"Not-fully fair system for SCOTUS appointments" is right. If another candidate for appointment was fully as qualified and sharp as Roberts is, but he had a speeding ticket in 1973, that speeding ticket is going to be flaunted by Democrats as evidence that he is an unsafe driver, a danger to others in his community, not to be trusted to adjudicate without predjudice if a speeding ticket case comes up before the court because he himself played fast and loose with the law blah blah blah.
I have an idea which may bring parity to the proceedings:Only Senators who have themselves been found guilty of a crime, any crime, may ask questions of a nominee.
That would shut them up-not one of them would want their lily-white reputations to be smeared by such a revelation.
But of course court nominees are held to a slightly higher standard.

This is a shame, IMO. Here's a guy with the intellect and integrity to become a stellar SCOTUS justice. In the end, though, the chance will never be his, because he's a white man and we can't nominate three straight white men.
