Video: Bush impersonator Steve Bridges on “Meet the Press”

Russert did twelve full minutes this morning with Dubya’s correspondents-dinner doppelganger. The entire show is (or should soon be) available at MTP’s homepage; Bridges appears at around 40:30.

Fair use requires that I only clip a tiny bit, but this should whet your appetite:

There’s a long profile of Bridges here.

And here’s further proof from the Chicago Sun-Times that the Great Colbert Media Blackout of ‘06 continues apace, as TV critic Doug Elfman derides the mainstream media’s right-wing biases and does his own part for truth-to-power by defiantly reprinting portions of the transcript of Colbert’s performance. If Bridges doesn’t make you laugh, this ought to:

The media’s implosion of silence could be one of the final reasons many liberals use to not turn on TV news. It’s not like they feel a vested interest in the industry anyway, since it has been bought and parceled by conservatives.

There is Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News, that Pravda of GOP propaganda and breeding ground for Bush appointees. There are the networks’ Sunday news shows that give more face time to Republicans. There are cable news channels like MSNBC, where Republicans have programmed the shows and hired on-air Republicans and conservatives-lite, from Tucker Carlson to Joe Scarborough and Chris Matthews. [And Olbermann. Don't forget Olbermann. - ed.] Some TV watchdogs even chronicle these conservative media daily, backed up by transcripts and video clips from TV news shows, in the expansive Web site, MediaMatters.com.

Read Ace on why the media loves it when liberals call them Bush apologists. Content warning, but it’s all richly deserved.

This is hilarious, but also really scary that there’s such a difference in the basic, seemingly non-ideological aspects of reality like what constitutes a unique or creative joke:

“Colbert’s routine was more remarkable for its ***unique and creative brazenness***. He joked that Bush’s presidency is like the Hindenburg; that Bush’s wiretappers were monitoring this very event, and that the White House press corps gave Bush a free pass.”

The Hindenberg is unique and creative? Particularly as it was in response to the ubiquitous Titanic metaphor? And the wiretapping joke? That’s brazen?

“…they helped Bush mix politics with corruption from the ashes of 9/11 (”aircraft carriers and rubble”), and failed to see through Bush’s politicization of the drowning of an American city after a hurricane (”recently flooded city squares”).”

Thanks for the careful annotation. And, really, **Bush’s** politicization of Katrina?!

It’s impossible to think that every liberal complaint about a right-wing media is a lie; surely a lot of it is dishonest, but to some extent there’s really just this enormous gulf in how the sides see reality.

I finally watch Colbert’s entire 24 minute routine at the White House Press dinner and was thoroughly unimpressed. I actually felt bad for him for the mediocre to poor reception almost all of his jokes received.

His show’s alright, but he was terrible at the press dinner.

Watched Meet the Press. Steve Bridges made more sense than the laughable Pelosi.

Several questions by Russert made he have that deer in the headlights look. Oops, that is how she always looks.

Pelosi was great!! I had to watch Meet The Depressed just because I couldn’t believe her advisors would turn her loose, alone, with Russert. Did anyone notice the look on her face when Russert brought up Harry Reid and Abramoff? I’ll bet whoever was responsible for booking her on the show is fired this morning!

Bridges was funny, too.
