Can we muster no sympathy for Teddy’s spawn? Think of the genetic legacy this poor schmuck has to cope with. Car-crashes and cover-ups are practically part of his DNA.
What happened to compassionate conservatism? I ask you.
MM is having a teensy bit of fun with the story, which of course is wrong, particularly in light of the restraint shown by liberal bloggers when Dick Cheney shot that guy in the face. A Congressman from a family of accident-prone drinkers crashing his car and then telling the cops he was on his way to a vote — at three in the morning — is no laughing matter.
The question at this hour: did Rove engineer this “accident” in order to keep the media distracted from Stephen Colbert? Stay tuned to Daily Kos for continuing coverage of The Silencing ‘06. Or, better yet, read Hot Air affiliate Brian Maloney instead. The whining has begun.
Update: I should add, for the record, that I think the theory that Kennedy was trying to invoke a constitutional shield when he told the cops he was late for a vote is preposterous. That would have been awfully quick-witted for a guy who was supposedly under the influence. He was probably just trying to throw some weight around, i.e., I’m an important guy with important business. That sort of thing.
Update: THE SILENCING ENDETH HERE.
Update: CBS News ponders the unthinkable.
Update: Smoking Gun has the police report. Red, watery eyes, slurred speech — typical effects of prescription sleeping medication, no?
Update: The Freepers say Teddy cancelled a visit to a school today due to “extensive media interest.” You know who else probably won’t be visiting the school? Stephen Colbert. Because the principal can’t handle the truth.

What do you really expect from a family whose fortune is premised on illegal booze?

Yes, important business. Like “where’s the toilet?”

At least President Bush’s daughters faced the judge when they were caught for underage drinking. The Kennedy’s get a pass.

Next you’re going to wound my faith in humanity even more by questioning the chastity of Paris Hilton …

C’mon, give the kid a break. I, myself, woke up disoriented at 0230 Tuesday morning and went to my local polling place to cast my vote. Lo and behold, it was closed. However, the policeman I ran into threatened to arrest me for trespassing, plus, I had to walk home.

Let me take a guess at the lib’s defense - Rush Limbaugh had drug-induced problems with the law and he was able to keep his job.

It’s just to bad that there wasn’t a police barracade for Teddy to crash into. Maybe Mary Jo Kopechne would have survived that crash…

Yo, Allah! Have you checked the interactions between Ambien, Phenergan and alcohol?
Nice job, Congressman.

It’s a shame that the sargents sent the officers away and took over, driving the Congressman home instead of booking him-but the reality is that they probably feared the Democrat/Kennedy/MSMedia, and took steps to avoid the sewage storm that could be leveled at them for doing their jobs. Yes, it was wrong, and they should be ashamed, disciplined and possibly restricted in terms of advancement. But the Kennedys could make life even worse for them, and once the media had gone over their lives with those affable fine tooth combs, held by reporters looking to scoop their way to success-it was probably an easy decision to make. But they decided wrong. No matter how it would affect their lives, they should have upheld the Law.

Even if I give Patches the benefit of the doubt and believe him when he says he wasn’t drinking, isn’t driving under the influence of even prescription medication considered driving impaired?
I have taken medication that had warning labels advising me not to drive while taking these meds.

The man was drunk! I wish everyone would stop enabling this bad behaviour on the part of another Kennedy. As far as I am concerned his constituents voted he and his father into office. THEY DERSERVE BOTH OF THEM!!!

Indeed driving under the influence of drugs (prescription or not) is a violation of the law as surely as drunken driving is. This lame attempt at mitigating his crime is laughable at best. The average Joe would’ve spend the night in the tank, at the very least.

Long ago must jurisdictions replaced DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) with DUI (Driving Under the Influence). As such, it means under the influence of any substance which impairs your ability to operate a motor vehicle.
That includes Kennedy Special Canadian Imported Reserve, Ol’e Chappaquiddick, NyQuil or, for that matter, aspirin if it has an adverse effect on your ability to drive!
So, regardless of what he took, if it impaired his ability to operate a vehicle, and he’s admitted as much, then he should be charged.
Don’t believe me? Try as a defense yourself and see what the police tell you!

Now Patches can’t remember driving that night. How can he remember he didn’t ask for special treatment? Maybe he can’t remember drinking either.

Alcohol, pain killers, Ambien, and being a Kennedy. What a great combination.
