Long ago must jurisdictions replaced DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) with DUI (Driving Under the Influence). As such, it means under the influence of any substance which impairs your ability to operate a motor vehicle.

That includes Kennedy Special Canadian Imported Reserve, Ol’e Chappaquiddick, NyQuil or, for that matter, aspirin if it has an adverse effect on your ability to drive!

So, regardless of what he took, if it impaired his ability to operate a vehicle, and he’s admitted as much, then he should be charged.

Don’t believe me? Try as a defense yourself and see what the police tell you!

Indeed driving under the influence of drugs (prescription or not) is a violation of the law as surely as drunken driving is. This lame attempt at mitigating his crime is laughable at best. The average Joe would’ve spend the night in the tank, at the very least.

Even if I give Patches the benefit of the doubt and believe him when he says he wasn’t drinking, isn’t driving under the influence of even prescription medication considered driving impaired?
I have taken medication that had warning labels advising me not to drive while taking these meds.

It’s a shame that the sargents sent the officers away and took over, driving the Congressman home instead of booking him-but the reality is that they probably feared the Democrat/Kennedy/MSMedia, and took steps to avoid the sewage storm that could be leveled at them for doing their jobs. Yes, it was wrong, and they should be ashamed, disciplined and possibly restricted in terms of advancement. But the Kennedys could make life even worse for them, and once the media had gone over their lives with those affable fine tooth combs, held by reporters looking to scoop their way to success-it was probably an easy decision to make. But they decided wrong. No matter how it would affect their lives, they should have upheld the Law.
