5% of our economy. (Probably not even that much)

Kramer on May 17, 2006 at 7:59 AM

If we just shoot them when they illegally cross the border and leave the bodies lie the next wave will get the message.
We have the right to secure our borders. Just send a warning to these other countries, and put up signs stating that this is how we are going to start dealing with these law breakers and then follow through. We are in a war on terrorism and can’t afford to just let aliens walk across
the borders anymore.
“Use of deadly force in this area has been authorized”
The flow will drop to a mere trickle within a month.
I know it’s harsh, but decades of talk doesn’t seem to work.

Kramer on May 17, 2006 at 9:38 AM

Mexican illegals are already beginning to act like Americans.
Today they’ve filed a lawsuit against Tyson, the chicken and meat packing outfit, accusing them of “not paying workers for the time it takes them to get dressed for the job and walk to their work stations”. Tyson has some 25,000 workers, mostly Mexicans, and it seems like they’ve reaped what they’ve sown. So much for cheap chicken. $10 a pound chicken? What will Geraldo think?
