I’ve been blogging over at mm.com about the upcoming Spanglish-ization of the Star-Spangled Banner by a group of activist Latino musicians. They’re rewriting the national anthem in a show of solidarity for illegal aliens and pushing for Bush White House-endorsed amnesty.
Well, the anthem is now out. Listen here.
Full audio here.
The Chicago Tribune has the lyrics. Sit down:
Nuestro Himno
Published April 26, 2006
Verse 1
Chant:
It’s time to make a difference the kids, men and the women/Let’s stand for our beliefs, let’s stand for our vision/What about the children los ninos como P-Star
These kids have no parents, cause all of these mean laws.
See this can’t happen, not only about the Latins.
Asians, blacks and whites and all they do is adding
more and more, let’s not start a war
with all these hard workers,
they can’t help where they were born.
Verse 2
I’m sure we’ll see it printed on the Spanish version of the White House website any day now.
Sí?

Meanwhile, the Minutemen are said to be gaining from such open-borders zealotry. The question is whether those gains are enough to stop the White House and the Chamber of Commerce and La Raza and Teddy Kennedy from getting their way.

This simply infuriates me! It is that “entitled” attitude which strikes so many of us as arrogant and overreaching. Hopefully this despicable act also will galvanize American citizen as the Mexican flag waving did. One further point, one of the main “stars” associated with this reworking is Gloria Trevi. A little Wikipedia search on her reveals this:”Trevi became more reclusive after that. For years, all that was heard about her were rumors and speculation. But then, in 1995, Sergio Andrade’s former wife published a book about how Andrade allegedly would pick up teenaged girls and lure them into a web of sex and slavery by promising to make them superstars. According to the book, named De La Gloria Al Infierno (From Glory to Hell), Trevi was also a willing participant of Andrade’s scams, and she had fallen in love with her manager, supposedly participating in his manager’s sexual orgies and slavery acts with the teenaged girls just to please him.” This is one VERY screwed up person. Read the whole entry and be disgusted!

I don’t understand what everyone’s so worried about. This is exactly what happened with the Irish and the Italians. My immigrant great-grandmother still sings the Celtic and Italian versions of the Star-Spangled Banner that immigrants sang in the streets during the Ellis Island period. And everything worked out fine without any action on the part of the host country. Relax.
Alex K on April 26, 2006 at 5:36 PM
I dont think the Irish and the Scots-Irish were talking about “Reconquista” with nifty little slogans like ” LA, MEXICO” and talking about the “Republica de la Norte” which (they hope and dream!) will encompass Arizona, California, New Mexico and most of southern California! They arent talking about ASSIMILATION into America they are talking about A COMPLETELY SEPARATE NATION! A LATINO NATION which is separate from the USA! That is their stated goal..and “relaxing” about it is precisely how we GOT in this predicament!
labwrs on April 26, 2006 at 5:46 PM
To these people, this isn’t the United States of America…. it’s SUBURBAN Mexico !!! There is but one reason they have come here, money. This proves they have no more respect for us and our culture and have no plans of intergrating into our society. I find this music and lyrics as an abomination of OUR anthem.
ChipThome on April 26, 2006 at 5:51 PM
Alex K the differences are many. First of all your great and grandparents learned to speak English. They assimilated. They came to this country legally. They became citizens as soon as they could. They paid taxes and obeyed the laws, for the most part, unless they were part of the Irish mafia. They didn’t wave an Irish or Celtic or Gaelic flag and bitch about their inherent right to be in this country. I’m sure others can add to this list of differences.

Better yet, feathers, let’s make the punishment fit the crime.
Let’s organize a protest trip to Mexico City and go straight to whatever passes for the Mexican “White House”, take their flag down, and run it up the pole upside-down below the US flag, just like those they supported did.
If they don’t like it, I’ll gladly support sending a few tomahawks their way to let them know who’s boss.

“These kids have no parents, cause all of these mean laws.”
Cry me a river. You knew there was a law when you broke it. If you have to pay the consequences (deportation) of said law, I’d say you more or less brought the rest upon yourself. I agree it’s sad for the children, but that’s no less true for people who break our immigration laws and are deported than for people who break our criminal laws and go to jail. The fact that you have a family relying on you to be there and provide for them is supposed to deter you from breaking the law.
This may be a dumb question, but is there any reason the children couldn’t go back with them?
Legal Quandary on April 26, 2006 at 6:06 PM
The obvious answer to your rhetorical question, LQ: The anchor baby provision. Once that golden insta-citizen baby is born on U.S. soil, the illegal parents have their key. This should be the key to any legislation addressing illegal immigration. I hesitate to call it reform, because if it comes out of the District of Crack, you can be certain nothing is getting reformed.

JJ, labwrs—Sorry about this, I thought it would be clearer that I was being facetious. My great-grandmother was not simultaneously unassimilated Irish and unassimilated Italian, though that would have been super cool. And I doubt there was ever a Celtic or Italian version of the anthem sung in the streets. Denying that Spanish is now far more entrenched in the U.S. than any immigrant language has ever been is such a popular strategy from immigration enthusiasts that I just couldn’t help myself.
I did have a serious point though, which I shall offer as amends:
You’re right, JJ, that there are many more differences between the current immigration wave and the famous Ellis Island one. In fact the two most important differences are pretty simple but almost never addressed.
They are:
1) the last wave was ethnically and linguistically divided, whereas this one is mostly Hispanic and within that mostly mononational.
2) The last wave stopped.
Alex K on April 26, 2006 at 6:41 PM
I am SOOOO tired of everyone just sitting back and letting this happen. We need to ignore the politically correct dogma and get out in the streets ourselves and show how important our borders are to US, the real citizens of the U.S.A. On My 1 when they all stay out of work, FIRE THEM!

La vida! La raza! Viva chupacabbra!
La vida! La raza! Viva chupacabbra!
There is no reason for illegals from any country to have fear of being caught or obeying our laws. Why should they? There has been too much accomodating them throughout the years. Too many of our civil SELF-servants encourage illegals by making cities illegal alien sanctuaries, by ordering the sheriff NOT to ask a person’s legal status when arrested (although some sheriffs are doing so anyway as I understand this), by classifying the long voyage over our borders as an heroic effort, by not encouraging the speaking of English. This is done because of the fear of being branded a racist, accused of being insensative, and a too strong fear of someone’s cousin not voting for them come election time. And sadly, Pres Bush is very guilty of this as we can see in his recent televised meetings.
Indeed, if govt officials do not take our borders, laws, and sovergnity seriously, then why should illegal aliens do so?
So, there are 11 million illegal aliens here. Pres Bush admits defeat when he says that we cannot arrest and deport them. Well, it will take some time, BUT IF WE DO NOT BEGIN ROUNDING UP ILLEGAL ALIENS AT EVERY GATHERING AND TAKE EVERY ADVANTAGE OF DOING SO WHEN THE SITUATION PERMITS, THEN OF COURSE IT WILL NEVER GET DONE. We have to start somewhere, and we can never finish if we do not start.
Instead of insulting Americans by stressing the “jobs that Americans will not do” mantra, I ask the Pres to actually identify which jobs he is referring to and if he will order Labor officials to ensure that those “unwanted jobs” will be paying THE PROPER WAGES!
And for those who complain that America is unfair and too harsh when dealing with illegal aliens, let us take a trip south of the border and examine Mexico’s immigration laws as I have heard about them:
1) All illegal aliens are FELONS and will be treated as such.
2) Mexican troops are authorized to patrol the southern border of Mexico to deal with Guatamalans entering Mexico illegally.
3) Although not their function, regular police can also deal with illegal aliens.
And let’s not forget one interesting way of how Mexico dealt with some illegal aliens about a week ago…the gunning down of some of them ESPECIALLY ONE WHO “DID NOT LOOK MEXICAN.” As far as I know, those illegals were unarmed.
I have not heard of our Border Patrol gunning down unarmed illegal aliens for any reason. But, how many stories have we heard about illegal aliens killing Park Rangers, Deputy Sheriffs, and civilians? About 30% of our jails have an illegal alien population.
Oh, I’m sorry! Am I being too insensitive? Am I being too unfair?
TOO DAMN FLAMING BAD!!!!!!! IF PEOPLE WANT TO COME TO AMERICA, THEN THEY SHOULD SO LEGALLY!!!!!

Of the mother country to stain the blazons!
War, war! The patriots banners,
In the blood waves you soak.
War, war! In the mount, the valley

The ‘Anthem’ is one more slap in the face. Following the massive demonstrations of two weeks ago, many (myself included) felt that this blatant threat to the sovereignty of our nation would spark some National backlash; some response.
Well now we learn of the response:
Presidente Bush reached an Immigration Amnesty agreement, by locking (the ‘No Amnesty’) Senators Cornyn and Kyl out of the meeting.
Not at all what one who has sworn to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States might have been expected to do. Evidently, Presidente Bush thought, “the protestors were a voicing support for his policies”.
No Mr. President, the protest were for the overthrow of the government and another policy entirely: Reconquista.
Traction Control has been tracking the headlines and links to stories on Border Security for months now. It is a source of coninual amazement that 12 million non-citizens can override the rights of 300 million Citizens.
Clearly, we are in need of new representation. Damn.

Regarding what to do about the 11 million illegal aliens already here whom Bush says we cannot round-up and deport due to their numbers:
The old adage “if you can’t beat them, join them” comes to mind. It’s simple: If Bush can’t catch 11 million illegals because they’re determined to stay here, then he needs to make them determined to leave. Then, it won’t be necessary to round them up and deport them — they’ll do it themselves. Here’s how: Bush needs to immediately issue a presidential decree that does the following:
1. Ends all of the following for illegals: free medical treatment, free schooling (and in-state tuition at universities), driver license privileges, right to trial, etc.
2. Enact and *enforce* very stiff penalties for assisting illegals to enter the country, for employing illegals (knowingly or unknowingly), and for not enforcing the above, and publicize the severe punishment for a few example cases.
3. Enact (unless it exists already) and enforce a law that allows the government to freeze and confiscate all assets gained by a criminal during the commission of crime, where the crime in this case is being here illegally and working here illegally. The process should be to immediately freeze all bank accounts of illegal aliens in US and in nations that are our allies. Similar laws already apply to drug dealers and other criminals, so why not to these criminals?
Once the incentive to come here illegally goes away, so will the illegals.

It’s high time to make English the official language in the U.S. A common tongue binds a nation together.
We can start by printing election materials in English only. Naturalized citizens are supposed to know English, so why do they need another language?
Voter fraud has become a critical issue. This, along with checking ID at the polls, could help.

i heard a term used for that yesterday on the radio, maybe on Hannity??- they are called “anchor babies” because they “anchor” them here in the US. Once they are born here, it automatically entitles the whole family to SSSI, medicaid, and i believe, entitles then to green card status (someone correct me if i’m wrong on that one) I heard that one family had additional income on 14K based on their “anchor babies.” i might as well just open up my checkbook…

As a student of history, one of the fundamentals I learned about national sovereignty is that it is based on three things: a common language, a common value system and secure borders. Those three essentials have been under assault in this country, for eons, by those who graduated from the John Lennon School of Global Policy and believe serfs are cool.
AT THE VERY LEAST, English must be established as the official language of the USA, the US Constitution (the core of our common value system) must be strengthened by the altering of the first sentence of Section 1 of the 14th Amendment (no more anchor babies) and the floodgates (aka: our oh-so-porous borders) must be slammed shut.
At the next illegal alien protest – um, voter registration drive – someone please drop a giant net!

The Senate just spent $2 billion of your tax dollars without even having a clear-cut plan about how to secure the border.
The Border Fence Project has a plan that could build a high-technology barrier along the border, using volunteer civilian labor, that would only cost a fraction of the money the Senate just spent. They’re worthy of your support.

Love yer cartoon!
Maybe we should give the country back to the original stewards, the Native-Americans, and let them decide on immigration policy. The newcomers seem so xenophobic.
I wonder how many English during the 17th century had to jump through hoops designed by the autochthons…
I give a damn about my country and my heritage…which goes back to the founding fathers and mothers. But that was only a few hundred years ago. Not tens of thousands of years ago. And even though I haven’t had a genetic connection of immigration for hundreds of years, I still don’t feel possessive, especially not of the whole country, or world for that matter.
Surely a wise policy can be worked out, but the current administration is not known for wise policies. But no one really expected as much. Their job was to bleed the government dry, and pass the money to top-tier cronies in the private sector…which they have done with great efficiency.
But, should the private sector make the decision on immigration, you know there will be illegals pouring in, as it is the private sector that draws them and employs them. Not the government.
anonyMoses on April 27, 2006 at 4:51 PM
Why anonyMoses, how nice of you to reply and start right up with the typical liberal name calling. Now we’re all xenophobes…….. You know what, you also managed to get in some slams on President Bush. My, what a busy little beaver you are.
I personally don’t think you give a damn about anything except yourself. Unless you missed the point, no one has said anything about stopping immigration, although I believe we should think about slowing it down. The hot topic is ILLEGAL immigration and the billions it costs to support those illegals. Mexico’s economy gets most of the money earned here. Perhaps we should send them back to get their own house in order so Mexico would stop relying on us for it’s cash infusion. How about volunteering to work on the MinuteMan wall in Arizona? I’m looking into it. Maybe I could meet ya down there.
darwin on April 27, 2006 at 5:08 PM
The trick involved is that illegal MIGRATION and legal MIGRATION have been blended together to make it sound as if being against ILLEGAL migration is the same as being against LEGAL migration.
Illegal aliens who send American dollars back to Mexico are views as heroes and patriots in the eyes of the Mexican government. Indeed, Mexico does not need to have a domestic improvement policy because the USA has become Mexico’s improvement policy.
There is nothing xenophobic, or any other word you want to use for that matter, about wanting to secure our borders, protect our sovergnity, and demanding that people enter our nation LEGALLY AND OBEY OUR LAWS!!!!

DEMAND A SAY IN THIS NOW. 280 Million REAL US Citizens should decide, not illegals, not left wing media, just us.
Write to your Senators, congress, state reps, etc.

Here’s what I’d love to hear: a song - IN ENGLISH - written to the tune of our National Anthem, taking direct aim at this new attack song. One calling those people out as lying traitors and hypocrites who wouldn’t reciprocate for a second if given the opportunity.
Why a fighting song? And why to the tune of our national anthem? First, IMO it’s not sacreligous to write words to the tune of the Star Spangled Banner, as long they’re not actually billed as a version of the national anthem. (That’s what these people did, and that’s what’s so especially outrageous.) There are plenty of parody songs I’ve heard over the years that were sung to the SSB, and none of them sounded overtly disrespectful. This hypothetical song, *if done right*, would not debase our national anthem, and might provide a direct counter to the latest move.
If I thought mocking the Mexican national anthem would do the trick (saw the comment above) I’d be for it. But what we need right now is to - symbolically - take back the anthem, which can only be done by singing the tune itself to words that *we* pick.
As if to say: “If anyone’s going to change the words to our song, it’s going to be us; we like our anthem the way it is, thank you very much; and, by the way, here’s who you *really* are, here’s what you *really* stand for, here’s what you’re *really* saying…and we won’t stand for it for a minute.”
With the right words, it might work. With the wrong words, it would be a disaster & I wouldn’t recommend it.
What do you think? Disaster in the making, or idea with promise?

If we all don’t pressure our elected leaders to fix the security issues at our borders, which than become economic and social problems, we can only blame ourselves……I just do not believe that the politicians will fix this until they hear from us…

With the coming of May 1, a couple of things to consider. I posted a comment on the UN and Iran, and I want to tie another link with that post and May 1. In Flight 93, Todd Beamer and other heroes came together and acted when the Government clearly failed, and neither could, any perhaps would, do anything. Similarly we have the equivalent of Todd Beamer on the border. He is personified by the Minutemen. They have come together in the clear failure of the Government to take effective action to secure the boarders. These men are not vigilantes, as they were so mistakenly labeled by Bush Administration officials. Futher, May 1 is International Communist Celebration day, and the message of these people is not that they want to sing the National Anthem or become Americans. Their message is “Get out of our country.” IOW, the Nation does not belong to the people born here or given citizenship here, it belongs to the invaders, and they don’t mind telling YOU! The failure of our Government to control the borders is now hitting us full in the face. And so far, the people who are putting themselves on the line, the Todd Beamers, the Minutemen, are being called “vigilantes” by an incompetent, clueless, uncaring, and corrupt Government. Merciful God help us all, we are in mortal danger.

Many thanks to any immigrants who came here legally, learn english, our heritage and add to the overall well being of the United States. Your voices are extremely important. Please speak up. It not only let’s others know that you disagree with their actions and words, but encourages others to pursue their dreams and hopes the right way.

The mexican version of our National Anthem might be called “The Star Mangled Banner”.
Probably win a Grammy award next time around.

doingwhatican - I like it. Unfortunately it probably will get nominated, at least by the latin music awards, if not grammy’s.

Here’s the song they really ought to be singing—and, I suspect, are humming under their breath—
All for La Raza, (To the tune of La Cucaracha)
[Verse 1]
There you sit, your hands a-wringing,
If you’re broke now, don’t worry,
If it’s money you are after,
To America, amigo, hurry!
[Verse 2] (Both verses sung before chorus)
We will clog up many hospitals,
with bad diseases we might bring,
To the streets, we’re takin’ our fight,
Here’s the song the we will sing:
First Chorus
All for La Raza, the rest get nada.
Our vista is Reconquista.
All for La Raza, the rest get nada.
You gringos don’t understand-ah.
2nd Chorus
All for La Raza, the rest get nada.
We send our dough to old Mexico.
All for La Raza, the rest get nada.
You gringos don’t understand-oh.
Repeat Chorus until you get it.

Darwin — You head on down, and I might try to meet up with you later. Don’t forget your seal bat.
When do you plan on taking your important services to the Canadian border? Rumour is…that is where the terrorists come in.
I apologize if I don’t sound like a big Bush cheerleader, but I was never really fooled by his “plain talk”. I bet it was a lot more fun when he was flying high. Since I never really believe him, I don’t feel duped. But what about those who did believe him? Do you ever feel you’ve been duped? And if not, how do you square that with your own quest for truth and integrity?

Ummmmmmm………well, ok bub. Why don’t you just relax and contemplate your inner “touchy feelyness” and let the rest of us deal with reality. BTW, don’t apologize for not being a President Bush cheerleader, I don’t agree with him on everything either. Good luck and remember, it’s not all about you.
