Because Taking Moonbat Politics Out Of Gradeschool Beauty Pageants

Is freedom of speech dead? Then why can’t a 10-year-old sing four-letter words and a diatribe about President Bush at her beauty pageant? Hm?

The principal at a Coral Springs Elementary school has banned a 10 year old student from performing an anti-war song critical of President Bush as part of her school talent show. Park Springs Elementary principal Camille Pontillo says the song is inappropriate and too political, and a district spokesperson says it’s her call.

10 year old Molly Shoul wanted to perform “Dear Mr. President,” co-written by pop star Pink. The song criticizes Bush for the war in Iraq and policies including his stance on gay rights.

Nancy Shoul says the ban violates her daughter’s right to free speech, but a Broward County School District official said the principal has the right to determine what music her students can hear at a school function.

“This is a fifth-grade student that wants to perform a song filled with lyrics about drug use, war, abortion, gay rights and profanity,” district spokeswoman Nadine Drew said.

Here’s a solution to satisfy both sides: Have the girl compete in California, where singing her Pink song might only not be banned. It might be mandatory.

After a sometimes emotional debate centering on discrimination and sexual orientation, a Senate committee approved a bill Wednesday that would require that the contributions of gays and lesbians be included in textbooks.

Supporters argued that all students should be made aware of the role that gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people have made, but state curriculum has no such requirement.

Opponents countered that discussion of sexual orientation should occur at home and not be mandated in schools.

Imagine that! Talking about moral issues at home, and sticking to the three r’s at school. What are those parents thinking?

They’re probably thinking about homeschooling their kids.

Speaking of homeschooling the 19th Carnival of Homeschoolers is up.

Coral Springs. That’s not far from my neck of the woods. Coral Springs is an upper end neighborhood populated mainly by Yuppies. Mostly liberals there so this story doesn’t surprise me.

I’m not convinced that this pop song would be troubling to kids in the audience, as they claim. It’s not really in-your-face offensive and don’t think there’s a strong case for preventing her from singing it. (Sorry, “hell” is hardly a four-letter work for 10 year olds even.) I read the lyrics and quit honestly was expecting something much worse, like the Eminem song.

Frankly, she needs to work on her act. She seemed to be mumbling.
