May Day Field Reports

I thought it would be good to create a separate blog entry for blogger/viewer/reader field reports. We’ve got affiliates and stringers covering NYC, Washington DC, and Chicago who will report back later in the afternoon and evening. If you’ve got tips, photos, stories, send ‘em our way. We’ll update this throughout the day.

Smash sends his account from San Diego and Tijuana.

Reader Seth reports a small turnout in Atlanta.

Reader Doug e-mails: “I work across the street from LAX, with a grandstand view of the airport. I’m not sure about anywhere else, but I am seeing lots of planes taking off and landing. The traffic on the freeway during my commute, including on the ramps to the airport, were normal.”

Fausta in Princeton NJ blogs her eyewitness report from beautiful Princeton, NJ.

Update 3:31 p.m.: Robbie Cooper of UrbanGrounds heads down to City Hall in Austin, TX and discovers … a day without protesters.

Update 4:39 p.m.: Jennifer at Demure Thoughts blogs from San Antonio, Texas, where Hispanics outnumber non-Hispanics by 3 to 1, and says there’s nothing to see here.

Update 5:45 p.m.: Debbie Schlussel is in Detroit, where the news is reporting “thousands” of illegal aliens protesting. Says Debbie, it’s considerably less than that.

Update 9:15 p.m.: Justing Fleming points us to this Protest Warrior thread with photos from the Chicago protest. Here’s the last in the series; note the white sign.

trashcan.jpg

Update Tueday a.m.: Two last reports to add to the mix. Phil C. has photos from Santa Ana, California, and New Counterculture is on the scene in Herndon, Virginia, with yet another report of low turnout.

Thanks to everyone who contributed!

Business as usual for a Monday here in North Jersey, but I’m pretty far out in suburbia. Did some shopping today.

Saw what appeared to be run-of-the-mill Caucasian youth doing landscaping that I was told they do not want to do.

I’d have stopped and asked them about this act of heresy, only they were kicking up a ton of dust and I like staying clean.

JammieWearingFool on May 1, 2006 at 3:16 PM

Things seem to be just fine here in central Virginia, but I’m a little isolated. If I go into town later today, I’ll give an update. But, I’m certainly not “suffering” because illgal immigrants have stopped working, and I haven’t heard from any of my family or friends who are, either. Some boycott. :)

S_que on May 1, 2006 at 3:46 PM

As a family business co-owner in the midewest, I’m glad to say that our manufacturing facility is 100% up and running – mexican employees and all. I saw a couple Mexican restaurants were going to close in the big city, but other than that – no action.

2wylde on May 1, 2006 at 3:47 PM

I happen to work in an office where almost all here are liberals. The receptionist (who happened to attend the last protest, and prepared posters, etc. for it) did show up for work, but in a white t-shirt and jeans to show solidarity. She is also refusing to buy anything (lunch, etc.) Her immediate supervisor is also a left-winger who looked at me funny when I actually had the nerve to go and buy myself food for lunch. They asked me if I was going to attend the rallies this afternoon (in Dallas), to which I clearly responded I had other things to do (like go and spend my money, and do my part for the economy).

Rick on May 1, 2006 at 3:48 PM

Down in Toms River, NJ, I spoted a mobile immigration protest, with 4 mexicans (I assume they were) driving in an SUV flying the mexican flag out the window on one side of the vehicle with the american flag (flown upside down) out the other side the car. Thats all I spotted…so much for the ‘great’ protest on immagration that was planned for today..

Terlizzi999 on May 1, 2006 at 3:49 PM

It doesn’t really matter WHAT happens, if anything, in the rest of America. The news media will BE wherever these ILLEGAL people DO turn up, and they will make a spectacle out of it, attempting to shame us all into capitulation.

NRA4Freedom on May 1, 2006 at 4:17 PM

Providence, RI: Maybe 200 people show up for morning rally, mostly students and union leaders. The usual idiots who show up for anything anti-American. There is a rally just beginning now and will report the activity later as I get facts.

Wade on May 1, 2006 at 4:29 PM

KTTV11 (Fox) Los Angeles has reported that mail service in downtown Los Angeles has been suspended. Mailboxes have been taped shut with signs saying that there would be no pick-ups. Postal carriers are also unable to make their appointed rounds within the protest area.

Apparently no other post offices are being affected.

The Ugly American on May 1, 2006 at 5:03 PM

Just an aside…..our mobile car wash service showed up at work today as per usual.

I tipped them an extra $10 telling the owner…“Thank you for not boycotting us gringo’s today”

He smiled and said “No problem…we appreciate appreciate your business”.

The Ugly American on May 1, 2006 at 5:12 PM

I noticed fewer pick-up trucks spewing blue smoke with a bunch of latinos in the back throwing out trash, cigarette butts and empty bottles/cans/cups.

doingwhatican on May 1, 2006 at 5:35 PM

The demonstrations are essentially all within the confines of the large socialist welfare enclaves we refer to as “cities”. I would suspect that all of the communist, socialist and other leftist organizations within 100 miles came to participate in this fiasco. They can flap their Mexican flags and scream at the top of their lungs but it will change nothing . . . illegal foreign nationals don’t belong in this country and future trespassers must be stopped at the borders.

rplat on May 1, 2006 at 5:39 PM

I live in a little bitty burg in downstate Illinois. Just got back from running some errands. Only thing different I noticed is that there’s an American flag flying from nearly every utility pole in town and a whole lotta front porches to boot.

bdfaith on May 1, 2006 at 6:13 PM

In Denver we had a strong turnout for the protests with 75,000 people attending the rally.

All the businesses I attended were open with hispanic employee’s in attendance. I saw several businesses with Spanish signage (no English) that were closed. I saw one car drive by with a Mexican flag hanging from the passenger side windows. I don’t think the kids in the car realized it was hanging upside down.

The only affect this boycott had on me was less traffic on the road. It saved me several minutes on my morning and afternoon drive. I hope we have more boycotts.

Dave on May 1, 2006 at 6:16 PM

Here on the East end of the Columbia River Gorge it is business as usual.

Scribe35 on May 1, 2006 at 6:17 PM

I can see some people gathered in front of City Hall in Dallas from my office. At this time, it does not seem like a very large gathering.

Rick on May 1, 2006 at 6:29 PM

“I would suspect that all of the communist, socialist and other leftist organizations within 100 miles came to participate in this fiasco.”

Rplat, you’re right. I’d add that they helped organize and finance this fiesta.

doingwhatican on May 1, 2006 at 6:47 PM

In a bizarre headline the NBC affiliate in Denver reports on their website that “Citizens rally over immigration in Northern Colorado”.

The only person quoted in the article was a rally organizer who said: “We are against laws that make us criminals”.

I wasn’t aware that there were proposed immigration laws that would make criminals of our citizens.

Link to article can be found on this page: http://9news.com/local/

I drove down the Main Street in my little rural northern Nevada town and saw a bunch of young people walking along the sidewalk. Then I remembered it was noon, and they were high school kids on their way to the local burrito palace (which was open) for lunch. The pizza place had a good lunch crowd too.

Raoul on May 1, 2006 at 7:39 PM

Well, I work in downtown Socialist Chicago, right on Jackson. They streamed by for hours (literally!). Lots of Mexican flags, lots of chants (in Spanish), and lots of signs demanding full amnesty.

Boy, did I get ticked off.

zeluna on May 1, 2006 at 7:43 PM

It’s interesting to see these reports of little or no activity outside the major cities. It doesn’t matter though as the Enemy Press has already declared a victory for the Stalinist backed protestors. Witness this AP story from Yahoo News:

I went to City Hall area in Philadelphia and saw a very few small groups of mexicans marching with a mexican flag. I would “join” them by walking in front of them with my US Navy T-shirt that had a US Flag on the back with a fanged snake guarding it and the words “Don’t Tread on Me”.

I did buy lunch in Reading Terminal, some coffee and donuts at Dunken Doughnuts, and some shirts at Modell’s.

I missed the real protest which was at Independance Hall area, so I can’t report on it. Anybody else see it??

I don’t think it had any affect on business or traffic or anything. Only thing it did was make them look bad and piss off more Americans.

Hopefully people will email their politicians and tell them to secure the borders and take a hard line against Illegal Immigrants or else.

Richard Davis on May 1, 2006 at 8:12 PM

I did notice a few mexicans carrying USA flags, but the flags were not unfurled. The flags remained wrapped tightly around the flag poles…

Anyone else see this anywhere or know what that was all about??

I thought maybe it was a form of protest, like, “we’ll carry your flag, but we won’t fly it today..” or something like that.

I only ask because I saw 3 different mexicans in different locations carrying the flag that way.

Richard Davis on May 1, 2006 at 8:18 PM

Here in Queens, NY things were basically the same. The exception is Jackson Heights with a large latino community featuring Mexicans. There was a fairly large turnout in that area of Queens. Other than that, stores were open with about the same shopping crowd from what I can tell.

Notice on the news (FNC for me) that many people sported Che Guevarra action gear, Che posters and flags.

WHAT IN FLAMING, BLOODY, HELL DOES CHE GUEVARRA HAVE TO DO WITH AMERICAN IMMIGRATION LAWS, AMERICAN BORDER SECURITY, AND AMERICAN SOVERGNITY??????? WHAT DOES CHE GUEVARRA HAVE TO DO WITH AMERICA AT ALL?????

Just wondering…..

Life is pretty normal here in Denver other than The CEO of the company I work for manning the switchboard due to boycott MIA’s….actually I think she enjoyed the break from her otherwise stressful duties.

On my way home I stopped at a local convenience store owned by a Somali, then at the cleaners owned by a Korean, and then at the liquor store owned by an Ethiopian … sure doesn’t look to me that the US has a problem with either the practice or it’s attitudes with LEGAL immigration ….

These protests would have been an opportune time to check some ID’s and start putting a dent in those 12 million illegals we keep hearing about. Then build a damn wall.

From Dave:

Dave – welcome to the Liberal’s version of Newspeak. Muddy the words and you muddy the debate. Muddy the debate and you can divide and conquer – the game plan of the Left.

Have you earned your hyphen yet?

WC on May 1, 2006 at 8:37 PM

To Paul in Denver:

“sure doesn’t look to me that the US has a problem with either the practice or it’s attitudes with LEGAL immigration.”

That is just the point. Only the hardcore libs/Dems, illegal aliens, and Che Guevarra action gear models have a problem with the practice and attitudes of LEGAL immigration.

The False Dervish on May 1, 2006 at 9:00 PM

Oh it was so much like heaven today, you could actually go out and shop in peace, eat in peace, drive in peace and safety! Can we get them to do this everyday? Man that would be great soon the employers that support the illegals would either have to straighten up or wash out, either way it would be a win, win scenario.

The idiots even managed to clog the official border crossings making virtually impossible for them to trade with our nation … big thumbs up they have some great leadership … NOT!

And for their next trick! …

AZPatriot on May 1, 2006 at 9:20 PM

Not even noticed here in Suburban Sacramento…a huge protest downtown, but life proceeded normally elsewhere aside from many absences in our school. I keep looking around the Internet to see if anyone managed to shut down, oh, New York, LA, San Francisco–anyplace at all, really, but aren’t finding it. Must be missing something, because wasn’t that their stated goal? Shut down the country?

Bob's Kid on May 1, 2006 at 9:28 PM

Listening to the nightly news is just one big laugh. they are reporting that the demonstrations are huge and have definitely made a financial impact. They showed one small business locally in Manhattan and they are touting that as IMPACT? The reporter (Ernie Anastos, I think is the name)gave updates on key places around the country and appeared to attempt to show what huge crowds showed up and how peaceful and blah, blah, blah.. I am so sick of this phony baloney BS. The main stream media are irresponsible hacks. The sad part, as I see it, is these people are being used by sleazy politicians just to gain the vote and remain in power. This is sad. Very sad!!! Wake up America..before it is too late!

Sandys Beach on May 1, 2006 at 10:26 PM

I’m reporting from Las Vegas, and it was a big bust here. One report I read said that there were “several hundred” in the Big March. The Culinary Union is hosting something downtown (after 6 pm) and then some UNLV students are going to do some march on the Strip after that. Another report says there wasn’t significant absenteeism at schools either.Several hundred is the best they can manage in this city? YAWN!

Enas Yorl on May 1, 2006 at 10:37 PM

Here is my report on today’s situation locally

Just for background: I live in a small resort town 140 miles from the border… Until the last few years, despite our proximity to the border, we didn’t have a big hispanic population locally(other than old Spanish families that have been here for 200 years, who are ‘more American than most ‘white’ Americans’).

Population has about doubled in the last few years. And about 3/4 the new people are Mexicans; I won’t say that any particular percentage of them are illegal, but in public places like stores, restraunts and etc. you are just as likely to hear Spanish being spoken as English around here these days, and a lot of them seem to be unable to speak any English at all, or at least very limited English.

Looking around today I only saw three restraunts closed. One of the local Italian food places and the other two were Mexican food places that are both owned by a (nice) ‘Green Carded’ LEGAL Mexican alien family; But they employ mostly non-english speaking and very likely illegal aliens.

Post Office was just about deserted mid-afternoon and late afternoon when I went by…. Usually about 10 people in the lobby at mid-afternoon, 15-20 people late afternoon.

Stopped by a convenience store for a soda; Business there is normal. There was a young, non-English speaking hispanic man in front of me in the checkout line purchasing eight money orders… So it looks like ‘remittances’ are continuing apace today.

The ‘tourist traps’ along the mid-town main road were pretty quiet, but that may just as likely be because it is Monday and we are ‘between seasons’ here… But it seemed to me to be a little quieter there than I would have expected.

The bars seem to have about 1/2 the normal vehicles in their parking lots this early evening. Restraunts are very busy though.

Spent a lot of time in Walmart. It was pretty crowded; about 90% of the normal number of shoppers; Under normal circumstances, at any given time about 80% of the customers in the store are obviously Mexican. Today though, only about 10% of them for the three hours I was there were obviously hispanic.

A lot of people were pulling /pushing two full carts, so I wasn’t the only one doing the ’shop til you drop’ thing… So, I don’t think that our local Walmart will notice much of a reduction of income today despite a 70% reduction of one particular group of customers. There is a Subway sandwich shop inside Walmart here… It was packed, about double or triple the number of people there as is usual for the time of day I was there.

Had to go to Checker Auto Parts twice this afternoon. Seemed to be fewer people in there than normal, but the cashier said that business today is about normal in terms of money coming in, even though fewer people.

The grocery store was about as busy as normal, but noticably fewer ‘Hispanic faces and voices’ than is common there. Cashier said that she didn’t notice any less money going into the register than usual.

Lot of new local street and sidewalk repair / construction projects begun today. I noticed quite a few ‘obviously Hispanic’ people working on those projects as I drove around town.

Didn’t see ANY Mexican flags today; Usually see several (bumper stickers and the like) on any given day. No protesters, picketers or immigration related signs etc. were to be seen.

Normally, I see at least five (and often many times that) Mexican license plates on vehicles on any given day. Didn’t see any today.

I did get a compliment on the embroidered US Flag patch on my shirt pocket from a cashier at the drug store; That was about the only nationalistic, cultural or ‘patriotic’ thing I saw or heard locally today.

LegendHasIt on May 1, 2006 at 10:40 PM

Upon driving home from work on the 101 freeway…all I can say is I wish every day was May 1st.

Boy…they’ve sure convinced me.

The Ugly American on May 1, 2006 at 11:05 PM

Armed with a video camera and a still camera and 2 friends for support I went looking for the Rally that was publicized for Boston Common at 12 noon. What I found was 4 disappointed souls standing over a pile of signs and a bullhorn.

I had mixed emotions. I told my wife I might be arrested as I would refuse to leave even if the police told me it was for my protection. No police were needed and no bail was needed and the pictures are pretty dull. I did find a Chilean fast food joint that was closed. Pretty exciting stuff I know!

LonelyMassRepublican on May 1, 2006 at 11:26 PM

I went by the march here in Portland, OR. As usual they love to march and whine here in Portland. There were probably 10,000 people. I didn’t see where the march started but I know it snaked through downtown and ended up at a rally at Portland State University. I saw no businesses closed, indeed all businesses were doing brisk business today. Supposedly for a group that was going to boycott all business today, these creatures sure did a lot of business at McDonalds and at convenience stores along their route.

marianpaul on May 1, 2006 at 11:43 PM

Well, May Day has come and gone here in the Hoosier Heartland (Indianapolis for the uninitiated). Can’t say I noticed anything different, though one of the employees in my department called in, claiming an infection that had not bothered her all weekend…and oh yeah, she’s latino. But, the other latino that works for me showed up. My wife works in an area with many more mexicans and she said she didn’t notice anything different.

I did see the pictures on Fox of the crowd in Chicago, which was all they seemed to be able to show all afternoon before I went to work. I heard on the news driving home that there were sizeable demonstrations in LA and Miami, and that the one in Miami had the Cuban immigrants pretty honked off.

On the whole, though, it doesnt seem like they managed to shut down our economy, does it? Although, I haven’t tuned in the drive-by media today, so I may just be missing the start of the Great Depression 2.

Jezla on May 2, 2006 at 12:51 AM

Wichita had a small”improptu” rally between 5 and 7 PM. It was a bust. Absolutly no impact in Wichita,Kansas. I heard of a large turnout in Garden City , though.I posted on it here:

Nothing of note in Lakeland, Florida. We have a large Hispanic population, but I saw no slow-downs of work anywhere. “Yawn”!!

An interesting sidenote; Tampa officials estimated the rally in Tampa between 6000 and 7000 people. However, the Tampa schools are reporting about 8000 students missed class.

wirebitersmith on May 2, 2006 at 9:13 AM

A few kids out of school, but not enough to make a difference. I didn’t see a Mexican flag all day, and I saw no desecrations of Old Glory. I didn’t hear anyone trying to sing any Spanish version of the Banner.

As for the “big protests” going on elsewhere, I often wonder why our ICE agents weren’t on the scene checking people’s legal status and arresting those in the US illegally. After all, if a fisherman wants a big catch, he goes where the schools are.

After work I walked by the gathering at Union Square in NYC yesterday around 5:30 pm. There were people there, a little more then the usual crowd (actually better hygene this time to), but I have seen more people at the Halloween parade.

First three things I noticed when stepping out of the subway, 1. big yellow signs saying “Amnesty Now”
2. Che posters with workers rights
3. the flag of Mexico

Aaron on May 2, 2006 at 9:54 AM

not much happened here in my south texas town. there were a few thousand protesters marching on the bayfront, but they didn’t march until 5:30 in the afternoon – after work. i guess they didn’t want to lose their jobs. i went to the grocery store, no problem there. went to buy some shoes. no problem there. saw some yards being mowed. no problem there. i think a couple of mexican restaurants closed for the day. i guess i won’t be eating there anymore. (such a drag since they are the best ones in town…)
xoxo

pullingmyhairout on May 2, 2006 at 11:06 AM

Business as usual in Shreveport, where we have a fair-sized Hispanic populace. All Mexican restaurants and other hispanic-owned businesses open, no protests, no employee walkouts. Imagine that.

CigarGuyM on May 2, 2006 at 12:12 PM

Seattle was a Moonbat festival. There was a huge turnout; the memo about using American and not Mexican flags had been read. Deranged leftists tried hijacking the event and a good time was had by all.
I blogged about it here:
