[...] Update: All right, the best thing to do here is to point you back to this post I wrote in May after the British government published its findings in two inquiries into the bombings. There’s always been speculation that more people were involved than just the four who did it, starting with the fact that more bombs were found in their car after the attack and extending to a purported domestic mastermind whom they may or may not have rendezvoused with during a whitewater rafting trip and who may or may not have left the country shortly before the bombings. They also were known to hang around a gym in Beeston known locally as, I kid you not, “the al-Qaeda gym.” [...]

[...] Which brings us to the vid, courtesy of our pal kasper kasper. Quote: “The only terrorists that people think are here are the American and British governments for what they’re doing in Iraq.” Microcosm or outlier? And why, do you suppose, do the police raids that didn’t pan out seem to leap so quickly to his lips and not, say, this or this or this? [...]

[...] Which prompts the question of who the sympathizer was. I did a round-up back in May when the British government released its report on 7/7. From the Times of London: In June 2005, Khan and Tanweer went on a whitewater rafting trip in North Wales. Witnesses report that there was a burly man in the party who spoke only Urdu and appeared to hold sway. Khan took orders from him. The authorities have not traced this man. [...]

One possible explanation for the bombs and such left in the cars would be that they didn't know that they were on suicide missions. If someone else set the timers they may have been told that they were going to get on the trains, leave the bombs, and meet up later.

The story I heard about the 'bus bomber' screaming and trying to get his backpack open just before it exploded would tie in to that.

Plus it's always easier to get someone to volunteer for a mission when they don't know it's a one-way trip.
