I’m not surprised about that. Has he been in the Senate that long? Wow.

I checked the Wikipedia link to “The Immigration and Nationality Services Act of 1965″. Did you notice the photo? THERE’S the cast of characters that gave us this immigration mess! (Don’t blame me – I worked for Goldwater in ‘64. I was too young to vote for him, however.)

dman on May 15, 2006 at 5:24 PM

Reading the “Floor Debates” section in the Wikipedia article, it’s not just our President that has a lot of ’splaining to do”. Read the comments of Teddy versus William E. Miller (remember him??). Who has history proven correct? The libs have NO credibility on this issue.

dman on May 15, 2006 at 5:38 PM

dman: If I am not mistaken 85% of all legal immigration must come from third world countries. I have A friend who is Greek his cousin who is A policeman on one of the Greek islands and has been trying to immigrate to the U.S. for the last eight years, with no sucess. I told my Greek friend, “if he were from some third world country and A drug dealor, or Muslem he would be welcome with open arms”. I was also A big fan of Goldwater in “64″, I was also to young to vote. I did notice the photo, its old hat isn’t it, just kiss ass.

birdman on May 15, 2006 at 5:42 PM

Did you notice Myra Hacker’s comment about the “high” 5-percent unemployment rate (1965)? Folks, read this article. It is “dead on” regarding the immigration issues we face today. It should be referenced in future Vents.

Talk about those who forget history having to repeat it!!!

Phytogirl79: If you vote for the Dems. in eithor 06 or 08 you will regret for it the rest of your life. The lice that leads this party will make A mess of this wonderfull country we call home. Shillary Clinton, John Kerry, Al Gore and the rest hate this country and what we stand for, our values, our religon, and in comtempt for our military. They would like nothing more than to turn the U.S. into A Socialist Utopia.

dman: The libs have no credibility on any issue, they have all the answers, and they are always wrong.

birdman on May 15, 2006 at 6:05 PM

Neither the Republicans or Democrats have credibility on the border issue.

Both parties need to heed the call to secure the border and stop the influx of illegals.

Once that is accomplished – then and only then – can we make an effective plan to deal with the illegals who are already here.

I worked in México for about 3 years. I was required to have an FM-3 Work Visa issued by the Mexican government. They required a police background check before issuing the visa. Why is it unreasonable for the U.S. to require the same?

I fully expect to be disappointed – nay, infuriated – tonight. However, I must remind myself that President Bush’s sister-in-law, Jeb’s wife, Columba, is from Leon, Guadalajara, Mexico. That fact simply has to cloud GWB’s thinking on the subject. What a terrifying mess…

Aunt B on May 15, 2006 at 6:17 PM

birdman:

The debate over the 1965 Immigration Act proves your arguments to Phytogirl79. The actions of the Dems when they last controlled all branches of the Federal Government (which ended with Nixon’s election in 1968) reminds us not to ‘throw out the baby’. As much as I’m POed about the current situation, this retrospective gives me chills. We have to be smart about all this.

dman on May 15, 2006 at 6:18 PM

I forgot about Carter. He only gave us the current Iran situation. But that’s another thread.

First post to your site, and proud to join in with such a straight thinking group!

Now, someone please help me understand: Why can’t President Bush recognize that dealing gently with an assualt on national sovereignty and security at our back door (Mexico) totally destroys his credibility in the fight at our front door (war on terror.)?

I believe these were requested quite awhile ago but if anybody supplied links I didn’t see them. Sorry if I just missed them, but in case I didn’t, Blue Silver (and anybody else who might want them) here are some cero peso links — both for DNC and RNC versions.

This is not an immigration issue; it’s an invasion issue.

If I believe that you live in a more desirable home than I do, should I be encouraged in thinking that I can trespass, break in, get comfortable, and then expect you to be humane, assume my motives were pure and driven only by my misfortune, forgive my lawlessness, and condone my behavior by asking me and other members of my family “already there but refusing to leave” to “come out of the shadows” and stay with you forever as your guests just because we sweep the floor, pull some weeds or grow some tomatoes in your garden? . . and would you be willing to do that over & over again as I sent for more and more family and friends to come and join me year after year? ! ! . . . even after we had the audacity to take your family crest, turn it upside down, place our family crest above it and arrogantly wave it in your face in your own home? Would you truly reward me ( and all the others with me ) with permanent guest status if I invaded your home and your land, or would you call for law enforcement and have me promptly removed? What percentage of Americans do you believe would accept a home invasion and reward the invader with guest status? That’s at the heart of what our officials in Washington are debating over right now.

INVASION – Enter a country with a hostile army, VIOLATE A COUNTRY’S BORDERS or Neutrality . The Act of Invading . . .
(pathology) the spread of pathogenic microorganisms or malignant cells to new sites in the body . .

Amnesty does nothing to address the medical consequences of millions of illegal invaders crossing our borders. While politicans often mention there are 43 million without health insurance in this country, the report by Medical Attorney Dr. Madeleine Pelner Cosman, Ph. D., estimates that at least 25 percent of those are ILLEGAL aliens and the the percentage could be as high as 50.

Many illegals harbor fatal diseases that were vanquished in the States long ago – such as, malaria, leprosy, plague, polio, dengue, Chagas, and the new Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis. My great-grandmother died of tuberculosis at the young age of 36 ! ! ! Many illegals entering this country have tuberculosis; each one coughs and can infect 10 to 30 people, who will not show symptoms immediately; the fatality rate of those infected is about 60 percent because of MDR-TB, which until recently was endemic to Mexico. Treatment of MDR-TB costs between $250,000 – $1 million per patient; those working in “jobs that Americans are unwilling to perform” obviously would be in the lowest wage scales and therefore would be highly unlikely to be contributing any taxes as well as being unable afford the medical treatments. According to Dr. Cosman’s study, 84 CALIFORNIA hospitals have closed or are closing their doors as a DIRECT RESULT of the rising number of illegals and their non-reimbursed drain on our already beleaguered healthcare system; this is due to the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act of 1985, which mandated treatment by hospitals of the uninsured without reimbursement to the hospitals. The CIS found in 2004 that uninsured aliens annual medical treatment costs run approximately $2.2 BILLION.

Congress has ALREADY passed no less than SEVEN amnesties for illegals starting in 1986. With the last amnesty, Congress promised STRICT enforcement of immigration laws, and NO more amnesty in the future. THOSE PROMISES WERE BROKEN ! ! Mahmud Aboulhalima, a leader in the 1993 Trade Center bombing, was legalized as a seasonal agricultural worker as part of the 1986 amnesty ! In Los Angeles, 95 percent of outstanding homicide warrants are for illegal aliens. The deadly 18th Street Gang there has an estimated 20,000 members, with over half of them illegal aliens, according to a ranking member of LAPD. The LA-based MS-13 ( Mara Salvatruchka ), whose membership was originally Salvadorans, now numbers 50,000 – with 10,000 in Los Angeles alone.

When I cast my vote this fall, I will be looking for candidates and putting all my support behind those who have put immigration enforcement FIRST and said NO “guestworker” programs ! ! If there are no incumbents to choose from, hopefully there will be new candidates to fight for the AMERICAN citizen and challenge those in office who are complacent or compliant toward illegals flooding into our country ( come on Michelle, say that you’ll run for office, pleeeeaaasee ! ). For the love of our country, we need people in office who are capable of THINKING and ACTING LIKE UNITED STATES representatives ! ! I think body snatchers have come in from Mexico and possessed the hearts and minds of California’s Senators ( I’m sure Vicente Fox already took over Bush ) who seem to care MORE about illegal aliens than their own constituents and fellow citizens ! ! Washington is out of touch with what the average citizen is experiencing. Those across America who want to voice their opinions to government officicals should enlist at http://www.numbersusa.com/

Great vent Michelle!

Here’s a copy of an email I just sent to the RNC:

“Subject: Illegal Immigration

I have been voting Republican for over 30 years, but I’ve just about had enough of this BS. The War on Terror can never be successful without securing our borders. If this Administration and this Congress don’t get serious about illegal immigration, I will be voting Libertarian in November and in 2008.

1. Close the borders now
2. Forget the Guest Worker (amnesty) program
3. Vigorously prosecute employers who hire illegals
4. Stop the govenment handouts to those who disrespect our laws and our sovereignty

Do those four things and they’ll go home without having to deport them.

This is a conservative grassroots movement that you guys better pay attention to, or you will become an irrelevant party. Please return to the principles of Common Sense and integrity that Republicans have stood for for so long.”

Michelle,

You are doing a fantastic job of destroying the lie/myth of “unbiased” reporting. Your bias comes through, loud and clear and it’s a breath of fresh air after decades of stale, mildewy, liberal-bias-cloaked MSM. I haven’t watched network news in months. Hot Air is one of the first blogs I visit every day. This is one listener who agrees with your worldview. But, please, be careful not to become haughty. It’ll get awful easy with your soaring popularity.

vanepst on May 15, 2006 at 7:46 PM

TOMAS,
You are one of them , arent you. I bet you carried a Mexican flag the first march, then were told to carry an American flag. You might be an American citizen, but your true ‘colors’ have shown through. You pretend like following our President is patriotic, but you really just want open borders for Mexicans.
Nice back door try though. Are you still trying to get in somewhere?

shooter on May 15, 2006 at 8:09 PM

take a lesson from the music industry. Millions of people were file sharing, they were losing billions it seemed impossible to stop. Well we all know what happened there.

Arrest the top 20 employers of illegals, put them in jail for a year with a big fine, splash it all over the news and presto end of problem.

rdimond on May 15, 2006 at 8:14 PM

Here’s a couple of things to consider.

1. AP NEWS
Phillip Borden
Associated Press

MAY 6, 2006

On May 1st, as a result of the Mexican ( aka: illegal alien) boycott,
national retailers reported 4.2% lower sales for the day, with a 67.8%
reduction in shoplifting ..

2. And much more to the point on the topic at hand:

“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes
an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone
else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace,
or origin.
But this is predicated on the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an
American…There can be no devided allegiance here. Any man who says that he is an American,
but something else also, isn’t an American at all.
We have room for but one flag, the American flag… We have room for but one language, and that
is the English language… and we have room for but one sole loyalty, and that is a loyalty to
the American people.”

Teddy Roosevelt 1907

Mexico is not our friend. They teach their school children that the US stole Texas, New mexico and every other piece of real estate that we kept them from stealing from us.

I’m not at all satisfied with this speech.

Joatmoaf on May 15, 2006 at 8:22 PM

Well, I didn’t get through the entire speech before going right over the edge. Screaming at the radio. It totally astounds me that the same administration that surrenders on the idea of deportation because of the logistic challenges expects us to believe that an overwhelmed INS organization CAN manage a “guest worker” program.

I mean, please.

BTW, this site is STELLAR!!! Thanks so much for it.

skeeter on May 15, 2006 at 8:49 PM

I have to admit that I agree there is no realistic way to kick millions of people out of the country. Catch and release is the proof we can’t even keep track of them long enough to get a court date. But for the life of me, I can’t imagine people lining up to pay fines and taxes when there are no real reasons to become Americans.

What we need are disincentives for all those people who “live in the shadows”? How about demanding US paperwork for school registration? When I taught ESL in public schools, it was illegal for us to ask for a green card to register a child. How about not offering automatic citizenship if you are born to illegals? If you are here without citizenship, you should be treated like a foreign national – completely unentitled to the benefits of citizenship.

I would love to see people assimilate because the more people get involved in the system, work hard to improve their lives through the amazing social mobility our society affords, the more likely they are to want to hang onto their money and vote conservatively BUT people need a good reason to assimilate and good reasons not to abuse the system.

George wasn’t even remotely tough enough tonight.

Cate on May 15, 2006 at 9:00 PM

The President is touting amnesty. He can wrap his proposals up in whatever wrapping paper he likes and put as many pretty bows on it as he wants, but in the end his proposals are tantamount to AMNESTY. This is a slap in the face to all who have followed the legal route and respected the laws of the United States, I being one of them. Those ILLEGAL immigrants do not deserve preferential treatment and being allowed to stay with so called “penalties” leading to citizenship is not penalization it is a REWARD. America needs to wake up and fight back and the minuteman organization is a good start, neither the Republicans or the Democrats will stand up and enforce the law and the border; the only things on their minds are VOTES.

davidfoneill on May 15, 2006 at 9:07 PM

Since Bush cannot separate border security from status adjustment, the House will have to do it for him. I could have cared less what the man had to say tonight. I want action, not rhetoric. This shows the need to ratchet up the pressure on our House members and to throw as much fear as we can into the Senate, the joke that it is.

Any “comprehensive immigration reform” that doesn’t seal the border and enforce the laws first is a fraud. Period. Tonight only emphasized that point.

godhelpUSA on May 15, 2006 at 9:11 PM

Ok guys (birdman specifically) I was being facetious. I will never vote for a democrat. I am a republican tried and true. I do however believe the republicans need a little kick in the behind. I promise I will never joke about voting dem again.

For the record, I love this website. It is wonderful to hear so many people sharing ideas. I have learned a lot reading these blogs. I am still new with the political life.

Phytogirl79 on May 15, 2006 at 9:14 PM

And dont worry. I would rather maroon myself on an iceburg than vote for Hillary clinton!

Phytogirl79 on May 15, 2006 at 9:15 PM

OK, here’s my first post. Like it or not, we’re going to have “guest workers” with a path to citizenship. Seems to me that path should include a two-year detour through Iraq or Afghanistan (or wherever). What better way to assimilate than to spend a couple of years toting a rifle alongside America’s finest citizens?

RedWinged Blackbird on May 15, 2006 at 9:20 PM

Watched the speech, saw MM on O’Reilly (always a pleasure). O’Reilly is playing the old “happy medium, any progress is good progress” garbage. He, like the elected members of MAJORITY party in congress, needs to be reminded that we are in the MAJORITY. The way things are going that will not be last indefinitely. I would encourage them to throw some MAJORITY weight around and pass a real immigration bill that enforces our border, punishes employers who hire illegals and provides no new amnesty legislation (we have plently of laws on the books already). If I was being railroaded out of town, I would make a ruckus… especially if it might get me re-elected and would allow me to sleep at night knowing I carried out my responsibility as an elected official (representing constituents)… wouldn’t you?

RobertCSampson on May 15, 2006 at 9:33 PM

The speech was exactly as forecast, promises of border security in return for de facto amnesty. It will be easy to tell right away whether he is at all serious – all he has to do is enforce Simpson-Mazzoli and go after employers, which he can do today. Unless he does that, we know enforcement is just a smokescreen to pass amnesty. I’m not optimistic.

Orcaswa on May 15, 2006 at 9:47 PM

The only thing comprehensive about his plan was the amnesty and the guest woker program.

No comprehensive security was proposed.

The biggest joke was his foolproof ID proposal. How does giving guest workers foolproof IDs prevent illegal immigrants from getting jobs? Illegal immigrants use fake drivers licenses and social security cards all the time. Simply preventing guest worker ID proof is not going to prevent the fradulent use of other documents.

He is trying to pull the wool over our eyes. What a clown.

I am somewhat confused here. Pres Bush spoke about a Mexican who came here as a youngster, picked farm produce, and when he was able, he joined the USMC. And now, sadly, he was seriously wounded in Iraq. Pres Bush praised him, and rightfully so.

However, I asked a recruiting sargent about citizenship being a factor to join the military because I hear how illegal aliens are currently serving. According to the sargent, a person MUST be either a person BORN in America, or have a Green Card (be a registered legal alien) to enlist in the military.

So, my question is why is Pres Bush praising that Marine who evidently was here in America LEGALLY? The problem is ILLEGAL ALIENS, not those who enter America LEGALLY.

What does praising a heroic American have to do with illegal aliens????? How is this suppose to reassure me that all MIGHT be well?

The False Dervish on May 15, 2006 at 10:06 PM

Write your Congressmen and women and tell them, “NO DEAL!” Bush is a liar and a traitor. He just told the enemy the temporary sprinkle of 6K National Guard troops will not be detaining anyone or actually guarding the border. That’s “giving aid and comfort to the enemy.”

Tom Tancredo for President in ‘08. I will NOT be voting for anyone voting for amnesty. I will NEVER vote Liberal because I have a brain. It looks like now is the time Independents will start making big moves. Why Tom Tancredo has not put his hat in the ring for ‘08 is beyond me. He doesn’t need support from the Republican party. He can get more than enough money from the US citizens who support him. If he did come out and say he’s running with a “NO MORE ILLEGAL AND NO AMNESTY” platform, nobody else would be able to touch him without doing the same.

Go Tom!

RolandHall on May 15, 2006 at 10:16 PM

Nothing gets done without severe punishment of employers, including those that hire jobs ‘contract’ (where the ‘boss’ is the only legal). Reduce demand, supply will go elsewhere.

Bordergate is kind of blang. How about Withoutagate? Wallessgate? Lawlessgate? Or maybe a Spanish name?

Mike O on May 15, 2006 at 10:23 PM

RolandHall:

I don’t think Bush is a liar or traitor. On some issues he’s been right on. He’s just got a major blind spot on immigration. However, I totally agree with you that we need to barrage Congress with our opposition to any sort of amnesty deal. If everyone on this blog and other similar blogs emailed and called their congresspeople, the RNC, and the White House, it would get serious notice. 6 million? So why in hell is it impossible to get rid of 12 million? Shuck and jive BULL****.

Either he lied before or he’s lying now.

maxmerc on May 15, 2006 at 10:41 PM

Orcaswa…

Bush swore to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. Suggesting we follow the rule of law by not enforcing it, is not protecting or defending the Constitution.

Since when did it become policy to pander to the leader of another country? When did the President of Mexico become more important than the American citizens?

Why didn’t Bush come out and tell us a story tonight about a American born citizen who joined the military and fought for his country?

I don’t know what he’s selling but I’m not buying it. FYI… I have ALWAYS voted ONLY Republican. I will never vote Liberal but I will vote for any Independent against any Republican who puts others above US citizens.

I voted for Bush twice. If he could run again, I’d vote against him… twice!

RolandHall on May 15, 2006 at 11:04 PM

Wow… it boggles the mind to think how this administration and Republicans in congress are squandering there time in leadership.

I am extremely angry.

Although it would be easy for me to give up and say that I will no longer support the Republicans I know that that cannot be my reaction.

The conservative agenda has come a long way in the last 20 years. As much as we wish for things to finally come to fruition… we must not lose heart when we don’t get everything we want.

We have a long way to go still. We must remember that this is a war. It always has been. We constantly need to fight and stand up for we believe in.

Although it will be a slow process, time will pass and slowly, if we don’t give up, our values will begin to permeate those in leadership and more importantly those younger leaders coming up the ranks.

Continue to build the base. Our future lies with the up and coming leaders from this movement.

I have great hope for the future.

Sorry about the rambling.

I’m fit to be tied! 6000 more troops for a 1200 mile border? Why bother? Does he think we’re all stupid?

Why not militarize the border? They’re shooting at the Border Patrol from Mexico and from our side too. If Mexico is our friend and ally, we are in real trouble.

Thank you for this great site, Michelle!

Margaret McC on May 15, 2006 at 11:52 PM

I am not quite as cynical as all this on illegal immigration. This should have been taken care of long ago, like twenty years ago. Now, President Bush is between a rock and a hard place and he’s facing the negative feedback of long standing bad law. I think he’s doing the best he can with what he’s been given, and I think Mexico needs to clean up its act so that its people won’t feel so desperate and hopeless.

RepJ on May 16, 2006 at 12:19 AM

And BTW, to those who want to vote against Republicans or are threatening to stay home, six deadly words…

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi

Would that make you happier?

We must SOUNDLY defeat the liberal Democrats before we can start voting 3rd party. Start voting Constitution Party at the local levels and then work it up to the state and federal level slowly.

RepJ on May 16, 2006 at 12:22 AM

Bush may have a blind spot on immigration, but it serves an end – his corporate cronies.

Look, I’m a conservative. I’m also a working man. I know that corporations are the backbone of our economy – but I also know that when they sell out on immigration, they sell out EVERYONE who works for a living – liberal or conservative. And President Bush, it is by now very clear, values corporations over people.

It pains, pains, pains me to say this – cause the liberals were saying it first, and it makes me throw up a little in my mouth to admit it – but after seeing the president’s performance tonight can there really be any doubt?

sponginghouse on May 16, 2006 at 12:47 AM

RepJ,

Who cares if we have a Republican Party that is only slightly further to the right than Nancy Pelosi?

I’m not saying I’ll sit out necessarily, but I’m definitely disgruntled and had better see something more at the end of the day than this ridiculous offering.

tommy1 on May 16, 2006 at 2:00 AM

RepJ,

I agree with you, though, that we need to vote in another party at the local levels rather than Republicans. Once they establish themselves locally we can vote them in nationally.

tommy1 on May 16, 2006 at 2:01 AM

Well, President Bush’s speech contained no surprises for me. It was pretty well delivered; The right tone… But the wrong words and the wrong ideas.

I kind of feel sorry for the man even though I believe he is 99.5% wrong on this particular issue.

It is obviously wearing on him even more than the other significant issues of his Presidency…. Perhaps because he knows he is wrong and he realizes he is not only’stabbing his base in the back’ but also a high percentage of the ‘loyal opposition’ on the Illegal Alien Invasion problem.

President Bush IS supporting amnesty, (just like we expected), but without the courage to call it amnesty. A small cash payment and go ‘to the back of the line for citizenship”….. But these people are expert at ‘taking cuts’ so I expect those that find some advantage to getting citizenship (Medicare, Social Security etc.) so we can expect to see them, in the near future, in the FRONT of the line, WITH 20 – 30 million of THEIR EXTENDED FAMILES, who are still currently in in their countries of origin.

The current plans to send the National Guard to the border are a double insult; They are an insult to the conservatives demanding action (but getting only a pretense of action). And they are an insult to the National Guard members and their families… President Bush is planning on deploying them to run errands and do maintainence tasks for Border Patrol EXECUTIVES and do construction work that is more in the venue of the Army Corps Of Engineers or private contractors….

(Speaking of that, I wonder if they are going to have to do environmental impact statements, archaeological surveys and all the other crud that are normally required by the government and the lawyers to build their little bits of actual, physical fence and the larger, pretend bits of ‘virtual, high tech fence’.)

{As a guy who spent his early career getting into places that he wasn’t supposed to go [in the service of Uncle Sam] and later got paid big bucks by government and private industry for PREVENTING other people from getting into places out in the middle of nowhere that they weren’t supposed to go; I can tell you with some authoritythat a ‘virtual fence’ is a ludicrous idea unless you have real people with real powers of enforcement within five minutes response time}.

I was kind of hoping that President Bush had ’seen the light’ because I still support him on 60% of his endeavors… But on this subject, he lived up to my expectations again… This time as an expected disappointment.

I was writing my response to the White House even before Bush finished speaking — for all the good it will do.

I sent the same response to my representatives (Durbin & Obama — yeh, that’ll help).

Agree! There’s nothing new here. 6,000 National Guard Troops, with no ammo! Oh, come now!! You really didn’t think they would be issued ammunition did you? Suppose someone got shot! No, way Jose! They’ll be sitting around drinking coffee, checking listening devices, watching drone surveillance videos, calling exactly who on radios that don’t communicate with the Border Patrol, and all the while trying to determine who has jurisdiction? THIS IS BALONEY!

The border has to be secured NOW. If militarizing the damn thing is the only way, then LOCK AND LOAD! As for the illegals already here, they aren’t going anywhere. But if you stop giving them the store, educating their kids, giving them free medical and dental, housing, etc, they might just GO THE HELL HOME!

If the IRS can ferret out MawMaw in Cut & Shoot, Texas for failing to show a $4 AT&T dividend on her tax return, they can most assuredly design and implement a plan to halt the invasion. The difference between the two examples is simply the will to accomplish the task.

Positioning the Guard on the border without the power of arrest or detention is simply placing a Bandaid on a sucking chest wound. Wasting more taxpayer money when it could be spent on highways to no where!
