There’s always been speculation that more people were involved than just the four who did it, starting with the fact that more bombs were found in their car after the attack and extending to a purported domestic mastermind whom they may or may not have rendezvoused with during a whitewater rafting trip and who may or may not have left the country shortly before the bombings. If someone else set the timers they may have been told that they were going to get on the trains, leave the bombs, and meet up later. The story I heard about the 'bus bomber' screaming and trying to get his backpack open just before it exploded would tie in to that. Plus it's always easier to get someone to volunteer for a mission when they don't know it's a one-way trip.
