Iran to UN: get bent

posted at 11:17 pm on April 27, 2006 by Allahpundit

They had thirty days to stop enriching uranium. What’d they do? Announced that they’re going to speed up enriching uranium. Now the deadline’s here, and despite some eleventh-hour disclosure to soften ElBaradei up, it sounds like he’s going to come down pretty hard on Iran in his report.

The consequences of which will be … nothing, of course. Emphasis mine:

Russia and China … haven’t budged on their opposition to imposing Security Council sanctions on Iran, and the U.S. isn’t even going to try to get a sanctions resolution now. Instead, the U.S. and its key allies will push for another Security Council resolution, reiterating the demand for Iran to cease enrichment activities under Chapter 7 of the U.N.’s charter — which would deem the issue a threat to global security, making non-compliance punishable by sanctions or even military action. Even that may be further than Russia and China are prepared to go. Indeed, U.S. officials have been tamping down expectations of Security Council action, talking instead about assembling a “coalition of the willing” outside of U.N. channels to pressure Iran through financial and other measures.

The “willing,” this time, may not be many.

Bush tried to lean on Hu Jintao when he was in Washington last week, reportedly to no avail. There is some “good news,” though — Republicans and Democrats have at last reached a consensus on something. Remember it the next time you hear someone on Hardball say that Iran’s absolutely, definitely, no-doubt-about-it a decade or more away from having nuclear weapons.

The most intriguing cloak-and-dagger analysis I’ve read is Debka’s, although Debka being Debka, you never know how seriously to take it. For example, here’s what they say is one of the U.S.’s main objectives in negotiating with Iran behind the scenes:

To lay the groundwork for an alternative Middle East nuclear bloc hinging on Saudi Arabia and Egypt, i.e. a rival Arab nuclear program. Iran was meant to be brought up short by the discovery that if it goes all the way to an N- bomb, so too will its Arab opposite numbers. This race carries the extreme potential of pitting Sunni and Shiite nuclear powers on a collision course.

Emphasis mine. Iran will get the bomb, and we’ll respond … by giving the bomb to the Saudis. What could go wrong?

Let’s file that one away as “unlikely.” More likely is this bit, also from Debka:

Tehran is confident that its influence in Iraqi politics outweighs Washington’s by virtue of its ties with Iraqi parties and Shiite militias and its intelligence network. The Iranians are therefore letting the US-backed Jawad al-Maliki take over as prime minister because they believe they hold the key to the crucial defense and interior appointments. They expect pro-Tehran SCIRI leader Abdel Aziz al-Hakim to land these jobs for Badr Organization commanders, preferably Abdel Mahdi, all of whose top echelon are under Tehran’s thumb.

On that note, the World Tribune reported Tuesday that Iraq is building 45 forts to try to seal its border with Iran. Which is super, but would have been more super, say, two and a half years ago. Sealing the border won’t do much about the nuclear problem anyway, which allegedly now threatens London and Paris as much as Tel Aviv. In fact, here’s Khamenei boasting just the other day about how far Iran’s reach extends. Click the image for video.

khamenei.jpg

Both Debka, in the analysis linked above, and Time magazine assert that it’s Khamenei who’s calling the shots on nuclear weapons, and that this nut — seen palling around with Sudanese butcher Omar al-Bashir — is there mainly to play bad cop to the mullahs’ good cop. Or worse cop to their bad cop. Whatever; it’s hard to keep score sometimes in this particular game of “Who’s Crazier?” Regardless, Israel has a new eye in the sky to keep track of it all.

As for the people of Iran, life is as mellow, hopeful, and tolerant as it’s ever been. Michael Rubin might tell you otherwise, but he’s with AEI — “neocon, Zionist conspiracy central,” as he describes it — so make sure you discount his opinion accordingly.

And cue Alan Dershowitz.

Add what we know now and the early reports of Iran receiving a shipment of BM-25′s (SS-N-6′s)courtesy of North Korea. And it’s begining to look like the 4th of July will be celebrated rather early in Tehran …special fireworks donated by the U.S.

President Bush Please give them a dose of shock and awe. The UN is totaly useless, France has already surendered. Ressolution after ressolution was ignored by Iraq, it will be no differant now. Most of the countrys in the world are jealous of us and would like to see the USA nocked down a notch. Bill Clintons former Sectary of Sate Madelene Albright once said that “we (the USA) should not be the only super power in the world” she most assuridly is not on our side. The libs have divided this country and the Mulahs or what ever they are watch the MSN and hope to hang on untill the Dems take over. Jimmy Carter Secratary of State what fun….

And the big surprise to ANYONE with this is????

This old ‘I Double Dog Dare You’ nonsense is so juvenile and silly it would funny if it weren’t the prelude to Armageddon.

I expect the UN and the EU to be as stupid as normal, and I expected Russia, China and North Korea to take their obstructionist, stalling tactics in the international community and to provide weapons and technology to the enemies of civilization….

But I didn’t expect President Bush, Tony Blair and Israel to be so wishy-washy about it. You would have thought they learned a lsesson from their past embarassments at the hands of Islamic World Dominators that want to destroy anything decent in the world….. But NOOOO… They insist on repeating their past mistakes.

The only difference between this and the LOOONNNGGG runup with Iraq is that Iran doesn’t give a *dang* about hiding their Weapons of Mass Destruction… They will just bury them deeper in known locations within their own territory and continue to ‘boil their witches brew’.

The United States “invented” and deployed the first nuclear
bomb in the low-tech 1940′s in FOUR years. Why do some
think it will take Iran TEN years in the hi-tech twenty-first century to do the same ????????

gary on April 28, 2006 at 7:20 AM

Not sure what everyone’s so worried about; Mahmoud Ahmida… Ahmeda…Ackmidaj….Iran’s President seems like such a reasonable sort. Here’s hoping Israel (the only country with the balls to do it) takes care of him and a few mullahs.

right as rain man on April 28, 2006 at 7:22 AM

The Iran Nuclear Bomb store is OPEN and there’s a line of terrorists from around the world, with money in hand to buy or bribe the materials or technology.

Make no mistake, this threat is REAL.

It’s us or them.

We must, and we will, attack them.

Richard Davis on April 28, 2006 at 7:56 AM

Thanks to the Left in this country and around the world, our leaders are now gunshy to take real action against a certain threat for fear of losing in the court of public opinion. If our press had not constantly hammered W since his election we could have had this problem solved by now. I hope the Left is happy when Israel or London get nuked, because they will be the reason it happened.

But of course the Left will then accuse W of not taking action sooner to prevent it, by not connecting the dots.

geekrunner on April 28, 2006 at 8:10 AM

Right As Rain Man is correct.

Israel is the only country that will be able to attack Iran. If the US does it, bad things will hapen politically. While I hate the UN as much as anyone else here, UN nations do have a lot of power. If they side with Iran, which they certainly will, then we are only going to be further alienating ourselves.

Even if the attack comes in the form of a joint US/Israeli covert airstrike but the US claims to have no knowledge of it, then we would at least be protecting ourselves politically.

If the world blames Israel, its not like that country will see an increase in terrorist attacks or anything, since everyone is already doing everything they can to destroy them anyway.

Eric12470210 on April 28, 2006 at 8:12 AM

The key difference between the Manhattan project and the “Tehran Project” is size.
Yes it does matter.
It took a large bomber (B-29) to carry the bomb(s) the smaller of which weighed about 9000 pounds.
Deployment is the trick which the mad Mullahs don’t have down.
To shrink the nuke down to rocket-deliverable size requires extremely sophisticated technology which will take the butt-monkeys of Iran a while to assimilate.

On the other hand, George W is on his way out (being chased by an angry group of grassroots Republicans carrying torches and pitchforks) and looking back on history he doesn’t really much care what other people think.
And, being the Anti-Clinton, he will not leave loose ends like this for his successor.

So expect to see action (with extreme prejudice) before the 08 election.

Crispy Fried Mullah anyone?

Answerman on April 28, 2006 at 8:56 AM

Ok, at the risk of my “slightly to the right of Michelle’s soup spoon” credentials, how about the US of A sit this one out, and let the almighty UN and Old Europe deal with this? It’s designed to fail. And in that failure becomes the most severe leverage against the appeasers and crybaby bedwetters of the sacred UN.

Have the US put the pressure NOT on Iran, but on the UN.

Am I crazy? The prime strategy in poker, war, and business is randomization of behavior.

Wander on April 28, 2006 at 9:14 AM

Thanks to the leftist U.S. press, the obstructionist Democrats, our loud mouthed, egocentric ex-generals, a cowardly, cringing Europe, and a totally corrupt U.N., Iran has become emboldened and learned that we are too busy trying to destroy ourselves to seriously challenge them. To say that we have become a “paper tiger” would be a gross understatement. Our only hope is that president Bush exercises the boldness and courage we know he is capable of.

…Israel is the only country that will be able to attack Iran. If the US does it, bad things will hapen politically.

Israels ability to attack the Iranian targets (those that are known) is somewhat limited in the respect that unlike their attack on Iraq’s nuke plan in the 80′s, the distance this time is a factor as are the number of targets. Plus Iran learned from Iraq’s mistakes and has spread key facilities around and in underground complex’s. The size of the needed airstrikes will be quite large with regards to the Israeli air force…but still within the their capability…

As to bad things happening politically….the situation with Iran is a dammed if you do and a dammed if you dont one…either we allow them the ability to develope nukes that can as of now reach Israel and Southern Europe (Shihab 3 & 4 respectively) and in that also allow them to supply terrorists groups with nukes as well OR The U.S. launch an airstrike unprecidented in history to possibly delay and/or end their nuke program. If we do and in we I mean the U.S. because for all the rhetoric of the EU3, no european nation will step up to the plate to assist in this endeavor, publicly, we will be condemed…but privately say a prayer as it were that those arrogant yanks did it.

Geek is right on the money. If we destroy their nukes the libs will say we’re eeeeeevil! lf we don’t, and they nuke us or an ally, the same libs will ask “How did Bush let this happen? Why didn’t he do anything stop it?”

Libs think we can negotiate with these wackos. They have zero understanding of the region or the maniacs in charge over there.

lsn’t it ironic that the lefty libs wanna kiss the terrorists’ butts, yet the libs will be the first to get their heads cut off.

Tony737 on April 28, 2006 at 11:50 AM

Wander makes sense, but the U.N. is worthless and spineless and Old Europe simply doesn’t have the political will to take on a problem like Iran. Only the good old U.S.of A. (if pushed far enough and with the support of Europe) or Israel will move.

Personally I’d like to see Israel do what it has to do. They’re brutally efficient when necessary and cannot allow Iran to succeed with a nuclear threat.

Unfortunately, most of the usual suspects around the world will condemn them while privately saying “whew, glad that’s taken care of.” Sad.

right as rain man on April 28, 2006 at 12:07 PM

Iran will get the bomb, and we’ll respond … by giving the bomb to the Saudis. What could go wrong?

How about everything! I think Wander’s on the right track.

high_desert_wanderer on April 28, 2006 at 12:50 PM

Okay so far today we have learned that Iran has missiles capable of reaching Europe and they also have enriched uranium. How far along that enrichment process is still a matter of debate. It may or may not take awhile before they can produce a weaponized grade of nuclear material. As others have noted there is still the matter of getting it to fit the missiles they have. I don’t scoff at the speed at which they may be able to accomplish this in light of what India and Pakistan accomplished and there are plenty of Muslim nuclear scientists running around. Iran also has Al Baradei acting as both a propaganda spokesman for them and running interference at the UN. Right now I think Ahma Dinnerjacket is still more bluster then substance. I hope America has some independent human intelligence resources on the ground, preferably ones that didn’t get their job under Clinton.
In other words I am not ready to panic yet, I don’t believe the UN will do anything and in fact Ahma nutjob as already told them to piss off. Is a military strike the only option left? No, beleive it or not economic embargos can have some effect. Iran has no oil refineries. They can pump all of the crude they want but without a refining process it will just sit there. Their economy is almost entirely dependent on the sale of their oil. Does the rest of the world have the backbone to suffer through the pain of not allowing Iranian oil on the market? Probably not
So I close by saying there are more questions then answers, but I want the US to provide the answers not the Iranians.

As I watch the saga unfold with Iran thumbing its nose at the world, I can’t help but wish our leaders had the audacity and tenacity of Iran’s president. Of course I’m horribly concerned about his position, but I wish our elected decision makers had the guts to say, “We don’t care what the rest of the world thinks.”
How dependent are we on the oil from Iran?

Leiren on April 28, 2006 at 1:46 PM

I had the opportunity to see Flight 93 today. One of the things that I couldn’t help thinking was this: Imagine that these hijackers were in charge of the Nation of Iran, and then imagine they are armed with nuclear weapons. Watch the film folks, and then you’ll better understand the gravity of what is facing us. God help us all.

Khyber Pass on April 28, 2006 at 3:46 PM

A great deal of hope is being put on diplomacy in dealing with Iran. This is a (nuclear)waste of time. The President if Iran believes in Mahdaviat-the preparing for the coming of the Mahdi who will be the 12th Imam before the end of the world. His speeches tell us what is on his mind and what he wants done. This cannot be ignored.

The world became frightened when 9/11 murders took place. The world became MORE frightened (AND angry) when Pres Bush acted. I think that if we have to take action, we can expect to probably go it alone with the exception of being aided by Israel and perhaps Australia.

We clearly have a choice(and Michelle, please pardon my crudeness)…prepare for what has to be done in the event that diplomacy does not work and have the balls to see it through AND to win…or grab our balls and run for cover.

Pardon my crudenss.

The False Dervish on April 28, 2006 at 6:24 PM

I am impressed by the knowledge of my fellow posters. You guys are well informed on the topics of the day.

Ask your lib friends about the caliphate or the 12th imam and you’ll get a blank stare, yet they know all about how we should negotiate with lran. (Peace in our time!)

Now, ask the same libs what P. Daddy Diggidy Dawgg wore to the Oscar’s and they’ll tell you in great detail all the way down to the bling bling in P. Dawggy’s teeth.

Libs are obsessed with pop culture, so you can use that to explain politics to them, for example, when discussing the War on Terror I use a line from The Terminator (1984): “Listen! and understand! Those Terrorists are out there! They can’t be bargained with, they can’t be reasoned with, they don’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And they absolutely will not stop, EVER! Until you are dead!”

Tony737 on April 28, 2006 at 8:04 PM

I have just returned from seeing UNITED 93. After the film, I spoke briefly to a guy who looked as if bullets could bounce off of his chest. His eyes were moist with tears and his face was red. He told me that his aunt was one of the 9/11 murder victims in the World Trade Center.

And we still have Americans who claim that we deserve 9/11, that Pres Bush caused 9/11 as an excuse to invade Iraq, that United 93 is some sort of Bush hoax, etc.

EVERYONE! GO SEE UNITED 93 IMMEDIATELY. IF NO ONE WANTS TO GO WITH YOU, OR YOU HAVE NO ONE TO GO WITH, THEN DO WHAT I DID AND SEE THE MOVIE ALONE.

AND, AS MICHELLE SAYS: “NEVER, NEVER, NEVER FORGET.”

Until tomorrow, good night everyone.

Ending transmission.

Iran, the sand dune nation, is blowing off the UN and the Security Council. Threatening to retaliate if the White House even thinks of military intervention. President Imajihadist does this at their own peril.

doingwhatican on April 28, 2006 at 11:25 PM

“It’s to soon” the libs whine. “We can’t show the films of the World Trade Towers people will get upset”; damm right they will get upset, should be upset. WAKE UP AMERICA. Since the Civil War the only war the libs have won is Vietnam, they will not win this one.

birdman on April 29, 2006 at 1:00 AM

Birdman and doinwhatican are quite correct in their posts.

Doinwhatican: Provided that the Pres will stand strong against the Dems and RINOs, we can demonstrate to Iran the trouble they will be in. But, we must not fool ourselves to think that it will be as simple as a walk in the park (remember the possibility of sleeper cells in our country). Having said that, we must remember that in dealing with the Middle East, power, strenght, and the unflinching attitude to do what must be done and face the consequences head on is a key to victory. Look at how Israel presses on…with the exception of the Arab Legion, no other Arab Army has been able to fight Israel to a stand still and possibly defeat them.

Birdman: That is what the libs are afraid of-that America wakes up!!! That we do not forget!!! If we forget, we become complacent. If we become complacement, then we will begin to sing Kumbiya. The libs hope that by adopting this attitude, and by wearing burkas, that the terrorists will not feel threatened and leave us alone. WE GET ATTACKED, AND THE LIBS WORRY ABOUT WHAT THE TERRORISTS AND GOD KNOWS WHO ELSE WILL THINK OF US! I DON’T CARE WHAT THE REST OF THE WORLD THINKS OF US AS WE DEFEND OURSELVES. I DO NOT CARE WHAT THE ARAB-NO-PARKING-ZONE (MY VERSION OF THE ARAB STREET) SAYS.

The libs have already won some victories:

1) Pres Bush caving into to Senator McClain by agreeing to confer Constitutional rights to the terrorists.
2) Catering to the terrorists at Club Gitmo in every way possible.

Anyone care to add to the list?

The False Dervish on April 29, 2006 at 8:41 AM

We must also remember that the terrorists know how to work the media, so to speak.

They study all the news broadcasts to see what America is thinking.

They take note of what our senators and congressmen say, see who is most likely to be weak on defense and incorporate the anti-Bush feelings that our senators and congressmen express in their very own speeches to convince us that we are a failing nation.
