Video: Michelle vs. O’Reilly on Bush’s speech

posted at 11:02 pm on May 15, 2006 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

The boss is back from Fox News studios, where she watched the speech in the green room with Tom Tancredo. No joke. The earth quakes from the force of such concentrated anti-illegal outrage!

Then she went on the air and gave Bill both barrels. In a good-natured way, of course.

President Bush, by not listening to his base on immigration can only mean one thing, the Republican’s internal poll numbers are indicating that they will not lose the House or Senate in 2006. If the polls showed other-wise, tonight’s speech would have been entirely different.

pocomoco on May 15, 2006 at 11:28 PM

Go get him, Michelle! If ol’ Bill had one, he’d have waved the white flag :)

Mike O on May 15, 2006 at 11:32 PM

I love MM. Bill O’Reilly, though right on a lot of issues, is an insufferable horses rear end.

gmoonster on May 15, 2006 at 11:34 PM

pocmoco, see what the numbers are next week. Trust me, if they don’t turn this around, it will be Speaker Pelosi. (One guy that was in the Reagan White House STILL owes me $5 for a polling number I bet him on in 1976.)
Speaker Pelosi is a scary though but it would sure wake up things, and I have ultimate faith in her incompetance.

Mike O on May 15, 2006 at 11:35 PM

Keep kicking butt Michele until the pundits and the politicians start listening. Half a**ed measures are not a start, they’re a distraction.
Border control now! Arrest some CEO’s of the major corporations exploiting immigrant labor and put em prison.
When we stop the hiring and the jobs dry up the flood will slow to a trickle.
I have made sure to express my opinion to my elected representatives once a week not to accept the compromise.

Cpilot on May 15, 2006 at 11:38 PM

Practical my ass. In 1986 we were “practical” and look at where we are now. They are talking upwards of 100 million new immigrants. NO COMPROMISE.

Altura Ct. on May 15, 2006 at 11:42 PM

If I hear Bill O say he is looking out for me one more time, I think I’ll puke.

He rolled. 6000 support troops are a political sop and nothing more…

We have 100,000 troops defending Europe… mostly in Germany defending them against… Mongols??? French???

32,700 troops on the Korean border… defending a country which doesn’t want us there, and which can EASILY defend itself.

35,000 troops in Japan defending them from… invasion by… Martians??? Samurai??? Ninjas???? no… thats it… Malaysian Pirates! (cause everyone knows Pirates are way cooler than Ninjas….)

and 6000 part times defending our actual border (along with 12,000 border cops).

Sorry… I must be missing somthing….

Romeo13 on May 15, 2006 at 11:47 PM

Bravo Michelle! You stick to a position that makes perfect sense and is an effective solution – in the case of illegal immigration – enforce existing laws.

Other views seem to be, for lack of a better term, “wishy-washy”, not effecive solutions, and smack of greed by special interests – short term profit for Republicans or percieved power gains by Democrats.

Michelle is putting a voice and face on common sense positions that make sense and are in the best interst of the nation and the United States – not special interests.

Bravo Michelle!

I just saw Michelle on a Factor rerun. It seemed to me like she and Bill were on the same side except Michelle wants more of it. I wish FOX would give her a time slot!

Oh and by the way … Damn she looked good! Hummina hummina! Michelle, if you’re ever in Ft. Lauderdale and ya need a personal tour guide, just gimme a call! Love ya!

Tony737 on May 15, 2006 at 11:55 PM

Bill O’ is looking out for the folks? Will his children go to public school with all of the illegals’ children
? Somehow I doubt it.

calnevari on May 15, 2006 at 11:58 PM

I’m curious if we can find any records of the things that have been said about previous amnesties. What did Reagan actually say about the 1986 amnesty, for instance, when he was about to sign it? Somebody should find that material and archive it on the internet. I’m sure it would be quite revealing; many parallels between today’s crop of politicians and those in 1986 would probably be apparent.

Michelle – Well done! You adroitly gutted Mr. O’Reilly with a smile on your face. He’ll wake up tomorrow and figure it out. . .OUCH!

Good job Michelle! I loved to see Bill not knowing what to say then finally agreeing with you.

Ropera on May 16, 2006 at 12:38 AM

Bill is lookin’ out for the folks, the illegal folks. Why should we compromise with criminals? Why do so many not see invasion of a foreign country as a criminal act?

What is this background check the President spoke of?

Interview:

Julio: No habla Ingles, gringo.
Interviewer: We’re going to have to perform a background check to see if you have ever participated in any criminal activity. *** phones Mexico ***
Vicente: Oh, Julio is ok. He’s my cousin.
Interviewer: Other than entering this country illegally, which is not a criminal offense, since you’re just trying to make a better life for your family, and since some guy in Mexico [your cousin] said you were ok, you pass. Here’s a card of some English conversational phrases they ask you to recite to get your citizenship. And, here’s an American flag lapel pin.

Bill said, “it will stop 60-70% of the chaos” having a few thousand national guardsmen building roads and training people. The 12k border patrol agents haven’t deterred them.

“We have King and Tancredo are going to have to work with Kennedy and McCain to try to find a compromise”. Why? What rule or law says there has to be a compromise? Bill doesn’t get it just like Bush doesn’t get it, NO COMPROMISE!

“… compromise that doesn’t involve people kicking in doors, grabbing babies and throwing them in paddy wagons and drive ‘em back to Matamoras.” WTF? If Bill O’Reilly is an Independent, then Independents are flaming Liberals. He sounded like Hanoi Jane when he said that.

“The compromise is enforcement first, enforcement now.” Excellent response Michelle.

Kristin Powers gave the best response of all I have heard. “What the President did is recite the Senate bill, except for the border stuff.”

RolandHall on May 16, 2006 at 12:39 AM

Michelle had Bill on the ropes, he was out on his feet. Great job Michelle.

birdman on May 16, 2006 at 12:46 AM

Two points that hit me awhile back….

According to a White House spokesman the Guard troops will be there to do their 2 weeks of active training… in other words they will be worthless… bye the time they get there, get organized, and get a bit of training, it will be time for them to go home…

As to construction, correct me if I’m wrong, but Military Units can NOT do construction within CONUS unless there is NO civilian contractor able to do that job… or its a declared National Emergency… and Mexican assertions aside, the border is still part of the Continental United States?

Romeo13 on May 16, 2006 at 12:47 AM

OI used to think that the President was THE primary law enforcement official, but after both Cigarman, and now Bush I realize I must be mistaken.

Ms. Malkin nailed it right on the head on O’Reilly, but that is nothing new. Fox News would do themselves a big service if they gave her a decent time slot.

Maybe I’m missing this, but isn’t a large part of the current Illegal invasion which is currently crossing our border that this provides enormous cover for the next generation of terrorists, or could it be that since they are already in America it no longer matters? I thought we were still at war…

DannoJyd on May 16, 2006 at 1:07 AM

The NG has to be really happy with this lol, 6000 unarmed targets will be stationed along the border for Federalies , Mexican Military and drug cartel target practice?

It’s going to make them feel really good to look around and see the American civilians armed and their not.

Am I wrong or did we just have an early episode of SNL this evening?

AZPatriot on May 16, 2006 at 1:09 AM

More border patrol? How many does it take to watch each Minuteman?

Perchant on May 16, 2006 at 1:13 AM

Each of us has a pretty good idea of what we want done about the illegal aliens/borders. Call your representatives in Congress-that’s what they are there for. Let them know that President Bush has disapointed many of us, and if the Republican led Congress does not show some leadership on this issue, the 2006 election is already over, and we’ve lost.

Doug on May 16, 2006 at 1:16 AM

One thing that seems to be constantly missed by everyone on both sides is this.
Being in the U.S. may not be a felony, but identity theft and the use and possession of false ID’s and fake S.S. numbers are felonies.

Here’s a good article:

Humpty-Dumpty Republicans
By William Rivers Pitt

“George W. Bush, as leader of the Republican party, was the inheritor of this mess. Though he owes his political success to the work of the movement conservatives, Bush’s heart lies with the businessmen. He voiced support for the Senate immigration bill, and then watched as his favorability numbers among the GOP grassroots dropped like a ruptured duck. A recent New York Times/CBS poll placed his approval rating on the immigration issue at 26%, and for the first time, Republicans appear to be abandoning him.”

DiverMike on May 16, 2006 at 2:10 AM

If you’re an O’Reilly-Hannity-Allen pseudo-conservative, whose only problem with immigration is security and the abstract issue of legality, why should you be impressed by talk about securing the border first, talking amnesty later? It’s just mundane wonk talk. Until this debate addresses sheer, politically incorrect quantity, we’re going to get triangulated by mass immigration drones like the Fox News crew. Our ‘08 choices will be disasters like Allen and McCain.

Michelle is awesome, but as long as she’s the only regular independent conservative on television (and, pretty much, she is), she needs to do better than argue the enforcement-first minutiae; she needs to acknowledge what’s keeping that no-brainer from happening: Too many people, the elite Right included, want *more* immigration, and won’t allow increased enforcement until they’re granted it. Hence, O’Reilly’s idiot endorsement of increasing immigration…and Allen’s and Hannity’s…

Tancredo was the same way. I was feeling okay tonight until I saw our paladins dither around the edges. Tancredo and Malkin are pretty much all we have on the TV–even Dobbs is for more legal immigration! How that squares with his worship of the working man, I don’t know, maybe I’m behind.

But when the issue’s gotten as dire as it has, when all the mainstream “right” voices are insisting this is nothing more than a security or legality issue, it won’t do for Tancredo and Malkin to complain about

It’s way, way past time to talk about NUMBERS. The only hope for this issue is a pro-American executive. That’s virtually impossible from the Democrats, and the GOP field is so grim that we can’t tolerate perfunctory complaints about *illegal* immigration anymore; either our candidates acknowledge the issue of numbers or…well…okay, I admit they really have our b&l$ in a grinder, but let us nonetheless not go gently into that good night. But rage, rage against the dying of the Right.

Alex K on May 16, 2006 at 3:24 AM

Michelle, major kudos to you for addressing the straw man argument that “we cannot deport them all so let’s have a plan that deports none.”

You really knocked it right back at Bill O’Reilly when he trotted out that ridiculous “kicking in the doors of millions of people….etc” argument.

Now all we need to do is; Secure the border. Change the 14th Amendment and end automatic citizenship for anyone born here. Stop ALL Social Services/benefits to non-citizens. Enforce the Immigration Laws already on the books. Immediately institute a Tax on all money wired to Mexico from the U.S. Wait a year and then see what is left to do. IMO a very manageable problem then.

America1st on May 16, 2006 at 3:31 AM

One “incentive” to illegal immigration that MUST be eliminated is automatically conferring U.S. citizenship on the children of illegals who are born in this country.

charouh on May 16, 2006 at 5:07 AM

The only thing the President did last night was to reinforce the prevailing thinking that his immigration policies are conceived, implemented and legislated in Mexico City! In fact, he ‘reassured’ el Presidente Fox before his speech, that his measures will be temporary.

There was nothing in his speech, including using the Guard, that will alleviate, reverse or mitigate the current border crisis. In fact, Bush did quite the opposite: He reinforced his stubborn opposition to meaningful reform and urged the do-nothing Congress to pass a bill that is closet amnesty.

George Bush dashed all hope of rescuing or reversing another Bush search-and-destroy mission against the Republican Party.

Do all the Bushs have a ‘read my lips’ problem?

William Teach on May 16, 2006 at 8:05 AM

When will these National Guard Voyeurs be sent to assist Border Patrol agents?

Kramer on May 16, 2006 at 8:27 AM

Excellent job, Michelle! I support all the points the posters are making including the reality that we have too much immigration in general.

We are hauling in the sick and uneducated of the world making them our burden, while introducing exotic illnesses (West Nile virus) and reintroducing old killers (TB and malaria). There is a good reason why people shunned strangers in the past; they carried diseases for which one probably had no immunity.

Our cities consist of enclaves of immigrants from around the world where they continue to speak their language, worship their religions, and generally contribute to the Balkanization of the U.S. We are told by our “betters” that this is good for the country. If this is so, why is the first lesson of sociology courses that homogeneity leads to civic peace and heterogeneity leads to friction?

Re: “Guest workers” — how are we going to make them go home when their time is up if we can’t find those who should be deported and deport them? If they have a child while working here, then what?

Tancredo in ‘08!

Margaret McC on May 16, 2006 at 8:53 AM

On a similar note, how do we know who is eligible for one of these “tamper proof” ID cards? Do they present some documents? What about those documents? How do we know they are real -they are obviously not tamper proof. So many unanswered questions.
Plus, we just lose some freedoms. Now we will all need these cards. Will high schoolers be able to mow the neighbor’s lawn for a few bucks without being verified?
Don’t get me wrong, I can handle jumping through hoops to remain a proud American citizen, it’s a priceless commodoty and I can’t believe its value is being tossed around like poll numbers.

It was refreshing to see O’Reilly rethink on air. And Kirsten shows some chinks in her armor. I bet she really annoys the die hard libs when she can’t help but agree, somewhat, with Michelle. Great job MM.

There can be no compromise. What the President is proposing will flood this nation with more of mexico’s poor. Pressure must be put on mexico. Lock the border down. Return those who don’t belong here. I’m afraid Bush’s plan will only lead to violence. If our elected officials don’t listen to the people………people will eventually take matters into their own hands. War will be inevitable. Buy your weapons now before they decide to circumvent our bill of rights.

I am surprised that almost all of the posts omit any mention that Kristin Powers was also present to contribute the commentary appropriate for the Democratic operative that she is. After Bill weakly tried to defend El Presidente Jorge’s amnesty proposal, he asked Kristin for her opinion. Much to Bill’s surprise, she stated she was in sympathy with Michele’s anger because nothing Arbusto proposed was any different than the travesty of the Senate bill up for consideration. She further stated that had she been Bush, she would have given a speech focusing much more on border security because that was the main concern of those worried about illegal immigration. She then basically said, “What has Bush done to secure the border in his first 5 1/2 years? Zip.”

Of course, a Dem in power would probably have been even worse (assuming that is possible) on securing the southern border, but Kristen was absolutely right. Jorge Arbusto was in charge and he failed us; we can’t blame the Dems for the border fiasco during the time the two el presidentes north and south of the border (?) have conspired to maximize the illegal flow. O’Reilly weakly responded that Bush is trying to secure the border now and we should be grateful for that and that we have to be compassionte to the poor lawbreakers sucking off the American teat. (No, he didn’t quite put the last statement that way!).

I never thought a hack Democratic operative would make more sense on immmigration than O’Reilly. Michelle stood tall as did Tancredo, who was very temperate considering the bilge he had to listen to from El Presidente.

ptolemy on May 16, 2006 at 11:04 AM

Bill has already proven time and time again that he doesn’t “get” Christianity and he doesn’t “get” real conservatism. For the most part, he seems to be “feelings” based, just like most liberal minds are(of course, their reasoning ability is flawed so their feelings are often backwards), and is willing to look the other way in the interest of compromise on many issues.

His ratings seem high though, so he must ring the bell for a lot of people.

NRA4Freedom on May 16, 2006 at 11:09 AM

In the world of reporting on the immigration situation you heard basically two terms:
(1) undocumented alien
(2) illegal immegrant
I would offer a third (3) undocumented illegal immigrant.
The most significant items in last night’s speach IMHO is the digital ID card & enforcement of illegal employment. This now sets the stage for any and all inforcement of whatever plans are established from the congress.
Whithout an ID card there would not be any company employment (the supposed reason for the flight North).
Logical approach:
1-issue the card to all who are here or coming
2-prosecute company executives that allow anyone without a valid card to work.
Therefore, the flow should slow to a trickle. (domestic help only)

Not all illegals are paid in cash. Illegals pay billions into social security by way of payroll deductions . . . they use false SSNs so no one really gets the credit, but the government keeps the money.

Wait until some enterprising plaintiff’s attorney gets hold of THAT lawsuit.

Labamigo on May 16, 2006 at 11:35 AM

Who cares? It’s drop in the bucket compared to the many billions more paid out for health care, welfare, food stamps, and not to mention schools. Our highways would be less congested, hospitals less crowded, insurance cheaper. I don’t mind paying more for foodstuffs and some services. Hell, jack up the price on everything. It’s well worth it to repel an invader that will eventually rob us of everything, including our language.

darwin on May 16, 2006 at 11:50 AM

Labarigo: My next door neighbor lays paving stones for A living his boss employs twelve illegals they all have fake social security numbers and pay taxes. This should be stopped. I say stiff fines to employers who hire illegals, if they can’t find A job then will go home.

birdman on May 16, 2006 at 11:53 AM

Bill O’Reilly used to be against the Amnesty proposals but then he flipped and has become an advocate of giving the Illegals a free pass.

He has fallen for the Politically Correct sympathy for Illegals that “just want to feed their children”

He is a hypocrite. On one hand he says he is looking out for the folks then on the other hand is for Amnesty for Criminals.

Jeff Sessions just came out with a report that if the current bill in the senate is passed it will result in 100-200 million Legalized Illegals.
http://www.heritage.org/Research/Immigration/wm1076.cfm

That is 25% if the current population of the United States of America which will result in the destruction of our Country as we know it. In addition, the financial costs will cost upwards of 50 Billion a year.

The border with Mexico needs to be locked down.
However, taking all things into consideration, that’s not going to happen overnight.

I felt the President didn’t offer to do enough to secure our borders, but I also feel that he is not even going to get what little he asked for.

Joatmoaf on May 16, 2006 at 12:35 PM

chicagoray on May 16, 2006 at 4:31 PM

Immigration was a good thing, when it was supervised by the grownups. But now most of our leaders are really just politicians, and they seem unable to foresee consequences, or even to distinguish between immigrants and illegal aliens. Close the border, give the employers of illegals a 3 month amnesty period to change over to legals, and then focus on letting in the relatives of legal immigrants of every nationality first. Lots of proven-to-be honest, hardworking people are here, trying sometimes for years to bring their families back together, and now they are looking at the prospect of waiting for us to absorb 20 million illegals first, give or take a few million. That’s not right. Why should we even talk about legalizing those who jumped the turnstile before those who have been in line for years?

It’s time to get at least somewhat selective, and give priority not based on whether you’re already here, but on education level, ability/willingness to work, having a stable sponsor, and other common-sense criteria. Kind of like you thought we did, before you knew better.

NellE on May 16, 2006 at 5:32 PM

I don’t know about Kirstens rudeness.
I watched it twice and I saw Bill talking to Michelle as an equal. patiently trying to see her point while at the same time trying to make some of his own.

More than 2/3 of this particular video was spent between them and they were giving each other a chance to speak, which might be normal for Michelle but is totally ABnormal for O’Reiley.

When Powers came on he slipped back into his default mode and started wittily interupting her and making counterpoints in the middle of every point she tried to make.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a hardcore conservative (I don’t like saying ‘Republican” anymore because the party seems to have been watered down) of the Reagan kind.

I’m also not stupid, and to blow someone off without even letting them make their case is foolish.
It means nothing less than you have already underestimated them, and THAT is the most foolish thing one can do to an opponent.

Listen to them, no matter how stupid their ideas might be, but at least hear them.
That way you know what to research, what to look for, and how to effectively attack their position.

Politics is war and Rule # 2 of war is, “Never underestimate your enemy”.

Rule # 1 is, “Always have a plan B”

One of the main problems with the Republican party that I’ve noticed since Bush 1 is that they have constantly underestimated the left, or even worse, considered the lefts position as a non-issue.
So they ignore it (whatever the cause may be) and put it off, until all at once it’s a front burner item that has to be dealt with RIGHT NOW.
But since they’ve ignored it, they have no ammunition to attack it effectively.

So what happens?
They comprimise. They allow just a little bit more of the Fundamental ideology of Conservatism to be chipped away.

First and foremost, There Is No Such Thing As A MODERATE Conservative.
Period.

The Republican party has been wooing Moderate Democrats with the results that they also bring along some Liberal ideas.
That causes divisiveness and a house devided against itself cannot stand. Neither can a political party.

They should instead go back to their roots. Try to woo back the conservatives who left due to dis-agreements with the direction of the party, not change with the polls.
Polls are meaningless anyway so why would anyone rely on them?

As to my previous post.
Did anyone read the ticker at the bottom of this clip?
I always do when I watch the news.
Anyway, did you happen to notice the one where the ACLU is already complaining about the ID cards?

There WILL be lawsuits and I’m afraid Bush WON’T even get what little he asked for.
Never EVER underestimate your enemy, and the left IS the enemy.

Joatmoaf on May 16, 2006 at 6:07 PM

Michelle made the only significant point (right over O’Reilly’s head) that adding new programs, policies, procedures, whatever makes little sense if you’re not going to enforce any of them anyway.

Nothing will be done about these invaders.
Soon we will all have to cater to their every ignorant whim.
Votes, Votes, Votes, Votes, Votes, Votes, Votes, …………
Doesn’t matter if the people voting can’t even read the ballot cards as long as you put pictures on them.
Stupid leeches.
Protesting in our streets for our rights.
