[...] Meanwhile, Saddam’s too old to die. Prepare yourself for the blast of sanctimony that’s coming if he wriggles out of the noose: it’ll be just like the bright-side idiocy about having denied Moussaoui martyrdom when he got life in prison, except more so because of what it’ll prove about the rule of law in Iraq and how much more civilized they are than we are when you come right down to it and etc etc etc. [...]

[...] Why do I mention him? Because ever since the Moussaoui fiasco, it’s been bugging the shinola out of me that some people still think imprisoning these turds renders them useless to the enemy as propaganda in a way that killing them wouldn’t. As Wikipedia notes, Rahman’s imprisonment “has become a rallying point for Islamic militants around the world, including Al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden.” And if you won’t take Wiki’s word for it, watch the very beginning of this edit of the most recent As-Sahab release. That’s Wail al-Shehri, one of the “muscle” hijackers on Flight 11. Notice whom he prays for. [...]

[...] I got it wrong initially, but corrected myself (twice, for good measure) so I only eat half a log on this one. Here’s what I wrote in the Moussaoui post that got all the trackbacks, citing the fact that nine jurors found he had a violent father and a dysfunctional family growing up: Those are the only two mitigating factors which a majority of jurors — not all, mind you, but a majority — agreed the defense had proved. The highest number for any other factor was five. The questionnaire didn’t ask them to weight the factors so we can’t know for sure how important each one was relative to the others, but in all probability the reason this guy will live instead of die is because … he had a rough childhood.
Not enough: Moussaoui gets only life imprisonment...

A verdict was reached, and it appears that that was what resulted in Zacarias Moussaoui only getting life imprisonment, when the death sentence is what's required in a case like this. More coverage here from Hot Air and Michelle Malkin....

[...] This morning Al-Qaeda terrorist Zacarias Moussaoui was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole. This brings to an end a trial that featured the rantings and ravings of Moussaoui hen he denounced America and attacked the 9/11 victims. There are many around the blogosphere who did not support the verdict yesterday, denouncing it as a sign of weakness. [...]

Mitigating, shmitigating. This is yet another example of white guilt as described recently (again) by Shelby Steele:

"White guilt makes our Third World enemies into colored victims, people whose problems--even the tyrannies they live under--were created by the historical disruptions and injustices of the white West. We must "understand" and pity our enemy even as we fight him."

Just imagine if we put all those Gitmo guys into the criminal justice system.

Beyond the fact that a death sentence would, indeed, elevate this scumbag to martyrdom, thus giving him continued reach and "power" beyond the grave, there's another point: it's a far too easy way out.

Let him rot in jail like a caged animal, as such is far great punishment of mind and body, all the while knowing his future will not include a dozen virgins. Rather, if he's real lucky, he'll fight to stay one himself.
