NARAL: Obama's our candidate of choice; Update: Major endorsement tonight; Update: EMILY's List rips NARAL

The perfect endorsement on a day when an image of the Messiah beneath the cross graces the top of the Drudge Report. Not to worry: Doug Kmiec’s already assured us that he’s going to listen hard to the pro-life side before he goes ahead and appoints pro-choice judges anyway. Any good “post-partisan” politician would do the same.

“Pro-choice Americans have been fortunate to have two strong pro-choice candidates in Senator Obama and Senator Clinton, both of whom have inspired millions of new voters to participate in this historic presidential race,” NARAL president Nancy Keenan said in a statement. “Today, we are proud to put our organization’s grass-roots and political support behind the pro-choice candidate whom we believe will secure the Democratic nomination and advance to the general election. That candidate is Senator Obama.”

Officials said NARAL’s political committee board was about evenly divided among Clinton and Obama supporters and that the decision to endorse was hard fought. Ultimately, the board voted unanimously to support the Illinois senator…

They said the board decided to back Obama over Clinton because he is overwhelmingly favored to win the nomination and to heal what the organization viewed as a growing rift between black voters and white female activists that the protracted Clinton-Obama contest may have caused.

Needless to say, I’m sure the timing of this was orchestrated by Team Barry as a little morning-after abortion of Her Majesty’s West Virginia buzz. (And the afternoon is still young…) Exit question: Which big subject-changing endorsement will be rolled out next week after she crushes him by 30 points in Kentucky? The Goracle’s? Code Pink’s? Place your bets.

Update: Marc Ambinder says the Obama’s camp going to roll out a big name tonight. Not hard to guess who.

Update: EMILY’s List unloads on NARAL. Chaos:

“I think it is tremendously disrespectful to Sen. Clinton – who held up the nomination of a FDA commissioner in order to force approval of Plan B and who spoke so eloquently during the Supreme Court nomination about the importance of protecting Roe vs. Wade – to not give her the courtesy to finish the final three weeks of the primary process. It certainly must be disconcerting for elected leaders who stand up for reproductive rights and expect the choice community will stand with them.”
