Update: Our affiliate, Bryan of Sanctuary, sends along this snapshot of “quality time”:

We’re ten hours away, but such is the anticipation that we thought we’d open a thread now. It’ll be updated throughout the day. If you’re not in front of a TV at 8 p.m., you can watch live over the web at the White House site or at C-SPAN. We’ll have video afterwards, of course.
The president had better pull a rabbit out of the hat tonight because no one’s buying his line on this issue anymore. Michelle has a serious case of Bush depression syndrome this morning; symptoms include a new Vent and this link extravaganza. PoliPundit’s disgusted, John Hawkins is dismissing the troops-on-the-border ploy as a “gimmick,” and Hugh Hewitt, of all people, is talking schism. Captain Ed soothes the savage beasts by noting that our best chance for real reform lies in the idiocy of open-borders advocates, which, thankfully, is plentiful.
Geraghty, ever the realist, answers angry conservatives who are threatening to stay home with the law of unintended consequences: in a word, RINO-plasty. Personally, I wouldn’t mind that with respect to some domestic issues. But this sure ain’t one of them.
Finally, Gateway Pundit beats me to the punch on a Bush drinking game. He forgot a few, though.
“Guests”/”guest workers” — one shot.
“Comprehensive immigration reform” — chug.
“My friend, Vicente Fox” — two shots.
“Mi amigo, Vicente Fox” — three shots.
If he overenunciates a Latino name — four shots.
If at any point he starts speaking Spanish — finish the six-pack.
Play along at home. I figure I’ll be unconscious by around ten after eight, so if there are no evening posts tonight, don’t wonder why.
Update: Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, says this might be the GOP’s last chance. And here’s an old report from CIS explaining how amnesty — duh — encourages illegal immigration.
Update: Forgot one for the drinking game: if he says illegals will have to “go to the end of the line” — drink. Kaus explains why.
Update: The big M will be on O’Reilly tonight to deliver her verdict. We’ll have video of that too.
Update: The Times of London puts it bluntly, and accurately. They neglect to mention that it’s not working. Moran, meanwhile, chooses to light a candle rather than curse the darkness by offering advice to Bush.
Geraghty’s piece at TKS, which I linked above, is starting to draw reaction from righty bloggers. Hewitt agrees with Jim, as does MacRanger, who cites this post as an example of Republican “whining”. Ace started out on the opposite side, writing, “The Republicans are going to lose in November, and I can’t say I’ll be tearing my hair out about it,” but he’s coming around to Geraghty’s position, too.
It’s a genuine dilemma, and all the more so as it relates to immigration. The Republican House is our best friend here; they’re the only ones holding the line against Bush and the Senate. Sitting out the election would mean not only punishing an ally, but possibly removing the last institutional obstacle to amnesty. And as Geraghty points out, it’s a lot harder to re-install a Republican majority once the Democrats are the incumbents.
On the other hand, if you spin Jim’s reasoning out to its logical conclusion, we should all be out at the polls, year after year, happily rubber-stamping the GOP no matter how bad they get provided that they remain somewhere to the right of Nancy Pelosi. Here’s my question back to him: what if we all turn out in November, the GOP keeps both houses, and then proceeds to drift further leftward still, with the result in ‘08 being a forty-seat swing in the House instead of fifteen or sixteen? How does that sound? How about President Rodham-Clinton on top of it, to ride herd?
Bill Quick has more.
Update: Powerline cites a Heritage Foundation study of the Hagel-Martinez proposal that would in theory allow 100 million people to enter the country over the next twenty years. Hot Air affiliate Ian Schwartz has video of Karl Rove telling the faithful we’ll be “just fine” in November.
Update: Corner mini-roundup. K-Lo fears the worst. Derbyshire expects gassy platitudes. Krikorian says Bush missed his Sistah Souljah moment.
Update: The Truth Laid Bear is keeping a running tally of those live-blogging tonight’s speech. Already RSVP’d: LaShawn Barber, James Joyner, John Hawkins, and Jay Stephenson.
Update: Powerline has excerpts of the speech. Scott Johnson doesn’t sound happy. Neither does Michelle. I’m going to tally up the number of drinks I’ll be having just based on these snippets.
Update: Using Gateway Pundit’s drinking-game rules and my addendum, I count one swig of Dos Equis, one chug, two tequila shots, and one hit from the beer bong.
Update: You’ve got to be kidding. Teddy’s worried that the House bill might “criminalize” … illegal immigrants.
Update: “Comprehensive immigration reform.” Drink!
Update: Captain Ed has seen the full speech and has the high points and low points here.
Update: 6,000 National Guard members for one year until the Border Patrol can be increased. No law enforcement powers.
Update: Glenn has the full speech.
Update: A temporary worker program — which calls for them to eventually return home. Is he kidding?
Update: There’s a “rational middle ground” between an automatic path to citizenship and mass deportation who have deep roots here. We’re going to send illegals … to the back of the line. Arrrrrgghh — see the Kaus link up top.
He’s talking about the melting pot now. In fairness, he did admit earlier that catch and release is a joke.

The dems are in this hip deep too. They’ve been so quiet. They’re usually quite a bunch of whiny bastards. On a positive note. If gore had won instead of Bush, we’d be facing mecca or be dead and el hombre Vincente would be fighting off the islamic nutbags. Nah………they’d be facing mecca too.

Bush is incompetent, period. He has alienated moderates and now is working on the hard core. Would he had chosen Jack over Laura.

I’m voting in November, I won’t be sitting anything out, but I will NOT be voting democrat ever again in my life, so help me God. Never - I have a daughter in the military, and I’ll be d***** if I vote for a democrat. I’m an independent, but vote for a pig before I vote for a democrat ever again - at least a pig has some sense of values, and at least the pig won’t aid and comfort the enemy.
That being said - I will not be ignored in this debate. As a Texan, I have a real issue with the “open borders” policy, and I need some solid changes to be made. NOW. I want guard troops on the border. I want people who are illegally crossing the border to be stopped and arrested. I want people who are arrested and found to be in this country illegally to be sent back OR incarcerated by the U.S. if they have committed crimes against persons or property here.
I want people coming into this country to come here legally.
I would like to get some action here, and not just words. We have laws, and they should be enforced. I am planning to listen carefully, and I will be pleased if I hear good words, but I will not be satisfied until I see some action.

There are hidden issues that drive the President’s and Senate’s immigration position and it is more than likely, money. Yes, Bush has always been an open borders proponent, no question. However he swore to uphold and protect the Constitution of The United States and that does not lend itself to personal interpretations. Surrendering sovereignty to Mexico is not in the oath of office. Something is dreadfully wrong with our political system at this time. The disconnect between the politicians and the people is amazing! It truly is time for a third political party. As of now, the Republicans and Democrats are two sides of the same coin. Both are corrupt and not paying attention to the people that voted them in. Enough is enough!
JonR on May 15, 2006 at 3:19 PM
JonR,
Once again, you are spot on.
Let us face it. There are powerful corporate interests at work in this country who who would like to see all of North America as not only a free trade zone, but as a free market for labor as well. They don’t care if that ultimately drags the United States down to the level of a Third World country in the process. The rich can always hide behind gated communities, the working and middle classes won’t have that luxury.

You know you’ve pissed people off when every moderate, conservative, republican is calling for Bush’s head. I think it’s great. People are finally starting to see what’s going on and are getting MAD. What’s even better, is that no matter how bad things get I’ll never vote for a democrat either. They’ve burned too many bridges and are really showing their true colors. WRITE your senators, representative and the white house too.
darwin on May 15, 2006 at 3:34 PM
The American people could easily bring corporate America down on it’s knees. It all depends when and if Americans are willing to pull together and sacrifice. Would most people cut their checks short by staying home from work for a day or two? Stop driving for a day or two? Protest? Are they willing to accept some risk? Nothing’s free. It all depends on how much you’re willing to spend. It can be done…….does America have the will to do it?
darwin on May 15, 2006 at 3:40 PM
Well, I just hope us taxpayers get some representation some time soon. The House should be commended for passing HR 4437, they deserve support come election time. The senate, oooohhhh don’t get me started! They are out in la la land with just a few on the American citizen’s side.
We should write to the senators who support this guestvoter program and remind them: NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!
It’s REALLY not that hard GOP…
All we are saaayyyying… is give attrition a chance!
If the benefits of American citizenship are given to all, the only REAL “benefit” of being an American citizen is “getting” to pay the taxes to support all the illegals!! American citizenship will mean nothing.
Where will it end?!?
PS. I’m so thankful to have a place to VENT!

There’s been a lot of talk about continuing to vote for these yahoos or sitting it out next time and allowing Hillary an easy road. I feel like the RINO’s are forcing me to sit it out; how else do they get the message?
I’ve tried writing my Senators, the GOP, White House, etc. and received sh** in return. Crying George Voinovich hasn’t had the class to send so much as a form letter back.
When they refuse to listen, isn’t it time to go? The thought of THAT WOMAN in the White House sickens me, but perhaps some time on the bench will convince the next group of Republicans to grow some balls.

I for one will be watching. I voted for Bush, however I can not stand behind him in whatever he thinks he is doing. Bush is for a “one world.” So it makes sense he would not want boarders. But at what cost? I live in California and we are over- ran by Non-English speaking people everwhere!! I feel like the outcast because I do not speak Spanish and I fear it is only going to get worse. This has been going on for years they have slowly been talking over. Demanding things in their langage. I can’t go anywhere that I do not see a bill board in Spanish. We have allowed this. California is in fact already Mexico, sorry harsh but true.
SugarnSpice on May 15, 2006 at 3:57 PM
If I voted 10,000 times in the House election, I couldn’t affect the outcome. I will vote and cast a vote in the Senate election.
Sitting out has never accomplished anything. If nothing else go out and vote and write someone in.
rls on May 15, 2006 at 4:05 PM
As upset as everyone may be….we should never “sit out” an election as punishment. Say goodbye to tax cuts, get acquainted with socialism, and get ready to face mecca if a democrat ever gets in. Besides, they lie much better than republicans. They’ll tell you anything to get back in power then laugh at you as they go back on their promises.
darwin on May 15, 2006 at 4:09 PM
SugarnSpice, as a fellow Kalifornian I agree.
All of you other states pay attention to what’s happening here:
80+ hospitals have closed and/or filed for bankruptcy.
Our schools are some of the worst in the nation.
Sprawl, traffic congestion, pot-holed roads everywhere.
Our voting districts are so gerrymandered that only the liberals along the coast have any say in politics.
Many areas only have one option for health insurance.
Required uninsured motorist insurance (I wonder who those uninsured ones are?).
We are, what, about 3 billion $ in debt…I think equal to the amount of dough estimated sent to Mexico each year
And whole cities of illegals in the valley have their own laws, for instance, I know many who work in agriculture and during the protests there were illegals warning everyone in the little towns not to go to work. Some thought they would be shot, beat up, or have their house burned down, not to mention being outcast from shopping in the little towns.
This should not be happening in America.
Heed our warning, remaining 49 states.
NTWR on May 15, 2006 at 4:12 PM
Loretta Sanchez, Democrat from California, was elected by a margin of only a few hundred votes, votes it was later proven were cast by illegals. NOW do you understand why Democrats want these people here?
Why Bush does, I figure Presidente Fox has pictures of Bush with a goat or something…

I’ve never not voted due to apathy or frustration, but on the other hand, I’m sick and tired of being taken for granted. Conservatives, not some milquetoast moderates, put them there with expectations of changing some things.
Continuing to vote for them no matter what they do seems a little like an enabling parent who continually bails the kid out of trouble. Does the kid ever learn anything?
When it comes right down to it though, I’ll probably still go support the GOP, but they sure don’t deserve it. At least my kids haven’t gotten into any trouble.
right as rain man on May 15, 2006 at 4:33 PM
Hey, just tell any GOP fundraiser that you are going to give your money to those candidates who support a strong enforcement/ secure border reform, regardless of party affiliation.
Make sure to tell them that they can thank DeWine, Specter, and the other RINOs who are “hispandering” at the expense of our nation’s sovereignty for your lack of universal GOP financial support.
PS, we are making huge progress in mechanical harvesting of all kinds of crops. Eventually about 10 people will be needed, where 200 are needed now, to operate the harvesters, and eventually even those will be controlled by a combo of GPS, GIS and precision Ag..low skilled labor need not apply. So what do we do with all the illegals whose jobs will be “stolen” by American technological innovation?? WELFARE society, here we come. We do not need a serfdom. It is absolute hooey to say we need to import poverty to do jobs that are already being eliminated by tech.

I grew up in South Texas. The illegals drove wages down sooo much that Americans (legal of course) have a difficult time earning a living there. The poorest places in this country are along the mexican border. I wonder why?
gary on May 15, 2006 at 5:12 PM
Well…. according to reports… Bush is going to announce hes sending 5000 Guardsmen to the border, in a support role…
If they don’t have arresting power, they are worthless. This is a political stunt just to try shut up the debate that is now raging…
My solution… make it illegal to be in this country illegally… with an IMMEDIATE 60 day in jail sentence… put em in camps on the border. DON’T just send them back to Mexico. After 60 days, THEN send them back to Mexico.
Illegal immigration would dry up in a heartbeat.

I’m so angry over this. Sooo angry. I have left the Republican Party and am now a Constitution Party member.
stenwin77 on May 15, 2006 at 5:34 PM
It is tempting to ’stay at home’ and punish the party many of us have worked for, voted for, and given money to. HOWEVER, I do not think it is ever good for your party to lose an election, and it surely is not good for your party to lose control of the House. That would be a huge mistake. HOw would you like a democrat House (and Senate)with John McCain as president?
Labamigo on May 15, 2006 at 5:35 PM
If you are considering Switching or Setting the next election out, consider the future for a moment. You hope is to teach the GOP a lesson by taking the power out of their hands. Let the other guys really mess it up so the GOP can learn to listen to the Base.
Sounds good, except you forgot what the other guy is doing with the 2-4 years YOU gave them. How many years does the GOP (now with your support) have to work to just undue the dammage? At least 2-4 years and maybe much longer. Is this really what you want? Another 2-4 years just to get back to where we are now. I don’t think so.
Therefore no matter how frustrated you are some step forward is better than any step backward. Don’t sit out, don’t stop voting, don’t stop working for what you want. Let all your elected officials know how you feel. Not everything is perfect, but none of us can afford to stop working to make it better.

I saw some references to “New World Order” & “One World”.
above from quite a few commenters…Is there truth to this?
It bothers me, that with all of us, around 70% of the American population wanting Illegal Immigration stopped, why cant Bush do it?
A lot rides on tonight. He probably has three speaches picked out and will go with the side that makes the most noise….. or not.
shooter on May 15, 2006 at 5:52 PM
So, Bush will announce tonight that we cannot track down 11 million illegals, that we have no way of identifying them. Here’s a clue.
1. This last fiscal year, from business payroll returns, the IRS came up with over 9 million social security numbers that don’t match the names of employees. These W-2s have the name of the illegal alien, his or her workplace, and his or her home address. So when Bush says we could never find them, just think: LIAR LIAR LIAR
2. Want to find where they’re all working? Just offer a $500 reward to any “whistle-blower” who turns in his employer for hiring illegals. The massive amount of fines would easily pay off the reward, plus money left over for enforcement.
Just remember 2 things tonite when Bush says deportation isn’t possible:
1. LIAR LIAR LIAR
2. This is a country that has won 2 World Wars, can move mountains, tame raging rivers, and put men on the moon. America and it’s people can do anything we set our minds to. How dare this pathetic weasle of a president tell us the American people aren’t capable of throwing 11 million criminals out of our country.

Eroded the Constitution by not doing a thing about the recent Emminent Domain Supreme Court debacle…
Raised Federal Spending through the roof…
Created even more unfunded mandates for states…
Not done a thing about Earmarks and Pork Spending…
Has never vetoed a Bill…
Has NO national Energy plan…
Can’t get it so we can drill off California, Florida, or Anwar….
Created the Largest US beaurocracy ever (Homeland Defense…)

But that’s one thing. ONE. And El Presidente said he would sign an extention of that, if it got to his desk.
So exactly how are you seeing a Republican Administration as “progress”? I’ve tried to, really I have. But it’s just not there.
There’s the old quote about Bill Clinton whizzing on people’s heads and telling them it’s raining. Clinton has nothing on Bush in that regard. And I’m getting awfully tired of being wet all the time.
What I said before. Hillary would make it worse sooner. But only sooner. The end result from either Party looks the same to me at this point. And I refuse to sit back and hope and pray for better results from the Republicans any longer. I’m looking elsewhere.

“We are a nation of laws, and we must enforce our laws. We are also a nation of immigrants, and we must uphold that tradition, which has strengthened our country in so many ways. These are not contradictory goals. America can be a lawful society and a welcoming society at the same time. This President as well as the Congress has no intention of shutting down the border. They are all benefitting from it’s porous state and the charade that Bush is going to provide with the NG being sent is simply window dressing. The NG is NOT going to be apprehending or stopping illegals, which is what border security is about at it’s most basic, so the effort is all politics and a complete sham. It simply shows just how ignorant and gullible our Representatives believe we all are. We have basically 12+ million foreign nationals within our borders, thats bad enough, but it pales when compaired to the traitorous actions of or political representatives. They are the “real” problem in this issue. They have all abrogated their sworn oath to protect and defend the Constitution and the laws of this nation. Time to roll some heads ala French Revolution.

As Malkin pointed out recently, we are not a nation of immigrants. We haven’t been since the 1920’s. My grand-parents were among the last to come here legally, through Ellis Island from Sicily, in 1924. Soon after, mass legal immigration was halted by Congress.
The vast majority of Americans are 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation AMERICANS.
If we are a lawful society, as the Liar in Chief says we are, then he should do his job, enforce the law, and throw every d*** one of them out of the country. I have three cousins who have been waiting to come here from Italy for 5 years. They will probably never be allowed to come here. And too bad, all 3 are smokin hotties.

The Constitution Party is starting to look pretty damn good. I haven’t had a chance to read up on all the issues, but it looks like they are a conservative group (anti-abortion, pro-gun, anti-amnesty) trying to make up for the lack in the GOP. Check it out: http://www.constitutionparty.com/
At least this may offer us an opportunity. Instead of not voting, we can vote for someone who is firmly against amnesty/open borders in the coming Senate election. If the GOP loses Congress in ‘06, perhaps they will start paying attention to their voting base.
Don’t ask us to support the party, no matter what. Right now, voting is just about the only power we have. I’ve written to my Senators and Representative on these issues, and I’m still waiting for a reply. The next step is to deny a vote to those who are soft on immigration law enforcement. And really, my two Senators are Dems, so maybe some smart Republican will get in there and kick some ass!
In the meantime, I’m going to look long and hard at the Consitution Party. I’ve toyed around with the “It’s My Party Too,” but have not heard anything from them on their immigration platform. Until I do, I cannot give them my support. We’ll see….

I disagree. He’s not kicking Islamic butt. He’s allowing any terrorist with airfare to Mexico to walk right across our border and into our cities AND he fights any attempt to seal the border and stop them. That to me is giving aid to our enemes during wartime. TREASON.

If we do it quick, and put Cheney in charge, the troops would love it! And I have a sneaky suspicion Cheney would declare all out war on Mexico. Do you notice he says nothing in support of Bush’s immigration policy? I bet he’d put an end to this mess in about 30 days. Period.

Look, I agree with you. But I also agree with NTWR. We have young men and women in harms way and we need to try to handle this without the “I” word. AS I said, that will do nothing more than distract. We need some brass cajones……..where do we find them? Who’s got some in D.C.?

Bush to Outline 5-Point Immigration Plan
by Robert B. Bluey
Posted May 15, 2006
Rep. Jack Kingston (R.-Ga.), vice chairman of the House Republican Conference, tells me that President Bush will outline a five-point plan tonight on national TV that emphasizes border security and a temporary guest-worker program.
Kingston was one of several House Republicans invited to participate in a conference call this afternoon hosted by White House advisers Karl Rove and Fran Townsend.
Here are the five points Bush will emphasize, according to Kingston:
1. Border security: Under Bush’s watch, the number of Border Patrol agents has increased from 9,000 to 12,000 and more than 6 million illegal aliens have been sent home. In an effort to bolster security at the border, Bush will order the deployment of up to 6,000 National Guardsmen to play a support role. He will also ask for money to build a virtual border fence, which includes increasing the number cameras, roads and UAVs.
2. Temporary guest-worker program: The White House will embrace a plan similar to the Hagel-Martinez compromise legislation in the Senate.
3. Interior enforcement: Bush will endorse a bio-metric ID card, although it’s unclear if this will be required for all Americans to make it work.
4. Deportation: The White House will propose an end to the catch-and-release program. As a practical matter, Kingston was told there’s no way to deport the more than 11 million illegal immigrants already in the United States.
5. Assimilation: Bush will tell immigrants they must become part of society and learn to share American ideals. There was no commitment to any type of test to reinforce the idea.

I’m listening to the speech right now. I’ve never said it about him before and have most-times seen his side of things and agree with him but, tonight at least, so far: THE MAN IS AN IDIOT.
Goerge: catch ‘em, fingerprint/photo them, send ‘em home, AND LET THEM DO THE PAPERWORK TO GET HERE!
This ‘melting pot’-stuff is pure bullsh*t when they’re here illegally and expect their “rights”.
solitas on May 15, 2006 at 8:18 PM
It’s not an amnesty, according to Mr. Bush. OK, make the fine to be paid by the illegals fifty thousand dollars, to become citizens. That will solve most of it. The only one’s left will be the terrorists, as they have lots of funding.
cwcsquared on May 15, 2006 at 8:19 PM
I just watched the Speech. He is telling Congress that he wants a comprehensive bill by labor day.

George W Bush is a traitor to his own country. He has violated his solemn oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America.
Somebody in Congress needs to introduce articles for Impeachment!

Who is making fun of you? We are Americans concerned about the pourous borders. Name for me one country whose citizenry would not be concerned about having MILLIONS of illegal aliens within their borders?

No plan. Just, “I am asking congress”. How about “I demand congress”. No fence plan, keep them all here, same crap. Lookin to me like Hillary is a guaranteed in 08. Why does Bush try to appeal to a population of non-voters and illegal aliens. I guess he really is a middle of the roader, not a true conservative.

I don’t really hate anything about it, but I want to see results. But as a border stater (Texas) I have to say that I LOVE the idea of a barrier or fence. We need it. I want it. I’m happy about that, and I’m not going to be “fashionably angry” about the rest of the speech. Even if I get nothing else, I’ll be freekin’ happy about the wall/barrier/tech that stops the flow. Secure the border first, and we’ll work on the rest as soon as possible…
Becki Snow on May 15, 2006 at 8:36 PM
I say we start a “new” program and call it the UNIVITED GUEST WORKER program. The UNIVITED GUEST WORKERS get to leave the country and the INVITED GUEST WORKERS get to stay. Sounds simple to me. Imagine having a border skirmish with Mexico which would later become a full scale military action. We would have MILLIONS of Mexican nationals here in the states who would be on Mexico’s side. Mexico has NEVER been an ally of the US in a war. During the current war, Iraq (one), Kososvo, Vietnam, Korea, WWII, and WWI they were NOT with us. Obviously they were our enemy in the Mexican-American war. So now due to total negligence of our government we have 10 million plus people here who are NOT allies. What were we thinking?

This just in, “Hugh Hewitt still loves Big Brother”. Hugh is happy that the President proposed a fence. It’s interesting to note that he now accepts as “a fence” the very thing he referred to earlier as “a virtual fence” which would be completely unacceptable, i.e. a fence you would have to walk a long way to get around or maybe take a bus. When The Party calls, we can always count on Hugh Hewitt to answer.

Same sh*t, different day.
He lost me when he called them ‘Illegal Immigrants’. They are **NOT*** immigrants. When he said the majority of them are ‘law abiding’ he totally lost me. (What part of ‘being here in VIOLATION OF FEDERAL LAW’ is law abiding??). These are CRIMINALS!
Now he want to let them ‘cut in line’ ahead of those who are waiting (sometimes for years) for an immigration visa to even get here.
Mr. President - These (who are patiently, and legally waiting) are the ones who are law-abiding. These are the ones who made this counry great. These are the ones who will respect our country and our laws. These are the ones you want to flavor the melting pot - not the horsesh*t you are dumping in with your amnesty. And These are the ones you are pis*ing on (again!) with your *AMNESTY*.

Latinleo is a liar. He was NEVER a Republican voter, but merely a Democrat poseur. If in fact he came from Cuba on a raft he should recognize that he came to this country legally, as our policy has been to accept people escaping the tyranny of Fidel’s Cuba so as to enjoy the freedoms of Democracy. Latinleo is probably not from Cuba. He’s just another Reconquista from Mexico who doesn’t give a rat’s ass about Democracy or the United States.
As for the President’s speech……ugh. Platitudes and very poor deception. If you wanted to do something bold, Mr. President, you could have not gone down the road of ‘employers don’t know who they are hiring due to conterfeit paperwork’. Offer a $1000 reward for turning in any of their employees that are illegal for 30 days followed by a $10,000 penalty for any of them in their employ after that would be a good start. Small carrot. Big stick.
But no. We get to hear how the illegals are hard working blah, blah, blah…. Disappointing. He still doesn’t get it.

When they pull down the wrought iron and put up a “virtual fence” around the White House, I’ll consider considering one on the border less than a criminal act.

Here’s the question, and it’s a big one:
Will anyone be reporting the locations of the Guard on the border to the Mexican government???
Oh, yeah, and just how do you apply for one of these ID cards, with the bogus documentation that is so readily available?

Pistolero must be a mind reader, perhaps Karl Rove should be replaced with your inciteful mind. To answer your rascist comment … I am proud to be a Latino, a Cuban-American and a new Indpenedent who will not vote Republican anymore…I am just following the trends most Cubans are following, that is, we are becoming less Republicans and more Democrat. (thank God Latinos never vote Democrat and hopefully never will anymore). Search for articles and polls regarding this. While we appreciate the fact that we are allowed to become citizens, we do not appreciate the rasicism that stinks from your party against my Latino brothers and sisters. Pistolero, you are the non truthful speaker here.

Luckily I changed channels to listen to Lou Dobbs. The FOX crowd seemed darned happy about Bush’s speech and I couldn’t take it anymore. To FOX, the illegals are victims of a fence that trips them when they try to cross the border.
Two points:
Bush never mentioned any sanctions or enforcement of current law against employers
Bush never explained what the fine would be for an illegal to buy citizenship.
Dana Rohrbacher is on now. He is terribly disappointed.
Bush delivered as expected, Fluff with an insult on top. There are still some good Republicans, Tancredo, Rohrbacher, but the party is sunk.
Tonight the country club Republicans are dusting off the golf clubs to celebrate the leap in the commodities market in non-American replacement workers

“Tonight, I will make it clear where I stand”
“the vast majority of _illegal_ immigrants are _decent_ people”
_illegal_ = _decent_ ???
“Illegal immigration puts pressure on public schools and hospitals … strains state and local budgets … and brings crime to our communities” = _decent_ ?
“we must enforce our laws” vs “others have organized to stop illegal immigrants from coming in.”
“We are also a Nation of immigrants” are we a Nation of illegal immigrants?
“to secure our border, we must create a temporary worker program” anybody sees logic here?
“This is amnesty, and I oppose it” or “rational middle ground” and “People who meet these conditions should be able to apply for citizenship” ?
“It is neither wise nor realistic to round up millions of people, many with deep roots in the United States” - I see millions of killers with “deep roots in the United States” in our future! It’s unrealistic to round them up.
“there are differences between an illegal immigrant who crossed the border recently - and someone who has worked here for many years,” - somebody who killed recently and 2 years ago..
“it is a way for those who have _broken the law_ to pay their debt to society, and demonstrate the _character_” !
“many of you listening tonight have a parent or a grandparent who came here from another country”
“people willing to risk everything for the dream of freedom” - bank robbers fall in to the same category?
“Tonight, I will make it clear where I stand” - so where is it, Mr President?

You know, right now there’s a guy in Arizona who’s been on the run for a couple of years after butchering his family. Suppose they catch up with him in a few years and find out that he’s got a new family, goes to church, and runs a home for the elderly. Should the government say “Hey, you’re a nice guy now — welcome to society!”?
Perhaps all of the naturalized citizens should demand their money back after all they went through to LEGALLY become Americans! Why is it that NO ONE higher up will understand that amnesty through attrition, by enforcing laws already on the books that make it illegal to hire illegals, and fine the crap out of employers who do it (or jail them if that’s what it takes) will fix most of the problem? No jobs — no reason to come up here, and no reason to stay here. And why does Bush INSIST on tying border security to amnesty? Why can’t we stop the flood, make sure it works, and THEN worry about the illegals who snuck in here?
I’ll be down on the border with the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps doing the fence on the 27th. My advice to people — join up and join in!
Capt.Herp on May 15, 2006 at 9:25 PM
The new labor union. With a fine to pay, english to learn and back taxes to pay, most illegal immigrants that are here now, will probably continue to ignore laws and continue on as usual. Employers will continue to hire illegals and people will continue to hire them to landscape their yards. Congress has shown that they can do easy tasks like banning smoking and making sure you use your seat belt, but when it comes to immigration enforcement or saving Social Security, they aren’t up to the job.
The recent street marches by illegals and their supporters shows a powerful new labor union in the country. And they know it. There is power in numbers and the numbers continue to grow. Add a little white guilt in the recipe and many white Americans have gone to their side. Didn’t a polititian or two get busted a couple of years ago for having an illegal housekeeper?
ChromaKey on May 15, 2006 at 9:29 PM
With this speech, the Republicans have lost the midterm and 2008 elections.
70+ percent of Americans want the border closed…period.
Closing the border has to be done first before any plan is implemented to legitimize long-term illegals in this country. The current administration is totally blind to what the country wants, and they’re going to pay for it…as they should.

This would have been an acceptable speech - before Simpson-Mazzoli. While there a few “crumbs”, like the ID and the UAVs and other technical countermeasures, I’m afraid that this isn’t enough.
After the Senate waters down whatever penalties are proposed, the result will still be - amnesty. We were fooled once in 1986. Their fault. Will we be fooled again? Our fault.

I knew I was right when I voted for Buchanan in the primary in 1992 (i think it was then), when his platform was a fence along the entire border. They all thought he was nuts, now he would hands down win. We all need to wake up and keep politicians like Bush out of the process. I will always be a conservative, and not a republican.
